1 Samuel 21-22

David at Nob

21 Then David came to Nob to Ahimelek the priest. And Ahimelek trembled coming to meet David and said to him, “Why are you alone and no man is with you?”

And David said to Ahimelek the priest, “The king commanded me a matter and said to me, ‘Let no man know anything of the business which I am sending you and what I have commanded you.’ But to the young men I made known a certain place to meet. Now therefore what is in your hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever can be found.”

The priest answered David and said, “There is no common bread at hand. But there is holy bread, if the young men have indeed been kept from women.”

David answered the priest and said to him, “Indeed women have been kept from us. As previously, when I went out the vessels of the young men were holy even if it was an ordinary journey. How much more then today will their vessels be holy?” So the priest gave him holy bread. For there was no bread there but the showbread that was removed from before the Lord, in order to place hot bread there on the day when it was taken away.

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. And his name was Doeg, the Edomite, chief of the shepherds of Saul.

David said to Ahimelek, “Is there not a spear or a sword here at hand? For neither my sword nor my weapons did I bring with me, because the king’s business was urgent.”

The priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, is here, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it. For there is none other but that here.”

And David said, “There is none like it. Give it me.”

David Flees to Gath

10 David arose and fled that day from Saul. And he went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 The servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing with dances for him, saying,

‘Saul has slain his thousands,
    and David his ten thousands’? ”

12 And David took these words to heart and greatly feared Achish the king of Gath. 13 Therefore he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands. And he scratched on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard.

14 Then said Achish to his servants, “You see the man is acting like a madman. Why then have you brought him to me? 15 Am I one who lacks lunatics, that you brought this one to behave as a madman in my presence? Will this man come into my house?”

David Protects His Parents

22 David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down to him there. There gathered to him every one that was in distress, and every one in debt, and every one that was discontented. So he became captain over them. Now there were with him about four hundred men.

Then David went from there to Mizpah of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come forth and be with you until I know what God will do for me.” He brought them before the king of Moab, and they lived with him all the while that David was in the stronghold.

The prophet Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold. Go to the land of Judah.” So David went and came to the forest of Hereth.

Saul Kills the Priests of Nob

When Saul heard that David and the men who were with him were discovered, Saul was sitting in Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the hill with his spear in his hand. And all his servants were standing about him. Saul said to his servants that stood about him, “Hear now, Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards? Will he appoint you all as captains of thousands and captains of hundreds? You have all conspired against me, and no one revealed to me that my son made a covenant with the son of Jesse. And not one of you is grieved for me and revealed it to me that my son raised up my servant against me to ambush me as at this day.”

Then Doeg the Edomite, who was chief over the servants of Saul, answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelek the son of Ahitub. 10 And he inquired of the Lord for him and gave him provisions. And he gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

11 So the king sent to summon Ahimelek the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob. And they all came to the king. 12 Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub!”

And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.”

13 Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you gave him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me to ambush me, as at this day?”

14 Then Ahimelek answered the king and said, “And who is as faithful among all your servants as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, chief of your bodyguard, and is honored in your house? 15 Did I just today begin to inquire of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king assign any blame to his servant, or to all the house of my father. For your servant has known nothing of all this matter, whether small or great.”

16 The king said, “You will surely die, Ahimelek, you and all your father’s house.”

17 The king said to the guards standing near him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand is with David. And because they knew that he was fleeing and did not reveal it to me.”

But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to attack the priests of the Lord.

18 The king said to Doeg, “You turn and fall upon the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests and killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword. Both men and women, children and babies, oxen, donkeys, and sheep, he struck with the edge of the sword.

David, Protector of the Priestly Line

20 But one of the sons of Ahimelek the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21 Abiathar reported to David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 David said to Abiathar, “I knew it that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have caused the death of all the persons of your father’s house. 23 Remain with me. Do not fear. For the one who seeks my life seeks your life, but you are safe with me.”

1 Corinthians 3

Fellow Servants of God

Brothers, I could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to worldly, even as to babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk and not with solid food. For to this day you were not able to endure it. Nor are you able now, for you are still worldly. Since there is envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not worldly and behaving as mere men? For while one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not worldly?

Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom you believed, even as the Lord gave to each one? I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither is he who plants nor he who waters anything, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are laborers together with God: You are God’s vineyard; you are God’s building.

10 According to the grace of God which has been given to me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, but another builds on it. Now let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay another foundation than that which was laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or stubble, 13 each one’s work will be revealed. For the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each has done. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on the foundation endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss. But he himself will be saved, still going through the fire.

16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy. And you are His temple.

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this world, let him become a fool that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness,”[a] 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.”[b] 21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come, all are yours, 23 and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

Ezekiel 1

The Vision of the Lord’s Glory

In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Kebar, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

On the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of the captivity of King Jehoiachin, the word of the Lord came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the River Kebar. And the hand of the Lord was on him there.

