1 Samuel 26

26 Again the Ziphites came to Saul, to Gibeah, saying, “Does not David hide himself on the hill of Hachilah, before Jeshimon?”

Then Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

And Saul camped on the hill of Hachilah (which is before Jeshimon), by the roadside. Now David remained in the wilderness. And he saw that Saul came after him, into the wilderness.

For David had sent out spies and understood that Saul had indeed come.

Then David arose and came to the place where Saul had camped. And David beheld the place where Saul lay and Abner, the son of Ner, who was his chief captain (for Saul lay in the fort and the people camped all around him).

Then David spoke, and said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul, to the camp?” Then Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”

So David and Abishai came down to the people at night. And behold, Saul lay sleeping inside the fort, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head: And Abner and the people lay all around him.

Then Abishai said to David, “God has closed your enemy into your hand this day! Now, therefore, please let me strike him once with a spear to the earth. And I will not strike him again.”

And David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him. For who can lay his hand on the LORD’s anointed and be guiltless?”

10 Moreover David said, “As the LORD lives, either the LORD shall strike him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall descend into battle and perish.

11 “The LORD keep me from laying my hand upon the LORD’s anointed! But now, please take the spear that is at his head, and the pot of water, and let us go from here.”

12 So David took the spear and the pot of water from Saul’s head, and they got away. And no man saw it or knew it, nor did any awaken, but they were all asleep. For the LORD had sent a dead sleep upon them.

13 Then David went to the other side and stood on the top of a hill, far away, a great space being between them.

14 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Do you not hear, Abner?” Then Abner answered, and said, “Who are you who cries to the king?”

15 And David said to Abner, “Are you not a man?! And who is like you in Israel?! Why, then, have you not kept your lord the king?! For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord!

16 “This is not well done by you! As the LORD lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept your master, the LORD’s anointed! And now, see where the king’s spear is, and the pot of water that was at his head!”

17 And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?!” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king!”

18 And he said, “Why does my lord persecute his servant like this?! For what have I done?! Or what evil is in my hand?!

19 “Now, therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant! If the LORD has stirred you up against me, let Him smell the savor of a Sacrifice! But if the children of men have done it, cursed be they before the LORD! For they have cast me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’

20 “Now, therefore, do not let my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD! For the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as one would hunt a partridge in the mountains!”

21 Then Saul said, “I have sinned! Come back, my son David! For I will do you no more harm, because my soul was precious in your eyes this day! Behold, I have done foolishly and have erred exceedingly!”

22 Then David answered, and said, “Behold the king’s spear! Let one of the young men come over and fetch it!

23 “And let the LORD reward every man according to his righteousness and faithfulness! For the LORD had delivered you into my hands this day, but I would not lay my hand upon the LORD’s anointed!

24 “And behold, just as your life was highly valued this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued in the eyes of the LORD, so that He may deliver me out of all tribulation!”

25 Then Saul said to David, “Blessed are you, my son David! For you shall do great things and also prevail!” So, David went his way. And Saul returned to his place.

1 Corinthians 7

Now, concerning the things about which you wrote to me, it is good for a man not to touch a woman.

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have a wife for himself, and let every woman have her own husband.

Let the husband give to the wife her due affection, and likewise also the wife to the husband.

The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. And likewise, also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.

Do not deprive one another, unless with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. And come together again, so that Satan does not tempt you for your intemperance.

Yet, I speak this by permission, not by Commandment.

For I would that all were still as I myself. But everyone has his proper gift from God, one after this manner, and another after that.

Therefore I say to the unmarried, and to the widows, it is good for them if they remain just as I.

But if they cannot abstain, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn.

10 And to the married, I command: (not I, but the Lord) Let not the wife leave her husband.

11 But if she does leave, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband. And let not the husband leave his wife.

12 Now, to the rest I speak (I, not the Lord). If any brother has a wife who does not believe, if she is content to dwell with him, let him not leave her.

13 And the woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is content to dwell with her, let her not leave him.

14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in the husband, or else your children would be unclean. But now they are holy.

15 But, if the unbeliever leaves, let him leave. A brother or a sister is not in bondage in such cases. But God has called us into peace.

16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you shall save your husband? Or how do you know, O man, whether you shall save your wife?

17 But as God has distributed to everyone, as the Lord has called everyone, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all churches.

18 Is any man called circumcised? Let him not be uncircumcised. Is any called uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised.

19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the Commandments of God.

20 Let everyone remain in the same vocation to which he was called.

21 Are you called as a slave? Do not worry. But if you still may be free, rather use that.

22 For he who is called in the Lord as a slave is the Lord’s freeman. Likewise, he who is called in freedom, is Christ’s slave.

23 You are bought with a price. Do not become the slaves of man.

24 Brothers, let everyone, wherein he was called, remain therein with God.

25 Now concerning virgins, I have no Commandment of the Lord. But I give my advice, as one who has obtained mercy from the Lord to be faithful.

26 Because of this present constraint, I assume that it is good, and that it is good for anyone to be so.

27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife.

28 But if you take a wife, you do not sin. And if a virgin marries, she does not sin. Nevertheless, such shall have trouble in the flesh. But I am sparing you.

