Chronological
Thanksgiving and Prayer
1 (A)Paul, (B)an apostle of Christ Jesus [a](C)by the will of God, and (D)Timothy [b]our brother,
2 To the [c](E)saints and faithful brothers in Christ in Colossae: (F)Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
3 (G)We give thanks to God, (H)the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 (I)since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the (J)love which you have [d]for (K)all the [e]saints, 5 because of the (L)hope (M)laid up for you in [f]heaven, of which you previously (N)heard in the word of truth, [g]the gospel 6 which has come to you, just as [h](O)in all the world also it is constantly bearing (P)fruit and [i]multiplying, just as it has been doing in you also since the day you (Q)heard and [j]understood the grace of God in truth; 7 just as you learned it from (R)Epaphras, our (S)beloved fellow slave, who is a faithful servant of Christ on our behalf, 8 who also informed us of your (T)love in the Spirit.
9 For this reason also, (U)since the day we heard, (V)we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the [k](W)full knowledge of His will in all spiritual (X)wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you may (Y)walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, [l](Z)to please Him in all respects, (AA)bearing fruit in every good work and [m]multiplying in the [n]full knowledge of God; 11 (AB)being strengthened with all power, according to [o]His glorious might, [p]for the attaining of all steadfastness and [q]patience; (AC)joyously 12 giving thanks to (AD)the Father, who has qualified us [r]to share in (AE)the inheritance of the [s]saints in (AF)light. 13 Who rescued us from the (AG)authority of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of (AH)the Son of His love, 14 (AI)in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The Firstborn of All Creation
15 [t]Who is the (AJ)image of the (AK)invisible God, the (AL)firstborn of all creation.
16 For [u](AM)in Him all things were created, (AN)both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether (AO)thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—(AP)all things have been created through Him and for Him.
17 And He [v](AQ)is before all things,
And in Him all things [w]hold together.
18 And He is the (AR)head of (AS)the body, the church;
Who is (AT)the beginning, (AU)the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.
19 For in Him [x]all (AV)the fullness of God (AW)was pleased to dwell,
20 And through Him to (AX)reconcile all things to Himself, having made (AY)peace through (AZ)the blood of His cross—through Him—(BA)whether things on earth or things in [y]heaven.
21 And although you were (BB)formerly alienated and enemies in mind and in evil deeds, 22 but now He (BC)reconciled you in the (BD)body of His flesh through death, in order to (BE)present you before Him (BF)holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in [z]the faith firmly (BG)grounded and steadfast, and not moved away from the (BH)hope of the gospel, which you have heard, which was proclaimed (BI)in all creation under heaven, (BJ)and of which I, Paul, [aa]was made a [ab](BK)minister.
24 (BL)Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and (BM)I fill up what is lacking of Christ’s afflictions in my flesh, on behalf of (BN)His body, which is the church, 25 (BO)of which I [ac]was made a minister according to the (BP)stewardship from God given to me for you, so that I might [ad]fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, 26 that is, (BQ)the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His [ae]saints, 27 to whom (BR)God willed to make known what is (BS)the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is (BT)Christ in you, the (BU)hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, (BV)admonishing every man and teaching every man [af]with all (BW)wisdom, so that we may (BX)present every man [ag](BY)complete in Christ. 29 For this purpose I also (BZ)labor, (CA)striving (CB)according to His working, which He works in me in power.
Alive with Christ
2 For I want you to understand how great a (CC)struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at (CD)Laodicea, and for all those who have not seen my face in the flesh, 2 so that their (CE)hearts may be encouraged, having been (CF)held together in love, even unto all (CG)the wealth of the full assurance of understanding, unto the (CH)full knowledge of (CI)God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, 3 in whom are hidden all (CJ)the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 (CK)I say this so that no one will delude you with (CL)persuasive argument. 5 For even though I am (CM)absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing [ah]to see your (CN)good order and the (CO)stability of your faith in Christ.
6 Therefore as you received (CP)Christ Jesus the Lord, so [ai](CQ)walk in Him, 7 having been firmly (CR)rooted and being (CS)built up in Him, and having been (CT)established [aj]in your faith—just as you (CU)were instructed—and abounding [ak]with thanksgiving.
