2 Kings 6

The Ax Head That Was Not Lost

Now the sons of the men who tell what will happen in the future said to Elisha, “See, the place where we are living under your care is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan and each of us cut down a tree there. And let us make a place for us to live there.” So Elisha said, “Go.” Then one of them said, “Be pleased to go with your servants.” And Elisha answered, “I will go.” So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down trees. But as one of them was cutting a tree, the ax head fell into the water. The man cried out, “It is bad, sir! The ax belongs to another man, and I was to return it.” The man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And when he showed him the place, Elisha cut off a stick and threw it in, and the iron came to the top of the water. He said, “Pick it up.” So his servant put out his hand and took it.

Syrian Army Loses the Battle

Now the king of Syria was fighting a war against Israel. He had a meeting with his servants, and said, “This is the place where I will be staying.” The man of God sent news to the king of Israel, saying, “Be careful that you do not pass this place. For the Syrians are coming down there.” 10 The king of Israel sent men to the place where the man of God said there would be danger. So he saved himself there more than once or twice. 11 The heart of the king of Syria was angry because of this. He called his servants and said to them, “Will you show me which one of us is helping the king of Israel?” 12 And one of his servants said, “None, my lord, O king. Elisha, the man of God who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you say in your bedroom.” 13 So he said, “Go and see where Elisha is, that I may send men to take him.” And he was told, “See, he is in Dothan.” 14 So the king of Syria sent horses and war-wagons and an army of many soldiers there. They came during the night and gathered around the city.

15 The servant of the man of God got up early and went out. And he saw an army with horses and war-wagons around the city. The servant said to Elisha, “It is bad, sir! What should we do?” 16 He answered, “Do not be afraid. For those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, I pray, open his eyes, that he may see.” And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw. He saw that the mountain was full of horses and war-wagons of fire all around Elisha. 18 When the Syrians came against him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, saying, “Make these people blind, I pray.” So the Lord made them blind, as Elisha had said. 19 Then Elisha said to them, “This is not the way. This is not the city. Follow me and I will bring you to the man you are looking for.” And he brought them to Samaria.

20 When they had come to Samaria, Elisha said, “O Lord, open the eyes of these men. Let them see.” So the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw. They saw they were in the center of Samaria. 21 When the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, “My father, should I kill them? Should I kill them?” 22 He answered, “Do not kill them. Would you kill those you have taken against their will with your sword and bow? Give them bread and water. Let them eat and drink and return to their owner.” 23 So he made a big supper for them. When they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away. And they went to their owner. The Syrians sent no more small groups of soldiers into the land of Israel.

Samaria’s Trouble

24 After this, Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army and went up against Samaria. 25 There was a time of no food in Samaria. The Syrian army gathered around it, until a donkey’s head sold for eighty pieces of silver. A half cup of dove’s waste sold for five pieces of silver. 26 As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, “Help, my lord, O king!” 27 And he said, “If the Lord does not help you, from where can I help you? From the grain-floor, or from the grape-crusher?” 28 Then the king said to her, “What is your trouble?” And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, so we may eat him today. And we will eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 So we made my son ready to eat over the fire, and ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give your son, so we may eat him.’ But she has hidden her son.” 30 When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. He was passing by on the wall, and the people looked. They saw that he wore cloth made from hair under his clothes. 31 Then he said, “May God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat stays on him today.”

32 Now Elisha was sitting in his house. And the leaders were sitting with him. The king sent a man, but before the man came to him, Elisha said to the leaders, “Do you see how this son of a killer has sent to take off my head? See, when the king’s man comes, shut the door. Hold the door shut against him. Is not the sound of his owner’s feet behind him?” 33 While he was still talking with them, the king came down to him and said, “See, this trouble is from the Lord. Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”

1 Timothy 3

What a Church Leader Must Be Like

It is true that if a man wants to be a church leader, he wants to do a good work. A church leader must be a good man. His life must be so no one can say anything against him. He must have only one wife and must be respected for his good living. He must be willing to take people into his home. He must be willing to learn and able to teach the Word of God. He must not get drunk or want to fight. Instead, he must be gentle. He must not have a love for money. He should be a good leader in his own home. His children must obey and respect him. If a man cannot be a good leader in his own home, how can he lead the church? A church leader must not be a new Christian. A new Christian might become proud and fall into sin which is brought on by the devil. A church leader must be respected by people who are not Christians so nothing can be said against him. In that way, he will not be trapped by the devil.

