David Becomes King of Israel and Judah

11 Then all Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “See, we are your bone and your flesh. ² In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel. The Lord your God said to you, ‘You will be the shepherd of My people Israel. And you will be king over My people Israel.’” ³ So all the leaders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. And David made an agreement with them in Hebron before the Lord. Then they poured oil on David to be the king of Israel, just as the Lord had said through Samuel. ⁴ David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). And the Jebusites, the people of the land, were there. ⁵ The people of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” But David took the strong-place of Zion (that is, the city of David). ⁶ Now David had said, “Whoever kills a Jebusite first will be captain and leader.” Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became captain. ⁷ Then David lived in the strong-place. So it was called the city of David. ⁸ He built the city all around, from the Millo and then around. And Joab built the rest of the city up again. ⁹ David became greater and greater, for the Lord of All was with him.

David’s Strong Men

¹⁰ These are the leaders of David’s strong men. They gave him much help in his nation, together with all Israel, to make him king. It was just as the Lord had said would happen with Israel. ¹¹ These are the names of David’s strong men. There was Jashobeam the son of Hachmonite, the head of the thirty. He killed 300 men with his spear at one time. ¹² Then there was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite. He was one of the three powerful soldiers. ¹³ He was with David at Pasdammim when the Philistines were gathered there to battle, where there was a piece of ground full of grain. And the people ran away from the Philistines. ¹⁴ But he and his men stood on the piece of ground and fought for it, and killed the Philistines. The Lord saved them by His great power.

¹⁵ Three of the thirty leaders went down to the rock and into the cave of Adullam where David was staying. The Philistine army was staying in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁶ David was in a strong-place, while the Philistine soldiers had their place in Bethlehem. ¹⁷ David had a strong desire. He said, “O, if only someone would give me water to drink from the well by the gate of Bethlehem!” ¹⁸ So the three men broke through the Philistine army. They took water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the Lord, ¹⁹ and said, “Far be it from me that I should do this before my God. Should I drink the blood of these men? For they put their lives in danger to bring it.” So he would not drink it. These things are what the three powerful soldiers did.

²⁰ As for Abishai the brother of Joab, he was the head of the thirty. He fought and killed 300 men with his spear. And his name became well-known like the three. ²¹ He was the best known of the thirty. But he was not as important as the three.

²² Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a powerful soldier from Kabzeel, did great things. He killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He went down and killed a lion inside a deep hole on a day when there was snow. ²³ And he killed an Egyptian who was very tall, five cubits tall. The Egyptian held a spear as big as the cross-piece of a cloth-maker. But Benaiah went down to him with a heavy stick and took the spear from the Egyptian’s hand. Then he killed him with his own spear. ²⁴ These are the things Benaiah the son of Johoiada did. His name was well-known like the three powerful soldiers. ²⁵ He was respected among the thirty. But he was not as important as the three. David chose him to be the head of his house soldiers.

²⁶ The strong men of the armies were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, ²⁷ Shammoth the Harorite, and Helez the Pelonite. ²⁸ And there were Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite, ²⁹ Sibbecai the Hushathite, and Ilai the Ahohite. ³⁰ There were Maharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite, ³¹ Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin, and Benaiah the Pirathonite. ³² There were Hurai of the rivers of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, ³³ Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, ³⁴ the sons of Hashem the Gizonite. There were Jonathan the son of Shagee the Hararite, ³⁵ Ahiam the son of Sachar the Hararite, Eliphal the son of Ur, ³⁶ Hepher the Mecherathite, and Ahijah the Pelonite. ³⁷ There were Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai the son of Ezbai, ³⁸ Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri, ³⁹ Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite. Naharai was the one who carried the battle-clothes of Joab the son of Zeruiah. ⁴⁰ There were Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, ⁴¹ Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai, ⁴² and Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite. Adina was a leader of the Reubenites, and had thirty men with him. ⁴³ Then there were Hanan the son of Maacah, Joshaphat the Mithnite, ⁴⁴ Uzzia the Ashterathite, and Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite. ⁴⁵ There were Jediael the son of Shimri, his brother Joha the Tizite, ⁴⁶ Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam. And there were Ithmah the Moabite, ⁴⁷ Eliel, Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

David’s Army Gets Larger

12 These are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while David was still hidden because of Saul the son of Kish. They were among the strong men who helped him in war. ² They fought with the bow. They could also throw stones or shoot arrows with both the right and left hand. They were Saul’s brothers from Benjamin. ³ The leader was Ahiezer, then Joash. Both of them were sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite. And there were Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth, Beracah, Jehu the Anathothite, ⁴ and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite. He was a strong man among the thirty, and a leader over them. There were Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite, ⁵ Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite. ⁶ There were Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, Jashobeam, the Korahites. ⁷ And there were Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.

