Numbers 6-7

The Nazirite Vow

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: When either a man or woman will make a hard vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate themselves to the Lord, he will separate himself from wine and strong drink and will drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink. Neither shall he drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh or dry grapes. All the days of his separation he will eat nothing that is made of the grapevine, from the seed to the skin.

All the days of the vow of his separation no razor will come on his head until the days are fulfilled in which he separates himself to the Lord. He will be holy and will let the locks of the hair of his head grow. All the days that he separates himself to the Lord he will not approach a dead body. He will not defile himself for his father or for his mother, for his brother or for his sister if they die because the separation of his God is on his head. All the days of his separation he is holy to the Lord.

If any man dies very suddenly beside him, and he has defiled his consecrated head, then he will shave his head in the day of his cleansing, on the seventh day will he shave it. 10 On the eighth day he will bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest, to the door of the tent of meeting. 11 And the priest will offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering and make an atonement for him, since he sinned because of the dead, and will sanctify his head that same day. 12 He will consecrate to the Lord the days of his separation and bring a male lamb in its first year as a guilt offering. But the previous days will be lost because his separation was defiled.

13 This is the law of the Nazirite. When the days of his separation are fulfilled, he will be brought to the door of the tent of meeting. 14 And he will offer his offering to the Lord, one male lamb a year old without blemish as a burnt offering, one ewe lamb a year old without blemish as a sin offering, one ram without blemish as a peace offering, 15 a basket of unleavened bread, loaves of fine flour mixed with oil, unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and their grain offering with their drink offerings.

16 The priest will bring them before the Lord and will offer his sin offering and his burnt offering. 17 And he will offer the ram as a sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord with the basket of unleavened bread. The priest will offer also his grain offering and his drink offering.

18 The Nazirite will shave his consecrated head at the door of the tent of meeting, and will take the hair from his consecrated head and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings.

19 The priest will take the cooked shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer and will put them on the hands of the Nazirite, after he has shaved his consecrated hair. 20 And the priest will wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. This is holy for the priest, with the breast waved and the shoulder offered. And after that the Nazirite may drink wine.

21 This is the law of the Nazirite who has vowed to the Lord, his offering for his separation, besides whatever else his hand is able to provide. According to the vow which he spoke, so he must do, according to the law of his separation.

The Priestly Blessing

22 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 23 Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is how you will bless the children of Israel, saying to them,

24 The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
25 the Lord make His face to shine upon you,
    and be gracious unto you;
26 the Lord lift His countenance upon you,
    and give you peace.

27 They will put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

Offerings at the Tabernacle’s Dedication

And it was on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle and anointed it and sanctified it and all its instruments, both the altar and all its vessels, and anointed them, and sanctified them, that the leaders of Israel, heads of their fathers’ houses, who were the leaders of the tribes, and were over them who were counted, made an offering. And they brought their offering before the Lord, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen, a wagon for two of the leaders, and for each one an ox. And they brought them before the tabernacle.

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Accept these things from them, that they may be used in the service of the tent of meeting. Give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service.

Moses took the wagons and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. Two wagons and four oxen he gave to the sons of Gershon, according to their service. And four wagons and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. But to the sons of Kohath he gave none because the service of the sanctuary belonging to them was that they should carry on their shoulders.

Mark 12:38-13:13

The Denouncing of the Scribes(A)

38 He said to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who love to go about in long robes and love greetings in the marketplaces, 39 and the prominent seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive greater condemnation.”

The Widow’s Offering(B)

41 Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. Many who were rich put in much. 42 But a certain poor widow came and put in two mites, which make a farthing.[a]

43 He called His disciples to Him and said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 They all contributed out of their abundance. But she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had, her entire livelihood.”

The Destruction of the Temple Foretold(C)

13 As He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what great stones and what great buildings are here.”

Jesus answered him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”

Troubles and Persecutions(D)

As He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?”

Jesus answered them, “Take heed lest anyone deceive you. Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled. For such things must happen, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginning of sorrows.

“But take heed. For they will hand you over to councils, and in the synagogues you will be beaten. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 But when they arrest you and hand you over, take no thought beforehand, or premeditate what you should speak. But speak whatever is given you in that time, for it is not you who speaks, but the Holy Spirit.

12 “Now a brother will betray his brother to death, and the father the son; children will rise up against their parents, and will cause them to be put to death. 13 You will be hated by all men for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

Psalm 49

Psalm 49

For the Music Director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

Hear this, all you people;
    give ear, all you inhabitants of the world,
both low and high,
    rich and poor together.
My mouth will speak wisdom,
    and the meditation of my heart will be understanding.
I will incline my ear to a parable;
    I will expound my riddle with a harp.

Why should I fear in the days of evil,
    when the iniquity of my stalkers surrounds me?
Those who trust in their wealth,
    and boast in the multitude of their riches,
none of them can by any means redeem the other,
    nor give to God a ransom for anyone,
for the redemption of their souls is costly;
    even so people cease to exist forever,
making efforts to live eternally,
    and not see the pit.
10 For one sees that wise men die,
    together the fool and the brute perish,
    and leave their wealth to others.
11 Their graves become their perpetual homes,
    and their dwelling places to all generations,
    though they call their lands after their own names.

12 But a man does not abide in honor;
    mankind is like the beasts that come to ruin.

13 This is their way, it is their folly;
    yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah
14 Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol;
    Death shall be their shepherd;
the upright shall rule over them in the morning,
    and their form shall waste away in Sheol,
    far from their dwelling.
15 But God shall redeem my soul from the power of Sheol,
    for He shall receive me. Selah
16 Do not fear when one is made rich,
    when the glory of his house is increased,
17 for he takes nothing away in death;
    his glory does not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives he blesses his soul—
    and men will praise you when you do well for yourself—
19 that soul will go to the generation of his fathers;
    they will never see light.

20 A man in honor, and yet without understanding,
    is like the animals that perish.

Proverbs 10:27-28

27 The fear of the Lord prolongs days,
    but the years of the wicked will be shortened.

28 The hope of the righteous will be gladness,
    but the expectation of the wicked will perish.
