Yahweh’s Challenge to Solomon

It happened that as Solomon finished the building of the house of Yahweh, the king’s house, and all the things Solomon desired to do, Yahweh appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him in Gibeon. Yahweh said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea which you have made before me. I have consecrated this house which you have built, by putting my name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. As for you, if you walk before me as David your father walked, with integrity of heart[a] and with uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep my ordinances and my judgments, then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, as I promised David your father, saying, ‘A man will not be cut off for you from upon the throne of Israel.’

“If ever you or any of your descendants[b] turn from following me and do not keep my commandments and my ordinances that I have set before you and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then I will cut Israel off from the face of the land that I have given to them, even the house which I have consecrated for my name I will cast away from my face; and Israel shall become a proverb and an object of taunting among all the peoples. This house shall become a heap of ruins; all those passing by will be appalled by it and hiss, and they will say, ‘On what account did Yahweh do this to this land and to this house?’ And they will say, ‘Because they have forsaken Yahweh their God who brought their ancestors[c] out from the land of Egypt and they embraced other gods and bowed down to them and served them. Therefore, Yahweh brought on them all of this disaster.’”

Solomon and Hiram Complete Their Agreement

10 It happened at the end of twenty years in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of Yahweh and the house of the king, 11 since Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with wood of cedar and with wood of cypresses and with the gold according to all his desire, then King Solomon gave twenty cities in the land of the Galilee to Hiram. 12 So Hiram went out from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him, but they were not right in his eyes. 13 So he said, “What are these cities that you have given to me, my brother?” So they are called the land of Cabul until this day.[d] 14 Then Hiram sent to the king a hundred and twenty talents of gold.

Solomon’s Accomplishments

15 This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon conscripted to build the house of Yahweh and his house, the Millo, the walls of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. 16 Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had gone up and captured Gezer and burnt it with fire. He had also killed the Canaanites who were living in the city and had given it as a dowry to his daughter, the wife of Solomon. 17 Solomon rebuilt Gezer and Lower Beth-Horon, 18 as well as Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness in the land; 19 and he also built all of the storage cities which were Solomon’s, the cities for the chariots, the cities for the cavalry, and all of Solomon’s desire that he wanted[e] to build in Jerusalem and in Lebanon and in all the land of his dominion.

20 All of the people who were remaining from the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites who were not of the Israelites,[f] 21 their children who remained after them in the land, whom the Israelites[g] were not able to completely destroy, Solomon conscripted them for forced labor, until this very day. 22 But from the Israelites[h] Solomon did not make a slave, but they were the men of war, his officers, his commanders, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and his cavalry. 23 These were the commanders of the overseers who were over the work for Solomon, five hundred and fifty, ruling over the people doing the work.

24 As soon as the daughter of Pharaoh went up from the city of David to her house which he[i] built for her, then he built the Millo.

25 Solomon sacrificed three times a year: burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar that he had built to Yahweh, and he offered incense with it before Yahweh; and so he completed the house.

26 King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at Ezion-Geber which is near Elath on the shore of the Red Sea[j] in the land of Edom. 27 Hiram sent his servants with the fleet of ships, sailors[k] who knew the sea, with the servants of Solomon. 28 They went to Ophir and imported from there four hundred and twenty talents of gold, and they brought it to King Solomon.

Ephesians 6

Children and Parents

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first[a] commandment with a promise), “in order that it may be well with you, and you may live a long time[b] on the earth.”[c] And fathers, do not make your children angry, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Slaves and Masters

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ, not while being watched[d], as people pleasers, but as slaves of Christ doing the will of God from the heart, serving with goodwill as to the Lord and not to people, because you[e] know that each one of you, whatever good he should do,[f] this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free. And masters, do the same things to them, giving up threats, knowing that both their Lord and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.

Spiritual Warfare

10 Finally, become strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the stratagems of the devil, 12 because our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Because of this, take up the full armor of God, in order that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, girding your waist with truth, and putting on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and binding shoes under your feet with the preparation of the good news of peace, 16 in everything taking up the shield of faith, with which you are able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one, 17 and receive the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 with all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the Spirit, and to this end being alert with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints, 19 and for me, that a word may be given to me at the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for the sake of which I am an ambassador in chains, that in them[g] I may speak freely, as it is necessary for me to speak.

Conclusion and Benediction

21 Now, so that you also may know my circumstances[h], what I am doing, Tychicus, my dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things, 22 whom I have sent[i] to you for this very reason, that you may know our circumstances[j], and he may encourage your hearts.