⁸ Powerful soldiers came from the Gadites to David in the strong-place in the desert. They had been taught how to fight in war, and could use the battle-covering and spear. Their faces were like the faces of lions. And they were as fast as the deer on the mountains. ⁹ Ezer was the first. Obadiah was the second. Eliab was the third. ¹⁰ Mishmannah was the fourth. Jeremiah was the fifth. ¹¹ Attai was the sixth. Eliel was the seventh. ¹² Johanan was the eighth. Elzabad was the ninth. ¹³ Jeremiah was the tenth. Machbannai was the eleventh. ¹⁴ These Gadites were captains of the army. He who was least led 100. And he who was greatest led 1,000. ¹⁵ These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month when the water was flowing over its sides. They drove away all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.

¹⁶ Then some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to David at his strong-place. ¹⁷ David went out to meet them. He said to them, “If you come in peace to help me, my heart will be joined to you. But if you have come to hand me over to those who hate me, may the God of our fathers see it and speak strong words to you. For I have done nothing wrong.” ¹⁸ Then the Spirit came upon Amasai the captain of the thirty. Amasai said, “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to those who help you! For your God helps you!” Then David received them and made them captains of his soldiers.

¹⁹ Some men from Manasseh came over to David’s side when he was about to go to battle with the Philistines against Saul. But they did not help him. For after talking it over, the Philistine leaders sent him away, saying, “He might go over to Saul’s side with our heads.” ²⁰ The men who came over to David’s side from Manasseh as he went to Ziklag were Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai. They were captains of thousands who belonged to Manasseh. ²¹ They helped David against the army of soldiers who came to fight him. For they were all powerful soldiers, and captains in the army. ²² Each day men came to David to help him. They came until there was a great army, like the army of God.

²³ These are the numbers of the armies who came to David at Hebron. They came to turn the nation of Saul to him, as the Word of the Lord had said. ²⁴ There were 6,800 sons of Judah who carried a battle-covering and spear, ready for war. ²⁵ There were 7,100 powerful soldiers from the sons of Simeon. ²⁶ There were 4,600 sons of Levi. ²⁷ Jehoiada was the leader of the house of Aaron. There were 3,700 men with him. ²⁸ And there was Zadok, a young, powerful soldier, and twenty-two captains from his own father’s house. ²⁹ There were 3,000 sons of Benjamin, Saul’s brothers. For until now most of them had stayed faithful to the house of Saul. ³⁰ There were 20,800 powerful soldiers from the sons of Ephraim. They were important men in their fathers’ houses. ³¹ There were 18,000 men of the half-family group of Manasseh. They were chosen by name to come and make David king. ³² There were 200 captains of the sons of Issachar. They understood the times and had much understanding of what Israel should do. And all their brothers obeyed them. ³³ There were 50,000 men of Zebulun who were soldiers. They could fight in battle with everything used in war. And they helped David as if they had one heart. ³⁴ There were 1,000 captains from Naphtali. With them were 37,000 men with battle-coverings and spears. ³⁵ There were 28,600 Danites ready for battle. ³⁶ There were 40,000 soldiers from Asher, ready for battle. ³⁷ And there were 120,000 sons of Reuben, Gad and the half-family group of Manasseh from the other side of the Jordan. They came with everything used in war.

³⁸ All these were men of war, ready for battle. They came to Hebron with one desire, to make David the king of all Israel. And all the rest of Israel were of one mind to make David king. ³⁹ They were there with David for three days, eating and drinking. For their brothers had made food ready for them. ⁴⁰ And their neighbors brought food, from as far as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali. They brought food on donkeys, camels, horses and cattle. They brought many loaves of bread and figs, many dried grapes, wine, oil, cattle and sheep. For there was joy in Israel.

Christian Living

13 Keep on loving each other as Christian brothers. ² Do not forget to be kind to strangers and let them stay in your home. Some people have had angels in their homes without knowing it. ³ Remember those in prison. Think of them as if you were in prison with them. Remember those who are suffering because of what others have done to them. You may suffer in the same way.

⁴ Marriage should be respected by everyone. God will punish those who do sex sins and are not faithful in marriage.

⁵ Keep your lives free from the love of money. Be happy with what you have. God has said, “I will never leave you or let you be alone.” ^{(A) 6} So we can say for sure, “The Lord is my Helper. I am not afraid of anything man can do to me.” ^(B)

⁷ Remember your leaders who first spoke God’s Word to you. Think of how they lived, and trust God as they did. ⁸ Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

⁹ Do not let the many strange teachings lead you in the wrong way. Our hearts are made strong by God’s loving-favor. Food does not make our hearts strong. Those who obey laws about eating certain foods are not helped by them. ¹⁰ We have an altar from which those who work in the place of worship have no right to eat.

