The Descendants of Reuben

The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but when he defiled the couch of his father, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so that he was not enrolled in the genealogy as the firstborn, though Judah became strong among his brothers and a chief came from him, but the birthright belonged to Joseph). The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, Beerah his son, a leader of the Reubenites, whom Tiglath-Pilneser king of Assyria deported into exile. And his kinsmen by their families, when their generations were recorded in the genealogy: the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah, and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel, who lived in Aroer, as far as Nebo and Baal-Meon. He also lived to the east up to the entrance of the desert this side of[a] the River Euphrates, for their livestock had multiplied in the land of Gilead. 10 And in the days of Saul they made war against the Hagrites, and they[b] fell into their hand. And they lived in their tents in all the region east of Gilead.

The Descendants of Gad

11 And the sons of Gad lived near to them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah: 12 Joel the chief, Shapham the second, Janai, and Shaphat in Bashan. 13 And their kinsmen according to their fathers’ households: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber, seven. 14 These were the sons of Abihail the son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz. 15 Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was chief in their fathers’ households. 16 And they lived in Gilead, in Bashan, and in its towns,[c] and in all the pasturelands of Sharon to their limits. 17 All of them were enrolled in the genealogy in the days of Jotham, king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam, king of Israel.

18 The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had valiant[d] men who carried a shield and a sword, and archers, and who were expert in war, forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty for going out as an army. 19 And they made war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab. 20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hand, for they cried out to God in the battle, and he responded to their prayer because they trusted in him. 21 And they captured their livestock: fifty thousand of their camels; two hundred and fifty thousand sheep; two thousand donkeys; and one hundred thousand men alive. 22 For many were slain because the war was of God. And they lived under them until the exile.

The Half-Tribe of Manasseh

23 And the sons of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land from Bashan to Baal-Hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon. They were numerous. 24 Now these were the heads of their fathers’ households: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of strength, famous men,[e] heads of their fathers’ households. 25 But they transgressed against the God of their ancestors[f] and prostituted themselves after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 26 So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tiglath-Pilneser, king of Assyria, and he took them into exile, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, until this day.

[g] The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. The children of Amram: Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Eleazar fathered Phinehas; Phinehas fathered Abishua; Abishua fathered Bukki; Bukki fathered Uzzi; Uzzi fathered Zerahiah; Zerahiah fathered Meraioth; Meraioth fathered Amariah; Amariah fathered Ahitub; Ahitub fathered Zadok; Zadok fathered Ahimaaz; Ahimaaz fathered Azariah; Azariah fathered Johanan; 10 and Johanan fathered Azariah. It was he who served as priest in the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem. 11 And Azariah fathered Amariah; Amariah fathered Ahitub; 12 Ahitub fathered Zadok; Zadok fathered Shallum; 13 Shallum fathered Hilkiah; Hilkiah fathered Azariah; 14 Azariah fathered Seraiah; Seraiah fathered Jehozadak. 15 And Jehozadak went into exile when Yahweh sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.

The Descendants of Levi

16 The sons of Levi: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. 17 Now these are the names of the sons of Gershom: Libni and Shimei. 18 The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 19 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. Now these are the families of the Levites according to their ancestors.[h] 20 Of Gershom: Libni his son, Jahath his son, Zimmah his son, 21 Joah his son, Iddo his son, Zerah his son, Jeatherai his son. 22 The sons of Kohath: Amminadab his son, Korah his son, Assir his son, 23 Elkanah his son, Ebiasaph his son, Assir his son, 24 Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, and Shaul his son. 25 The sons of Elkanah: Amasai and Ahimoth, 26 Elkanah his son, Zophai his son, Nahath his son, 27 Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son. 28 The sons of Samuel: Joel[i] his firstborn and Abijah the second. 29 The sons of Merari: Mahli, Libni his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son, 30 Shimea his son, Haggiah his son, and Asaiah his son.

