Leviticus 9

The Inauguration of the Sacrifices

On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a whole burnt offering, both without blemish, and present them before the Lord. Then speak to the Israelites and say, ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering. Also take a calf and a lamb, both a year old and without blemish, for a burnt offering. As a fellowship offering take one of the cattle[a] and a ram to be sacrificed before the Lord, and take a grain offering mixed with oil, for today the Lord will appear to you.’”

They took what Moses had commanded to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. Then the whole congregation approached and stood before the Lord. Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the Glory of the Lord may appear to you.” Then Moses said to Aaron, “Approach the altar and present your sin offering and your burnt offering. Make atonement for yourself and for the people. Then present the offering for the people. Make atonement for them, just as the Lord has commanded.”

Aaron approached the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. Then Aaron’s sons presented the blood to him. After he had dipped his finger in the blood, he put it on the horns of the altar, and he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 10 Then he turned the fat, the kidneys, and the protruding lobe of the liver from the sin offering into smoke upon the altar, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 11 But the meat and the hide were burned with fire outside the camp.

12 After he slaughtered the burnt offering, Aaron’s sons brought the blood to him, and he splashed it against all sides of the altar. 13 They brought the whole burnt offering to him, piece by piece, including the head, and he turned them into smoke on the altar. 14 He washed the inner organs and the legs and turned them into smoke on top of the whole burnt offering that was on the altar.

15 Then he presented the offering for the people. He took the male goat for the sin offering for the people, slaughtered it, and made a sin offering with it as he had done with the first one for himself. 16 He then presented the whole burnt offering and carried out the offering according to the regulations. 17 Next he presented the grain offering. Taking a handful of it, he sent it up in smoke on the altar, in addition to the morning burnt offering. 18 When he had slaughtered the offering of one of the cattle and of the ram as the people’s sacrifice for fellowship offerings, Aaron’s sons brought the blood to him, which he splashed against all sides of the altar, 19 and the fat pieces from the offering of the ox and the ram—the broad tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys, and the protruding lobe of the liver. 20 They laid the fat pieces on the breasts, and he turned the fat pieces into smoke on the altar.

21 Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh as a wave offering before the Lord, just as Moses had commanded. 22 Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them. After he had presented the sin offering, the whole burnt offering, and the fellowship offerings, he came down from the altar. 23 Then Moses and Aaron entered the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people, and the Glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 Fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat pieces on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell on their faces.

Psalm 10

Psalm 10

Break the Arm of the Wicked Man

An Opening Appeal for Action

Why, Lord, do you stand so far away?
Why do you hide in times of distress?

A Portrait of the Wicked

Because of the pride of the wicked, the oppressed burn.[a]
They are caught in the schemes that the wicked plan.
Yes, the wicked man boasts about his heart’s desires.
He blesses the robber. He despises the Lord.[b]
With his nose in the air, the wicked does not seek God.
There is no room at all for God in his thoughts.
His ways are prosperous all the time.
He is haughty. Your judgments do not concern him.
He snorts at all of his foes.
He says in his heart, “I will not be shaken.
Through age after age I will have no trouble.”
Cursing fills his mouth, along with lies and threats.
Trouble and evil lie under his tongue.
He waits in ambush by the villages.
In hidden places he murders the innocent.
His eyes are spying on the helpless.
He lies in ambush. He hides like a lion in a thicket.
He lies in ambush to catch the oppressed.
He catches the oppressed by dragging them in his net.
10 The helpless are crushed. They sink down.
They fall under his strength.
11 He says in his heart, “God has forgotten.
He hides his face. He never sees.”

An Appeal for Divine Justice

12 Rise up, O Lord! Lift up your hand, O God.
Do not forget the oppressed.
13 Why does the wicked man despise God?
Why does he say in his heart,
“You do not seek justice”?
14 But you do see. You notice trouble and grief.
You take it into your own hands.
The helpless one abandons himself to you.
For the fatherless you are indeed a helper.
15 Break the arm of the wicked.
You pursue the wickedness of the evil man
    until you find no more.[c]

Confidence in Divine Justice

16 The Lord is King forever and ever.
The nations will perish from his land.
17 Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted.
You strengthen their hearts,
and your ear pays attention,
18 to obtain justice for the fatherless and the crushed,
so that the worldly man[d] may no longer terrify.

