Joshua 9

And when all the kings who were beyond Jordan, in the mountains and in the valleys, and by all the borders of the Great Sea, opposite Lebanon (the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites) heard of it,

they gathered themselves together to fight against Joshua and against Israel, with one accord.

But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai.

And therefore they worked craftily. They went, and pretended to be ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their donkeys, and old bottles for wine, both torn and mended,

and old spotted shoes upon their feet. Also the clothing upon them was old, and all their provision of bread was dried and molded.

So they came to Joshua, into the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now, therefore, make an alliance with us.”

Then the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “It may be that you dwell among us; how, then, can I make an alliance with you?”

And they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Then Joshua said to them, “Who are you? And from where have you come?”

And they answered him, “Your servants have come from a very far country for the Name of the LORD your God. For we have heard His fame and all that He has done in Egypt,

10 “and all that He has done to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond Jordan—to Sihon, king of Heshbon and to Og, king of Bashan— who were at Ashtaroth.

11 “Therefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, ‘Take provisions with you for the journey and go to meet them, and say to them, “We are your servants. Now, therefore, make an alliance with us.”’

12 “This, our bread, we took hot with us out of our houses for provisions the day we departed to come to you. But now, behold, it is dried and it is molded.

13 “Also, these bottles of wine which we filled were new. And lo, they are torn. And these our garments and our shoes are old by reason of the exceedingly great journey.”

14 And the men accepted their tale concerning their provisions and did not counsel with the mouth of the LORD.

15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made an alliance with them, and allowed them to live. Also, the princes of the Congregation swore to them.

16 But at the end of three days, after they had made an alliance with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and that they dwelt among them.

17 And the children of Israel took their journey, and came to their cities on the third day. And their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth and Kirjath Jearim.

18 And the children of Israel did not kill them, because the princes of the Congregation had sworn to them by the LORD God of Israel. Therefore, all the Congregation murmured against the princes.

19 Then, all the princes said to all the Congregation, “We have sworn to them by the LORD God of Israel. Now, therefore, we may not touch them.

20 “This we will do to them, and let them live, lest the Wrath be upon us because of the oath which we swore to them.”

21 And the princes said to them again, “Let them live. But they shall cut wood and draw water for all the Congregation, as the princes appoint them.”

22 Joshua then called them, and talked with them, and said, “Why have you tricked us, saying, ‘We are very far from you’, when you dwell among us?

23 “Now, therefore, you are accursed. And there shall be none of you freed from being bondmen, and woodcutters, and drawers of water for the House of my God.”

24 And they answered Joshua, and said, “Because it was told to your servants that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land not within your sight, therefore we were exceedingly very afraid for our lives at the presence of you, and have done this thing.

25 “And behold now, we are in your hand. Do as seems good and right in your eyes to do to us.”

26 And so he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they did not kill them.

27 And Joshua appointed them on that same day to be woodcutters and drawers of water for the Congregation and for the Altar of the LORD, until this day, in the place which he would choose.

Psalm 140-141

140 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man. Preserve me from the cruel man.

Who imagine evil things in their heart and make war continually.

They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent. Adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.

Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked. Preserve me from the cruel man, who intends to cause my steps to slide.

The proud have laid a snare for me, and spread a net with cords in my pathway, and set traps for me. Selah.

I said to the LORD, “You are my God. Hear, O LORD, the voice of my prayers.

“O LORD God, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head on the day of battle.

“Do not let the wicked have his desire, O LORD. Do not perform his wicked thought, lest they be proud. Selah.

“The chief of those who surround me, let the mischief of their own lips come upon them.

10 “Let coals fall upon them. Let him cast them into the fire, into the deep pits, so that they do not rise.

11 “The backbiter shall not be established upon the Earth. Evil shall hunt the cruel man to destruction.”

12 I know that the LORD will avenge the afflicted and judge the poor.

13 Surely, the righteous shall praise Your Name; and the just shall dwell in Your presence. A Psalm of David

141 O LORD, I call upon You! Hurry to me! Hear my voice when I cry to You!

Let my prayer be directed in Your sight as incense, the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice.

Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Do not incline my heart to evil, so that I would commit wicked works with those who work iniquity; and do not let me eat of their delicacies.

Let the righteous strike me; for that is a benefit. And let him reprove me; it shall be as a precious oil that shall not break my head. For after a while, I shall even pray in their miseries.

When their judges are cast down in stony places, they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.

Our bones lie scattered at the grave’s mouth, as he who hews or digs in the earth.

But my eyes look to You, O LORD God. In You is my trust. Do not leave my soul destitute.

Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me, and from the traps of the workers of iniquity.

10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I escape. A Psalm of David, to give instruction; and a prayer when he was in the cave

Jeremiah 3

“They say, ‘If a man puts away his wife, and she goes from him, and becomes another man’s, shall he return again to her? Shall not this land be polluted?’ But you have played the harlot, with many lovers, yet turn again to me,” says the LORD.

“Lift up your eyes to the high places, and behold where you have not played the harlot. You have sat, waiting for them on the way, as the Arabian in the wilderness. And you have polluted the land with your whoredoms, and with your malice.

