Ezekiel 42-43

Description of Rooms for the Priests

42 And he brought me out to the outer courtyard to the north,[a] and he brought me to the chamber which was opposite the courtyard and which is opposite the building to the north. As to[b] the face of the length of the building with the doorway to the north, it was a hundred cubits,[c] and its[d] width was fifty cubits.[e] Opposite the twenty cubits of the inner courtyard,[f] and opposite the pavement that was to the outer courtyard was a gallery facing[g] a gallery in the three stories. And in front of[h] the chambers was a passageway ten cubits[i] in width toward the inside, a walkway of one cubit,[j] and their doorways were to the north. And the upper chambers narrowed, for the galleries took away space from them more than they took from the lower levels and more than they took from the middle level in the building. For they[k] were three stories and they had no pillars[l] like[m] the pillars of[n] the courtyards; therefore they were smaller than the lower stories and than the middle stories from the ground up. And there was a wall that was to the outside alongside[o] the chambers on the walkway to[p] the outer courtyard[q] in front of[r] the chambers; its length was fifty[s] cubits.[t] For[u] the length of the chambers which were to the outer courtyard was fifty[v] cubits,[w] and look![x] The chambers on the front of the temple were a hundred[y] cubits.[z] And from under these chambers was the entrance[aa] from the east for them when one enters[ab] from the outer courtyard.

10 All along the width of the wall of the courtyard eastward[ac] in front of the courtyard to the front of the building were chambers. 11 And a walkway was before them[ad] like the appearance of the chambers which were on the north,[ae] just like them in their length, and so was their width and all their exits, and they were built like their arrangements and like their doorways, 12 and like the doorways of the chambers which were on the way of the south was a doorway at the head of the way[af] before the stone wall, projecting[ag] on[ah] the way of the east at their coming.[ai]

13 And he said to me, “The chambers of the north and the chambers of the south which are before[aj] the courtyard, they are the holy chambers[ak] in which the priests, who are near to Yahweh, will eat the most holy objects.[al] There they shall put the most holy objects,[am] and the grain offering and the sin offering and the guilt offering, for the place is holy. 14 When the priests enter,[an] then they shall not go out from the sanctuary to the outer courtyard; and there they must put[ao] their garments in which they serve because they are holy. They must put on other garments and then they may approach the area that is for the people.

15 And he completed the measurements of the inner temple, and he brought me to the walkway of the gate that faces toward the east[ap] and he measured it all the way around.[aq] 16 He measured the east side with the reed[ar] for[as] measuring, five hundred cubits,[at] with respect to reeds with the reed for measurement, he measured it all around. 17 He measured the north side as five hundred cubits, with respect to reeds with the reed for measurement all around. 18 Then he measured the south side as five hundred cubits, with respect to reeds with the reed for measurement. 19 He went around the west side[au] and he measured five hundred cubits, with respect to reeds with the reed for measurement. 20 Toward the four sides[av] he measured it; there was a wall for it all the way around.[aw] Its length was five hundred cubits[ax] and its width was five hundred cubits, in order to make a separation between what is holy and what is common.

Return of the Lord’s Glory and Description of Sacrifices and Worship

43 And he brought me to the gate which was facing east.[ay] And, look! The glory of the God of Israel, it came from the way of the east, and its sound was like the sound of many waters[az] and the land radiated due to his glory! And[ba] the appearance of the vision which I saw was as[bb] the vision which I saw at his[bc] coming to destroy the city, and these visions were also as[bd] the vision which I saw by the Kebar River,[be] and I fell on my face.

And then the glory of Yahweh came to the temple by the way of the gate facing east.[bf] And the Spirit lifted me and it brought me to the inner courtyard and, look! The glory of Yahweh filled the temple! And I heard someone speaking to me from the house,[bg] and a man was standing beside me. And he said to me, “Son of man,[bh] this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet where I will dwell[bi] in the midst of the Israelites[bj] to eternity, and they, the house of Israel, they and their kings, will not again defile my holy name[bk] with their fornication and with their offerings for the dead[bl] of their kings on their high places. When they placed their threshold[bm] with[bn] my threshold, their doorframe beside my doorframe and the[bo] wall was between me and between them, then they defiled my holy name,[bp] with their detestable things that they did, and so I consumed them in my anger. Now let them send their fornication far away and the offerings for the dead[bq] of their kings away from me, and I will dwell in the midst of them forever.[br]

10 You, son of man,[bs] describe to the house of Israel the temple and let them be ashamed of their iniquities and let them measure the pattern. 11 And if they are ashamed of all that they did, then the plan of the temple and its arrangement and its exits and its entrances and all of its plans[bt] and all of its statutes. And all of its plans[bu] and all of its laws[bv] make known to them and write them before their eyes, so that they may remember all of its plans and all of its statutes, so that they do them! 12 This is the law[bw] of the temple: On the top of the mountain, all of its territory, all the way around it,[bx] will be most holy.[by] Look, this is the law of the temple.

