Version
Ezekiel 40:28-41:26

Gates to the Inner Courtyard

28 And he brought me to the inner courtyard through[a] the gate of the south, and he measured the south gate, and it had measurements like the others.[b] 29 And its alcoves and its pilasters and its porticos were just like these measurements. And it had windows for it and for its porticos[c] all the way around,[d] fifty cubits[e] along[f] its length, and twenty-five cubits[g] wide. 30 And there were porticos all the way around[h] its length, twenty-five cubits;[i] and its width was five cubits.[j] 31 And its porticos were to the outer courtyard, and palm tree images were on its pilasters, and eight steps were for its stairs.

32 And he brought me to the inner courtyard by way of the east gate, and he measured the gate as just like the other measurements.[k] 33 And its alcoves and its pilasters and its porticos were also like these measurements, and windows were for it and for its porticos all around;[l] its length was fifty cubits,[m] and it was twenty-five cubits[n] wide. 34 And its porticos were toward the outer courtyard, and palm tree images were on its pilasters one each side,[o] and eight steps served as it stairs.[p]

35 And he brought me to the gate of the north, and he measured it; and he measured the same measurements as these others,[q] 36 its alcoves, its pilasters and porticos, and its windows[r] all the way around,[s] and a length of fifty cubits[t] and twenty-five cubits wide.[u] 37 And its pilasters faced the outer courtyard,[v] and it had palm tree images on its pilasters[w] on each side;[x] and eight steps served as its stairs.

Rooms for Sacrificial Preparations

38 And a chamber with its doorway was in[y] the pilasters at the gates,[z] and there they rinsed off[aa] the burnt offering. 39 And in the portico of the gate were two tables on each side[ab] to slaughter the burnt offering on them and the sin offering and the guilt offering. 40 And on the outer side as one goes up to the doorway of the gate to the north were two tables, and on the other side, which is toward the portico of the gate, were two tables. 41 On each side of the gate were four tables,[ac] eight tables in all, and on them they slaughtered sacrifices. 42 And four tables were for the burnt offering, and made of dressed stones, one cubit and a half[ad] long and one cubit and a half wide and one cubit[ae] high was their measurements,[af] and they placed the objects[ag] with which they slaughtered the burnt offering on them and the sacrifice. 43 And there were double-pronged hooks, one handbreadth in width, put in place in the house[ah] all around, and on the tables was the flesh of the offering.

Rooms for Priests and Other Worship Leaders

44 And on the outside of the inner gate, there were chambers for[ai] singers in the inner courtyard, which was to the side of the north gate, and their faces[aj] were to the south[ak] with respect to one, and on the side of the east gate one facing to the north. 45 And he said to me, “This chamber with its face toward the south[al] is for the priests who are taking care of the responsibility of the temple. 46 And the chamber with its face to the north[am] is for the priests who are taking care of the responsibility of the altar. They are the descendants[an] of Zadok, the ones who approach from among the descendants[ao] of Levi to Yahweh to serve him.”

Inner Courtyard and Temple Measurements

47 And he measured the courtyard as to its length, a hundred cubits,[ap] and a hundred cubits[aq] wide, squared, and the altar is in front of[ar] the temple. 48 And he brought me to the portico of the temple, and he measured the pilaster of the portico, five cubits on each side,[as] and the width of the gate was three cubits on each side.[at] 49 The length of the portico was twenty cubits[au] and its width eleven cubits,[av] and with ten steps they went up to it, and the pilasters had pillars,[aw] one on each side.[ax]

Sanctuary and Temple

41 And he brought me to the temple sanctuary,[ay] and he measured the pilasters, six cubits[az] wide on each side;[ba] this was the width of the tent.[bb] And the width of the doorway was ten cubits,[bc] and the sidewall of the doorway was five cubits on each side,[bd] and he measured its[be] length as forty cubits,[bf] and its width was twenty cubits.[bg] And he went into the inner room, and he measured the pilaster of the doorway as two cubits[bh] and the doorway as six cubits[bi] and the width of the doorway seven cubits.[bj] And he measured its length as twenty cubits[bk] and its width as twenty cubits to the front of the temple, and he said to me, “This is the most holy place.[bl]

And he measured the wall of the temple as six cubits,[bm] and the width of the side room as four cubits[bn] all along the outside wall for the temple all around the wall.[bo] And the side rooms were side by side[bp] in three stories and a total of thirty rooms,[bq] and there were offsets[br] in the wall, which was for the temple for the side rooms, all the way around[bs] to be supports, and so they were not supports extending into the wall of the temple. And each level widened, and it went around[bt] upward[bu] to the side rooms for the structure that surrounds[bv] the temple upward[bw] all the way around,[bx] therefore the width increased to the temple upward,[by] and thus the lower level goes up to the upper level by means of the middle story.