¹¹ The head religious leader takes the blood of animals into the holy place to give it on the altar for sins. But the bodies of the animals are burned outside the city. ¹² It was the same with Jesus. He suffered and died outside the city so His blood would make the people clean from sin. ¹³ So let us go to Him outside the city to share His shame. ¹⁴ For there is no city here on earth that will last forever. We are looking for the one that is coming. ¹⁵ Let us give thanks all the time to God through Jesus Christ. Our gift to Him is to give thanks. Our lips should always give thanks to His name. ¹⁶ Remember to do good and help each other. Gifts like this please God.

¹⁷ Obey your leaders and do what they say. They keep watch over your souls. They have to tell God what they have done. They should have joy in this and not be sad. If they are sad, it is no help to you.

¹⁸ Pray for us. Our hearts tell us we are right. We want to do the right thing always. ¹⁹ Pray for me all the more so that I will be able to come to you soon.

²⁰ God is a God of peace. He raised our Lord Jesus from the dead. Jesus is the Good Shepherd of the sheep. His blood made the New Way of Worship which will last forever. ²¹ May God give you every good thing you need so you can do what He wants. May He do in us what pleases Him through Jesus Christ. May Christ have all the shining-greatness forever! Let it be so. ²² Christian brothers, I beg of you to listen to these words that will help you. This has been a short letter. ²³ I want you to know that Timothy is out of prison. If he comes soon, I will bring him with me when I come to see you. ²⁴ Greet all of your leaders and to all those who belong to Christ. The Christians from the country of Italy greet you. ²⁵ May all of you have God’s loving-favor. Let it be so.

Special Dream about Locusts

7 This is what the Lord God showed me: He was making a gathering of locusts when the spring grain began to grow. The spring grain was after the king’s share had been cut. ² When they had finished eating the grass I said, “Lord God, forgive! O that Jacob may stay alive for he is so small!” ³ So the Lord changed His mind about this. “It will not be,” said the Lord.

Special Dream about Fire

⁴ This is what the Lord God showed me: The Lord God was calling for a punishment by fire. It dried up the deep waters and began to destroy the farm land. ⁵ Then I said, “Lord God, I beg You to stop! How can Jacob stay alive, for he is so small?” ⁶ So the Lord changed His mind about this. “This also will not be,” said the Lord God.

Special Dream about a String

⁷ This is what He showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall made straight by a string held in His hand. ⁸ The Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A string.” Then the Lord said, “See, I am about to put a straight string among my people Israel. I will not change My mind again about punishing them. ⁹ The high places of Isaac will be destroyed. The holy places of Israel will be laid waste. Then I will rise up against the people of Jeroboam with the sword.”

Amos and Amaziah

¹⁰ Then Amaziah, the religious leader of Bethel, sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has made plans against you among the people of Israel. His words will destroy the land. ¹¹ For this is what Amos is saying: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and the people of Israel will be taken away from their own land to a strange land.’” ¹² Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you who tell what is going to happen in the future! Run away to the land of Judah! There eat your bread, and there speak your words! ¹³ But never speak about your special dreams again at Bethel. For it is a holy place of the king, a place where the nation worships.”

¹⁴ Amos answered Amaziah, saying, “I am not a man who tells what is going to happen in the future, or the son of such a man. I take care of sheep and cattle, and grow fig trees. ¹⁵ But the Lord took me from following the flock and said to me, ‘Go and speak in My name to My people Israel.’ ¹⁶ So now hear the Word of the Lord. You are saying, ‘Do not speak against Israel or preach against the people of Isaac.’ ¹⁷ So this is what the Lord says: ‘Your wife will sell the use of her body in the city. Your sons and daughters will be killed by the sword. Your land will be divided and given to others. You yourself will die in an unclean land. And Israel will be driven away from this land to a strange country.’”

The Birth of Jesus ^(A)

2 In those days Caesar Augustus sent out word that the name of every person in the Roman nation must be written in the books of the nation. ² This first writing took place while Quirinius was ruler of Syria.

³ So all the people went to their own cities to have their names written in the books of the nation. ⁴ Joseph went up from the town of Nazareth in the country of Galilee to the town of Bethlehem. It was known as the city of David. He went there because he was from the family of David. ⁵ Joseph went to have his and Mary’s names written in the books of the nation. Mary was his promised wife and soon to become a mother.

⁶ While they were there in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to give birth to her baby. ⁷ Her first son was born. She put cloth around Him and laid Him in a place where cattle are fed. There was no room for them in the place where people stay for the night.