13 And these are the measurements of the altar in the cubits[bz] (a cubit is a cubit and a handbreadth):[ca] now its gutter[cb] is a cubit[cc] in depth by a cubit[cd] in width[ce] and its rim along its edge all around is one span,[cf] and this is also the height of the altar. 14 And from the gutter[cg] at the ground up to the lower ledge is two cubits,[ch] and its width is one cubit,[ci] and from the small ledge up to the large ledge is four cubits,[cj] and its width is one cubit. 15 And the altar hearth was four cubits,[ck] and from the altar hearth and upwards[cl] were the four horns of the altar. 16 And the altar hearth was twelve[cm] cubits in length and twelve[cn] cubits in width[co]; it was squared on its four sides.[cp] 17 And the ledge was fourteen[cq] cubits in length with fourteen[cr] cubits its width[cs] to all four of its sides, and a rim was all around it of one-half cubit.[ct] And the gutter[cu] for it was a cubit[cv] all around, and its steps were facing east.”

18 And he said to me, “Son of man,[cw] thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘These are the statutes of the altar on the day when it is made,[cx] to sacrifice a burnt offering on it and to sprinkle blood on it. 19 And you must give to the Levitical priests who are from the offspring of Zadok, the ones coming near me,” declares[cy] the Lord Yahweh, “to serve me, a bull, a calf[cz] as a sin offering.

20 You must take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar,[da] and the four corners of the ledge, and on the rim all around; thus you must purify it and make atonement for it. 21 And you must take the bull, the sin offering, and you must burn it in the designated place of the temple outside of the holy place. 22 And on the second day you must offer a he-goat without defect as a sin offering, and they must purify the altar like[db] they purified with the bull. 23 When you are finished[dc] from purifying, you must offer a bull, a calf,[dd] without defect, and a ram from the flock without defect. 24 And you must bring them near before[de] Yahweh, and the priests must throw salt on them, and they must offer them as a burnt offering to Yahweh. 25 For seven days you must provide a goat of sin offering for the day and a bull, a calf,[df] and a ram from the flock without defect; you must provide them. 26 Seven days they must purify the altar and they must cleanse it and so they will consecrate it.[dg] 27 And they will finish the days, and then[dh] on the eighth day and beyond that the priests will offer on the altar your burnt offerings and your fellowship offerings, and then I will be pleased with you,” declares[di] the Lord Yahweh.

James 5

Woes on the Rich Who Oppress Others

Come now, you rich people, weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming upon you! Your wealth has rotted, and your clothing has become moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have become corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you, and it will consume your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages that were held back by you from the workers who reap your fields cry out, and the cries of the reapers have come to the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived self-indulgently on the earth[a] and have lived luxuriously. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous person; he does not resist you.

Exhortation to Patience

Therefore be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the soil, being patient concerning it until it receives the early and late rains. You also be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is near. Brothers, do not complain against one another, in order that you may not be judged. Behold, the judge stands before the doors! 10 Brothers, take as an example of perseverance and endurance the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider blessed those who have endured. You have heard about the patient endurance of Job, and you saw the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is compassionate and merciful. 12 Now above all, my brothers, do not swear either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no, no, in order that you may not fall under judgment.

The Effective Prayer of Faith

13 Is anyone among you suffering misfortune? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the elders of the church and they should pray over him, anointing him with olive oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins he will be forgiven[b]. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much. 17 Elijah was a human being[c] with the same nature as us, and he prayed fervently[d] for it not to rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit.

19 My brothers, if anyone among you should wander away from the truth and someone turns him back, 20 he should know that the one who turns a sinner back from the error of his way will save that person’s[e] soul from death, and will cover over a great number of sins.

Psalm 119:1-16

Aleph[a]

119 Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of Yahweh.
Blessed are those who keep his testimonies;
they seek him with a whole heart.
They also do no wrong;
they walk in his ways.
You have commanded[b] your precepts,
that we should keep them diligently.
Oh that my ways were steadfast,
to keep your statutes!
Then I would not be ashamed
when I look to all your commands.
I will give you thanks with an upright heart,
when I learn your righteous laws.
I will heed your statutes;
do not utterly forsake me.

Beth

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By taking heed according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought you;
do not let me stray from your commands.
11 In my heart I have hidden your word,[c]
so that I may not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Yahweh.
Teach me your statutes.
13 With my lips I have told of
all the ordinances of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I have rejoiced
as I would over all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts
and look at[d] your ways.
16 I will take delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.

Proverbs 28:6-7

Better to be poor and walking in one’s integrity
    than to be crooked of ways when one is rich.
He who keeps instruction is a child of understanding,
    but the companion of gluttons will shame his father.