23 Peace to the brothers and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in incorruptibility.[k]

Ezekiel 39

God’s Destruction of Gog and His Hordes

39 “And you, son of man,[a] prophesy against Gog, and you must say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Look! I am against you Gog, the head[b] leader of Meshech and Tubal, and I will turn you around, and I will drag you along, and I will bring you up from the remote areas of the north, and I will bring you against the mountains of Israel, and I will strike your bow from your left hand,[c] and your arrows from your right hand[d] I will cause to fall. On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all of your troops, and the peoples who are with you, to birds[e] of prey, birds of every wing,[f] and animals of the field I will give you as food. On the surface of the field you will fall, for I myself[g] have spoken,” declares[h] the Lord Yahweh. “And I will send fire against Magog and among the people inhabiting the coastlands in safety,[i] and they will know that I am Yahweh. And my holy name[j] I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I will not let the name of my holiness be profaned anymore, and the nations will know that I am Yahweh, the holy one in Israel. Look! it is coming, and it will happen,” declares[k] the Lord Yahweh. “It is the day about which I have spoken.[l]

“ʻ“And the inhabitants of the towns[m] of Israel will go out, and they will set ablaze, and they will kindle a fire with a weapon[n] and a small shield and a shield,[o] with a bow and with arrows, and with hand clubs[p] and with spears,[q] and so they will light a fire with them, a fire lasting seven years.[r] 10 And they will not carry trees from the field, and they will not chop wood from the forests, for with the weapons[s] they will light a fire; and they will plunder those plundering them, and they will plunder those plundering them,”’ declares[t] the Lord Yahweh.

11 “‘“And then[u] on that day I will give to Gog a grave there[v] in Israel, The Valley of the Travelers, east of the sea,[w] and it will block[x] the travelers and Gog and all of his hordes[y] they will bury there, and they will call it the Valley of Hamon-Gog.[z] 12 And the house of Israel will bury them for seven months to cleanse the land. 13 All of the people of the land will bury them, and it will be an honor for them on the day when I appear,”’ declares[aa] the Lord Yahweh. 14 ʻ“And they will set apart men to continually[ab] go through the land burying the travelers,[ac] the ones left over on the surface of the land to cleanse it; for the whole of[ad] seven months they will explore it. 15 And the ones going through, they will go through within the land, and if anyone sees the bones of a person, then he will build beside it a sign to remain until the buriers have buried him in the Valley of Hamon-Gog.[ae] 16 And furthermore the name of the city there is Hamonah,[af] and thus they will cleanse the land.”’

17 “And you, son of man,[ag] thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Say to all kinds of birds and animals of the field,[ah] “Be gathered, come be gathered from everywhere[ai] to my sacrifice that I am sacrificing for you, a great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel, and you will eat flesh, and you will drink blood. 18 Flesh of warriors you will eat, and the blood of leaders of the land you will drink; rams, young rams and goats, bulls, and the fattened animals of Bashan—all of them! 19 And you will eat fat until you are satiated,[aj] and you will drink blood until you are drunk[ak] from my sacrifice that I sacrifice for you, 20 and you will be satisfied at my table with horse and horsemen and warriors and every man of war,”’ declares[al] the Lord Yahweh. 21 “And I will display my glory among the nations, and all of the nations will see my judgment that I have executed and my hand that I have laid upon them.

22 “And the house of Israel will know that I am Yahweh their God from that day and beyond, 23 and the nations will know that because of their guilt the house of Israel went into exile, because[am] they acted unfaithfully against me, and I hid my face from them, and I gave them into the hand of their foes, and they fell by the sword, all of them. 24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgression I dealt with them, and I hid my face from them.

25 Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob, and I will have compassion on all of the house of Israel, and I will be jealous[an] for my holy name.[ao] 26 And they will forget their disgrace and all of their infidelity that they displayed against me when they dwelt on their soil in safety[ap] with nobody making them afraid.[aq] 27 When I restore them from the nations and I gather them from the countries of their enemies, then I will show myself holy through them before the eyes of many nations. 28 And they will know that I am Yahweh their God, because of when I deported them into the nations, and I reassembled them to their soil, and I will not let any of them remain there any longer.[ar] 29 And I will not hide my face again from them when I pour out my Spirit over[as] the house of Israel,” declares[at] the Lord Yahweh.

Psalm 90

God’s Eternity and Human Frailty

A prayer of Moses, the man of God.[a]

90 O Lord, you have been our help[b] in all generations.[c]
Before the mountains were born
and you brought forth the earth and the world,
even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
You return man to the dust,
saying,[d] “Return, O sons of man.”
For a thousand years in your eyes
are like yesterday when it passes,
or like a watch in the night.
You sweep them away like a flood.
They fall asleep.[e]
In the morning they are like grass that sprouts anew.
In the morning it blossoms and sprouts anew;
by evening it withers and dries up.
For we are brought to an end by your anger,
and we hasten off[f] by your wrath.
You have put our iniquities before you,
our hidden sins into the light of your countenance.
For all of our days dwindle away in your rage;
we complete our years like a sigh.
10 As for the days of our years, within them are seventy years
or if by strength eighty years, and their pride[g] is trouble and disaster,
for it passes quickly and we fly away.
11 Who knows the strength of your anger,
and your rage consistent with[h] the fear due you?
12 So teach us to number our days
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13 Return,[i] O Yahweh. How long?
And have compassion on[j] your servants.
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loyal love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen calamity.
16 Let your work be visible to your servants,
and your majesty to their children.
17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
and establish for us the work of our hands,
yes, the work of our hands, establish it.
