M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
Amaziah Rules Judah
14 In the second year of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Joash’s son Amaziah began to rule as king of Judah. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king. And he ruled twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddin of Jerusalem. 3 Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not like David his father. He did all that his father Joash had done. 4 But the high places were not taken away. The people still gave gifts and burned special perfume on the high places. 5 As soon as the nation was under Amaziah’s power, he killed the servants who had killed his father when he was king. 6 But he did not kill the sons of the killers. Because it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, as the Lord said, “The fathers must not be put to death for the sons. And the sons must not be put to death for the fathers. Each must be put to death for his own sin.” 7 Amaziah killed 10,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt, and took Sela by war. He gave it the name Joktheel, which is its name to this day. 8 Then Amaziah sent men with news to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look at each other in the face.” 9 Jehoash king of Israel answered Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thorn bush in Lebanon sent word to the cedar tree in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ But a wild animal passed by in Lebanon, and crushed the thorn bush under its feet. 10 Yes, you have won the battle against Edom. Your heart has become proud. Be happy with your greatness and stay at home. For why should you make trouble so that you fall, and Judah with you?”
11 But Amaziah would not listen. So King Jehoash of Israel went up. He and Amaziah king of Judah fought each other at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 12 Israel won the battle against Judah, and every man of Judah ran away to his tent. 13 King Jehoash of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh. Then he came to Jerusalem and tore down the city wall, from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate. He tore down the wall as far as 200 long steps. 14 He took all the gold and silver and all the objects found in the house of the Lord and in the store-rooms of the king’s house. He took people against their will also, and he returned to Samaria.
15 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash, his strength and how he fought with King Amaziah of Judah are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. 16 Jehoash died and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam became king in his place.
The Death of Amaziah
17 Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 18 The rest of the acts of Amaziah are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah. 19 They made plans against Amaziah in Jerusalem, and he ran away to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20 Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers at Jerusalem the city of David. 21 The people of Judah took Azariah and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah. He was sixteen years old. 22 Azariah built Elath and returned it to Judah, after the king died.
Jeroboam II Rules Israel
23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, began to rule in Samaria and ruled forty-one years. 24 Jeroboam did what was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. He did not turn away from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel sin. 25 He took back the land of Israel from Hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, as was told by the word of the Lord, the God of Israel. The Lord spoke about this through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai. Jonah was the man from Gath-hepher who spoke for the Lord. 26 For the Lord saw that the trouble of Israel was very bitter. There was no one left of the servants or of those who were free. There was no one to help Israel. 27 The Lord did not say that He would destroy the name of Israel from under heaven. So He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.
28 Jeroboam fought Judah and took back Damascus and Hamath for Israel. The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, all he did and his strength are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. 29 Jeroboam was buried with his fathers, the kings of Israel. His son Zechariah became king in his place.
Paul’s Work Is Finished—Timothy Must Carry On
4 These words are from my heart to you. I say this before God and Jesus Christ. Some day He will judge those who are living and those who are dead. It will be when Christ comes to bring His holy nation. 2 Preach the Word of God. Preach it when it is easy and people want to listen and when it is hard and people do not want to listen. Preach it all the time. Use the Word of God to show people they are wrong. Use the Word of God to help them do right. You must be willing to wait for people to understand what you teach as you teach them.
3 The time will come when people will not listen to the truth. They will look for teachers who will tell them only what they want to hear. 4 They will not listen to the truth. Instead, they will listen to stories made up by men. 5 You must watch for all these things. Do not be afraid to suffer for our Lord. Preach the Good News from place to place. Do all the work you are to do.
6 It will soon be time for me to leave this life. 7 I have fought a good fight. I have finished the work I was to do. I have kept the faith. 8 There is a crown which comes from being right with God. The Lord, the One Who will judge, will give it to me on that great day when He comes again. I will not be the only one to receive a crown. All those who love to think of His coming and are looking for Him will receive one also.
