Genesis 49

Jacob’s Last Words to His Sons

49 Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together so that I may tell you what will happen to you in the days to come. Gather together and hear, O sons of Jacob. Listen to your father Israel.

“Reuben, you are my first-born, my power and the beginning of my strength, first in pride and first in power. But because you are as wild as water, the first place will not be yours. It is because you went to your father’s bed and made it unclean.

“Simeon and Levi are brothers. They hurt others with their swords. May my soul not have a part in their secrets, nor my shining-greatness be joined to them. Because in their anger they killed men and for no reason they hurt cattle. Their anger will be punished, for it is bad. Their bad temper will be punished, for it is bad. I will divide them in Jacob and spread them apart in Israel.

“Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of those who hate you. Your father’s sons will bow down to you. Judah is a young lion. Like a lion full of meat, you have become great, my son. He lies down and sleeps like a lion. And as a lion, who is willing to wake him? 10 The right of a ruler will not leave Judah. The ruler’s special stick will not go from between his feet, until Shiloh comes. Then the people will obey Him. 11 He ties his young donkey to the vine, his donkey’s young one to the best vine. He washes his clothes in wine, his coats in the blood of grapes. 12 His eyes are darker than wine. And his teeth are whiter than milk.

13 “Zebulun will live beside the sea and be a safe place for ships. His land will lie beside Sidon.

14 “Issachar is a strong donkey lying down between the loads. 15 He saw that a resting place was good and that the land was pleasing. So he made his shoulder ready to carry loads. He let himself be a servant.

16 “Dan will judge his people, as one of the families of Israel. 17 Dan will be a snake in the way, a snake in the road, that bites the horse’s heels so that the man falls off. 18 I wait for Your saving power, O Lord.

19 “A group of soldiers will go against Gad. But he will go against them at their heels.

20 “Asher’s food will be rich. He will give pleasing food to kings.

21 “Naphtali is a female deer let loose who gives beautiful young ones.

22 “Joseph is a branch with much fruit, a branch with much fruit by a well. It grows over the wall. 23 The men fought against him with their bows. They sent arrows toward him and made it hard for him. 24 But his bow did not shake. His arms were made strong by the hands of the Powerful One of Jacob, by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, 25 by the God of your father Who helps you, and by the All-powerful Who brings good to you. He brings good from heaven above, and from the deep that lies below, and from the body of a mother. 26 More good has come to your father than to my fathers before me, as lasting as the hills that last forever. May this good be on the head of Joseph, on the crown of him who was divided from his brothers.

27 “Benjamin is a hungry wolf. In the morning he eats the animals he has caught. And in the evening he divides what he has taken.”

28 All these are the twelve family groups of Israel. This is what their father said to them when he prayed that good would come to them. He prayed for each of them to receive the good they should have.

The Death of Jacob

29 Then he told them, “I will soon be with my people who have died before me. Bury me with my fathers in the grave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the grave that is in the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan. Abraham bought this grave and the field from Ephron the Hittite for a burying place. 31 There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarah. There they buried Isaac and his wife Rebekah. And there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the grave that is in it were bought from the sons of Heth.”

33 When Jacob finished telling his sons what to do, he lay back down on his bed and died.

Luke 2

The Birth of Jesus (A)

In those days Caesar Augustus sent out word that the name of every person in the Roman nation must be written in the books of the nation. This first writing took place while Quirinius was ruler of Syria.

So all the people went to their own cities to have their names written in the books of the nation. Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in the country of Galilee to the town of Bethlehem. It was known as the city of David. He went there because he was from the family of David. Joseph went to have his and Mary’s names written in the books of the nation. Mary was his promised wife and soon to become a mother.

While they were there in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to give birth to her baby. Her first son was born. She put cloth around Him and laid Him in a place where cattle are fed. There was no room for them in the place where people stay for the night.

The Shepherds Learn of the Birth of Jesus

In the same country there were shepherds in the fields. They were watching their flocks of sheep at night. The angel of the Lord came to them. The shining-greatness of the Lord shone around them. They were very much afraid. 10 The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. See! I bring you good news of great joy which is for all people. 11 Today, One Who saves from the punishment of sin has been born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord. 12 There will be something special for you to see. This is the way you will know Him. You will find the Baby with cloth around Him, lying in a place where cattle are fed.”

