1 Samuel 28

28 Now at that time, the Philistines assembled their bands and army to fight with Israel. Therefore, Achish said to David, “Know assuredly that you shall go out with me to the battle, you and your men!”

And David said to Achish, “Surely, you shall know what your servant can do.” And Achish said to David, “Surely, I will make you keeper of my head, forever.”

By then, Samuel had died. And all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had put the sorcerers and the soothsayers out of the land.

Then the Philistines assembled themselves and came and camped in Shunem. And Saul assembled all Israel, and they camped in Gilboa.

And when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid; and his heart trembled greatly.

Therefore, Saul asked counsel of the LORD, and the LORD did not answer him, by dreams or by Urim or even by Prophets.

Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go to her and ask of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman at En Dor who is a medium.”

Then Saul changed himself and put on other clothes. And he and two other men went. And they came to the woman at night. And he said, “Please conjure up for me, and bring up for me him whom I shall name to you.”

And the woman said to him, “Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has destroyed the sorcerers and the soothsayers out of the land. Why, then, do you seek to entrap me, to cause me to die?

10 And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, “As the LORD lives, no harm shall come to you for this thing.”

11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he answered, “Bring up Samuel for me.”

12 And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me?! For you are Saul!”

13 And the king said to her, “Do not be afraid. For what did you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I saw gods ascending up out of the earth!”

14 Then he said to her, “What is his form?” And she answered, “An old man comes up, wrapped in a robe.” And Saul knew that it was Samuel. And he turned his face to the ground and bowed himself.

15 And Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?” Then Saul answered, “I am in great distress! For the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and no longer answers me, either by Prophets or by dreams. Therefore, I have called you, so that you may tell me what I shall do.”

16 Then Samuel said, “Why, then, do you ask of me, seeing the LORD has gone from you and is your enemy?

17 “The LORD has only done for him as He spoke by my hand. For the LORD will tear the kingdom out of your hand and give it your neighbor David.

18 “Because you did not obey the Voice of the LORD or execute His fierce wrath upon the Amalekites, therefore the LORD has done this to you this day.

19 “Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel, with you, into the hands of the Philistines. And tomorrow, you and your sons shall be with me. And the LORD shall give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”

20 Then Saul fell full length on the earth and was very afraid because of the words of Samuel, so that there was no strength in him. For he had eaten no bread all day or all night.

21 Then the woman came to Saul and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him, “See, your handmaid has obeyed your voice; and I have put my soul in my hand and have obeyed your words which you said to me.

22 “Now, therefore, you please also listen to the voice of your handmaid and let me set a morsel of bread before you, so that you may eat and strengthen yourself and go on your journey.”

23 But he refused and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him. And he obeyed their voice. So he arose from the earth and sat on the bed.

24 Now, the woman had a fat calf in the house. And she hurried and killed it and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread from it.

25 Then she brought them before Saul, and before his servants. And when they had eaten, they stood up and went away the same night.

1 Corinthians 9

Am I not an Apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?

If I am not an Apostle to others, nonetheless, surely I am to you. For you are the seal of my Apostleship in the Lord.

My defense to those who examine me, is this:

Do we not have authority to eat and to drink?

Or do we not have authority to take along a wife who is a sister, just as the rest of the Apostles, and as the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?

Or do only Barnabas and I not have authority to not work?

Who goes to war at any time at his own cost? Who plants a vineyard, and does not eat of the fruit thereof? Or, who feeds a flock, and does not drink of the milk of the flock?

Do I say these things according to man? Does not the Law say the same also?

For it is written in the Law of Moses, ‘You shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the corn’. Is God concerned for oxen?

10 Or does He not undoubtedly say this for our sakes? It is for our sakes this is written. That he who plows, should plow in hope, and that he who threshes in hope, should be a partaker of His hope.

11 If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap earthly things from you?

12 If others are partakers of this authority over you, should not we be more so? Nevertheless, we have not used this authority, but endure all things, that we should not hinder the Gospel of Christ.

13 Do you not know that those who administer the holy things, eat of the things of the Temple? And those who attend the altar are partakers with the altar?

14 So also has the Lord ordained, that those who preach the Gospel, should live from the Gospel.

15 But I have used none of these things. Nor have I written these things that it should be so done to me. For it would be better for me to die, than that anyone should make my exultation void.

16 For though I preach the Gospel, I have nothing in which to exult. For compulsion is laid upon me, and woe is to me, if I do not preach the Gospel.

17 For if I do it willingly, I have a reward. But if I do it against my will, the stewardship is entrusted to me.

18 What is my reward then? Truly, that when I preach the Gospel, I make the Gospel of Christ free, that I do not abuse my authority in the Gospel.

19 For though I am free from all, yet have I made myself servant to all, that I may win the more.

20 And to the Jews, I become as a Jew, that I may win the Jews. To those who are under the Law, as though I were under the Law, that I may win those who are under the Law.

21 To those who are outside the Law, as though I were outside the Law, (being not without Law as pertaining to God, but in the Law through Christ) that I may win those who are outside the Law.

22 To the weak I become as weak, that I may win the weak. I have been made all things to all mankind, that I might by all means save some.

