³ While I kept silent, my body wasted away
    through my groaning all day long.^(C)
4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
    my strength was dried up^[a] as by the heat of summer. Selah^(D)

⁵ Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
    and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah^(E)

⁶ Therefore let all who are faithful
    offer prayer to you;
at a time of distress,^[b] the rush of mighty waters
    shall not reach them.^(F)
7 You are a hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from trouble;
    you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. Selah^(G)

⁸ I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my eye upon you.^(H)
9 Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle,
    else it will not stay near you.^(I)

¹⁰ Many are the torments of the wicked,
    but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.^(J)
11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous,
    and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.^(K)

³ For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is ever before me.^(C)
4 Against you, you alone, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are justified in your sentence
    and blameless when you pass judgment.^(D)
5 Indeed, I was born guilty,
    a sinner when my mother conceived me.^(E)

⁶ You desire truth in the inward being;^[a]
    therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.^(F)
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
    wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.^(G)
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
    let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.^(H)
9 Hide your face from my sins,
    and blot out all my iniquities.^(I)

¹⁰ Create in me a clean heart, O God,
    and put a new and right^[b] spirit within me.^(J)
11 Do not cast me away from your presence,
    and do not take your holy spirit from me.^(K)
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
    and sustain in me a willing^[c] spirit.^(L)

¹³ Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
    and sinners will return to you.^(M)
14 Deliver me from bloodshed, O God,
    O God of my salvation,
    and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance.^(N)

¹⁵ O Lord, open my lips,
    and my mouth will declare your praise.^(O)
16 For you have no delight in sacrifice;
    if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased.^(P)
17 The sacrifice acceptable to God^[d] is a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.^(Q)

¹⁸ Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
    rebuild the walls of Jerusalem;^(R)
19 then you will delight in right sacrifices,
    in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
    then bulls will be offered on your altar.^(S)

⁸ There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
    nor are there any works like yours.^(H)
9 All the nations you have made shall come
    and bow down before you, O Lord,
    and shall glorify your name.^(I)
10 For you are great and do wondrous things;
    you alone are God.^(J)
11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may walk in your truth;
    give me an undivided heart to revere your name.^(K)
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
    and I will glorify your name forever.
¹³ For great is your steadfast love toward me;
    you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.^(L)

¹⁴ O God, the insolent rise up against me;
    a band of ruffians seeks my life,
    and they do not set you before them.^(M)
15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.^(N)
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me;
    give your strength to your servant;
    save the child of your maidservant.^(O)
17 Show me a sign of your favor,
    so that those who hate me may see it and be put to shame,
    because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.^(P)

³ Jerusalem—built as a city
    that is bound firmly together.^(B)
4 To it the tribes go up,
    the tribes of the Lord,
as was decreed for Israel,
    to give thanks to the name of the Lord.^(C)
5 For there the thrones for judgment were set up,
    the thrones of the house of David.^(D)

⁶ Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
    “May they prosper who love you.^(E)
7 Peace be within your walls
    and security within your towers.”
⁸ For the sake of my relatives and friends
    I will say, “Peace be within you.”
⁹ For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
    I will seek your good.^(F)