13 At once many angels from heaven were seen, along with the angel, giving thanks to God. They were saying, 14 “Greatness and honor to our God in the highest heaven and peace on earth among men who please Him.”

The Shepherds Go to Bethlehem

15 The angels went from the shepherds back to heaven. The shepherds said to each other, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see what has happened. The Lord has told us about this.” 16 They went fast and found Mary and Joseph. They found the Baby lying in a place where cattle are fed. 17 When they saw the Child, they told what the angel said about Him. 18 All who heard it were surprised at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary hid all these words in her heart. She thought about them much. 20 The shepherds went back full of joy. They thanked God for all they had heard and seen. It happened as the angel had told them.

Jesus Taken to the House of God

21 When eight days were over, they did the religious act of becoming a Jew on the Child. He was named Jesus. This name was given to Him by the angel when Mary was told He was to be born. 22 When the days were over for her to be made pure as it was written in the Law of Moses, they took Jesus to Jerusalem to give Him to the Lord. 23 It is written in the Law of the Lord, “The first-born male born of a woman will be called holy to the Lord.” 24 They were to give a gift of two turtle-doves or two young birds on the altar in worship to the Lord. This was written in the Law of the Lord.

Simeon’s Song of Thanks

25 There was a man in Jerusalem by the name of Simeon. He was a good man and very religious. He was looking for the time when the Jewish nation would be saved. The Holy Spirit was on him. 26 The Holy Spirit made it known to Simeon that he would not die before he had seen God’s Chosen One. 27 He came to the house of God being led by the Holy Spirit. The parents took Jesus to the house of God. They came to do what the Law said must be done. 28 Then Simeon took Jesus in his arms. He gave honor to Him and thanked God, saying,

29 “Lord, now let me die in peace, as You have said. 30 My eyes have seen the One Who will save men from the punishment of their sins. 31 You have made Him ready in the sight of all nations. 32 He will be a light to shine on the people who are not Jews. He will be the shining-greatness of Your people the Jews.” 33 Joseph and the mother of Jesus were surprised and wondered about these words which were said about Jesus. 34 Simeon honored them and said to Mary the mother of Jesus, “See! This Child will make many people fall and many people rise in the Jewish nation. He will be spoken against. 35 A sword will cut through your soul. By this the thoughts of many hearts will be understood.”

Anna Gives Thanks for Jesus

36 Anna was a woman who spoke God’s Word. She was the daughter of Phanuel of the family group of Asher. Anna was many years old. She had lived with her husband seven years after she was married. 37 Her husband had died and she had lived without a husband eighty-four years. Yet she did not go away from the house of God. She served God day and night, praying and going without food so she could pray better. 38 At that time she came and gave thanks to God. She told the people in Jerusalem about Jesus. They were looking for the One to save them from the punishment of their sins and to set them free.

They Return to Nazareth (B)

39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything the Law said to do, they went back to Nazareth in Galilee. 40 The Child grew and became strong in spirit. He was filled with wisdom and the loving-favor of God was on Him.

41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year for the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt. 42 When He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem as they had done before. 43 When the days of the special supper were over, they started back to their town. But the boy Jesus was still in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it. 44 They thought Jesus was with the others of the group. They walked for one day. Then they looked for Him among their family and friends.

45 When they could not find Jesus, they turned back to Jerusalem to look for Him. 46 Three days later they found Him in the house of God. He was sitting among the teachers. He was hearing what they said and asking questions. 47 All those who heard Him were surprised and wondered about His understanding and at what He said. 48 When His parents saw Him, they were surprised. His mother said to Him, “My Son, why have You done this to us? See! Your father and I have had much sorrow looking for You.” 49 He said to them, “Why were you looking for Me? Do you not know that I must be in My Father’s house?” 50 They did not understand the things He said to them.

51 He went with them to Nazareth and obeyed them. But His mother kept all these words in her heart. 52 Jesus grew strong in mind and body. He grew in favor with God and men.

Job 15

Eliphaz Talks

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered, “Should a wise man answer with learning that is of no worth, and fill himself with the east wind? Should he argue with talk that will not help, or with words that do no good? For sure you are doing away with the fear of the Lord. You are stopping the quiet worship of God. You show your sin by what you say. You are trying to hide behind your words. Your own mouth says you are guilty, and not I. Your own lips speak against you.

