Matthew 23-24

Jesus Tells The Crowds: Do Not Act Like The Scribes And Pharisees

23 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying— “The scribes and the Pharisees sat-down[a] on the seat of Moses. Therefore, do and be keeping all that they tell you. But do not be acting[b] in accordance with their works. For they say things and do not do them. And they bind-up heavy and hard-to-bear burdens[c] and lay them on the shoulders of people. But they are not willing to move[d] them with their finger. And they do all their works so-as to be seen by people. For they widen their phylacteries[e] and lengthen their tassels[f]. And they love the place-of-honor[g] at the banquets, and the seats-of-honor[h] in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi’[i] by people. But you— do not be called[j] ‘Rabbi’. For One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call[k] one on earth your father. For One is your Father— the heavenly One. 10 Nor be called master-teachers[l], because your master-teacher is One— the Christ. 11 But the greater[m] of you shall be your servant. 12 And whoever will exalt himself will be humbled, and whoever will humble himself will be exalted.

Woe To You, Scribes And Pharisees. You Are Blind Guides. How Will You Escape Hell?

13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are shutting the kingdom of the heavens in-front-of [n] people. For you are not entering, nor are you permitting the ones entering to enter. 14 [o] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you go-around the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte. And when he becomes one, you make him a son of Gehenna[p] double-more than you. 16 Woe to you, blind guides— the ones saying, ‘Whoever swears-an-oath by the temple, it is nothing. But whoever swears-an-oath by the gold of the temple, he is obligated’. 17 Foolish and blind ones! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple having sanctified[q] the gold? 18 And, ‘Whoever swears-an-oath by the altar, it is nothing. But whoever swears-an-oath by the gift[r] on it, he is obligated’. 19 Blind ones! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar sanctifying the gift? 20 Therefore, the one having sworn by the altar is swearing by it and by all the things on it. 21 And the one having sworn by the temple is swearing by it and by the One dwelling-in[s] it. 22 And the one having sworn by heaven is swearing by the throne of God and by the One sitting on it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are giving-a-tenth-of the mint and the dill and the cummin, and you neglected[t] the weightier things of the Law— the justice, and the mercy, and the faithfulness[u]. But you ought-to-have done these things, and not be neglecting those things. 24 Blind guides— the ones straining-out[v] the gnat, but swallowing[w] the camel! 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full from[x] [your] plundering and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee— first cleanse the inside of the cup, in order that the outside of it may also become clean! 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are similar to burial-places having been whitewashed[y], which outside appear beautiful, but inside are full of bones of dead ones and all impurity! 28 So also you outside appear righteous to people— but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness! 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you build the burial-places of the prophets and adorn[z] the tombs of the righteous ones, 30 and say, ‘If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been their partners in the blood of the prophets’. 31 So then, you are testifying concerning yourselves that you are sons[aa] of the ones having murdered the prophets. 32 And you— fill-up[ab] the measure of your fathers! 33 Snakes, brood of vipers, how may you escape from the condemnation of [ac] Gehenna?

God Will Avenge The Blood of All The Righteous On You. Your House Is Left Desolate

34 “For this reason behold, I am sending-forth prophets and wise ones and scribes[ad] to you— some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will whip in your synagogues and persecute from city to city— 35 so that all the righteous blood being shed on the earth[ae] may come upon you[af]: from the blood of Abel[ag] the righteous one, up to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. 37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning the ones having been sent-forth to her. How often I wanted to gather together your children the way a hen gathers together her chicks under her wings, and you did not want it. 38 Behold— your house is being left to you desolate[ah]. 39 For I say to you, you will by no means see Me[ai] from now on until you say, ‘Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord’”.

Jesus Tells His Disciples That The Temple Will Be Destroyed. They Ask, When?

