1 Samuel 27

27 And David said in his heart, “I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul. Is it not better for me that I save myself in the land of the Philistines—so that Saul may lose hope in seeking me anymore in all the territory of Israel—and so escape out of his hand?”

Therefore, David arose. And he and the six hundred men who were with him went to Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each man with his household and David with his two wives (Ahinoam the Jezreelite and Abigail the wife Nabal the Carmelite).

And it was told to Saul that David had fled to Gath. So he sought no more for him.

And David said to Achish, “If I have now found grace in your eyes, let them give me a place in some other city of the country, so that I may dwell there. For why would your servant dwell in the head city of the kingdom with you?”

Then Achish gave him Ziklag that same day. Therefore, Ziklag belongs to the kings of Judah to this day.

And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was four months and some days.

Then David and his men went up and invaded the Geshurites and the Girzites and the Amalekites. For they inhabited the land from the beginning, as you go to Shur, even to the land of Egypt.

And David struck the land and left neither man nor woman alive and took sheep and oxen and donkeys and camels and apparel and returned and came to Achish.

10 And Achish said, “Where have you made a raid this day?” And David answered, “Against the South of Judah and against the South of the Jerahmeelites and against the South of the Kenites.”

11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring them to Gath, saying, “Lest they should tell on us, and say, “So did David! And so has been his manner all the while that he has dwelt in the country of the Philistines!’”

12 And Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people of Israel utterly abhor him. Therefore, he shall be my servant forever.”

1 Corinthians 8

And concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.

Now, if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.

But if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.

Therefore, concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one.

For though there are those that are called gods, whether in Heaven or on Earth (as there are many gods, and many lords.)

Yet to us there is but one God, the Father (from Whom are all things, and we are in Him), and one Lord Jesus Christ, (through Whom are all things, and we are through Him).

But not everyone has that knowledge. For some, being conscience of the idol until now, eat as though sacrificing to an idol. And so, their conscience, being weak, is defiled.

But food does not make us commendable to God. For we are neither more so if we eat it, nor less so if we do not eat it.

But take heed, lest by any means this power of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.

10 For if anyone sees you, who has knowledge, sit at table in the idols’ temple, shall not his conscience, which is weak, be emboldened to eat those things which are sacrificed to idols?

11 And through your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died.

12 Now when you sin so against the brothers, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.

13 So if food offends my brother, I will eat no flesh while the world stands, that I may not offend my brother.

Ezekiel 6

Again, the Word of the LORD came to me, saying:

“Son of man, set your face towards the mountains of Israel. And prophesy against them,

“and say, ‘You mountains of Israel, hear the Word of the Lord GOD! Thus says the Lord GOD to the mountains and to the hills, to the rivers and to the valleys: “Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you. And I will destroy your high places.

“And your altars shall be desolate, and your images of the Sun shall be broken. And I will cast down your slain men before your idols.

“And I will lay the dead carcasses of the children of Israel before their idols, and I will scatter your bones all around your altars.

“In all your dwelling places, the cities shall be desolate and the high places shall be laid waste, so that your altars shall be made waste, and desolate, and your idols shall be broken, and cease, and your images of the Sun shall be cut in pieces and your works shall be abolished.

“And the slain shall fall in the midst of you. And you shall know that I am the LORD.

“Yet, I will leave a remnant, so that you may have some who shall escape the sword among the nations when you shall be scattered through the countries.

“And those of you who escape shall remember Me among the nations where they shall be in captivity, because I am grieved for their whorish hearts which have departed from Me, and for their eyes which have gone a whoring after their idols. And they shall be displeased in themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

10 “And they shall know that I am the LORD, that I have not said in vain that I would bring this misery upon them.”

11 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Strike with your hand, and stretch forth with your foot, and say, ‘Alas,’ for all the wicked abominations of the House of Israel! For they shall fall by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.

12 “He who is far away shall die of pestilence. And he who is near shall fall by the sword. And he who remains and is besieged shall die by famine. Thus will I accomplish My wrath upon them.

13 “Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when their slain men shall be among their idols, all around altars, upon every high hill, in all the tops of the mountains, and under every green tree, and under every thick oak (the place where they offered sweet savor to all their idols).

14 “So will I stretch My Hand upon them and make the land waste and desolate, from the wilderness to Diblath, in all their habitations. And they shall know that I am the LORD.”’”

Psalm 44

44 We have heard with our ears, O God. Our fathers have told us the works that You have done in their days, in the old time.

You have driven out the heathen with Your hand and planted them. You have destroyed the people and caused them to go.

For they did not inherit the land by their own sword (nor did their own arm save them) but by Your right hand, and Your arm, and the light of Your countenance; because You favored them.

You are my King, O God! Send help to Jacob!

Through You we have thrust back our adversaries. By Your Name we have trodden down those who rose up against us.

For I do not trust in my bow; nor can my sword save me.

But You have saved us from our adversaries and have put those who hate us to confusion.

We will praise God continually and will confess Your Name forever. Selah.

But now, You are far off and put us to confusion, and do not go forth with our armies.

10 You make us turn back from the adversary, and those who hate us get plunder for themselves.

11 You give us as sheep to be eaten and scatter us among the nations.

12 You sell Your people without gain, and do not increase their price.

13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a jest and laughing stock to those who surround us.

14 You make us a proverb among the nations, and a nodding of the head among the people.

15 My confusion is daily before me and the shame of my face has covered me,

16 because of the voice of the slanderer and rebuker, because of the enemy and avenger.

17 All this has come upon us. Still, we do not forget You. Nor do we deal falsely concerning Your Covenant.

18 Our heart is not turned back, nor have our steps gone out of Your paths;

19 even though You have struck us down into the place of dragons and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the Name of our God, and held up our hands to a strange god,

21 shall not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

22 Surely, for Your sake we are killed continually and are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Up! Why do You sleep, O LORD? Awake! Be not far off forever.

24 Why do you hide Your face and forget our misery and our affliction?

25 For our soul is beaten down to the dust. Our belly clings to the ground.

26 Rise up for our succor; and redeem us for Your mercy’s sake. To him who excels on Shoshannim: a song of love to give instruction, committed to the sons of Korah.
