Yahweh Appears to Abraham as a Man

18 And Yahweh appeared to him[a] by the oaks of Mamre. And he was sitting in the doorway of the tent at the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men were standing near[b] him. And he saw them and ran from the doorway of the tent to meet them. And he bowed down to the ground. And he said, “My lord, if I have found favor in your eyes do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest under the tree. And let me bring a piece of bread, then[c] refresh yourselves.[d] Afterward you can pass on, once[e] you have passed by with your servant.” Then they said, “Do so as you have said.” Then[f] Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and he said, “Quickly—make three seahs of fine flour for kneading and make bread cakes!” And Abraham ran to the cattle and took a calf,[g] tender and good, and gave it to the servant, and he made haste to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk, and the calf which he prepared, and set it before them. And he was standing by them under the tree while[h] they ate. And they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “Here, in the tent.” 10 And he[i] said, “I will certainly return to you in the spring,[j] and look, Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the doorway of the tent, and which was behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age;[k] the way of women[l] had ceased to be for Sarah. 12 So[m] Sarah laughed to herself saying, “After I am worn out and my husband is old, shall this pleasure be to me?” 13 Then Yahweh said to Abraham, “What is this that Sarah laughed, saying, ‘Is it indeed true that I will bear a child, now that I have grown old?’ 14 Is anything too difficult for Yahweh? At the appointed time I will return to you in the spring[n] and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” because she was afraid. He[o] said, “No, but you did laugh.”

16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down upon Sodom. And Abraham went with them to send them on their way.[p] 17 Then Yahweh said, “Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and strong nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed on account of him. 19 For I have chosen[q] him, that he will command his children and his household after him that they will keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice, so that Yahweh may bring upon Abraham that which he said to him.” 20 Then Yahweh said, “Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very serious,[r] 21 I will go down and I will see. Have they done altogether according to its cry of distress which has come to me? If not, I will know.”

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

22 And the men turned from there and went toward Sodom. And Abraham was still standing before Yahweh. 23 And Abraham drew near to Yahweh and said, “Will you also sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 If perhaps there are fifty righteous in the midst of the city, will you also sweep them away and not forgive the place on account of the fifty righteous in her midst? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing as this, to kill the righteous with the wicked, that[s] the righteous would be as the wicked! Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?” 26 And Yahweh said, “If I find fifty righteous in Sodom, in the midst of the city, then I will forgive the whole place for their sake.” 27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Look, please, I was bold to speak to my Lord, but I am dust and ashes. 28 Perhaps the fifty righteous are lacking five—will you destroy the whole city on account of the five?” And he answered, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 And once again he spoke[t] to him and said, “What if[u] forty are found there?” And he answered, “I will not do it on account of the forty.” 30 And he said, “Please, let not my Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if[v] thirty be found there?” And he answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” 31 And he said, “Please, now, I was bold to speak to my Lord. What if[w] twenty be found there?” And he answered, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.” 32 And he said, “Please, let not my Lord be angry, and I will speak only once more. What if[x] ten are found there?” And he answered, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.” 33 Then Yahweh left,[y] as he finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Matthew 17

The Transfiguration

17 And after six days Jesus took along Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothing became bright as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. So Peter answered and[a] said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here! If you want, I will make here three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While[b] he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!” And when[c] the disciples heard this,[d] they fell down on their faces and were extremely frightened. And Jesus came and touched them and[e] said, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they[f] lifted up their eyes they saw no one except him—Jesus alone.

And as[g] they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them saying, “Tell no one the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 And the disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11 And he answered and[h] said, “Elijah indeed is coming, and will restore all things. 12 But I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did with him whatever they wanted. In the same way also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

A Demon-possessed Boy Healed

14 And when they[i] came to the crowd, a man approached him, kneeling down before him 15 and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures and suffers severely, for often he falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to your disciples, and they were not able to heal him.” 17 And Jesus answered and[j] said, “O unbelieving and perverse generation! How long[k] will I be with you? How long[l] must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!” 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him and the boy was healed from that hour.

19 Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and[m] said, Why[n] were we not able to expel it?” 20 And he said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”[o]

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection a Second Time

22 Now as[p] they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men,[q] 23 and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.” And they were extremely distressed.

Paying the Double Drachma Temple Tax

24 Now when[r] they arrived in Capernaum, the ones who collected the double drachma tax[s] came up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the double drachma tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And when he[t] came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect tolls or taxes—from their own sons, or from foreigners?” 26 And when he[u] said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 But so that we do not give offense to them, go out to the sea, cast a line with[v] a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. And when you[w] open its mouth, you will find a four-drachma coin. Take that and[x] give it[y] to them for me and you.”