24 And having departed from the temple, Jesus was proceeding. And His disciples came to Him to show Him the buildings of the temple. But the One, having responded, said to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I say to you— a stone upon a stone will by no means be left here which will not be torn-down[aj]”. And while He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us— when will these[ak] things happen? And what will be the sign of Your coming and the conclusion[al] of the age?” And having responded, Jesus said to them—

There Will Be Birthpangs, But The Gospel Will Reach The Whole World Before The End

“Be watching out that no one may deceive you. For[am] many will come on the basis of My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ’. And they will deceive many. And you will-certainly[an] hear-of wars and rumors of wars. See[ao] that you are not alarmed! For they must take place, but it is not yet the end. For nation will arise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. But all these things are[ap] a beginning of birth-pains. Then[aq] they will hand you over to affliction, and they will kill you. And you will be being hated by all the nations because of My name. 10 And then[ar] many will be caused-to-fall, and will hand one another over, and will hate one another. 11 And many false-prophets will arise and deceive many. 12 And the love of the majority will grow cold because of lawlessness being multiplied. 13 But the one having endured to the end[as]— this one will be saved. 14 And this good-news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations. And then the end[at] will come.

When You See Daniel’s Abomination, Flee. For There Will Be a Great Affliction

15 “Therefore when you see[au] the abomination of desolation[av]— the thing having been spoken through Daniel the prophet— standing in the holy place[aw] (let the one reading understand), 16 then let the ones in Judea be fleeing to the mountains. 17 Let the one upon the housetop not go down to take the things out of his house. 18 And let the one in the field not turn behind to take his cloak. 19 And woe to the ones having a child in the womb, and to the ones nursing in those days. 20 And be praying that your flight may not take place in winter, nor on a Sabbath. 21 For then[ax] there will be a great affliction[ay] such as has not taken place since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will take place. 22 And if those days had not been shortened[az], no[ba] flesh would have been saved. But those days will be shortened for the sake of the chosen ones.

Do Not Be Deceived. My Coming Will Be As Visible To All As Lightning

23 Then[bb] if someone says to you, ‘Behold— here is the Christ,’ or ‘Here’, do not believe it. 24 For false-christs and false-prophets will arise and give great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the chosen ones. 25 Behold— I have told you beforehand. 26 Therefore, if they say to you, ‘Behold— He is in the wilderness’, do not go out; ‘Behold— He is in the inner-rooms’, do not believe it. 27 For just as the lightning comes out from the east and is visible[bc] as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 Wherever the corpse[bd] may be, there the vultures will be gathered.

After That Affliction, The Powers Will Be Shaken. I Will Come On The Clouds In Glory

29 “And immediately after the affliction of those days, the sun[be] will be darkened, and the moon will not give its glow, and the stars will fall from the heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then[bf] the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the heaven. And at-that-time all the tribes of the earth will beat-their-breasts. And they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send-out His angels with a loud trumpet. And they will gather together His chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends[bg] of the heavens to their [other] ends.

The Parable of The Fig Tree: When You See These Things, You Know I Am Near

32 “Now learn the parable from the fig-tree[bh]: when its branch already becomes tender and grows-out its leaves, you know that the summer is near. 33 So also you— when you see all[bi] these things, you know[bj] that He[bk] is near, at the doors. 34 Truly I say to you that this[bl] generation will by no means pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by-no-means pass away.

But No One Knows The Day And Hour, So Keep Watching And Be Prepared Always

36 “But no one knows about that day and hour— not even the angels of the heavens, nor the Son— except the Father alone. 37 For just as the days of Noah were, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving-in-marriage, until which day Noah entered into the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took-away everyone, so also[bm] will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40 At-that-time there will be two men in the field— one is taken, and one is left; 41 two women grinding at the mill— one is taken[bn], and one is left. 42 Therefore keep-watching, because you do not know on which day your Lord is coming. 43 And you know[bo] that saying, that if the house-master had known on which watch[bp] the thief was coming, he would have kept-watch[bq] and would not have allowed his house to be broken-into. 44 For this reason you also be prepared ones— because the Son of Man is coming at an hour which you do not expect.

Wise Servants Found Working When The Master Returns Will Be Put In Charge of More

45 “Who then[br] is the faithful and wise slave whom his master put-in-charge[bs] over his body-of-servants[bt] that he might give them their food at the proper-time? 46 Blessed is that slave whom his master, having come, will find so doing. 47 Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge over all his possessions. 48 But if that bad slave says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying’, 49 and begins to strike his fellow-slaves, and is eating and drinking with the ones being drunk— 50 the master of that slave will come on a day which he does not expect, and at an hour which he does not know. 51 And he will cut him in two, and assign him his part[bu] with the hypocrites. In that place, there will be the weeping and the grinding of teeth.
