M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
9 The kings west of the Jordan, in the hill country and the valleys and beside the Great Sea toward Lebanon all heard what had happened. These kings were of the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 2 They gathered together as one to fight against Joshua and Israel. 3 The people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai. 4 So they went out to fool him, as men from another land. They took old bags on their donkeys, and skin bags of wine that were old and torn and mended. 5 They wore old and mended shoes on their feet, and old clothes on themselves. All their bread was dry and broken. 6 They went to Joshua among the tents at Gilgal. And they said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a far country. Now make an agreement with us.” 7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “It may be that you are living within our land. How then can we make an agreement with you?” 8 But they said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Then Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where do you come from?” 9 They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of the Lord your God. For we have heard about Him and all He did in Egypt. 10 We heard what He did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan who was at Ashtaroth. 11 So our leaders and all the people of our country said to us, ‘Take what you need for traveling. Go to meet them and tell them, “We are your servants. Now make an agreement with us.’” 12 Our bread was warm when we took it along with what we needed from our houses on the day we left to come to you. But now look, it is dry and broken. 13 These skin bags that we filled with wine were new. Now look, they are torn. And our clothes and shoes have become old because of the very long way we had to travel.” 14 So the men of Israel took some of their food. They did not ask the Lord what they should do. 15 Joshua made peace with them and made an agreement with them, to let them live. And the leaders of the people made a promise to them.
16 But three days after they had made an agreement with them, they heard that they were neighbors who lived in their land. 17 Then the people of Israel left that place and came to their cities on the third day. Their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim. 18 But the people of Israel did not kill them because the leaders of the people had made a promise to them by the Lord the God of Israel. All the people complained against the leaders. 19 Then all the leaders said to all the people, “We have made a promise to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Now we cannot touch them. 20 This is what we will do to them. We will let them live, or anger would be upon us for the promise we swore to them.” 21 And the leaders said to them, “Let them live.” So they cut wood and brought water for all the people, as the leaders had told them.
22 Joshua called them and said, “Why have you lied to us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you are living within our land? 23 Now you are cursed. You will never stop being servants, cutting wood and bringing water, for the house of my God.” 24 They answered Joshua, “Because it was told to your servants that the Lord your God had told His servant Moses to give you all the land and kill all the people of the land in front of you. We were very much afraid for our lives because of you. That is why we have done this thing. 25 Now see, we are in your hands. Do to us whatever you think is good and right in your eyes.” 26 So he did this to them. He saved them from the hands of the people of Israel. They did not kill them. 27 But on that day Joshua made them cut wood and bring water for the people of Israel and for the altar of the Lord, at whatever place He chooses. That was to be their work to this day.
A Prayer for Help
140 O Lord, take me away from sinful men. Keep me safe from men who want to hurt others. 2 They make sinful plans in their hearts. They always start wars. 3 They make their tongues sharp like a snake’s. And the poison of a snake is under their lips.
4 O Lord, keep me from the hands of the sinful. Keep me safe from men who want to hurt others and have planned to trip my feet. 5 The proud have hidden a trap for me. With ropes they have spread a net. They have set traps for me beside the road. 6 I said to the Lord, “You are my God. Listen to the voice of my prayers, O Lord. 7 O God the Lord, the strength that saves me, You have covered my head in the day of battle. 8 O Lord, do not give the sinful what they want. Do not let their plans work, or they will be honored.
9 “As for those who gather around me, may the wrong-doing of their lips come upon their heads. 10 May burning coals fall upon them. May they be thrown into the fire, into deep holes, and rise no more. 11 Do not let the man whose talking hurts people stand in the land. May trouble hurry to catch and destroy the man who wants to hurt others.”
12 I know that the Lord will stand by those who suffer and do what is right for the poor. 13 For sure those who are right and good will give thanks to Your name. Those who are right will live with You.
An Evening Prayer
141 I call upon You, O Lord. Hurry to me! Hear my voice when I call to You! 2 May my prayer be like special perfume before You. May the lifting up of my hands be like the evening gift given on the altar in worship. 3 O Lord, put a watch over my mouth. Keep watch over the door of my lips. 4 Do not let my heart turn to any sinful thing, to do wrong with men who sin. And do not let me eat their fine food.
5 Let those who are right with God punish me and speak strong words to me in kindness. It is oil upon my head. Do not let my head turn away from it. Yet my prayer is always against the sinful works of those who sin. 6 When their rulers are thrown down from high rocks, they will hear my words, for they are true. 7 Our bones have been spread around the mouth of the grave like the broken ground behind the plow.
8 For my eyes are toward You, O God the Lord. In You I have a safe place. Do not leave me without help. 9 Keep me from the trap they have set for me. Keep me from the nets of those who do wrong. 10 Let the sinful fall into their own nets, while I pass by and am safe.
Israel Is Not Faithful
3 God says, “If a husband divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be made unclean? But you are like a sinful woman with many lovers, yet would you return to Me?” says the Lord. 2 “Lift up your eyes to the open hill-tops and see. Is there any place you have not lain with your lovers? You have sat by the roads waiting for them like an Arab in the desert. And you have made the land unclean with your sinful ways and your wrong-doing. 3 So the rains have been held back. There has been no spring rain. You look like a woman who sells the use of her body, and would not be ashamed. 4 Have you not just now called to Me? You said, ‘My Father, You have been my friend since I was young. 5 Will You be angry forever? Will You be angry to the end?’ See, this is how you talk, but you do all the sinful things you can.”
