Ezekiel 39:1-40:27

God’s Destruction of Gog and His Hordes

39 “And you, son of man,[a] prophesy against Gog, and you must say, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Look! I am against you Gog, the head[b] leader of Meshech and Tubal, and I will turn you around, and I will drag you along, and I will bring you up from the remote areas of the north, and I will bring you against the mountains of Israel, and I will strike your bow from your left hand,[c] and your arrows from your right hand[d] I will cause to fall. On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all of your troops, and the peoples who are with you, to birds[e] of prey, birds of every wing,[f] and animals of the field I will give you as food. On the surface of the field you will fall, for I myself[g] have spoken,” declares[h] the Lord Yahweh. “And I will send fire against Magog and among the people inhabiting the coastlands in safety,[i] and they will know that I am Yahweh. And my holy name[j] I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and I will not let the name of my holiness be profaned anymore, and the nations will know that I am Yahweh, the holy one in Israel. Look! it is coming, and it will happen,” declares[k] the Lord Yahweh. “It is the day about which I have spoken.[l]

“ʻ“And the inhabitants of the towns[m] of Israel will go out, and they will set ablaze, and they will kindle a fire with a weapon[n] and a small shield and a shield,[o] with a bow and with arrows, and with hand clubs[p] and with spears,[q] and so they will light a fire with them, a fire lasting seven years.[r] 10 And they will not carry trees from the field, and they will not chop wood from the forests, for with the weapons[s] they will light a fire; and they will plunder those plundering them, and they will plunder those plundering them,”’ declares[t] the Lord Yahweh.

11 “‘“And then[u] on that day I will give to Gog a grave there[v] in Israel, The Valley of the Travelers, east of the sea,[w] and it will block[x] the travelers and Gog and all of his hordes[y] they will bury there, and they will call it the Valley of Hamon-Gog.[z] 12 And the house of Israel will bury them for seven months to cleanse the land. 13 All of the people of the land will bury them, and it will be an honor for them on the day when I appear,”’ declares[aa] the Lord Yahweh. 14 ʻ“And they will set apart men to continually[ab] go through the land burying the travelers,[ac] the ones left over on the surface of the land to cleanse it; for the whole of[ad] seven months they will explore it. 15 And the ones going through, they will go through within the land, and if anyone sees the bones of a person, then he will build beside it a sign to remain until the buriers have buried him in the Valley of Hamon-Gog.[ae] 16 And furthermore the name of the city there is Hamonah,[af] and thus they will cleanse the land.”’

17 “And you, son of man,[ag] thus says the Lord Yahweh: ‘Say to all kinds of birds and animals of the field,[ah] “Be gathered, come be gathered from everywhere[ai] to my sacrifice that I am sacrificing for you, a great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel, and you will eat flesh, and you will drink blood. 18 Flesh of warriors you will eat, and the blood of leaders of the land you will drink; rams, young rams and goats, bulls, and the fattened animals of Bashan—all of them! 19 And you will eat fat until you are satiated,[aj] and you will drink blood until you are drunk[ak] from my sacrifice that I sacrifice for you, 20 and you will be satisfied at my table with horse and horsemen and warriors and every man of war,”’ declares[al] the Lord Yahweh. 21 “And I will display my glory among the nations, and all of the nations will see my judgment that I have executed and my hand that I have laid upon them.

22 “And the house of Israel will know that I am Yahweh their God from that day and beyond, 23 and the nations will know that because of their guilt the house of Israel went into exile, because[am] they acted unfaithfully against me, and I hid my face from them, and I gave them into the hand of their foes, and they fell by the sword, all of them. 24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgression I dealt with them, and I hid my face from them.

25 Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob, and I will have compassion on all of the house of Israel, and I will be jealous[an] for my holy name.[ao] 26 And they will forget their disgrace and all of their infidelity that they displayed against me when they dwelt on their soil in safety[ap] with nobody making them afraid.[aq] 27 When I restore them from the nations and I gather them from the countries of their enemies, then I will show myself holy through them before the eyes of many nations. 28 And they will know that I am Yahweh their God, because of when I deported them into the nations, and I reassembled them to their soil, and I will not let any of them remain there any longer.[ar] 29 And I will not hide my face again from them when I pour out my Spirit over[as] the house of Israel,” declares[at] the Lord Yahweh.

A Vision of the New Temple

40 In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was destroyed, in this day exactly, the hand of Yahweh was on me, and he brought me there in visions from God. He brought me to the land of Israel and put me on a very high mountain, and on it was something like a structure of a city to the south. And he brought me there, and look, there was a man whose[au] appearance was like the appearance of bronze, and a cord of linen was in his hand and a reed for measurement; he was standing in the gate. And the man spoke to me, “Son of man,[av] look with your eyes and listen with your ears and apply[aw] your heart to all that I am showing you, for you were brought here in order to show you this; tell all that you are seeing to the house of Israel.”