The Shepherds Learn of the Birth of Jesus

⁸ In the same country there were shepherds in the fields. They were watching their flocks of sheep at night. ⁹ The angel of the Lord came to them. The shining-greatness of the Lord shone around them. They were very much afraid. ¹⁰ The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. See! I bring you good news of great joy which is for all people. ¹¹ Today, One Who saves from the punishment of sin has been born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord. ¹² There will be something special for you to see. This is the way you will know Him. You will find the Baby with cloth around Him, lying in a place where cattle are fed.”

¹³ At once many angels from heaven were seen, along with the angel, giving thanks to God. They were saying, ¹⁴ “Greatness and honor to our God in the highest heaven and peace on earth among men who please Him.”

The Shepherds Go to Bethlehem

¹⁵ The angels went from the shepherds back to heaven. The shepherds said to each other, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see what has happened. The Lord has told us about this.” ¹⁶ They went fast and found Mary and Joseph. They found the Baby lying in a place where cattle are fed. ¹⁷ When they saw the Child, they told what the angel said about Him. ¹⁸ All who heard it were surprised at what the shepherds told them. ¹⁹ But Mary hid all these words in her heart. She thought about them much. ²⁰ The shepherds went back full of joy. They thanked God for all they had heard and seen. It happened as the angel had told them.

Jesus Taken to the House of God

²¹ When eight days were over, they did the religious act of becoming a Jew on the Child. He was named Jesus. This name was given to Him by the angel when Mary was told He was to be born. ²² When the days were over for her to be made pure as it was written in the Law of Moses, they took Jesus to Jerusalem to give Him to the Lord. ²³ It is written in the Law of the Lord, “The first-born male born of a woman will be called holy to the Lord.” ²⁴ They were to give a gift of two turtle-doves or two young birds on the altar in worship to the Lord. This was written in the Law of the Lord.

Simeon’s Song of Thanks

²⁵ There was a man in Jerusalem by the name of Simeon. He was a good man and very religious. He was looking for the time when the Jewish nation would be saved. The Holy Spirit was on him. ²⁶ The Holy Spirit made it known to Simeon that he would not die before he had seen God’s Chosen One. ²⁷ He came to the house of God being led by the Holy Spirit. The parents took Jesus to the house of God. They came to do what the Law said must be done. ²⁸ Then Simeon took Jesus in his arms. He gave honor to Him and thanked God, saying,

²⁹ “Lord, now let me die in peace, as You have said. ³⁰ My eyes have seen the One Who will save men from the punishment of their sins. ³¹ You have made Him ready in the sight of all nations. ³² He will be a light to shine on the people who are not Jews. He will be the shining-greatness of Your people the Jews.” ³³ Joseph and the mother of Jesus were surprised and wondered about these words which were said about Jesus. ³⁴ Simeon honored them and said to Mary the mother of Jesus, “See! This Child will make many people fall and many people rise in the Jewish nation. He will be spoken against. ³⁵ A sword will cut through your soul. By this the thoughts of many hearts will be understood.”

Anna Gives Thanks for Jesus

³⁶ Anna was a woman who spoke God’s Word. She was the daughter of Phanuel of the family group of Asher. Anna was many years old. She had lived with her husband seven years after she was married. ³⁷ Her husband had died and she had lived without a husband eighty-four years. Yet she did not go away from the house of God. She served God day and night, praying and going without food so she could pray better. ³⁸ At that time she came and gave thanks to God. She told the people in Jerusalem about Jesus. They were looking for the One to save them from the punishment of their sins and to set them free.

They Return to Nazareth ^(B)

³⁹ When Joseph and Mary had done everything the Law said to do, they went back to Nazareth in Galilee. ⁴⁰ The Child grew and became strong in spirit. He was filled with wisdom and the loving-favor of God was on Him.

⁴¹ His parents went to Jerusalem every year for the special religious gathering to remember how the Jews left Egypt. ⁴² When He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem as they had done before. ⁴³ When the days of the special supper were over, they started back to their town. But the boy Jesus was still in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it. ⁴⁴ They thought Jesus was with the others of the group. They walked for one day. Then they looked for Him among their family and friends.

⁴⁵ When they could not find Jesus, they turned back to Jerusalem to look for Him. ⁴⁶ Three days later they found Him in the house of God. He was sitting among the teachers. He was hearing what they said and asking questions. ⁴⁷ All those who heard Him were surprised and wondered about His understanding and at what He said. ⁴⁸ When His parents saw Him, they were surprised. His mother said to Him, “My Son, why have You done this to us? See! Your father and I have had much sorrow looking for You.” ⁴⁹ He said to them, “Why were you looking for Me? Do you not know that I must be in My Father’s house?” ⁵⁰ They did not understand the things He said to them.

⁵¹ He went with them to Nazareth and obeyed them. But His mother kept all these words in her heart. ⁵² Jesus grew strong in mind and body. He grew in favor with God and men.
