Read the Gospels in 40 Days
7 When He had ended all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered into Capernaum.
2 And a certain centurion’s servant (who was dear to him) was sick and ready to die.
3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him to come and heal his servant.
4 So they came to Jesus and pleaded with Him earnestly, saying “He is worthy. You should do this for him.
5 “For he loves our Nation, and he has built us a synagogue.”
6 Then Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself. For I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof.
7 “Therefore I did not think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant shall be whole.
8 “For I am also a man set under authority and have soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go.’ And he goes. And to another, ‘Come.’ And he comes. And to my servant, ‘Do this.’ And he does it.”
9 When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him. And He turned and said to the people who followed him, “I say to you, I have not found so great faith! No. Not in Israel.”
10 And when those who were sent returned to the house, they found the servant who had been sick, whole.
11 And it happened that the next day, He went into a city called Nain. And many of His disciples went with Him, and a great multitude.
12 Now when He came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out - the only begotten son of his mother, who was a widow - and many people of the city were with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her, and said to her, “Do not weep.”
14 And He went and touched the coffin. And those who bore him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, ‘Arise.’”
15 And the dead man sat up and began to speak. And He gave him to his mother.
16 Then a fear came upon them all. And they glorified God, saying, “A great Prophet is risen among us! And God has visited His people!”
17 And this word of Him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the surrounding region.
18 And the disciples of John reported all these things to him.
19 So John called two certain men of his disciples, and sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the coming One? Or shall we wait for another?”
20 And when the men had come to Him, they said, “John Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the coming One? Or shall we wait for another?’”
21 And at that time, He cured many of their sicknesses and plagues and evil spirits. And He gave sight freely to many of the blind.
22 And Jesus answered, and said to them, “Go your ways and show John what things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor receive the Gospel.
23 “And whoever does not stumble because of Me is blessed.”
24 And when the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the people of John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see - a reed shaken with the wind?
25 “But what did you go out to see - a man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.
26 “But what did you go forth to see - a Prophet? ‘Yes’, I say to you, ‘and greater than a Prophet.’
27 “This is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before your face, who shall prepare Your way before You.’
28 “For I say to you there is no greater Prophet than John among those who are born of women. Nevertheless, whoever is the least in the Kingdom of God, is greater than him.”
29 Then all the people who heard, and the tax collectors, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and the expounders of the Law despised the counsel of God against themselves and were not baptized by him.
31 And the Lord said, “To what shall I liken the men of this generation? And what are they like?
32 “They are like little children sitting in the marketplace, crying one to another, saying, ‘We have played the flute for you, and you have not danced. We have mourned for you, and you have not wept.’
33 “For John Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine. And you say, ‘He has a demon.’
34 “The Son of Man has come, and eats, and drinks. And you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
35 “But wisdom is justified by all her children.”
36 And one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went into the Pharisee’s house and sat down at table.
37 And behold, a woman in the city (who was a sinner), when she knew that Jesus sat at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought a box of ointment.
38 And she stood behind him, weeping at his feet. And she began to wash his feet with her tears. And she wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee who had asked Him, saw it, he spoke to himself, saying, “If this man were a Prophet, He would surely have known who and what kind of woman this is who touches Him. For she is a sinner.”
40 And Jesus answered, and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Master, say on.”
41 “There was a certain lender who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42 “When they had nothing with which to pay, he forgave them both. Therefore, tell Me, which of them will love him most?”
43 Simon answered, and said, “I suppose the one to whom he forgave most.” And He said to him, “You have judged rightly.”
44 Then he turned to the woman, and said to Simon, “See this woman? I entered into your house and you gave Me no water for my feet. But she has washed my feet with tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 “You gave Me no kiss. But since the time I came in, she has not ceased to kiss My feet.
46 “You did not anoint My head with oil. But she has anointed My feet with ointment.
47 “Therefore I say to you her many sins are forgiven. For she has loved much. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.”
48 And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49 And those who sat at table with Him began to say among themselves, “Who is this Who even forgives sins?”
50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
8 And afterward, it happened that He went through every city and town, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him,
2 as well as certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities (such as Mary, called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils;
3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; and Susanna; and many others who ministered to Him from their possessions).
4 Now when many people had gathered together and come to Him out of all the cities, He spoke a parable.
5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside. And it was trampled underfoot, and the birds of heaven devoured it.
6 “And some fell on the stones. And after it sprang up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
7 “And some fell among thorns. And the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.