The Eastern Gate

And there was a wall on the outside of the temple all the way around it,[ax] and in the hand of the man the reed[ay] for measurement was six long cubits, according to[az] the cubit[ba] and a handbreadth,[bb] and he measured the width of the outer wall as one reed,[bc] and the height as one reed.[bd] And then he went toward[be] the gate whose face was to the east.[bf] And he went up by[bg] its steps, and he measured the threshold of the gate, one reed[bh] wide. And the alcove[bi] was one reed[bj] long and one reed[bk] wide,[bl] and between the alcoves was five cubits,[bm] and the threshold of the gate along the side of the portico of the gate on the inside[bn] was one reed.[bo] And then he measured the portico of the gate on the inside[bp] as one reed.[bq] And he measured the portico of the gate as eight cubits,[br] and its pilaster was two cubits[bs] thick, and he measured the portico of the gate on the inside.[bt] 10 And the alcoves[bu] of the gate toward the way[bv] eastward[bw] were three on each side;[bx] the same measurements applied to all three of them;[by] and the same measurement applied to the pilaster[bz] on each side.[ca] 11 And he measured the width of the doorway of the gate as ten cubits[cb] and the length of the gateway[cc] was thirteen cubits.[cd] 12 And a wall[ce] was before[cf] the alcoves; one cubit[cg] on either side[ch] was the wall from here.[ci] And the alcove was six cubits[cj] on each side.[ck] 13 And he measured the gate from the top slab of the alcove to its opposite top slab as twenty-five cubits in width, from one entrance to the other one opposite it.[cl] 14 And he made the pilasters sixty cubits,[cm] and to the pilaster of the courtyard all the way around the gate.[cn] 15 And from the front of[co] the gate at the entrance to the front of[cp] the portico of the inner gate was fifty cubits.[cq] 16 And there were narrow windows for the alcoves and for their pilasters to the inside of the gate all the way around[cr] it. And likewise with respect to the porticos and windows were all the way around[cs] to the inside, and on a pilaster there were images of palm trees.[ct]

The Outer Courtyard

17 And he brought me to the outer courtyard, and there were chambers and a pavement made for the courtyard all around it, and thirty chambers were facing to the pavement. 18 And the pavement flanked[cu] the side of the gates and all along the gates;[cv] this describes the lower pavement. 19 And he measured the width from the front of[cw] the lower gate to the front of[cx] the outside of the inner courtyard as a hundred cubits[cy] to the east and to the north.

Measurement of the North Gate

20 And as for the gate that had its face toward the north[cz] of the outer courtyard, he measured its length and its width. 21 And its alcoves were three on each side,[da] and its pilasters and its porticos had the same measurement[db] as the first gate: its length was fifty cubits,[dc] and its width was twenty-five cubits.[dd] 22 And its windows and its porticos and its palm tree images were like the measurement of the gate that was facing toward the east;[de] and it had[df] seven steps that go up it, and there were porticos before them.[dg] 23 And a gate led to the inner courtyard, opposite the gate to the north and to the east, and he measured from gate to gate as a hundred cubits.[dh]

The Gate to the South

24 And then he took me toward the south,[di] and look, a gate toward the south,[dj] and he measured its pilasters and its porticos; they had measurements just like the others.[dk] 25 And there were for it windows and for its porticos all the way around it[dl] like these windows; fifty cubits[dm] long and twenty-five cubits[dn] wide. 26 And seven steps were going up to it and its porticos before them.[do] And it had palm tree images[dp] all along[dq] its pilasters. 27 And there was to the way of the south[dr] a gate for the inner courtyard, and he measured from gate to the gate on the way of the south, a hundred cubits.[ds]

James 2:18-3

18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.”[a] Show me your faith apart from your[b] works, and I will show you my[c] faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe, and shudder! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he[d] offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working together with his works, and by the works the faith was perfected. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness,”[e] and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And likewise was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she[f] welcomed the messengers and sent them out by a different route? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

Restraining the Tongue

Not many should become teachers, my brothers, because you[g] know that we will receive a greater judgment.[h] For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual,[i] able to hold in check his whole body also. And if we put bits in the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we also guide their whole bodies. Behold also ships: although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot wishes. So also the tongue is a small member of the body[j] and boasts great things. Behold how small a fire sets ablaze how great a forest! And the tongue is a fire! The world of unrighteousness,[k] the tongue, is set among our members, defiling the whole body and setting on fire the course of human existence[l], being set on fire by hell.

For every species of animals and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures, is being tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no human being is able to tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the[m] Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so! 11 A spring does not pour forth from the same opening fresh and bitter water, does it?[n] 12 A fig tree is not able, my brothers, to produce olives, or a grapevine figs. Neither can a saltwater spring produce fresh water.

The Wisdom That Comes Down from Above

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his[o] good behavior his works, with the humility of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and tell lies against the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, obedient, full of mercy and good fruits, nonjudgmental, without hypocrisy, 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace among[p] those who make peace.

Psalm 118:1-18

Praise to God for His Loyal Love

118 Give thanks to Yahweh for he is good,
for his loyal love is forever.
Let Israel say,
“His loyal love is forever.”
Let the house of Aaron say,
“His loyal love is forever.”
Let those who fear Yahweh say,
“His loyal love is forever.”
Out of my distress I called to Yah.[a]
Yah answered me, setting me in a broad place.
Yahweh is for me; I do not fear.
What can mere humans[b] do to me?
Yahweh is for me as my helper,
and so I will look in triumph on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in Yahweh
than to trust in humans.[c]
It is better to take refuge in Yahweh
than to trust princes.
10 All nations surrounded me.
In the name of Yahweh I opposed them indeed.
11 They surrounded me; yes, they surrounded me.
In the name of Yahweh I opposed them indeed.
12 They surrounded me like bees;
they were extinguished like a fire of thorns.
In the name of Yahweh I opposed them indeed.
13 You pushed me hard[d] to make me fall,
but Yahweh helped me.
14 Yah[e] is my strength and my song,[f]
and he has become my salvation.[g]
15 The sound of rejoicing and salvation[h]
is in the tents of the righteous;
the right hand of Yahweh has done valiantly.
16 The right hand of Yahweh has exalted;
the right hand of Yahweh has done valiantly.
17 I will not die but live,
and tell of the works of Yah.[i]
18 Yah has disciplined me severely,
but he did not consign[j] me to death.

Proverbs 28:2

By the rebellion of a land, her rulers increase,
but by a person of intelligence who knows justice, it will last.