“Therefore the showers have been restrained, and the latter rain came not, and you had a whore’s forehead. You would not be ashamed.

“Did you not still cry to Me, ‘You are My Father, the guide of my youth?

‘Will He keep His anger forever? Will He reserve it to the end?’ Thus have you spoken, but you still do evil, more and more.”

The LORD also said to me in the days of Josiah the king, “Have you seen what this rebel Israel has done? She has gone up upon every high mountain, and under every green tree, and there played the harlot.

“And I said, when she had done all this, ‘Turn to Me.’ But she did not return, as her rebellious sister Judah saw.

“Then I saw how that for all the occasions rebellious Israel had played the harlot, and I had cast her away and given her a bill of divorcement, yet her rebellious sister, Judah, was not afraid. And she also went and played the harlot.

“So that because of the lightness of her whoredom, she has even defiled the land. For she has committed fornication with stones and trees.

10 “Nevertheless, for all this, her rebellious sister Judah has not returned to Me with her whole heart, but deceptively,” says the LORD.

11 And the LORD said to me, “The rebellious Israel has justified herself more than the rebellious Judah.

12 “Go and cry these Words toward the North, and say, ‘You disobedient Israel, return,’ says the LORD, ‘and I will not let My wrath fall upon you.’ For I am merciful,” says the LORD, “and I will not always keep My anger.

13 “But know your iniquity. For you have rebelled against the LORD your God, and have scattered your ways to the strange gods under every green tree. But you would not obey My Voice,” says the LORD.

14 “O you disobedient children, turn again,” says the LORD, “for I am your LORD. And I will take you, one from a city, and two from a tribe, and will bring you to Zion.

15 “And I will give you pastors according to My Heart, who shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

16 “Moreover, when you are increased and multiplied in the land, in those days,” says the LORD, “they shall say no more: ‘The Ark of the Covenant of the LORD.’ For it shall not come to mind anymore, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it. For that shall not be done anymore.

17 “At that time, they shall call Jerusalem, ‘The Throne of the LORD.’ And all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the Name of the LORD in Jerusalem. And henceforth they shall not follow the hardness of their wicked heart anymore.

18 “In those days, the House of Judah shall walk with the House of Israel. And they shall come together out of the land of the North, into the land that I have given for an inheritance to your fathers.

19 “But I said, ‘How did I take you for children, and give you a pleasant land, the glorious heritage of the armies of the heathen?’ And I said, ‘You shall call Me, “My Father”, and shall not turn from Me.’

20 “But as a woman rebels against her husband, so have you rebelled against Me, O House of Israel,” says the LORD.

21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel. For they have perverted their way, forgotten the LORD their God.

22 “O you disobedient children! Return and I will heal your rebellions.” “Behold, we come to You! For You are the LORD our God.

23 “Truly the hope of the hills is but vain, and the multitude of mountains. But in the LORD our God is the health of Israel.

24 “For confusion has devoured our father’s labor from our youth, their sheep and their bullocks, their sons and their daughters.

25 “We lie down in our confusion, and our shame covers us. For we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers from our youth, even to this day. And we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.”

Matthew 17

17 And after six days, Jesus took Peter and James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain, alone.

And He was transfigured before them. And His face shined as the Sun. And His clothes were as white as the light.

And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him.

Then Peter answered, and said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. If You would, let us make three booths here; one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

“While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.”

And when the disciples heard that, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.

Then Jesus came and touched them, and said, “Arise. And do not be afraid.”

And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, “Tell no one of this vision until the Son of Man has risen again from the dead.”

10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

11 And Jesus answered, and said to them, “Certainly Elijah must come first, and restore all things.

12 “But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him. But they have done to him whatever they would. Likewise, the Son of Man shall also suffer by them.”

13 Then the disciples perceived that He spoke to them of John Baptist.

14 And when they had come to the multitude, a certain man came to Him and fell down at His feet,

15 and said, “Master, have pity on my son. For he is lunatic and suffers greatly. For he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.

16 “And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him.”

17 Then Jesus answered, and said, “O faithless and crooked generation. How long now shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.”

18 And Jesus rebuked the demon. And he went out of him. And the child was healed at that hour.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, “Why could not we cast it out?”

20 And Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as much as is a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it shall move. And nothing shall be impossible to you.

21 “Nevertheless, this kind only comes out by prayer and fasting.”

22 And while they were in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

23 “And they shall kill Him. But the third day He shall rise again.” And they were very sorrowful.

24 And when they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter, and said, “Does not your Master pay temple taxes?

25 He said, “Yes.” And when he had come into the house, Jesus stopped him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the Earth take tribute (or temple taxes) - from their children, or from strangers?

26 Peter said to Him, “From strangers.” Then Jesus said to him, “Then the children are free.”

27 Nevertheless, so that we should not offend them, go to the sea and cast in a hook. And take the first fish that comes up. And when you have opened its mouth, you shall find a coin. Take it, and give it to them for you and Me.