Israel and Judah Must Turn Away from Their Sins
6 The Lord said to me in the days of King Josiah, “Have you seen what Israel did, and what little faith she has? She went up on every high hill and under every green tree, like one who sells the use of her body. 7 And I thought, ‘After she has done all these things, she will return to Me.’ But she did not return, and her sister Judah, who has not been faithful, saw it. 8 She saw that for all of Israel’s sins and how she had not been faithful, I had sent her away and given her a paper of divorce. Yet her sister Judah had no fear, but she went and sold the use of her body also. 9 And because this sin was so easy for her, she sinned by worshiping stones and trees. 10 Even with all this, her sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but in a false way,” says the Lord.
11 And the Lord said to me, “Israel, who has not been faithful, has shown herself more right and good than Judah who could not be trusted. 12 Go and make these words known to the north, saying, ‘Return, Israel, who has not been faithful,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not look on you in anger. For I show loving-kindness,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not be angry forever. 13 Only know and tell of your guilt, that you have sinned against the Lord your God and have given your favors to the strangers under every green tree. Know that you have not obeyed My voice,’ says the Lord. 14 ‘Return, O sons who are not faithful,’ says the Lord. ‘For you belong to Me. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.’ 15 Then I will give you shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you with much learning and understanding. 16 And in those days when you have become many in the land,” says the Lord, “they will no more say, ‘The special box with the Law of the Lord.’ It will not come to mind, and they will not remember it. They will not miss it, and it will not be made again. 17 At that time they will call Jerusalem ‘The throne of the Lord.’ And all the nations will gather in Jerusalem to honor the name of the Lord. They will not follow the strong-will of their sinful heart any more. 18 In those days the people of Judah will walk with the people of Israel. They will come together from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers as a gift.
God’s People Worship False Gods
19 “Then I said, ‘How I would like to make you My sons and give you a pleasing land, the most beautiful land of the nations!’ And I said, ‘You will call Me, “My Father,” and not turn away from following Me.’ 20 For sure, as a woman is not faithful and leaves her husband, so you have not been faithful to Me, O people of Israel,” says the Lord.
21 A voice is heard on the open hill-tops, the cries and prayers of the sons of Israel, because they have made their way sinful. They have forgotten the Lord their God. 22 “Return, O sons who are not faithful. I will heal you and make you faithful.” “See, we come to You, for You are the Lord our God. 23 For sure the hills are a false hope, a noise on the mountains. In truth, the saving of Israel is in the Lord our God. 24 But false gods have brought us shame and have destroyed what our fathers worked for since we were young, their flocks and cattle, their sons and their daughters. 25 Let us lie down in our shame, and let our shame cover us. For we and our fathers have sinned against the Lord our God ever since we were young. We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”
A Look at What Jesus Will Be Like (A)
17 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and his brother John. He led them up to a high mountain by themselves. 2 He was changed in looks before them. His face was as bright as the sun. His clothes looked as white as light. 3 Moses and Elijah were seen talking with Jesus. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You will let us, we will build three altars here. One will be for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
5 While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud came over them. A voice from the cloud said, “This is My much-loved Son, I am very happy with Him. Listen to Him!” 6 When the followers heard this, they got down on the ground on their faces and were very much afraid. 7 Jesus came and put His hand on them. He said, “Get up! Do not be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one there but Jesus only. 9 As they came down from the mountain, Jesus told them in strong words, saying, “Do not tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
The Followers Ask about Elijah
10 The followers asked Jesus, “Then why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah must come first?” 11 He said, “For sure, Elijah will come first and get things ready. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come and they did not know him. They did to him whatever they wanted to do. In the same way the Son of Man will suffer from them also.” 13 Then the followers understood He was talking about John the Baptist.
A Boy with a Demon Is Healed (B)
14 When they came to many people, a man came up to Jesus and got on his knees. He said, 15 “Lord, have pity on my son. He is very sick and at times loses the use of his mind. Many times he falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I took him to Your followers but they were not able to heal him.”
17 Then Jesus said, “You people of this day have no faith and you are going the wrong way. How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 Jesus spoke sharp words to the demon and the demon came out of him. At once the boy was healed.
19 The followers came to Jesus when He was alone. They said, “Why were we not able to put the demon out?” 20 Jesus said to them, “Because you have so little faith. For sure, I tell you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to over there,’ and it would move over. You will be able to do anything. 21 *But this kind of demon does not go out but by prayer and by going without food so you can pray better.”
Jesus Tells of His Death the Second Time (C)
22 While they were still in Galilee, Jesus said to the followers, “The Son of Man will be handed over to men. 23 They will kill Him, but He will be raised from the dead three days later.” The followers were very sad.
24 They came to the city of Capernaum. Those who gathered the tax for the house of God came to Peter. They said, “Does not your Teacher pay tax money for the house of God?” 25 Peter said, “Yes.” When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first. He said, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of this earth get their money or taxes, from their own people or from those of another country?” 26 Peter said to Him, “From those of another country.” Then Jesus said, “Then their own people do not pay taxes. 27 But so we will not make them to be troubled, go down to the lake and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up. In its mouth you will find a piece of money. Take that and pay the tax for Me and yourself.”
