Psalm 3-4

A Morning Prayer

David sang this when he ran away from his son Absalom [2 Sam. 15–19].

Lord, ·I have many enemies [L how many are my foes?]!
    ·Many people [L How many…?] have ·turned [L risen] against me.
Many are saying about me,
    “·God won’t rescue him [L There is no salvation for him in God].” ·Selah [Interlude]

But, Lord, you are my shield [C protector],
    my ·wonderful God [L glory] who ·gives me courage [L lifts up my head].
I will ·pray [L lift my voice] to the Lord,
    and he will answer me from his holy mountain [C Zion, the location of the Temple]. ·Selah [Interlude]

I can lie down and go to sleep,
    and I will wake up again,
    because the Lord ·gives me strength [sustains/upholds me].
Thousands of troops may ·surround me [L set themselves around me],
    but I am not afraid.

Lord, rise up!
    My God, come ·save [rescue; T deliver] me!
You have struck my enemies on the cheek;
    you have broken the teeth of the wicked.
·The Lord can save his people [L Salvation/Rescue/Deliverance belongs to the Lord].
    ·Bless your people [L May your blessing be on your people]. ·Selah [Interlude]

An Evening Prayer

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

Answer me when I ·pray [L call] to you,
    my God who ·does what is right [is righteous; or who vindicates me].
·Make things easier for me [Give me room; Widen my way] when I am in trouble.
    Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

People, how long will you turn my ·honor [glory] into shame?
    How long will you love what is ·false [empty] and ·look for [seek] lies [C possibly referring to false gods]? ·Selah [Interlude]
You know that the Lord has ·chosen [set apart; distinguished] for himself those who are loyal to him [C in covenant relationship with him].
    The Lord listens when I ·pray [call] to him.
When you ·are angry [are disturbed; L tremble], do not sin.
    ·Think about these things [Meditate; L Speak to your heart] quietly
    ·as you go to bed [L on your bed]. ·Selah [Interlude]
·Do what is right as a sacrifice to the Lord [L Sacrifice right/righteous sacrifices]
    and trust the Lord.

Many people ask,
    “Who will ·give us [L make us see] anything good?”
    Lord, ·be kind to us [L let the light of your face shine on us; Num. 6:24–26].
But you have ·made me very happy [L given joy to my heart],
    happier than they are,
    even with all their grain and new wine.
I ·go to bed [L lie down] and sleep in peace,
    because, Lord, only you ·keep me safe [make me secure].

Psalm 12-13

A Prayer Against Liars

For the director of music. Upon the ·sheminith [L eighth; C a reference to an eight-stringed instrument or possibly the manner of singing]. A psalm of David.

12 Save me, Lord, because the ·good [faithful; godly; covenantal; loyal] people are all gone;
    ·no true believers are left on earth [L the faithful have vanished among humanity].
Everyone ·lies [L speaks falsehood] to his neighbors;
    they ·say one thing and mean another [speak with flattering lips and with a double heart/L heart and heart].
The Lord will ·stop [L cut off] those flattering lips
    and those bragging tongues.
They say, “Our tongues will ·help us win [prevail].
    ·We can say what we wish [L Our lips belong to us]; ·no one [L who…?] is our master.”

But the Lord says,
    “I will now rise up,
    because the ·poor [weak] are ·being hurt [destroyed; plundered; oppressed].
Because of the ·moans [groans; sighs] of the ·helpless [needy],
    I will give them the ·help [victory] they ·want [long for].”
The Lord’s ·words [or promises] are ·pure [flawless],
    like silver ·purified [refined] ·by fire [or in a furnace],
·purified [refined] seven times over [18:30; 119:140].

Lord, you will ·keep us safe [L guard/protect them];
    you will always ·protect [guard] us from such ·people [a generation].
But the wicked ·are [L walk] all around us;
    ·everyone loves what is wrong [L what is vile is lifted up among the sons of man/humanity].

A Prayer for God to Be Near

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

13 How long will you forget me, Lord? Forever?
    How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I ·worry [or bear pain; L hold counsels]
    and ·feel sad [hold sorrow] in my heart all day?
How long will my enemy ·win [rise up] over me?

Lord, look at me.
    Answer me, my God;
    ·tell me [L light up my eyes], or I will ·die [L sleep the sleep of death].
Otherwise my enemy will say, “I have ·won [finished him off]!”
    ·Those against me [My foes] will rejoice that I’ve been ·defeated [shaken; moved].

I ·trust [have confidence] in your ·love [loyalty; covenant love].
    My heart ·is happy [rejoices] because ·you saved me [of your victory/salvation].
I sing to the Lord
    because he has ·taken care of [been good to] me.

Psalm 28

A Prayer in Troubled Times

Of David.