As I looked, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually, and a brightness was all around it, and in its midst something as glowing metal in the midst of the fire. Also out of the midst came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: They had the likeness of a man. Every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. Their legs were straight and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf’s hoof. And they gleamed like the color of burnished bronze. They had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, their wings were joined to one another. Their faces did not turn when they went. Each went straight forward.

10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man, and all four had the face of a lion on the right side, and the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle. 11 Thus were their faces. And their wings were stretched upward. Two wings of every one were joined to one another, and two covered their bodies. 12 Each went straight forward. Wherever the spirit was to go, they would go and not turn as they went. 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire and like the appearance of lamps. It went up and down among the living creatures. And the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. 14 The living creatures ran to and fro as the appearance of a flash of lightning.

15 Now as I looked at the living creatures, one wheel was on the ground by the living creatures for each of the four faces. 16 The appearance of the wheels and their work was like the color of sparkling beryl. And all four of them had one likeness. And their appearance and their work was, as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel. 17 Whenever they went, they went in any of their four sides and did not turn as they went. 18 As for their rims, they were so high that they were dreadful. And the rims of all four of them were full of eyes all around.

19 Whenever the living creatures went, the wheels went with them. And whenever the living creatures were lifted up from the ground, the wheels also were lifted up. 20 Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction. And the wheels rose close beside them. For the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 Whenever those went, these went. And whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the ground, the wheels rose close beside them. For the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

22 The likeness of the expanse over the heads of the living creatures was as the awesome gleam of crystal, stretched out over their heads above. 23 Under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, the one toward the other. Each one also had two wings which covered its body on the one side and the other. 24 When they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of abundant waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the noise of tumult as the noise of an army camp. Whenever they stood still, they let down their wings.

25 There was a voice from the expanse that was over their heads whenever they stood still and let down their wings. 26 Above the expanse that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone. And on the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man on it high up. 27 Then I saw as glowing metal, as the appearance of fire all around within it, from the appearance of His loins and upward; and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was a brightness around Him. 28 As the appearance of the rainbow that is in the cloud on a day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.

This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice of one speaking.

Psalm 37

Psalm 37

A Psalm of David.

Do not fret because of evildoers,
    nor be jealous of those who do injustice.
For they will quickly wither like the grass,
    and fade like the green herbs.

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land, and practice faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your judgment as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
    do not fret because of those who prosper in their way,
    because of those who make wicked schemes.

Let go of anger, and forsake wrath;
    do not fret—it surely leads to evil deeds.
For evildoers will be cut off,
    but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while, and the wicked will not be;
    you will look diligently for their place, and it will not be.
11 But the meek will inherit the earth,
    and will delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plot against the righteous,
    and grind their teeth against them.
13 The Lord will laugh at him,
    for He sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn out the sword
    and have bent their bow,
to cast down the poor and needy,
    and to slay those on the upright path.
15 Their sword will enter into their own heart,
    and their bows will be broken.

16 Better is a little that the righteous has
    than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked will be broken,
    but the Lord supports the righteous.

18 The Lord knows the days of people of integrity,
    and their inheritance will be forever.
19 They will not be ashamed in the evil time,
    and in the days of famine they will be satisfied.

20 But the wicked will perish,
    and the enemies of the Lord will be like the glory of pastures;
    they will waste away, in smoke they will waste away.

21 The wicked borrows and does not repay,
    but the righteous is gracious and gives.
22 For those who are blessed of Him will inherit the earth,
    but those who are cursed of Him will be cut off.

23 The steps of a man are made firm by the Lord;
    He delights in his way.
24 Though he falls, he will not be hurled down,
    for the Lord supports him with His hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old;
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
    nor their offspring begging bread.
26 The righteous are gracious and lend,
    and their offspring are a source of blessing.

27 Depart from evil and do good,
    and abide forevermore.
28 For the Lord loves justice,
    and does not forsake His saints;
they are preserved forever,
    but the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.
29 The righteous will inherit the land,
    and dwell on it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
    and their tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of their God is in their heart;
    none of their steps will slip.

32 The wicked watch the righteous,
    and seek to kill them.
33 The Lord will not forsake them to their hand,
    nor condemn them when they are judged.

34 Hope in the Lord,
    and keep His way,
and He will exalt you to inherit the land;
    when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power,
    and spreading himself like a luxuriant tree.
36 Yet he passed away, and he was not;
    I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless man, and consider the upright,
    for the end of that man is peace.
38 But the transgressors will be destroyed together;
    the end of the wicked is to be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    He is their refuge in the time of distress.
40 The Lord will help them and deliver them;
    He will deliver them from the wicked,
    and save them, because they take refuge in Him.