Nehemiah 7

Now when the wall had been built and I had erected the doors and appointed the gatekeepers, singers, and the Levites, I gave command over Jerusalem to my brother Hanani and Hananiah the commander of the citadel. For he was a faithful man and feared God more than many. I said to them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot. While they are standing guard let them shut and fasten the doors. And appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his post and another opposite his house.” The city was widespread and large, but the people in it were few and no houses were rebuilt.

Lists of the Exiles Who Returned

Then my God put into my heart to assemble the nobles, the prefects, and the people to be enrolled. I found the book of the genealogy of those who first came back, and I found this written upon it:

These are the people of the province who came up from captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried into exile. They returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each one to his city. These came with Zerubbabel, Joshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah.

The number of the men of the people of Israel: the descendants[a] of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two. The descendants[b] of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two. 10 The descendants[c] of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two. 11 The descendants[d] of Pahath-Moab, of the descendants[e] of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred and eighteen. 12 The descendants[f] of Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four. 13 The descendants[g] of Zattu, eight hundred and forty-five. 14 The descendants[h] of Zaccai, seven hundred and sixty. 15 The descendants[i] of Binnui, six hundred and forty-eight. 16 The descendants[j] of Bebai, six hundred and twenty-eight. 17 The descendants[k] of Azgad, two thousand three hundred and twenty-two. 18 The descendants[l] of Adonikam, six hundred and sixty-seven. 19 The descendants[m] of Bigvai, two thousand and sixty-seven. 20 The descendants[n] of Adin, six hundred and fifty-five. 21 The descendants[o] of Ater, namely of Hezekiah, ninety-eight. 22 The descendants[p] of Hashum, three hundred and twenty-eight. 23 The descendants[q] of Bezai, three hundred and twenty-four. 24 The descendants[r] of Hariph, one hundred and twelve. 25 The descendants[s] of Gibeon, ninety-five. 26 The men of Bethlehem and Netophah, one hundred and eighty-eight. 27 The men of Anathoth, one hundred and twenty-eight. 28 The men of Beth-azmaveth, forty-two. 29 The men of Kiriath-Jearim, Kephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred and forty-three. 30 The men of Ramah and Geba, six hundred and twenty-one. 31 The men of Micmash, one hundred and twenty-two. 32 The men of Bethel and Ai, one hundred and twenty-three. 33 The men of the other Nebo, fifty-two. 34 The people[t] of the other Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four. 35 The people[u] of Harim, three hundred and twenty. 36 The people[v] of Jericho, three hundred and forty-five. 37 The people[w] of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred and twenty-one. 38 The people[x] of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.

39 The priests: The descendants[y] of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred and seventy-three. 40 The descendants[z] of Immer, one thousand and fifty-two. 41 The descendants[aa] of Pashhur, one thousand two hundred and forty-seven. 42 The descendants[ab] of Harim, one thousand and seventeen.

43 The Levites: the descendants[ac] of Jeshua, namely of Kadmiel of the descendants[ad] of Hodaviah, seventy-four. 44 The singers: the descendants[ae] of Asaph, one hundred and forty-eight. 45 The gatekeepers: the descendants[af] of Shallum, the descendants[ag] of Ater, the descendants[ah] of Talmon, the descendants[ai] of Akkub, the descendants[aj] of Hatita, the descendants[ak] of Shobai, one hundred and thirty-eight.

46 The temple servants: the descendants[al] of Ziha, the descendants[am] of Hasupha, the descendants[an] of Tabbaoth, 47 the descendants[ao] of Keros, the descendants[ap] of Siaha, the descendants[aq] of Padon, 48 the descendants[ar] of Lebanah, the descendants[as] of Hagaba, the descendants[at] of Shalmai, 49 the descendants[au] of Hanan, the descendants[av] of Giddel, the descendants[aw] of Gahar, 50 the descendants[ax] of Reaiah, the descendants[ay] of Rezin, the descendants[az] of Nekoda, 51 the descendants[ba] of Gazzam, the descendants[bb] of Uzza, the descendants[bc] of Paseah, 52 the descendants[bd] of Besai, the descendants[be] of Meunim, the descendants[bf] of Nephushesim, 53 the descendants[bg] of Bakbuk, the descendants[bh] of Hakupha, the descendants[bi] of Harhur, 54 the descendants[bj] of Bazlith, the descendants[bk] of Mehida, the descendants[bl] of Harsha, 55 the descendants[bm] of Barkos, the descendants[bn] of Sisera, the descendants[bo] of Temah, 56 the descendants[bp] of Neziah, the descendants[bq] of Hatipha.

57 The descendants[br] of Solomon’s servants: the descendants[bs] of Sotai, the descendants[bt] of Sophereth, the descendants[bu] of Perida, 58 the descendants[bv] of Jaala, the descendants[bw] of Darkon, the descendants[bx] of Giddel, 59 the descendants[by] of Shephatiah, the descendants[bz] of Hattil, the descendants[ca] of Pochereth-Hazzebaim, the descendants[cb] of Amon.