David’s Appointees for Music in the Temple

31 Now these are the men whom David appointed for control of singing[j] in the house of Yahweh where the ark rested. 32 They were ministering with song before the tabernacle of the tent of assembly[k] until Solomon built the temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem. And they stood according to their order with respect to their duty. 33 Now these are those who served and their sons. Of the sons of the Kohathites: Heman the singer, the son of Joel, son of Samuel, 34 son of Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Eliel, son of Toah, 35 son of Zuph, son of Elkanah, son of Mahath, son of Amasai, 36 son of Elkanah, son of Joel, son of Azariah, son of Zephaniah, 37 son of Tahath, son of Assir, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, 38 son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, son of Israel; 39 and his brother Asaph, who stood on his right namely, Asaph the son of Berechiah, son of Shimea, 40 son of Michael, son of Baaseiah, son of Malkijah, 41 son of Ethni, son of Zerah, son of Adaiah, 42 son of Ethan, son of Zimmah, son of Shimei, 43 son of Jahath, son of Gershom, son of Levi. 44 On the left were their brothers, the sons of Merari: Ethan the son of Kishi, son of Abdi, son of Malluch, 45 son of Hashabiah, son of Amaziah, son of Hilkiah, 46 son of Amzi, son of Bani, son of Shemer, 47 son of Mahli, son of Mushi, son of Merari, son of Levi. 48 And their brothers the Levites were appointed for all the service of the tabernacle of the house of God. 49 But Aaron and his sons made offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

The Descendants of Aaron

50 Now these are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son, 51 Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son, 52 Meraioth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son, 53 Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son. 54 And these are their dwellings according to their settlements within their borders: to the sons of Aaron of the clans of Kohathites, for the first lot was theirs, 55 and they gave to them Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasturelands, 56 but the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 57 To the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge: Hebron, Libnah with its pasturelands, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands, 58 Hilen with its pasturelands, Debir with its pasturelands, 59 Ashan with its pasturelands, and Beth-Shemesh with its pasturelands. 60 And from the tribe of Benjamin, Geba with its pasturelands, Alemeth with its pasturelands, and Anathoth with its pasturelands. Hebrews 10

Christ’s One Sacrifice for Sin

10 For the law, possessing a shadow of the good things that are about to come, not the form of things itself, is never able year by year[a] by means of the same sacrifices which they offer without interruption to make perfect those who draw near. For otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the ones who worship, having been purified once and for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in them there is a reminder of sins year by year[b]. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Therefore, when he[c] came into the world, he said,

“Sacrifice and offering you did not want,
    but a body you prepared for me;
you did not delight in whole burnt offerings and offerings for sins.
    Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
in the roll of the book it is written about me—
    to do your will, O God.’

When he says above,

“Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin
    you did not want, nor did you delight in,”[d]

which are offered according to the law, then he has said,

“Behold, I have come to do your will.”[e]

He takes away the first in order to establish the second, 10 by which will we are made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 And every priest stands every day serving and offering the same sacrifices many times, which are never able to take away sins. 12 But this one, after he[f] had offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from now on waiting until his enemies are made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are made holy. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will decree for them
    after those days, says the Lord:
I am putting my laws on their hearts,
    and I will write them on their minds.”[g]

17 He also says,

“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will never remember again.”[h]

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Hold Fast the Confession of Our Hope

19 Therefore, brothers, since we[i] have confidence for the entrance into the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way which he inaugurated for us through the curtain, that is, his flesh, 21 and since we have[j] a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us approach with a true heart in the full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for the one who promised is faithful. 24 And let us think about how to stir one another up to love[k] and good works, 25 not abandoning our meeting together[l], as is the habit of some, but encouraging each other, and by so much more as you see the day drawing near.

A Serious Warning Against Continuing Deliberate Sin

26 For if[m] we keep on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that is about to consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment do you think the person will be considered worthy of who treats with disdain the Son of God and who considers ordinary the blood of the covenant by which he was made holy and who insults the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know the one who said,

“Vengeance is mine, I will repay,”[n]

and again,

“The Lord will judge his people.”[o]

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32 But remember the former days in which, after you[p] were enlightened, you endured a great struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed both to insults and to afflictions, and sometimes becoming sharers with those who were treated in this way. 34 For you both sympathized with the prisoners and put up with the seizure of your belongings with joy because you[q] knew that you yourselves had a better and permanent possession. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, in order that after you[r] have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. 37 For yet

“a very, very little while,
    and the one who is coming will come and will not delay.
38 But my righteous one will live by faith,
    and if he shrinks back, my soul is not well pleased with him.”[s]

39 But we are not among those who shrink back to destruction, but among those who have faith to the preservation of our souls.

