2 Samuel 2

After this, David asked counsel of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” And David said, “Where shall I go? He then answered, “To Hebron.”

So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail, Nabal the Carmelite’s wife.

And David brought up the men who were with him, every man with his household. And they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

Then the men of Judah came. And they anointed David king over the House of Judah. And they told David, saying that the men of Jabesh Gilead had buried Saul.

And David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, “Blessed are you of the LORD, in that you have shown such kindness to your lord Saul, that you have buried him!

“Therefore, now, may the LORD show mercy and truth to you. And I will repay you this benefit, because you have done this thing.

“Therefore, now, let your hands be strong, and be valiant! For your master Saul is dead, nevertheless the House of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

But Abner, the son of Ner, who was captain of Saul’s army, took Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, and brought him to Mahanaim,

and made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

10 Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel and reigned for two years. But the House of Judah followed David.

11 And the time which David reigned over the House of Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months.

12 And Abner, the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, went out of Mahanaim to Gibeon.

13 And Joab, the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David went out and met one another by the pool of Gibeon. And they sat down, one on one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool.

14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men arise now and play before us.” And Joab said, “Let them arise.”

15 Then there arose and went over twelve from Benjamin (belonging to Ishbosheth, the son of Saul) and twelve of the servants of David.

16 And each one caught another person by the head and thrust his sword in his side, so they fell down together. Therefore, the place was called Helkath Hazzurim (which is in Gibeon).

17 And the battle was exceedingly fierce that same day. For Abner and the men of Israel fell before the servants of David.

18 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. And Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle.

19 And Asahel followed after Abner. And while going, he turned neither to the right nor to the left from Abner.

20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Are you Asahel?” And he answered, “Yes.”

21 Then Abner said, “Turn yourself either to the right or to the left and take one of the young men and take his weapons for yourself.” And Asahel would not depart from him.

22 And Abner said to Asahel, “Depart from me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then would I be able to hold up my face to Joab, your brother?”

23 And when he would not depart, Abner, with the blunt end of the spear, struck him under the fifth rib, so that the spear came out behind him. And he fell down there and died in his place. And as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died, stood still.

24 Also, Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner. And the Sun went down after they had come to the hill, Ammah, which lies before Giah, on the road to the wilderness of Gibeon.

25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and were a troop, and stood on the top of a hill.

26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? “Do you not know that it will be bitterness in the end? How long, then, shall it be before you bid the people return from following their brethren?”

27 And Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely the people would have departed in the morning, each one returning from following his brother.”

28 So Joab blew a trumpet. And all the people stood still, and no longer pursued after Israel. Nor did they fight anymore.

29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and went over the Jordan, and passed through all Bithron, until they came to Mahanaim.

30 Joab also returned from following Abner. And when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen of David’s servants were missing, and Asahel.

31 But the servants of David had struck some of Benjamin and Abner’s men, so that three hundred sixty men died.

32 And they took up Asahel and buried him in the sepulcher of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night. And when they came to Hebron, the day arose.

1 Corinthians 13

13 Though I speak with the tongues of man and angels, and do not have love, I am as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

And though I may have the gift of prophecy, and know all secrets and all knowledge; indeed, if I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and do not have love, I am nothing.

And though I feed the poor with all my goods, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profits me nothing.

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love does not envy. Love does not boast and is not puffed up,

It is not rude. It is not selfish. It is not provoked to anger. It thinks no evil:

It does not rejoice in injustice but rejoices in the truth.

It bears all things: It believes all things. It hopes all things. It endures all things.

Love never fails; even though prophecies are ended, languages cease, and knowledge fades away.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when That which is perfect comes, then that which is in part shall be abolished.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child. I understood as a child. I thought as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass darkly. But then shall we see face to face. Now I know in part. But then shall I know just as I also am known.

13 And yet remain faith, hope, love; these three. But the greatest of these is love.

Ezekiel 11

11 Moreover, the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the East Gate of the LORD’s House, which lies eastward. And behold, at the entry of the gate were twenty-five men, among whom I saw Jaazaniah, the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah, the son of Benaiah, the princes of the people.

Then He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men that imagine mischief, and devise wicked counsel in this city.

They say, ‘It is not near, to build houses. This is the caldron, and we are the flesh.’

