Exodus 17:8-19:15

Miraculous Battle against Amalek

Then (A)Amalek came and fought against Israel at (B)Rephidim. So Moses said to (C)Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with (D)the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did just as Moses [a]told him, [b]and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and (E)Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 So it came about, when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed; but when he let his hand [c]down, Amalek prevailed. 12 And Moses’ hands were heavy. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur (F)supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. So his hands were steady until the sun set. 13 And Joshua [d]defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(G)Write this in [e]a book as a memorial and [f]recite it to Joshua, [g]that (H)I will utterly wipe out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an (I)altar and named it (J)The Lord is My Banner; 16 and he said, “[h](K)Because the Lord has sworn, the Lord will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”

Jethro, Moses’ Father-in-law

18 Now (L)Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard about everything that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people, how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took in Moses’ wife (M)Zipporah, after he had sent her away, and her (N)two sons, [i]one of whom was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have been (O)a stranger in a foreign land.” And [j]the other was named [k](P)Eliezer, for he said, “(Q)The God of my father was my help, and saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses [l]in the wilderness where he was camped, at (R)the mountain of God. And he [m]sent word to Moses: “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.” Then Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and (S)he bowed down and (T)kissed him; and they (U)asked each other about their welfare, and went into the tent. Moses told his father-in-law everything that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians (V)for Israel’s sake, all the (W)hardship that had confronted them on the journey, and how (X)the Lord had rescued them. And Jethro rejoiced over all (Y)the goodness which the Lord had done for Israel, [n]in rescuing [o]them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 So Jethro said, “(Z)Blessed be the Lord who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that (AA)the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, [p](AB)it was proven when they acted insolently against [q]the people.” 12 (AC)Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat [r]a meal with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

Jethro Counsels Moses

13 And it came about the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood before Moses from the morning until the evening. 14 Now when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?” 15 Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me (AD)to inquire of God. 16 When they have a [s](AE)dispute, it comes to me, and I judge between someone and his neighbor and make known the statutes of God and His laws.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law then said to him, “The thing that you are doing is not good. 18 (AF)You will surely wear out, both yourself and [t]these people who are with you, because the [u]task is too heavy for you; (AG)you cannot do it alone. 19 Now listen to [v]me: I will give you counsel, and God be with you. [w]You be the people’s representative before God, and you (AH)bring the [x]disputes to God, 20 (AI)then admonish them about the statutes and the laws, and make known to them (AJ)the way in which they are to walk and the work they are to do. 21 Furthermore, you shall [y]select out of all the people (AK)able men (AL)who fear God, men of truth, those who (AM)hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, [z]of hundreds, [aa]of fifties, and [ab]of tens. 22 Let them judge the people at all times; and let it be (AN)that they will bring to you every major matter, but they will judge every minor matter themselves. So it will be easier for you, and (AO)they will carry the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing and God so commands you, then you will be able to [ac]endure, and all [ad]these people also will go to [ae]their places in peace.”

24 So Moses listened [af]to his father-in-law and did everything that he had said. 25 Moses chose (AP)able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, [ag]of hundreds, [ah]of fifties, and [ai]of tens. 26 Then they judged the people at all times; (AQ)they would bring the difficult matter to Moses, but they would judge every minor matter themselves. 27 Then Moses [aj](AR)said goodbye to his father-in-law, and [ak]Jethro went his way to his own land.

Moses on Sinai

19 (AS)In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, [al]on that very day they came into the wilderness of (AT)Sinai. When they set out from (AU)Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of (AV)the mountain. And Moses went up to God, and (AW)the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: (AX)You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on (AY)eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself. Now then, (AZ)if you will indeed obey My voice and (BA)keep My covenant, then you shall be (BB)My [am]own possession among all the peoples, for (BC)all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me (BD)a kingdom of priests and (BE)a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”

(BF)So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him. Then (BG)all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in (BH)a thick cloud, so that the (BI)people may hear when I speak with you and may also trust in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.

10 The Lord also said to Moses, “Go to the people and (BJ)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and have them (BK)wash their garments; 11 and have them ready for the third day, for on (BL)the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 But you shall set boundaries for the people all around, saying, ‘[an]Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; (BM)whoever touches the mountain shall certainly be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but (BN)he shall certainly be stoned or [ao]shot through; whether animal or person, the violator shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to (BO)the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. 15 He also said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”

Matthew 22:34-23:12

34 (A)But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced (B)the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, [a](C)a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him: 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘(D)You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and [b]foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘(E)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 (F)Upon these two commandments [c]hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”

41 (G)Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: 42 “What do you think about the [d]Christ? Whose son is He?” They *said to Him, “(H)The son of David.” 43 He *said to them, “Then [e]how does David [f](I)in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,

44 (J)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
Until I put Your enemies under Your feet”’?

45 Therefore, if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ [g]how is He his son?” 46 (K)No one was able to offer Him a word in answer, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him any more questions.

Hypocrisy Exposed

23 (L)Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: (M)The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses. Therefore, whatever they tell you, do and [h]comply with it all, but do not do [i]as they do; for they say things and do not do them. And (N)they tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as their finger. And they do all their deeds (O)to be noticed by other people; for they (P)broaden their [j]phylacteries and lengthen (Q)the tassels of their garments. And they (R)love the place of honor at banquets, and the seats of honor in the synagogues, and personal greetings in the marketplaces, and being called [k](S)Rabbi by the people. But as for you, (T)do not be called [l](U)Rabbi; for only One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters. And do not call anyone on earth your father; for only (V)One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called [m]leaders; for only One is your Leader, that is, Christ. 11 (W)But the greatest of you shall be your servant. 12 (X)Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Psalm 27:7-14

(A)Hear, Lord, when I cry with my voice,
And be gracious to me and (B)answer me.
When You said, “(C)Seek My face,” my heart said to You,
(D)I shall seek Your face, Lord.”
(E)Do not hide Your face from me,
Do not turn Your servant away in (F)anger;
You have been (G)my help;
(H)Do not abandon me nor (I)forsake me,
God of my salvation!
10 [a]For my father and (J)my mother have forsaken me,
But (K)the Lord will take me up.

11 (L)Teach me Your way, Lord,
And lead me on a (M)level path
Because of my enemies.
12 Do not turn me over to the [b](N)desire of my enemies,
For (O)false witnesses have risen against me,
And the violent (P)witness.
13 I certainly believed that I would see the (Q)goodness of the Lord
In the (R)land of the living.
14 (S)Wait for the Lord;
Be (T)strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.

Proverbs 6:27-35

27 Can anyone take fire in his lap
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Or can a person walk on hot coals
And his feet not be scorched?
29 So is the one who (A)goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her (B)will not [a]go unpunished.
30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
To (C)satisfy [b]himself when he is hungry;
31 But when he is found, he must (D)repay seven times as much;
He must give up all the property of his house.
32 One who commits adultery with a woman is (E)lacking [c]sense;
He who would (F)destroy [d]himself commits it.
33 He will find wounds and disgrace,
And his shame will not be removed.
34 For (G)jealousy [e]enrages a man,
And he will not have compassion on the (H)day of vengeance.
35 He will not [f]accept any settlement,
Nor will he be [g]satisfied though you make it a large gift.
