Joshua 18-19

Rest of the Land Divided

18 Then the whole congregation of the sons of Israel assembled themselves at (A)Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there; and the land was subdued before them.

There remained among the sons of Israel seven tribes who had not divided their inheritance. So Joshua said to the sons of Israel, “(B)How long will you put off entering to take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you? Provide for yourselves three men from [a]each tribe that I may send them, and that they may arise and walk through the land and write a description of it according to their inheritance; then they shall [b]return to me. They shall divide it into seven portions; (C)Judah shall stay in its territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall stay in their territory on the north. You shall describe the land in seven divisions, and bring the description here to me. (D)I will cast lots for you here before the Lord our God. For (E)the Levites have no portion among you, because the priesthood of the Lord is [c]their inheritance. Gad and Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh also have received their inheritance eastward beyond the Jordan, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave them.”

Then the men arose and went, and Joshua commanded those who went to describe the land, saying, “Go and walk through the land and describe it, and return to me; then I will cast lots for you here before the Lord in (F)Shiloh.” So the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities in seven divisions in a book; and they came to Joshua to the camp at Shiloh. 10 And (G)Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord, and there Joshua divided the land to the sons of Israel according to their divisions.

The Territory of Benjamin

11 Now the lot of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin came up according to their families, and the territory of their lot [d]lay between the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph. 12 (H)Their border on the north side was from the Jordan, then the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north, and went up through the hill country westward, and [e]it ended at the wilderness of Beth-aven. 13 From there the border continued to (I)Luz, to the side of Luz (that is, Bethel) southward; and the border went down to Ataroth-addar, near the hill which lies on the south of (J)lower Beth-horon. 14 The border extended from there and turned round on the west side southward, from the hill which lies before Beth-horon southward; and [f]it ended at Kiriath-baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the west side. 15 Then the (K)south side was from the edge of Kiriath-jearim, and the border went westward and went to the fountain of the waters of Nephtoah. 16 The border went down to the edge of the hill which is in the (L)valley of Ben-hinnom, which is in the valley of Rephaim northward; and it went down to the valley of Hinnom, to the slope of the Jebusite southward, and went down to En-rogel. 17 It extended northward and went to En-shemesh and went to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, and it went down to the (M)stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. 18 It continued to the side in front of the Arabah northward and went down to the Arabah. 19 The border continued to the side of Beth-hoglah northward; and the [g]border ended at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of the Jordan. This was the south border. 20 Moreover, the Jordan was its border on the east side. This was the inheritance of the sons of Benjamin, according to their families and according to its borders all around.

21 Now the cities of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho and Beth-hoglah and Emek-keziz, 22 and Beth-arabah and Zemaraim and Bethel, 23 and Avvim and Parah and Ophrah, 24 and Chephar-ammoni and Ophni and (N)Geba; twelve cities with their villages. 25 Gibeon and Ramah and Beeroth, 26 and Mizpeh and Chephirah and Mozah, 27 and Rekem and Irpeel and Taralah, 28 and (O)Zelah, Haeleph and the Jebusite (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah, Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the (P)sons of Benjamin according to their families.

Territory of Simeon

19 Then the second lot [h]fell to Simeon, to the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families, and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the sons of Judah. So they had as their inheritance Beersheba or [i]Sheba and Moladah, and Hazar-shual and Balah and Ezem, and Eltolad and Bethul and Hormah, and Ziklag and Beth-marcaboth and Hazar-susah, and Beth-lebaoth and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages; Ain, Rimmon and Ether and Ashan; four cities with their villages; and all the villages which were around these cities as far as Baalath-beer, Ramah of the [j]Negev. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families. The inheritance of the sons of Simeon was taken from the portion of the sons of Judah, for the share of the sons of Judah was too large for them; so the sons of Simeon received an inheritance in the midst of [k]Judah’s inheritance.

Territory of Zebulun

10 Now the third lot came up for the sons of Zebulun according to their families. And the territory of their inheritance was as far as Sarid. 11 Then their border went up to the west and to Maralah, it then [l]touched Dabbesheth and reached to the [m]brook that is before Jokneam. 12 Then it turned from Sarid to the east toward the sunrise as far as the border of Chisloth-tabor, and it proceeded to Daberath and [n]up to Japhia. 13 From there it continued eastward toward the sunrise to Gath-hepher, to Eth-kazin, and it proceeded to Rimmon [o]which stretches to Neah. 14 The border circled around it on the north to Hannathon, and [p]it ended at the valley of Iphtahel. 15 Included also were Kattah and Nahalal and Shimron and Idalah and Bethlehem; twelve cities with their villages. 16 This was the inheritance of the sons of Zebulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Territory of Issachar

17 The fourth lot [q]fell to Issachar, to the sons of Issachar according to their families. 18 Their territory was to Jezreel and included Chesulloth and (Q)Shunem, 19 and Hapharaim and Shion and Anaharath, 20 and Rabbith and Kishion and Ebez, 21 and Remeth and En-gannim and En-haddah and Beth-pazzez. 22 The border reached to (R)Tabor and Shahazumah and Beth-shemesh, and [r]their border ended at the Jordan; sixteen cities with their villages. 23 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Issachar according to their families, the cities with their villages.