And I saw for the temple a platform all the way around[bz] the foundations of the side rooms; it was the length of a full reed, six cubits long.[ca] The width of the outside wall, which was for the side room to the outside, was five cubits,[cb] and a space that was set between the side rooms, which was for the temple 10 and between the chambers was the width of twenty cubits[cc] all around the temple, all the way around[cd] it. 11 And the doorway of the side room faced[ce] the open area; one doorway faced[cf] the north,[cg] and one doorway was to the south, and the width of the place of the open area was five cubits[ch] all around.[ci] 12 And the building that faced[cj] the courtyard was toward the west,[ck] and its width was seventy cubits,[cl] and the wall of the building was five cubits[cm] wide all the way around,[cn] and its length was ninety cubits.[co] 13 And he measured the temple, and its length was a hundred cubits,[cp] and the courtyard and the building and its walls, their length was a hundred cubits.[cq] 14 And the width of the front of the temple and the courtyard to the east was a hundred cubits.[cr] 15 And he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard[cs] at the rear[ct] and its galleries, a hundred cubits[cu] on each side,[cv] and also the temple, the court, and the porticos of the courtyard, 16 the thresholds and the framed windows and the galleries around the three of them. Before the threshold was a covering of wood all around,[cw] and from the ground up to the windows, and all around the windows, they were covered. 17 Above[cx] the doorway and up to the inner temple[cy] and on the outside, and on all of the wall all the way around[cz] in the inner and in the outer areas were patterns,[da] 18 and it was made of cherubim and palm tree images; a palm tree image between cherub and cherub, and the cherub had two faces.[db] 19 And the face of a human was toward[dc] the palm tree image on the one side,[dd] and the face of a fierce strong lion faced[de] the palm tree image on the other side;[df] this work was executed[dg] for the entire temple all the way around.[dh] 20 From the ground up to above[di] the doorway,[dj] the cherubim and the palm tree images were made,[dk] and also the outer wall of the temple.

21 As far as the temple is concerned its doorframe was squared, and before[dl] the sanctuary was the appearance as it were the appearance of 22 a wooden altar[dm] that was three cubits[dn] high, and its length was two cubits,[do] and its corners[dp] for it and its length and its walls were of wood. And he spoke to me, “This is the table that is before[dq] Yahweh.” 23 And the two doors were for the temple and for the sanctuary. 24 And two leaves[dr] of a door were for each of the doors, two hinged leaves of a door: two were for the first door, and two leaves of a door were for the other door. 25 And cherubim were made[ds] on them, that is, on the doors of the temple and palm tree images like the ones prepared for the walls;[dt] and an overhang of wood was on the surface of the porticos on the outside. 26 And narrow windows and palm tree images were on either side,[du] and on the side walls of the portico, and the side rooms of the temple and their[dv] overhang.

James 4

Subject Yourselves to God

From where are conflicts and from where are quarrels among you? Is it not from this, from your pleasures that wage war among your members? You desire and do not have; you murder and are filled with envy, and are not able to obtain; you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, in order that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that in vain the scripture says, “The spirit which he caused to dwell in us desires jealously”?[a] But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says,

“God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.”[b]

Therefore subject yourselves to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded! Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your[c] joy to gloominess. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

11 Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. The one who speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of the law.[d] 12 There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your[e] neighbor?

Arrogant Boasting About the Future

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there, and carry on business and make a profit,” 14 you who do not know what will happen tomorrow[f], what your life will be like[g]. For you are a smoky vapor that appears for a short time and then disappears. 15 Instead you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to the one who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Psalm 118:19-29

19 Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to Yah.[a]
20 This is the gate of Yahweh,
through which the righteous will enter.
21 I will give thanks to you for you have answered me,
and you have become my salvation.[b]
22 The stone the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This is from Yahweh;
it is wonderful in our eyes.
24 This is the day Yahweh has worked;[c]
let us rejoice and be glad in him.[d]
25 O Yahweh, please save;
O Yahweh, please grant success.
26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of Yahweh.
We bless you[e] from the house[f] of Yahweh.
27 Yahweh is God, and he has given us light.[g]
Bind the festal sacrifice[h] with cords[i]
to the horns[j] of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you.
You are my God; I will exalt you.
29 Give thanks to Yahweh for he is good,
for his loyal love is forever.

Proverbs 28:3-5

A man who is poor and oppresses the impoverished
is a beating rain that leaves[a] no food.
Those who forsake instruction will praise the wicked,
but they who guard instruction will struggle against them.
Men of evil do not understand justice,
but seekers of Yahweh understand completely.[b]