8 (CV)See to it that no one takes you captive through (CW)philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the (CX)elementary principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him all the (CY)fullness of Deity dwells bodily, 10 and in Him you have been (CZ)filled, (DA)who is the head [al]over all (DB)rule and authority; 11 in whom (DC)you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of (DD)the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been (DE)buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also (DF)raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who (DG)raised Him from the dead. 13 And you being (DH)dead [am]in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He (DI)made you alive with Him, having graciously forgiven us all our transgressions. 14 Having canceled out (DJ)the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us which was hostile to us, (DK)He also has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having [an](DL)disarmed the (DM)rulers and authorities, He (DN)made a public display of them, having (DO)triumphed over them in [ao]Him.
16 Therefore, no one is to (DP)judge you in (DQ)food and (DR)drink, or in respect to a (DS)festival or a (DT)new moon or a (DU)Sabbath [ap]day— 17 things which are only a (DV)shadow of what is to come; but the [aq]substance [ar]belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one keep [as](DW)defrauding you of your prize by (DX)delighting in [at]self-abasement and the worship of the angels, going into detail about visions he has seen, (DY)being puffed up for nothing by his (DZ)fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to (EA)the head, from whom (EB)the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and [au]ligaments, grows with a growth [av]that is from God.
20 (EC)If you have died with Christ [aw]to the (ED)elementary principles of the world, (EE)why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to (EF)decrees: 21 “Do not handle, nor taste, nor touch”? 22 Which [ax]deal with everything (EG)destined to perish [ay]with use, which are in accordance with the (EH)commands and teachings of men; 23 which are matters having, to be sure, a [az]word of wisdom in [ba](EI)self-made religion and self-abasement and (EJ)severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against (EK)fleshly indulgence.
Put On the New Man
3 Therefore, if you have been (EL)raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, (EM)seated at the right hand of God. 2 [bb](EN)Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you (EO)died and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, (EP)who is our life, is manifested, (EQ)then you also will be manifested with Him in glory.
5 (ER)Therefore, [bc]consider (ES)the members of your earthly body as dead to (ET)sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these things, (EU)the wrath of God is coming [bd]upon the sons of disobedience, 7 and (EV)in them you also once walked, when you were living [be]in them. 8 But now you also, (EW)lay them all aside: (EX)wrath, anger, malice, slander, and (EY)abusive speech from your mouth. 9 [bf](EZ)Do not lie to one another, since you (FA)put off the old man with its evil practices, 10 and have (FB)put on the new man who is being [bg](FC)renewed to a full knowledge (FD)according to the image of the One who (FE)created him— 11 a renewal in which (FF)there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, (FG)circumcised and uncircumcised, [bh](FH)barbarian, Scythian, (FI)slave, and freeman, but (FJ)Christ is all and in all.
12 So, as the (FK)elect of God, holy and beloved, (FL)put on a (FM)heart of compassion, kindness, (FN)humility, gentleness, and [bi](FO)patience; 13 (FP)bearing with one another, and (FQ)graciously forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone, (FR)just as the Lord graciously forgave you, so also should you. 14 Above all these things put on love, which is [bj](FS)the perfect bond of (FT)unity. 15 And let (FU)the peace of Christ [bk]rule in your hearts, to which [bl]indeed you were called in (FV)one body, and [bm]be thankful. 16 Let (FW)the word of [bn]Christ dwell in you richly, [bo]with all wisdom (FX)teaching and admonishing [bp]one another (FY)with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, (FZ)singing [bq]with gratefulness in your hearts to God. 17 (GA)And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, (GB)giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Family and Work
18 (GC)Wives, (GD)be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 (GE)Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. 20 (GF)Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is pleasing [br]to the Lord. 21 (GG)Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart.
22 (GH)Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters [bs]according to the flesh, (GI)not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but with [bt]integrity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, do your work [bu]heartily, (GJ)as for the Lord [bv]rather than for men, 24 (GK)knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward [bw]of (GL)the inheritance. [bx](GM)Serve the Lord Christ. 25 For (GN)he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and [by](GO)that without partiality.
Final Instructions and Greetings
4 Masters, show to your slaves what is right and fair, (GP)knowing that you too have a Master in heaven.
2 (GQ)Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; 3 praying at the same time (GR)for us as well, that God will open up to us a (GS)door for (GT)the word, so that we may speak (GU)the mystery of Christ, for which I have also (GV)been bound, 4 that I may make it (GW)manifest (GX)in the way I ought to speak.