Territory of Asher

24 Now the fifth lot [s]fell to the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families. 25 Their territory was Helkath and Hali and Beten and Achshaph, 26 and Allammelech and Amad and Mishal; and it reached to Carmel on the west and to Shihor-libnath. 27 It turned toward the [t]east to Beth-dagon and reached to Zebulun, and to the valley of Iphtahel northward to Beth-emek and Neiel; then it proceeded on [u]north to (S)Cabul, 28 and Ebron and Rehob and Hammon and Kanah, as far as Great (T)Sidon. 29 The border turned to Ramah and to the fortified city of Tyre; then the border turned to Hosah, and [v]it ended at the sea by the region of (U)Achzib. 30 Included also were Ummah, and Aphek and Rehob; twenty-two cities with their villages. 31 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

Territory of Naphtali

32 The sixth lot [w]fell to the sons of Naphtali; to the sons of Naphtali according to their families. 33 Their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim and Adami-nekeb and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum, and [x]it ended at the Jordan. 34 Then the border turned westward to Aznoth-tabor and proceeded from there to Hukkok; and it reached to Zebulun on the south and [y]touched Asher on the west, and to Judah at the Jordan toward the [z]east. 35 The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer and (V)Hammath, Rakkath and (W)Chinnereth, 36 and Adamah and Ramah and Hazor, 37 and Kedesh and Edrei and En-hazor, 38 and Yiron and Migdal-el, Horem and Beth-anath and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages. 39 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali according to their families, the cities with their villages.

Territory of Dan

40 The seventh lot [aa]fell to the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families. 41 The territory of their inheritance was Zorah and Eshtaol and Ir-shemesh, 42 and Shaalabbin and Aijalon and Ithlah, 43 and Elon and Timnah and Ekron, 44 and Eltekeh and Gibbethon and Baalath, 45 and Jehud and Bene-berak and Gath-rimmon, 46 and Me-jarkon and Rakkon, with the territory over against [ab]Joppa. 47 The territory of the (X)sons of Dan proceeded [ac]beyond them; for the sons of Dan went up and fought with Leshem and captured it. Then they struck it with the edge of the sword and possessed it and [ad]settled in it; and they called [ae](Y)Leshem Dan after the name of Dan their father. 48 This was the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

49 When they finished apportioning the land for inheritance by its borders, the sons of Israel gave an inheritance in their midst to Joshua the son of Nun. 50 In accordance with the [af]command of the Lord they gave him the city for which he asked, (Z)Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim. So he built the city and [ag]settled in it.

51 (AA)These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the [ah]households of the tribes of the sons of Israel distributed by lot in Shiloh before the Lord at the doorway of the tent of meeting. So they finished dividing the land.

Psalm 149-150

Israel Invoked to Praise the Lord.

149 [a]Praise [b]the Lord!
Sing to the Lord a (A)new song,
And His praise (B)in the congregation of the godly ones.
Let Israel be glad in (C)his Maker;
Let the sons of Zion rejoice in their (D)King.
Let them praise His name with (E)dancing;
Let them sing praises to Him with (F)timbrel and lyre.
For the Lord (G)takes pleasure in His people;
He will (H)beautify the afflicted ones with salvation.

Let the (I)godly ones exult in glory;
Let them (J)sing for joy on their beds.
Let the (K)high praises of God be in their [c]mouth,
And a (L)two-edged (M)sword in their hand,
To (N)execute vengeance on the nations
And punishment on the peoples,
To bind their kings (O)with chains
And their (P)nobles with fetters of iron,
To (Q)execute on them the judgment written;
This is an (R)honor for all His godly ones.
[d]Praise [e]the Lord!

A Psalm of Praise.

150 [f]Praise [g]the Lord!
Praise God in His (S)sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty [h](T)expanse.
Praise Him for His (U)mighty deeds;
Praise Him according to His excellent (V)greatness.

Praise Him with (W)trumpet sound;
Praise Him with (X)harp and lyre.
Praise Him with (Y)timbrel and dancing;
Praise Him with (Z)stringed instruments and (AA)pipe.
Praise Him with loud (AB)cymbals;
Praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Let (AC)everything that has breath praise [i]the Lord.
[j]Praise [k]the Lord!

Jeremiah 9

A Lament over Zion

[a](A)Oh that my head were waters
And my eyes a fountain of tears,
That I might weep day and night
For the slain of the (B)daughter of my people!
[b](C)Oh that I had in the desert
A wayfarers’ lodging place;
That I might leave my people
And go from them!
For all of them are (D)adulterers,
An assembly of (E)treacherous men.
“They (F)bend their tongue like their bow;
Lies and not truth prevail in the land;
For they (G)proceed from evil to evil,
And they (H)do not know Me,” declares the Lord.
“Let everyone (I)be on guard against his neighbor,
And (J)do not trust any brother;
Because every (K)brother deals [c]craftily,
And every neighbor (L)goes about as a slanderer.
“Everyone (M)deceives his neighbor
And does not speak the truth,
They have taught their tongue to speak lies;
They (N)weary themselves committing iniquity.
“Your (O)dwelling is in the midst of deceit;
Through deceit they (P)refuse to know Me,” declares the Lord.

Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts,

“Behold, I will refine them and (Q)assay them;
For (R)what else can I do, because of the daughter of My people?
“Their (S)tongue is a deadly arrow;
It speaks deceit;
With his mouth one (T)speaks peace to his neighbor,
But inwardly he (U)sets an ambush for him.
(V)Shall I not punish them for these things?” declares the Lord.
“On a nation such as this
Shall I not avenge Myself?

10 “For the (W)mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing,
And for the pastures of the (X)wilderness a dirge,
Because they are (Y)laid waste so that no one passes through,
And the lowing of the cattle is not heard;
Both the (Z)birds of the sky and the beasts have fled; they are gone.
11 “I will make Jerusalem a (AA)heap of ruins,
A haunt of (AB)jackals;
And I will make the cities of Judah a (AC)desolation, without inhabitant.”

12 Who is the (AD)wise man that may understand this? And who is he to whom (AE)the mouth of the Lord has spoken, that he may declare it? (AF)Why is the land ruined, laid waste like a desert, so that no one passes through? 13 The Lord said, “Because they have (AG)forsaken My law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice nor walked according to it, 14 but have (AH)walked after the stubbornness of their heart and after the (AI)Baals, as their (AJ)fathers taught them,” 15 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “behold, (AK)I will feed them, this people, with wormwood and give them (AL)poisoned water to drink. 16 I will (AM)scatter them among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the (AN)sword after them until I have annihilated them.”

17 Thus says the Lord of hosts,

“Consider and call for the (AO)mourning women, that they may come;
And send for the [d](AP)wailing women, that they may come!
18 “Let them make haste and take up a wailing for us,
That our (AQ)eyes may shed tears
And our eyelids flow with water.
19 “For a voice of (AR)wailing is heard from Zion,
(AS)How are we ruined!
We are put to great shame,
For we have (AT)left the land,
Because they have cast down our dwellings.’”
20 Now hear the word of the Lord, O you (AU)women,
And let your ear receive the word of His mouth;
Teach your daughters wailing,
And everyone her neighbor a dirge.
21 For (AV)death has come up through our windows;
It has entered our palaces
To cut off the (AW)children from the streets,
The young men from the town squares.
22 Speak, “Thus says the Lord,
‘The corpses of men will fall (AX)like dung on the open field,
And like the sheaf after the reaper,
But no one will gather them.’”

23 Thus says the Lord, “(AY)Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the (AZ)mighty man boast of his might, let not a (BA)rich man boast of his riches; 24 but let him who boasts (BB)boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who (BC)exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I (BD)delight in these things,” declares the Lord.

25 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet (BE)uncircumcised— 26 Egypt and Judah, and Edom and the sons of Ammon, and Moab and (BF)all those inhabiting the desert who clip the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are (BG)uncircumcised of heart.”

Matthew 23

Pharisaism Exposed

23 (A)Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: (B)The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. (C)They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger. But they do all their deeds (D)to be noticed by men; for they (E)broaden their [a]phylacteries and lengthen (F)the tassels of their garments. They (G)love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called (H)Rabbi by men. But (I)do not be called (J)Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for (K)One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 Do not be called [b]leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. 11 (L)But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (M)Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Eight Woes

13 (N)But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, (O)because you shut off the kingdom of heaven [c]from [d]people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 14 [[e]Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because (P)you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.]

15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one [f](Q)proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of [g](R)hell as yourselves.

16 “Woe to you, (S)blind guides, who say, ‘(T)Whoever swears by the [h]temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the [i]temple is obligated.’ 17 You fools and blind men! (U)Which is [j]more important, the gold or the [k]temple that sanctified the gold? 18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the [l]offering on it, he is obligated.’ 19 You blind men, (V)which is [m]more important, the [n]offering, or the altar that sanctifies the [o]offering? 20 Therefore, [p]whoever swears by the altar, swears both by [q]the altar and by everything on it. 21 And [r]whoever swears by the [s]temple, swears both by [t]the temple and by Him who (W)dwells within it. 22 And [u]whoever swears by heaven, (X)swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

23 (Y)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and [v]cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 24 You (Z)blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (AA)you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full [w]of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee, first (AB)clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

27 (AC)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 (AD)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves, that you (AE)are [x]sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers. 33 You serpents, (AF)you brood of vipers, how [y]will you escape the [z]sentence of [aa](AG)hell?

34 (AH)Therefore, behold, (AI)I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will (AJ)scourge in your synagogues, and (AK)persecute from city to city, 35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous (AL)Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the (AM)son of Berechiah, whom (AN)you murdered between the [ab]temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon (AO)this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 (AP)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who (AQ)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (AR)the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. 38 Behold, (AS)your house is being left to you desolate! 39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘(AT)Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