Proverbs 24

24 Do not envy evil people,
and do not wish to be with them,
because their hearts plan violence,
and their lips speak trouble.

With wisdom a house is built.
With understanding it is established.
With knowledge its rooms are filled with every kind of riches,
both valuable and appealing.

A wise person grows strong,
and a knowledgeable man becomes more powerful,
because advice prepares you for battle,
and many advisors bring victory.

Wise decisions are out of reach[a] for a stubborn fool.
In court[b] he cannot open his mouth.

Whoever plans evil will be called a master schemer.
A foolish scheme is a sin,
and a mocker is disgusting to people.

10 If you fail to act in the day of trouble,
your strength is too little.
11 Rescue captives condemned to death,
and spare those staggering toward slaughter.
12 If you say, “We did not know about this,”
won’t the one who weighs motives notice?
Won’t the one who guards your life know about it,
and won’t he repay people according to what each one has done?

13 My son, eat honey, because it is good.
Flowing honey is sweet on your palate.
14 Know also that wisdom is sweet for your soul.
If you find it, then there is a future for you,
and your hope will never be cut off.

15 Do not be like the wicked who attack the home of the righteous.
Do not destroy his resting place,
16 because a righteous person may fall seven times, but he will get up,
while wicked people will stumble into misfortune.

17 Do not be happy when your enemy falls.
Do not let your heart celebrate when he stumbles.
18 If you do, the Lord will see it and consider it evil,
and he will turn his anger away from him.

19 Do not fret about evildoers.
Do not be jealous of wicked people,
20 because an evil person has no future.
The lamp of the wicked will be put out.

21 Fear the Lord, my son, and also the king.
Do not associate with those who are rebellious,
22 because their disaster will take place suddenly.
Who knows what ruin the Lord and the king will cause?

More Words of the Wise

23 These sayings also are by the wise:
To show partiality when administering justice is not good.
24 If anyone says to a guilty person, “You are innocent,”
people will curse him. Nations will denounce him.
25 However, it will be pleasant for those who convict the guilty.
A wonderful blessing will come upon them.

26 Someone who gives a straight answer gives a kiss on the lips.

27 Prepare your work outside,
and get things ready for yourself in the fields.
Afterward, build your house.

28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause.
Do not practice deception with your lips.
29 Do not think, “I will do to him what he did to me.
I will pay the man back for what he did.”

30 I passed by a lazy man’s field
and by a vineyard that belonged to a senseless man.
31 It was overgrown with thistles
and covered with weeds.
Its stone wall was broken down.
32 When I saw this, I took it to heart.
I observed and learned a lesson:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
34 and poverty will come on you like a prowler,
and scarcity will come like a warrior.

1 Thessalonians 3

Timothy’s Mission and Good Report

So, when we could not stand it any longer, we thought it best to remain behind in Athens alone, and we sent Timothy, our brother and coworker for God in the gospel of Christ.[a] We sent him to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one will be shaken by these trials, for you know well that we are destined for this. In fact, even when we were with you, we told you ahead of time that we were going to suffer, and it happened just that way, as you know. This is why, when I could not stand it any longer, I sent to find out about your faith, because I was afraid that somehow the Tempter had tempted you and our labor might have been for nothing.

But now, Timothy has returned to us from you and has told us the good news about your faith and love. He also told us that you always have fond memories of us and long to see us, just as much as we also long to see you. Because of this, brothers, in all our distress and affliction, we have been encouraged about you through your faith. For now we really live, if you are standing firm in the Lord. Indeed, how can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have before God on account of you? 10 Night and day we are praying earnestly to see you in person and to supply what is lacking in your faith.

11 May God our Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord increase your love and make it overflow for each other and for all people, just as ours does for you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts as blameless in holiness before our God and Father, when our Lord Jesus comes with all his saints.[b]