“Therefore, prophesy against them, son of man. Prophesy!”

And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said to me: “Say, ‘Thus says the LORD: “O you House of Israel! This you have said. And I know that which rises up from your minds.

“You have murdered many in this city. And you have filled its streets with the slain.

‘Therefore thus says the LORD God: “Those whom you have killed, and have laid in the midst of it, they are the flesh; and this is the caldron. But I will bring you forth from the midst of it.

“You have feared the sword; and I will bring a sword upon you,” says the Lord GOD.

“And I will bring you out of its midst, and deliver you into the hands of strangers, and will execute judgments among you.

10 “You shall fall by the sword. I will judge you on the border of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD.

11 “This shall not be your caldron, nor shall you be the flesh in its midst. I will judge you on the border of Israel.

12 “And you shall know that I am the LORD! For you have not walked in My Statutes or executed My Judgments but have observed the ordinances of the heathen who are all around you.”’”

13 And after I prophesied, Pelatiah, the son of Benaiah, died. Then I fell down upon my face and cried with a loud voice, and said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Will You then utterly destroy all the remnant of Israel?”

14 The Word of the LORD came to me again, saying:

15 “Son of man. Your brethren, your relatives, your kinsmen, and all the House of Israel, are those to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Go far away from the LORD! This land has been given to us as a possession!’

16 “Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Although I have cast them far away, among the heathen; and although I have scattered them among the countries, I will still be to them as a little Sanctuary in the countries where they shall go.”’

17 “Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “I will gather you again from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where you have been scattered. And I will give you the land of Israel.

18 “And they shall come there; and they shall take away all its idols, and all its abominations from there.

19 “And I will give them one heart. And I will put a new spirit within their core. And I will take the stony heart out of their bodies. And will give them a heart of flesh,

20 “so that they may walk in My Statutes, and keep My Judgments, and execute them. And they shall be My people, and I will be their God.

21 “But upon those whose heart is toward their idols, and whose affection goes after their abominations, I will lay their way upon their own heads,” says the Lord GOD.’”

22 Then, the Cherubim lifted up their wings, and the wheels with them, and the Glory of the God of Israel was upon them on high.

23 And the Glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city and stood upon the mountain which is toward the east side of the city.

24 Afterward, the Spirit took me up and brought me, in a vision by the Spirit of God, into Chaldea, to those who were led away as captives. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.

25 Then I declared all the things that the LORD had shown me to those who had been led away as captives.

Psalm 50

50 The God of gods, The LORD, has spoken and called the Earth, from the rising up of the Sun to the going down thereof.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, has God shined.

Our God shall come and shall not keep silent. A fire shall devour before Him, and a mighty storm shall be moved around Him.

He shall call the heaven above and the Earth, to judge His people.

“Gather My saints together to Me, those who make a covenant with Me with sacrifice.”

And the heavens shall declare His righteousness; for God is Judge Himself. Selah.

“Hear, O My people, and I will speak. Hear, O Israel, and I will testify to you. I am God. Your God.

“I will not rebuke you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings continually before me.

“I will take no bullock out of your house, nor goats out of your folds.

10 “For all the beasts of the forest are Mine, the beasts on a thousand mountains.

11 “I know all the birds on the mountains; and the wild beasts of the field are Mine.

12 “If I am hungry, I will not tell you. For the world is Mine and all that therein is.

13 “Will I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Offer praise to God; and pay your vows to the Most High.

15 “And call upon Me on the day of trouble. I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me.”

16 But to the wicked God said, “Why have you declared My ordinances, that you would take My Covenant in your mouth,

17 “seeing you hate to be reformed and have cast My words behind you?

18 “For when you see a thief, you run with him; and you are partaker with the adulterers.

19 “You give your mouth to evil; and with your tongue you forge deceit.

20 “You sit and speak against your brother and slander your mother’s son.

21 “These things you have done; and I held My tongue. Therefore, you thought that I was like you. But I will rebuke you and set them in order before your eyes.

22 “Oh, consider this, you who forget God; lest I tear you in pieces and there are none who can deliver you.

23 “He who offers praise shall glorify Me. And to him who sets his way aright, I will show the salvation of God.” To him who excels: A Psalm of David, when the Prophet Nathan came to him, after he had gone into Bathsheba.