“Were you the first man to be born? Or were you made before the hills? Were you there to hear the secret plans of God? Are you the only one who has wisdom? What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? 10 Men whose hair has grown white and those who have lived many years are among us. They are older than your father. 11 Are the gentle words spoken to you, which give comfort from God, too little for you? 12 Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes shine, 13 that you turn your spirit against God and let such words go out of your mouth? 14 What is man, that he can be pure, or he who is born of a woman, that he can be right and good? 15 See, God puts no trust in His holy ones. The heavens are not pure in His eyes. 16 How much less one who is hated and sinful, a man who drinks sin like water!

17 “I will tell you, listen to me. I will make known what I have seen, 18 what wise men have told that they learned from their fathers. They have not hidden anything. 19 These were the ones to whom the land was given, and no stranger passed among them. 20 The sinful man suffers in pain all his days. His years are numbered because of all his sin. 21 Sounds of fear are in his ears. When all seems to be going well, the one who destroys will come upon him. 22 He does not believe that he will be taken away from darkness, and the sword is meant for him. 23 He goes to look for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is near. 24 Trouble and pain fill him with fear. They have power over him like a king ready for battle. 25 He has put out his hand against God, and is full of pride against the All-powerful. 26 He rushes in pride against Him with his big battle-covering. 27 His face is fat, and his thighs are heavy with fat. 28 He has lived in cities that have been laid waste, in houses where no one lives which will be destroyed. 29 He will no longer be rich, and what he has will not last. His grain will come to nothing. 30 He will not get away from darkness. The fire will dry up his branches, and the breath of God’s mouth will drive him away. 31 Let him not lie to himself and trust in what is empty. For what is empty will be his reward. 32 It will be paid in full while he still lives, and his branch will not be green. 33 He will be like the vine that drops off its grapes before they are ready. And he will throw off his flower like the olive tree. 34 Those who visit the sinful bring no fruit. And fire destroys the tents of those who do wrong. 35 They give birth to trouble and bring sin. Their minds plan lies.”

1 Corinthians 3

Christian brothers, I could not speak to you as to full-grown Christians. I spoke to you as men who have not obeyed the things you have been taught. I spoke to you as if you were baby Christians. My teaching was as if I were giving you milk to drink. I could not give you meat because you were not ready for it. Even yet you are not able to have anything but milk. You still live as men who are not Christians. When you are jealous and fight with each other, you are still living in sin and acting like sinful men in the world. When one says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I am a follower of Apollos,” does not this sound like the talk of baby Christians? Who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only servants owned by God. He gave us gifts to preach His Word. And because of that, you put your trust in Christ. I planted the seed. Apollos watered it, but it was God Who kept it growing. This shows that the one who plants or the one who waters is not the important one. God is the important One. He makes it grow. The one who plants and the one who waters are alike. Each one will receive his own reward. For we work together with God. You are God’s field.

You are God’s building also. 10 Through God’s loving-favor to me, I laid the stones on which the building was to be built. I did it like one who knew what he was doing. Now another person is building on it. Each person who builds must be careful how he builds on it. 11 Jesus Christ is the Stone on which other stones for the building must be laid. It can be only Christ. 12 Now if a man builds on the Stone with gold or silver or beautiful stones, or if he builds with wood or grass or straw, 13 each man’s work will become known. There will be a day when it will be tested by fire. The fire will show what kind of work it is. 14 If a man builds on work that lasts, he will receive his reward. 15 If his work is burned up, he will lose it. Yet he himself will be saved as if he were going through a fire.

16 Do you not know that you are a house of God and that the Holy Spirit lives in you? 17 If any man destroys the house of God, God will destroy him. God’s house is holy. You are the place where He lives.

18 Do not fool yourself. If anyone thinks he knows a lot about the things of this world, he had better become a fool. Then he may become wise. 19 The wisdom of this world is foolish to God. The Holy Writings say, “He is the One Who gets them in a trap when they use their own wisdom.” (A) 20 They also say, “The Lord knows how the wise man thinks. His thinking is worth nothing.” (B) 21 As a Christian, do not be proud of men and of what they can do. All things belong to you. 22 Paul and Apollos and Peter belong to you. The world and life and death belong to you. Things now and things to come belong to you. 23 You belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