5 (GY)Walk in wisdom toward (GZ)outsiders, (HA)redeeming the time. 6 (HB)Let your [bz]words always be [ca]with grace, seasoned with (HC)salt, so that you will know how you should (HD)answer each person.
7 (HE)Tychicus, our (HF)beloved brother and faithful servant and fellow slave in the Lord, will make known to you (HG)all my affairs, 8 (HH)whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that you may know about our circumstances and that he may (HI)encourage your hearts; 9 [cb]and with him (HJ)Onesimus, our faithful and (HK)beloved brother, (HL)who is one of you. They will inform you about the whole situation here.
10 (HM)Aristarchus, my (HN)fellow prisoner, sends you his greetings; and also Mark, the cousin of (HO)Barnabas (about whom you received [cc]instructions; (HP)if he comes to you, welcome him); 11 and also Jesus who is called Justus. These are the only (HQ)fellow workers for the kingdom of God (HR)who are from the circumcision, and they have proved to be a comfort to me. 12 (HS)Epaphras, (HT)who is one of your number, a slave of Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings, always (HU)striving for you in his prayers, that you may stand [cd](HV)complete and (HW)fully assured in all the will of God. 13 For I testify for him that he has [ce]a deep concern for you and for those who are in (HX)Laodicea and Hierapolis. 14 (HY)Luke, the beloved physician, sends you his greetings, and also (HZ)Demas. 15 Greet the brothers who are in (IA)Laodicea and also [cf]Nympha and (IB)the church that is in [cg]her house. 16 (IC)And when [ch]this letter is read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and you, for your part (ID)read [ci]my letter that is coming from (IE)Laodicea. 17 And say to (IF)Archippus, “Take heed to the (IG)ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may [cj]fulfill it.”
18 (IH)The greeting is in my own hand—[ck]Paul. (II)Remember my (IJ)chains. (IK)Grace be with you.
Philemon’s Love and Faith
1 (A)Paul, (B)a prisoner of (C)Christ Jesus, and (D)Timothy [a]our brother,
To Philemon our beloved brother and (E)fellow worker, 2 and to Apphia [b](F)our sister, and to (G)Archippus our (H)fellow soldier, and to (I)the church in your house: 3 (J)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 (K)I thank my God, always making mention of you in my prayers, 5 because I (L)hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the [c]saints; 6 and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective [d]through the (M)full knowledge of every good thing which is in you [e]for the sake of Christ. 7 For I have come to have much (N)joy and comfort in your love, because the [f]hearts of the [g]saints have been (O)refreshed through you, brother.
8 Therefore, (P)though I have much boldness in Christ to command you to do what is (Q)proper, 9 yet for love’s sake I rather (R)plead with you—since I am such a person as Paul, [h]the (S)aged, and now also (T)a prisoner of (U)Christ Jesus—
Plea for Onesimus
10 I (V)plead with you for my (W)child [i](X)Onesimus, of whom I became a [j]father in my chains, 11 who formerly was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me. 12 I have sent him back to you in person, that is, my very heart, 13 whom I intended to keep with me, so that on your behalf he might minister to me in my (Y)chains for the gospel, 14 but without your consent I did not want to do anything, so that your goodness would (Z)not be, in effect, by compulsion but voluntary. 15 For perhaps (AA)he was for this reason separated from you for a while, that you would have him back forever, 16 (AB)no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, (AC)a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both (AD)in the flesh and in the Lord.
17 If then you regard me a (AE)partner, accept him as you would accept me. 18 But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 (AF)I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand, I will repay it ((AG)not to [k]mention to you that you owe to me even your own self as well). 20 Yes, brother, let me benefit from you in the Lord. (AH)Refresh my heart in Christ!
21 (AI)Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, since I know that you will do even more than what I say.
22 And at the same time also prepare me a (AJ)lodging, for (AK)I hope that through (AL)your prayers (AM)I will be graciously given to you.
23 (AN)Epaphras, my (AO)fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, 24 as do (AP)Mark, (AQ)Aristarchus, (AR)Demas, (AS)Luke, my (AT)fellow workers.
25 (AU)The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be (AV)with your spirit.[l]