23 And this I do for the Gospel’s sake, that I might be a partaker thereof with you.

24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, yet one receives the prize? So, run that you may obtain it.

25 And everyone who contends is temperate in all things. And they do so to obtain a corruptible crown; but we for an incorruptible.

26 I, therefore, so run; not uncertainly. I so fight, and not as one who beats the air.

27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection. Lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.

Ezekiel 7

Moreover the Word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“Also, you son of man, thus says the Lord GOD: ‘An end has come to the land of Israel. The end has come upon the four corners of the land.

‘Now has the end come upon you. And I will send My wrath upon you, and will judge you according to your ways, and will lay all your abominations upon you.

‘My Eye shall not spare you, nor will I have pity. But I will lay your ways upon you. And your abomination shall be in the midst of you. And you shall know that I am the LORD.’

“Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, a disaster! A singular disaster has come!

‘An end has come! The end has come! It watched for you. Behold, it has come.

‘Doom has come to you who dwell in the land! The time has come, the day of trouble is near, and not the joyful shout of the mountains.

‘Now I will shortly pour out My wrath upon you and fulfill My anger upon you. I will judge you according to your ways and will lay all your abominations upon you.

‘My Eye shall not spare you, nor will I have pity. But I will lay upon you according to your ways. And your abominations shall be in the midst of you. And you shall know that I, the LORD, strike.

10 ‘Behold the day. Behold, it has come. Doom has gone forth. The rod flourishes. Pride has budded.

11 ‘Cruelty has risen up into a rod of wickedness. None of them shall remain, nor their riches, nor any of them, nor shall there be lamentation for them.

12 ‘The time has come. The day draws near. Do not let the buyer rejoice or let him who sells mourn. For the wrath is upon their whole multitude.

13 ‘For he who sells shall not return to that which is sold, although they were still alive. For the vision was for their whole multitude, and they did not return. Nor does anyone encourage himself in the iniquity of his life.

14 ‘They have blown the trumpet and prepared everyone. But no one goes to the battle. For My wrath is upon their whole multitude.

15 ‘The sword is outside, and the pestilence and the famine within. He who is in the field shall die with the sword. And he who is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him.

16 ‘But those who flee away from them shall escape, and shall be in the mountains, like the doves of the valleys. All of them shall mourn, every one, for his iniquity.

17 ‘All hands shall be weak, and all knees shall fall away as water.

18 ‘They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth. And fear shall cover them, and shame upon all faces, and baldness upon their heads.

19 ‘They shall fling their silver into the streets, and their gold shall be far away. Their silver and their gold cannot deliver them on the day of the wrath of the LORD. They shall neither satisfy their souls nor fill their stomachs. For this ruin is for their iniquity.

20 ‘He had also set the beauty of His ornaments in majesty. But they made images of their abominations and of their idols in them. Therefore, I have set it far away from them.

21 ‘And I will give it into the hands of the strangers, to be plundered, and to the wicked of the Earth, to be robbed. And they shall pollute it.

22 ‘I will also turn My Face from them, and they shall pollute My secret place. For the destroyers shall enter it and defile it.

23 ‘Make a chain, for the land is full of the judgment of blood. And the city is full of cruelty.

24 ‘Therefore, I will bring the most wicked of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses. I will also make the pomp of the mighty cease. And their holy places shall be defiled.

25 ‘When destruction comes, they shall seek peace, and shall not have it.

26 ‘Calamity shall come upon calamity, and rumor shall be upon rumor. Then they shall seek a vision from the Prophet. But the Law shall perish from the Priest, and counsel from the Ancient.

27 ‘The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people in the land shall be troubled. I will do to them according to their ways. And I will judge them according to their judgments. And they shall know that I am the LORD.’”

Psalm 45

45 My heart stirs with good words. I will speak of my works concerning the King. My tongue is as the pen of a swift writer.

You are more beautiful than the children of men. Grace is poured in Your lips because God has blessed You forever.

Gird Your sword upon Your Thigh, O Most Mighty, Your worship and Your Glory!

And prosper with Your Glory! Ride upon the Word of Truth and of humility and of righteousness. So, Your right Hand shall teach You terrible things.

Your arrows are sharp to pierce the heart of the king’s enemies. The people shall fall under You.

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of Your Kingdom is a scepter of righteousness.

You love righteousness and hate wickedness, because God, even Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows.

All Your garments smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia, of the ivory palaces where they have made You glad.

King’s daughters were among Your honorable women. Upon Your right hand stood the queen in a vesture of gold of Ophir.

10 Hear, O daughter, and consider and incline your ear. Also, forget your own people and your father’s house.

11 So shall the King have pleasure in your beauty; for He is your LORD. And reverence Him.

12 And the daughter of Tyre, with the rich of the people, shall do homage before your face with presents.

13 The King’s daughter is all glorious within. Her clothing is of embroidered gold.

14 She shall be brought to the King in clothing of needlework. The virgins who follow after her (her companions) shall be brought to You.

15 With joy and gladness they shall be brought and shall enter into the King’s palace.

16 Your children shall be in place of your fathers. You shall make them princes through all the Earth.

17 I will make Your Name remembered through all generations. Therefore, the people shall give thanks to You. World without end. To him who excels upon Alamoth: a song committed to the sons of Korah.