29 And this I say, brothers, because the time is short: that from now on those who have wives should be as though they had none,

30 and those who weep as though they did not weep, and those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, and those who buy as though they did not possess,

31 and those who use this world as though they do not abuse it. For the appearance of this world is passing away.

32 And I would have you without cares. The unmarried cares for things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.

33 But he who is married cares for the things of the world, how he may please his wife.

34 Also, there is difference between a virgin and a wife. The unmarried woman cares for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy, both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

35 And this I speak for your own benefit. Not to tangle you in a snare, but that you may be respectable and serve the Lord without distraction.

36 But if any man thinks he is behaving less than optimally toward his virgin, if she has passed the flower of her age, and so requires, let him do what he will. He does not sin. Let her be married.

37 Nevertheless, he who stands firm in his heart, that he has no need, but has power over his own will, and has so decreed in his heart, that he will watch over his virgin, he does well.

38 So then, he who gives her to marriage, does well. But he who does not give her to marriage, does better.

39 The wife is bound by the law, as long as her husband lives. But if her husband is dead, she is free to marry whomever she wishes, only in the Lord.

40 But she is more blessed if she so remains, in my judgment. And I think that I also have the Spirit of God.

Ezekiel 5

“And you, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a barber’s razor, and cause it to pass over your head and over your beard. Then take a scale to weigh and divide the hair.

“You shall burn a third of it with fire, in the center of the city, after the days of the siege are completed. And you shall take a third and strike around it with the sword. And you shall scatter a third to the wind. And I will draw a sword afterward.

“You shall also take a few of them in number and bind them in your clothes.

“Then take them again and cast them into the midst of the fire and burn them in the fire. From there a fire shall come forth into all the House of Israel.

“Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘This is Jerusalem. I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries all around her.

‘And she has changed My Judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my Statutes more than the countries that are all around her. For they have refused My Judgments, and My Statutes. They have not walked in them.’

“Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Because your multitude is greater than the nations that are all around you, and you have not walked in My Statutes, nor have you kept My Judgments —you have not even done according to the judgments of the nations that are all around you —

“therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, I, even I come against you, and will execute judgment in the midst of you in the sight of the nations.

‘And I will do in you that which I have never done before, and the like of which I will never do again, because of all your abominations.

10 ‘For in the midst of you the fathers shall eat their sons, and the sons shall eat their fathers. And I will execute judgment in you. And I will scatter the whole remnant of you into all the winds.

11 ‘Therefore, as I live,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘surely, because you have defiled My Sanctuary with all your filthiness, and with all your abominations, therefore I will also destroy you. Nor shall My Eye spare. Nor will I have any pity.

12 ‘A third of you shall die from pestilence and shall be consumed with famine in the midst of you. A third shall fall by the sword all around you. And I will scatter a third of you into all winds. And I will draw a sword afterward.

13 ‘Thus shall My anger be ended. And I will cause My wrath to cease in them. And I will be comforted. And they shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken it in My zeal, when I have ended My wrath upon them.

14 ‘Moreover, I will make you desolate and abhorred among the nations that are all around you, in the sight of all who pass by.

15 ‘So you shall be a reproach and shame, a chastisement and an astonishment to the nations that are all around you, when I shall execute judgments in you, in anger and in wrath and in sharp rebukes. I, the LORD, have spoken it.

16 ‘When I shall send upon them the miserable arrows of famine, which shall be for destruction, which I will send to destroy you, I will increase the famine upon you and will break your staff of bread.

17 ‘So I will send upon you famine and calamitous beasts. And they shall plunder you. And pestilence and blood shall pass through you. And I will bring the sword upon you.’ I, the LORD, have spoken it.”

Psalm 42-43

42 As the deer brays for the rivers of water, so panted my soul after You, O God.

My soul thirsts for God, even for the living God. When shall I come and appear before the presence of God?

My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me daily, “Where is your God?”

When I remembered these things, I poured out my very heart; because I had gone with the multitude and led them into the House of God with the voice of singing and praise, as a multitude that keeps a feast.

Why are you cast down, my soul, and unquiet within me? Wait on God; for I will still give Him thanks for the help of His presence.

My God, my soul is cast down within me because I remembered You from the land of Jordan, and Hermon, and from the Mount Mizar.

One deep calls another deep by the noise of Your waterspouts. All Your waves and Your floods have gone over me.

The LORD will grant His lovingkindness in the day; and in the night shall I sing of Him a prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God, my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning when the enemy oppresses?”

10 As a sword shattering my bones, my enemies reproach me, saying daily to me, “Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Wait on God. For I will yet give thanks to Him, to the Face of my Deliverer and my God.

43 Judge me, O God, and defend my cause against the unmerciful people. Deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.

For You are the God of my strength. Why have You put me away? Why do I go so mourning when the enemy oppressed me?

Send Your light and Your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your Holy Mountain, and to Your Tabernacles.

Then I will go to the altar of God, even to the God of my joy and gladness. And upon the harp will I give thanks to You, O God, my God.

Why are You cast down, my soul? And why are You disquieted within me? Wait on God; for I will still give Him thanks, my present help and my God. To him who excels: A Psalm to give instruction, committed to the sons of Korah.