What the Church Helpers Must Be Like

Church helpers must also be good men and act so people will respect them. They must speak the truth. They must not get drunk. They must not have a love for money. They must have their faith in Christ and be His follower with a heart that says they are right. 10 They must first be tested to see if they are ready for the work as church helpers. Then if they do well, they may be chosen as church helpers. 11 The wives of church helpers must be careful how they act. They must not carry stories from one person to another. They must be wise and faithful in all they do. 12 Church helpers must have only one wife. They must lead their home well and their children must obey them. 13 Those who work well as church helpers will be respected by others and their own faith in Christ Jesus will grow.

Why Paul Writes to Timothy

14 I hope to come to you soon. I am writing these things 15 because it may be awhile before I get there. I wanted you to know how you should act among people in the church which is the house of the living God. The church holds up the truth. 16 It is important to know the secret of God-like living, which is: Christ came to earth as a Man. He was pure in His Spirit. He was seen by angels. The nations heard about Him. Men everywhere put their trust in Him. He was taken up into heaven.

Daniel 10

Daniel’s Special Dream by the Tigris River

10 In the third year that Cyrus was the king of Persia, some news was made known to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). The news was true and it was about a battle. He received understanding of the news in a special dream.

In those days, I, Daniel, had been full of sorrow for three weeks. I did not eat any fine food, and no meat or wine came into my mouth. And I did not use any oil at all, until the three weeks were finished. On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, I was standing by the side of the wide Tigris River. I looked up and saw a certain man dressed in linen. Around him was a belt of fine gold. His body was like shining stone. His face looked like lightning. His eyes were like fire. His arms and feet were like shining brass. And his voice was like the noise of many people. I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the special dream. The men who were with me did not see it. But they were filled with much fear, and ran away to hide themselves. So I was left alone and saw this special dream. I had no strength left. My skin color turned white as if I were dead, and there was no strength left in me. Then I heard the sound of his words. And as soon as I heard him speak, I fell into a deep sleep with my face to the ground.

The Future for Persia and Greece

10 Then a hand touched me and I shook with fear on my hands and knees. 11 And he said to me, “O Daniel, you who are loved very much, understand what I am about to tell you, and stand up. For I have now been sent to you.” When he said this to me, I stood up shaking in fear. 12 Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind on understanding and getting rid of your pride before your God, your words were heard. And I have come because of your words. 13 But the ruler of Persia stood against me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the leading princes of honor, came to help me, because I had been left there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to help you understand what will happen to your people in the last days. For the special dream is about the days yet to come.” 15 When he had said this to me, I turned my face toward the ground and could not speak. 16 Then one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and spoke. I said to him who was standing in front of me, “O my lord, pain has come to me because of the special dream, and I have no strength left. 17 How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and no breath is left in me.”

18 Then the one who looked like a man touched me again and gave me strength. 19 He said, “O man who is loved very much, do not be afraid. May peace be with you. Be strong and have strength of heart.” And when he had spoken to me, I received strength, and said, “May my lord speak, for you have given me strength.” 20 He said, “Do you understand why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the ruler of Persia. And when I go, the ruler of Greece will come. 21 But first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one helps me against these rulers except Michael, your leading angel.

Psalm 119:1-24

The Law of the Lord

119 Happy are those whose way is without blame, who walk in the Law of the Lord. Happy are those who keep His Law and look for Him with all their heart. They also do not sin, but walk in His ways. You have set down Laws that we should always obey. O, that my ways may be always in keeping with Your Law! Then I will not be put to shame when I respect Your Word. I will praise You with a heart that is right when I learn how right You judge. I will obey Your Law. Do not leave me all alone.

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living by Your Word. 10 I have looked for You with all my heart. Do not let me turn from Your Law. 11 Your Word have I hid in my heart, that I may not sin against You. 12 Great and honored are You, O Lord. Teach me Your Law. 13 I have told with my lips of all the Laws of Your mouth. 14 I have found as much joy in following Your Law as one finds in much riches. 15 I will think about Your Law and have respect for Your ways. 16 I will be glad in Your Law. I will not forget Your Word.

17 Do good to Your servant so I may live and obey Your Word. 18 Open my eyes so that I may see great things from Your Law. 19 I am a stranger on the earth. Do not hide Your Word from me. 20 My soul is crushed with a desire for Your Law at all times. 21 You speak sharp words to the proud, the hated ones, because they turn from Your Word. 22 Take away shame and bad feelings from me, for I have kept Your Law. 23 Even if rulers sit together and speak against me, Your servant thinks about Your Law. 24 Your Law is my joy and it tells me what to do.