60 All the temple servants and the descendants[cc] of Solomon’s servants were three hundred and ninety-two.

61 These were the ones who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they were not able to prove their ancestral houses or their descent, whether they were from Israel: 62 the descendants[cd] of Delaiah, the descendants[ce] of Tobiah, the descendants[cf] of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two. 63 And from the priests: the descendants[cg] of Hobaiah, the descendants[ch] of Hakkoz, the descendants[ci] of Barzillai (who had taken as a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name). 64 These sought their record among those enrolled in the genealogy, but it was not found there, so they were excluded as unclean from the priesthood. 65 So the governor said to them that they could not eat the most holy food until a priest could come with Urim and Thummim.

66 All of the assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty, 67 besides their servants and female slaves—these were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. And the male and female singers were two hundred and forty-five,[cj] 69 [ck] there were four hundred and thirty-five camels and six thousand seven hundred and twenty male donkeys.

70 Now some from the heads of the families[cl] gave to the work. The governor gave to the storehouse one thousand darics of gold, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priestly tunics. 71 Now some of the heads of the families[cm] gave to the storehouse of the work twenty thousand gold darics and two thousand two hundred silver minas. 72 And what the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand darics of gold, and two thousand silver minas, and sixty-seven priestly tunics.

73 So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel settled in their cities. When the seventh month came, the Israelites[cn] were in their cities.

Acts 17

Attacked by a Mob in Thessalonica

17 Now after they[a] traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. And as was his custom,[b] Paul went in to them and on three Sabbath days he discussed with them from the scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that it was necessary for the Christ[c] to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.”[d] And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, and also a large number of God-fearing Greeks and not a few of the prominent women.

But the Jews were filled with jealousy and, taking along some worthless men from the rabble in the marketplace and forming a mob, threw the city into an uproar. And attacking Jason’s house, they were looking for them to bring them[e] out to the popular assembly. And when they[f] did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These people who have stirred up trouble throughout the world[g] have come here also, whom Jason has entertained as guests! And these people are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king, Jesus!” And they threw the crowd into confusion, and the city officials who heard these things. And after[h] taking money as security from Jason and the rest, they released them.

Paul and Silas in Berea

10 Now the brothers sent away both Paul and Silas at once, during the night, to Berea. They[i] went into the synagogue of the Jews when they[j] arrived. 11 Now these were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica. They[k] accepted the message with all eagerness, examining the scriptures every day to see if these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and not a few of the prominent Greek women and men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that the message of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came there too, inciting and stirring up the crowds. 14 So then the brothers sent Paul away at once to go to the sea, and both Silas and Timothy remained there. 15 And those who conducted Paul brought him[l] as far as Athens, and after[m] receiving an order for Silas and Timothy that they should come to him as soon as possible, they went away.

16 Now while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he[n] observed the city was full of idols. 17 So he was discussing in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles,[o] and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18 And even some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him, and some were saying, “What does this babbler want to say?” But others said,[p] “He appears to be a proclaimer of foreign deities,” because he was proclaiming the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took hold of him and[q] brought him[r] to the Areopagus, saying, “May we learn what is this new teaching being proclaimed by you? 20 For you are bringing some astonishing things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.”[s] 21 (Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who stayed there used to spend their time in nothing else than telling something or listening to something new.)

Paul Speaks to the Areopagus

22 So Paul stood there in the middle of the Areopagus and[t] said, “Men of Athens, I see you are very religious in every respect.[u] 23 For as I[v] was passing through and observing carefully your objects of worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed, ‘To an unknown God.’ Therefore what you worship without knowing it,[w] this I proclaim to you— 24 the God who made the world and all the things in it. This one, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands, 25 nor is he served by human hands as if he[x] needed anything, because[y] he himself gives to everyone life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of humanity to live on all the face of the earth, determining their fixed times and the fixed boundaries of their habitation, 27 to search for God, if perhaps indeed they might feel around for him and find him.[z] And indeed he is not far away from each one of us, 28 for in him we live and move and exist,[aa] as even some of your own[ab] poets have said: ‘For we also are his[ac] offspring.’[ad] 29 Therefore, because we[ae] are offspring of God, we ought not to think the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by human skill and thought. 30 Therefore although[af] God has overlooked the times of ignorance, he now commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has set a day on which he is going to judge the world in righteousness by the man who he has appointed, having provided proof to everyone by[ag] raising him from the dead.” 32 Now when they[ah] heard about the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed, but others said, “We will hear you about this again also.” 33 So Paul went out from the midst of them. 34 But some people[ai] joined him and[aj] believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named[ak] Damaris and others with them.