Paul Sends Word to Timothy About Some Friends
9 Come to me here as soon as you can. 10 Demas left me. He loved the things of this world and has gone to the city of Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to the city of Galatia. Titus has gone to the city of Dalmatia. 11 Luke is the only one with me here. Bring Mark when you come. He is a help to me in this work. 12 I sent Tychicus to the city of Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the coat I left with Carpus in the city of Troas. Bring the books and for sure do not forget the writings written on sheepskin. 14 Alexander, the man who makes things out of copper, has worked hard against me. The Lord will give him the pay that is coming to him. 15 Watch him! He fought against every word we preached.
16 At my first trial no one helped me. Everyone left me. I hope this will not be held against them. 17 But the Lord was with me. He gave me power to preach the Good News so all the people who do not know God might hear. I was taken from the mouth of the lion. 18 The Lord will look after me and will keep me from every sinful plan they have. He will bring me safe into His holy nation of heaven. May He have all the shining-greatness forever. Let it be so.
19 Greet Priscilla and Aquila for me and to all the family of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus stayed in the city of Corinth. I left Trophimus sick in the city of Miletus. 21 Try to come before winter. Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the Christian brothers greet you. 22 May the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. May you have God’s loving-favor.
7 “Whenever I would heal Israel, I see the sin of Ephraim and the wrong-doing of Samaria. They are false in their ways. The robber breaks into houses, and sinful men rob in the streets. 2 They do not think about how I remember all the sinful things they do. Their sins are all around them, and are always before Me. 3 They make the king glad with their wrong-doing, and the leaders with their lies. 4 None of them are faithful. They are like a hot stove whose fire the bread-maker leaves alone from the time he makes the dough until the bread rises. 5 On the special day of our king the leaders became drunk with wine. He joined hands with those who laughed at the truth. 6 Their hearts are like a hot stove as they make their plans. Their anger smokes all night, and in the morning it burns like a hot fire. 7 All of them are hot like a stove, and they destroy their leaders. All their kings have fallen, and none of them calls to Me for help.
Israel Cannot Depend on the Nations
8 “Ephraim mixes with the nations. Ephraim is a cake not turned. 9 Strangers destroy his strength, yet he does not know it. White hairs come upon him, yet he does not know it. 10 Israel’s pride speaks against him, yet they do not return to the Lord their God. Even for all this, they do not look for Him. 11 Ephraim is like a foolish dove that is not able to think. They call to Egypt. They go to Assyria. 12 When they go, I will spread My net over them. I will bring them down like the birds of the sky. I will punish them for the sinful things they have done. 13 It is bad for them, for they have turned away from Me! They will be destroyed, for they would not obey Me! I would save them and make them free, but they speak lies against Me. 14 They do not cry out to Me from their heart when they cry on their beds. They come together for grain and new wine, but turn away from Me. 15 I taught them and gave strength to their arms, yet they make sinful plans against Me. 16 They do not turn to the Most High. They are like a bow that does not work right. Their leaders will be killed by the sword because of their proud words. And those in the land of Egypt will laugh at them.
A Prayer for Help
120 I cried to the Lord in my trouble, and He answered me. 2 O Lord, save me from lying lips and a false tongue. 3 What will be given to you and what more will be done to you, you false tongue? 4 He will punish you with sharp arrows of the soldier, and with the hot fire of the broom tree.
5 It is bad for me, for I travel in Meshech and live among the tents of Kedar! 6 I have lived too long with those who hate peace. 7 I am for peace. But when I speak, they are for war.
The Lord—Our Helper
121 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains. Where will my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your feet go out from under you. He Who watches over you will not sleep. 4 Listen, He Who watches over Israel will not close his eyes or sleep.
5 The Lord watches over you. The Lord is your safe cover at your right hand. 6 The sun will not hurt you during the day and the moon will not hurt you during the night. 7 The Lord will keep you from all that is sinful. He will watch over your soul. 8 The Lord will watch over your coming and going, now and forever.
A Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem
122 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” 2 Our feet are standing inside your gates, O Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built as a city where people come together. 4 That is where the different families go, the families of the Lord. There they give thanks to the name of the Lord, by the Law that was given to Israel. 5 For thrones were set there for telling who is guilty or not, the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May all go well for those who love you. 7 May there be peace within your walls. May all go well within your houses. 8 I will now say, “May peace be within you,” for the good of my brothers and my friends. 9 Because of the house of the Lord our God, I will pray for your good.
