Saul and Jonathan Are Dead

1 Now it happened after ^(A)the death of Saul, that David returned from ^(B)striking down the Amalekites. Then David remained two days in Ziklag. ² Now it happened that on the third day, behold, ^(C)a man came out of the camp from Saul. And ^(D)his clothes were torn and ^[a]dust was on his head. And it happened when he came to David, that ^(E)he fell to the ground and prostrated himself. ³ Then David said to him, “From where do you come?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” ⁴ And David said to him, “^(F)How did things go? Tell me now.” And he said, “The people have fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.” ⁵ So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” ⁶ And the young man who told him said, “By chance I happened to be on ^(G)Mount Gilboa, and behold, ^(H)Saul was leaning on his spear. And behold, the chariots and the horsemen pursued him closely. ⁷ Then he turned to look behind him, and he saw me and called to me. And I said, ‘Here I am.’ ⁸ And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I ^[b]answered him, ‘^(I)I am an Amalekite.’ ⁹ Then he said to me, ‘Please stand beside me and put me to death, for agony has seized me because my ^[c]life still lingers in me.’ ¹⁰ So I stood beside him ^(J)and put him to death, because I knew that he could not live after he had fallen. And ^(K)I took the crown which was on his head and the bracelet which was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”

¹¹ Then ^(L)David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so also did all the men who were with him. ¹² And they lamented and wept and ^(M)fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan and for the people of ^[d]Yahweh and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. ¹³ And David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” And he ^[e]answered, “^(N)I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.” ¹⁴ Then David said to him, “How is it you were not afraid ^(O)to send forth your hand to destroy the anointed of Yahweh?” ¹⁵ And David called one of the young men and said, “Approach and fall upon him.” ^(P)So he struck him and he died. ¹⁶ And David said to him, “^(Q)Your blood is on your head, for ^(R)your mouth has answered against you, saying, ‘I have put the anointed of Yahweh to death.’”

David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan

¹⁷ Then David ^(S)chanted with this funeral lament over Saul and Jonathan his son, ¹⁸ and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in ^(T)the book of Jashar.

Concerning Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning ^(A)spiritual gifts, brothers, ^(B)I do not want you to be ignorant. ^2 (C)You know that when you were pagans, you were ^(D)being led astray to the ^(E)mute idols, however you were led. ³ Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking ^[a](F)by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is ^[b](G)accursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is ^(H)Lord,” except ^[c](I)by the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Now there are ^(J)varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. ⁵ And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. ⁶ And there are varieties of workings, but the same ^(K)God who works everything in everyone. ⁷ But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit ^(L)for what is profitable. ⁸ For to one is given the word of ^(M)wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of ^(N)knowledge according to the same Spirit; ⁹ to someone else ^(O)faith ^[d]by the same Spirit, and to another ^(P)gifts of ^[e]healing ^[f]by the one Spirit, ¹⁰ and to another the workings of ^(Q)miracles, and to another ^(R)prophecy, and to another the ^[g](S)distinguishing of spirits, to someone else various ^(T)kinds of tongues, and to another the ^[h](U)translation of tongues. ¹¹ But one and the same Spirit works all these things, ^(V)distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

¹² For even ^(W)as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, ^(X)so also is Christ. ¹³ For also ^[i](Y)by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether ^(Z)Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to ^(AA)drink of one Spirit.

¹⁴ For also ^(AB)the body is not one member, but many. ¹⁵ If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason ^[j]any the less a part of the body. ¹⁶ And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason ^[k]any the less a part of the body. ¹⁷ If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? ¹⁸ But now God has ^(AC)appointed the members, each one of them, in the body, ^(AD)just as He desired. ¹⁹ And if they were all one member, where would the body be? ²⁰ But now ^(AE)there are many members, but one body. ²¹ And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” ²² On the contrary, how much more is it that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary, ²³ and those members of the body which we think as less honorable, ^[l]on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, ²⁴ whereas our more presentable members have no such need. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, ²⁵ so that there may be no ^[m]division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. ²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is ^[n]honored, all the members rejoice with it.

²⁷ Now you are ^(AF)Christ’s body, and ^(AG)individually members of it. ²⁸ And God has ^[o](AH)appointed in ^(AI)the church, first ^(AJ)apostles, second ^(AK)prophets, third ^(AL)teachers, then ^[p](AM)miracles, then ^(AN)gifts of healings, helps, ^(AO)administrations, various ^(AP)kinds of tongues. ²⁹ Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of ^[q]miracles? ³⁰ Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all ^[r](AQ)translate? ³¹ But ^[s]you ^(AR)earnestly desire the greater gifts.

And I will yet show you a more excellent way.

Vision of Yahweh’s Glory Departing the Temple

10 Then I looked, and behold, in the ^[a](A)expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a ^(B)sapphire stone, in appearance in the likeness of a ^(C)throne, appeared above them. ² And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the ^(D)whirling wheels under the ^[b]cherubim and fill your hands with ^(E)coals of fire from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.

³ Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the house when the man entered, and the cloud filled the ^(F)inner court. ⁴ Then the ^(G)glory of Yahweh rose up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the ^(H)house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the ^(I)brightness of the glory of Yahweh. ⁵ Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the ^(J)voice of ^[c]God Almighty when He speaks.

⁶ Now it happened that when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he entered and stood beside a wheel. ⁷ Then the cherub sent forth his hand from between the cherubim to the fire which was between the cherubim, took some up, and put it into the hands of the one clothed in linen, who took it and went out. ⁸ And the cherubim appeared to have the form of a man’s hand under their wings.

⁹ Then I looked, and behold, ^(K)four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a ^[d](L)Tarshish stone. ¹⁰ As for their appearance, all four of them had the same likeness, as if one wheel were within another wheel. ¹¹ As they went, they went ^(M)in any of their four ^[e]directions without turning as they went; but they went in the direction which ^[f]they faced, without turning as they went. ¹² And their ^(N)whole body, their backs, their hands, their wings, and the ^(O)wheels were full of eyes all around, the wheels belonging to all four of them. ¹³ The wheels were called in my hearing, the whirling wheels. ¹⁴ And ^(P)each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

¹⁵ Then the cherubim rose up. They are the ^(Q)living creatures that I saw by the river Chebar. ¹⁶ Now as the cherubim went, the wheels went beside them; also when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels would not turn from beside them. ¹⁷ When ^[g]the cherubim ^(R)stood still, ^[h]the wheels would stand still; and when they rose up, ^[i]the wheels would rise with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in them.

¹⁸ Then the glory of Yahweh departed from the threshold of the house and stood ^(S)over the cherubim. ¹⁹ When ^(T)the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the house of Yahweh, and the glory of the God of Israel ^[j]hovered over them.

²⁰ These are the ^(U)living creatures that I saw beneath the God of Israel by ^(V)the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim. ^21 (W)Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the likeness of human hands. ²² As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.