8 “And some fell on good ground. And it sprang up and bore fruit, a hundredfold.” And as He said these things, He cried, “The one who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
9 Then His disciples asked Him what parable that was.
10 And He said, “To you it is given to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But to others they come in parables. So that when they see, they will not see. And when they hear, they will not understand.
11 “The parable is this: The seed is the Word of God.
12 “And that which are along the way are those who hear, but afterward the devil comes and takes away the Word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 “But the ones on the stones are those who, when they have heard the Word, receive it with joy. But they have no roots. So, for a while they believe, but in the time of temptation they go away.
14 “And that which fell among thorns are those who have heard, but after their departure are choked with cares and riches and the pursuit of pleasure. And they bring forth no fruit.
15 “But that which fell in good ground are those who hear the Word with an honest and good heart, and keep it, and bring forth fruit through patience.
16 “No one, when he lights a candle, hides it under a vessel, or puts it under the bed. But he sets it on a candlestick, so that those who enter may see the light.
17 “For nothing is secret that shall not be evident. Nor is anything hidden that shall not be known, and come to light.
18 “Therefore, watch how you hear. For whoever has, to him shall be given. And whoever has not, even that which he seems to have shall be taken from him.
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to Him. And they could not come near to Him because of the crowd.
20 And someone said to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, and wish see You.”
21 But He answered, and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are those who hear the Word of God and do it.”
22 And it happened that on a certain day, He went into a ship with His disciples. And He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” And they launched forth.
23 And as they sailed, He fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down on the lake. And they were filling with water and were in danger.
24 Then they went to Him, and awoke Him, saying, “Master! Master! We are going to die!” And He arose and rebuked the wind and the waves. And they ceased. And it was calm.
25 Then He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they feared, and wondered among themselves, saying, “Who is this Who commands both the winds and water? And they obey Him!”
26 So they sailed to the region of the Gadarenes (which is near Galilee).
27 And as He went out to land, a certain man from the city met Him. He had had demons for a long time, and he wore no clothes. Nor did he live in a house, but in the graves.
28 And when he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him. And with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus the Son of God, the Most High? I beg You, do not torment me!”
29 For He commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had often seized him. Therefore, he was bound with chains and kept in shackles. But he broke the bonds and was carried into wilderness by the demon.
30 Then Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion!” (because many demons had entered into him).
31 And they begged him not to command them to go out into the deep.
32 And there was a large herd of swine feeding on a nearby hill. And the demons begged Him to let them enter them. So, He allowed them.
33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered into the swine. And the herd was carried violently down a steep bank into the lake and was choked.
34 When the herdsmen saw what was done, they fled. And when they had left, they reported it in the city and in the country.
35 Then they came out to see what had happened. And they came to Jesus and found the man out of whom the demons had come, sitting at the feet of Jesus (clothed, and in his right mind). And they were afraid.
36 Those who saw it also told them by what means he who had been possessed with the demon was healed.
37 Then the whole multitude of the country surrounding the Gadarenes begged Him to leave, for they were taken with great fear. And He went into the ship and returned.
38 Then the man out of whom the demons had come begged Him to let him stay with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying,
39 “Return to your own house. And show what great things God has done to you.” So, he went his way, and preached throughout all the city what great things Jesus had done to him.
40 And it happened that when Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him. For they all waited for Him.
41 And behold, there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house.
42 For he had an only daughter (about twelve years of age) who lay dying. And as He went, the people thronged Him.
43 And a woman having a twelve-year-long flow of blood (who had spent all she had on physicians, and could not be healed by any)
44 came behind Him. And she touched the hem of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.
45 Then Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When everyone denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitude jostles You, and presses against You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
46 And Jesus said, “Someone touched Me. For I perceive that power has gone out of Me.”
47 When the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came, trembling, and fell down before Him. And before all the people, she told Him why she had touched Him, and how she had been healed immediately.
48 And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good courage. Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
49 While He was still speaking, someone from the ruler of the synagogue’s house came and said to Him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master.”
50 When Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not fear. Only believe, and she shall be saved.”
51 And when He went to the house, He did not allow anyone to go in with Him except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the maid.
52 And all wept and mourned for her. But He said, “Do not weep. For she is not dead, but sleeps.”
53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead.
54 So He sent them all out. And He took her by the hand and cried, saying, “Little girl, arise!”
55 Then her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately. And He commanded to give her food.
56 Then her parents were astonished. But He commanded them to tell no one what had happened.
9 Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to heal diseases.