28 Lord, my Rock [C providing protection], I ·call out to you for help [pray].
    Do not be ·deaf [silent] to me.
If you are silent,
    I will be like those ·in the grave [L who go down to the Pit; 16:10].
Hear the sound of my ·prayer [supplication],
    when I cry out to you for help.
I raise my hands
    toward your Most Holy Place [C the place where God made his presence known, the sanctuary].
Don’t drag me away with the wicked,
    with those who do evil.
They say “Peace” to their neighbors,
    but evil is in their hearts.
Pay them back for what they have done,
    for their evil deeds.
Pay them back for ·what they have done [L the work of their hands];
    give them their reward.
They don’t understand what the Lord has done
    or ·what he has made [L the work of his hands].
So he will ·knock [tear] them down
    and not ·lift [L build] them up.

·Praise [L Blessed be] the Lord,
    because he heard ·my prayer for help [L the sound of my supplication].
The Lord is my strength [Ex. 15:2] and shield.
    ·I trust [My heart has confidence in] him, and he helps me.
·I am [L My heart is] very happy,
    and I ·praise [give thanks to] him with my song.
The Lord is powerful;
    he ·gives victory [is a saving refuge] to his ·chosen one [anointed].
·Save [L Give victory to] your people
    and bless ·those who are your own [L your inheritance].
Be their shepherd and carry them forever.

Psalm 55

A Prayer About a False Friend

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A ·maskil [skillful psalm; meditation] of David.

55 God, ·listen [L give ear] to my prayer
    and do not ·ignore [hide from] my ·cry for help [supplication].
Pay attention to me and answer me.
    ·I am troubled and [My cares give me no peace and I am] upset
by ·what the enemy says [L the voice/sound of my enemy]
    and ·how the wicked look at me [before the stares/or because of the afflictions of my enemy].
They bring troubles down on me,
    and in anger they ·attack [persecute; or hate] me.

·I am frightened inside [L My heart writhes inside me];
    the terror of death has ·attacked [L fallen on] me.
·I am scared and shaking [Fear and trembling come on me],
    and ·terror [shuddering] ·grips [overwhelms] me.
I said, “·I wish [O that] I had wings like a dove.
    Then I would fly away and rest.
I would ·wander [flee] far away
    and stay in the ·desert [wilderness]. ·Selah [Interlude]
I would hurry to my place of escape,
    far away from the raging wind and ·storm [tempest].”

Lord, ·destroy [or frustrate; or check; or confuse; L swallow] and ·confuse [confound; L divide] their ·words [speech; or plans; L tongues; Gen. 11:1–9],
    because I see violence and ·fighting [strife; contention; accusation] in the city.
10 Day and night they are all around its walls,
    and evil and trouble are everywhere inside.
11 Destruction is ·everywhere in the city [L in its midst];
    ·trouble [oppression] and ·lying [deception] never leave its ·streets [public square].

12 It was not an enemy ·insulting [scorning; reproaching] me.
    I could ·stand [bear] that.
It was not someone who hated me who insulted me.
    I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, a person like me,
    my companion and good friend.
14 We had ·a good friendship [sweet fellowship together]
    and walked ·together [or noisily; or quietly; or with the crowd] to God’s ·Temple [L house].

15 Let death ·take away [L rise up on] ·my enemies [L them].
    Let them ·die while they are still young [L go down to the grave/underworld/Sheol while they are living]
    because evil ·lives with them [L is their home within them].
16 But I will call to God for help,
    and the Lord will ·save me [give me victory].
17 Morning, noon, and ·night [L evening] I ·am troubled and upset [sigh and moan],
    but he will listen to ·me [L my voice].
18 Many are against me,
    but he ·keeps me safe [L redeems/ransoms me whole/in peace] in battle.
19 God who ·lives forever [or is enthroned from of old]
    will hear me and ·punish [L humble] them. ·Selah [Interlude]

But they will not change;
they do not fear God [Prov. 1:7].

20 ·The one who was my friend attacks his friends [L He sends his hand against his friend]
    and ·breaks [violates; profanes] his ·promises [covenant; treaty].
21 His words are ·slippery like [L smoother than] butter,
    but war is in his heart.
His words are ·smoother [softer] than oil,
    but they cut like ·knives [unsheathed swords; Prov. 5:3–4].

22 ·Give [L Cast; Throw] your ·worries [burden; L that which he has given you] to the Lord,
    and he will ·take care of [sustain] you.
    He will never let ·good [righteous] people ·down [L be moved].
23 But, God, you will bring down
    the wicked to the ·grave [deepest pit; L pit of corruption].
Murderers and ·liars [deceivers] will ·live
    only half a lifetime [L not live half their days].
But I will ·trust [have confidence] in you.