Amos 4

Social and Spiritual Corruption

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who live on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the powerless, who crush the poor, who say to their husbands, “Bring something so that we may drink!” My Lord Yahweh has sworn by his holiness that, “Behold, the days are coming upon you when they[a] will take you away with hooks, even the last of you with fishing hooks. And you shall leave through breaches in the wall, each one in front of her. You will be dragged off toward Harmon,”[b] declares[c] Yahweh. “Come to Bethel and transgress; to Gilgal and multiply transgression![d] Bring your sacrifices in the morning and your tithes on the third day.[e] And bring a thank offering of unleavened bread, and proclaim freewill offerings, pronounce them, for so you love to do, O people[f] of Israel,” is the declaration of my Lord Yahweh. “And I[g] in turn gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities and lack of bread in all your places. Yet you did not return to me,” is the declaration of Yahweh. “And I also withheld the rain from you when there were still three months to the harvest. And I would send rain on one city and send no rain on another city. One tract of land will be rained on, and the tract of land on which it does not rain[h] will dry up. So two or three cities wandered to one city to drink water and they were not satisfied, yet you did not return to me,” is the declaration of Yahweh. “I struck you with blight and with mildew. Frequently the cutting locust devoured your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees, yet you did not return to me,” is the declaration of Yahweh. 10 “I sent among you a plague in the manner of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, along with the captivity of your horses. And I made the stench of your camps go up into your nostrils, yet you did not return to me,” is the declaration of Yahweh. 11 “I overthrew some of you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a stick snatched from the fire, and yet you did not return to me,” is the declaration of Yahweh. 12 “Therefore, thus I will do to you, O Israel. Because I will do this to you, O Israel, prepare to meet your God! 13 Yes, here is the one who forms the mountains, and the one who creates the wind, and the one who reveals to humans what his thoughts are, and the one who treads on the heights of the earth; Yahweh, the God of hosts, is his name!”

Psalm 148-150

Let All Creation Praise Yahweh

148 Praise Yah.[a]
Praise Yahweh from the heavens;
praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all his angels;
praise him, all his hosts.[b]
Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, all stars of light.
Praise him, highest heavens,[c]
and waters above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of Yahweh,
because he commanded and they were created.
And he put them in place forever and ever,
by a decree he gave that will not pass away.
Praise Yahweh from the earth—
great sea creatures and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and cloud,[d]
stormy wind doing his bidding,[e]
the mountains and all hills,
fruit trees and all cedars,
10 beasts and all cattle,[f]
creeping things and flying birds,[g]
11 kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all judges of the earth,
12 young men and young women as well,
the old together with the young—
13 let them praise the name of Yahweh,
because his name alone is is exalted.
His splendor is above earth and heavens.
14 And he has raised high a horn for his people,
praise for all his faithful—
for the children of Israel,
a people close to him.
Praise Yah.[h]

Praise to God for His Future Judgment

149 Praise Yah.[i]
Sing to Yahweh a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in its maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name with dancing;
let them sing praises to him with tambourine and lyre.
For Yahweh takes pleasure in his people;
he glorifies the afflicted with salvation.
Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy on their beds.
Let the extolling of God be in their throat,
and a double-edged sword in their hand,
to execute vengeance on the nations
and punishment on the peoples,[j]
to bind their kings with chains
and their nobles[k] with fetters of iron,
to execute on them the judgment that is decreed.[l]
This will be honor for all his faithful ones;
Praise Yah.[m]

Let Everything Praise Yahweh

150 Praise Yah.[n]
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty firmament.
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to the abundance of his greatness.
Praise him with blast of horn;
praise him with harp and lyre.
Praise him with tambourine and dancing;
praise him with strings and flute.
Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with clashing cymbals.
Every breathing thing,
let it praise Yah.[o]
Praise Yah.[p]