2 And He sent them forth to preach the Kingdom of God, and to cure the sick.
3 And He said to them, “Take nothing on your journey, neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; nor have two tunics apiece.
4 “And whatever house you enter, stay there, and leave from there.
5 “And however many will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
6 And they went out and went through every town preaching the Gospel and healing everywhere.
7 Now Herod the Tetrarch heard of all that had been done by Him. And he doubted, because it was said by some that John had risen again from the dead.
8 And by some that Elijah had appeared. And by some that one of the old Prophets had risen again.
9 Then Herod said, “John I have beheaded. Who then is this of Whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see Him.
10 And when the Apostles returned, they told Him what great things they had done. Then He took them and went aside into a solitary place, near the city called Bethsaida.
11 But when the people knew of it, they followed Him. And He received them, and spoke to them of the Kingdom of God, and healed those needing to be healed.
12 And when the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the people away, so that they may go into the surrounding towns and villages, and lodge, and get food. For we are here in a desert place.
13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.”
14 For there were about five thousand men. Then He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.”
15 And they did so and made all sit down.
16 Then He took the five loaves, and the two fish, and looked up to Heaven and blessed them; and broke and gave to the disciples to set before the people.
17 So they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces from what remained.
18 And it happened that as He was alone praying, His disciples were with Him. And He asked them, saying, “Whom do the people say that I am?”
19 They answered, and said, “John Baptist. And others say, Elijah. And some say that one of the old Prophets has risen again.”
20 And He said to them, “But Whom do you say that I am?” Peter answered, and said, “The Christ of God.”
21 And He warned and commanded them to tell that to no one,
22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, and by the chief priests and scribes, and be killed; and the third day rise again.”
23 And He said to them all, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
24 “For whoever would save his life, shall lose it. And whoever shall lose his life, for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 "For what does it benefit a man if he wins the whole world and destroys himself, or loses himself?
26 “For whoever shall be ashamed of Me and My words, of him shall the Son of Man be ashamed when He shall come in His own Glory, and in the Glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.
27 “And I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste of death till they have seen the Kingdom of God.”
28 And it happened that about eight days after those words, He took Peter and John, and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29 And as He prayed, the appearance of His face was changed. And His clothes became white and radiant.
30 And behold, two men talked with Him (who were Moses and Elijah),
31 They appeared in glory and told of His departure which he would accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 But Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep. And when they awoke, they saw His Glory, and the two men standing with him.
33 And it happened that as they departed from Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Therefore, let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.
34 While he said this, a cloud came and overshadowed them. And they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him.”
36 And after the voice spoke, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it secret and told no one in those days anything they had seen.
37 And it happened that on the next day, as they came down from the mountain, many people met Him.
38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Master, I beg You! Look upon my son! For he is all that I have!
39 “And lo, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries. And he convulses him, so that he foams at the mouth. And when he has bruised him, he departs from him roughly.
40 “Now I have begged Your disciples to cast him out, but they could not.
41 Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation! How long now shall I be with you, and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
42 And while He was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and returned him to his father.
43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. And while they all wondered at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples,
44 “Let these words sink down into your ears. For the time will come when the Son of Man shall be delivered into the hands of man.”
45 But they did not understand that word, for it was hidden from them. So, they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask Him about that word.
46 Then a dispute arose among them: which one of them should be the greatest.
47 When Jesus saw the thoughts of their hearts, He took a little child and set him by Him.
48 And He said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My Name, receives Me. And whoever shall receive Me, receives Him Who sent Me. For the one who is least among you all shall be great.”
49 And John answered and said, “Master, we saw one casting out demons in Your Name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”
50 Then Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him. For whoever is not against us, is with us.”
51 And it happened that when it was time for Him to be received up, He set His face to go to Jerusalem,
52 And sent messengers before Him. And they went and entered into a town of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him.
53 But they would not receive Him, because His face was set toward Jerusalem.
54 And when His disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command that fire come down from Heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”
55 But Jesus turned around and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know of what spirit you are.
56 “For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” Then they went to another town.
57 And it happened that as they went on the way, a certain man said to Him, “I will follow You, Lord, wherever You go!”
58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the heaven nests. But the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
59 But He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 And Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But go and preach the Kingdom of God.”
61 Then another said, “I will follow You, Lord. But first let me go and bid farewell to those who are at my house.
62 And Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
