Chronological
Prayer for Mercy in Time of Trouble.
For the choir director; with stringed instruments, [a]upon an eight-string lyre. A Psalm of David.
6 O Lord, (A)do not rebuke me in Your anger,
Nor chasten me in Your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am (B)pining away;
(C)Heal me, O Lord, for (D)my bones are dismayed.
3 And my (E)soul is greatly dismayed;
But You, O Lord—(F)how long?
4 Return, O Lord, (G)rescue my [b]soul;
Save me because of Your lovingkindness.
5 For (H)there is no [c]mention of You in death;
In [d]Sheol who will give You thanks?
The Lord’s Glory and Man’s Dignity.
For the choir director; on the Gittith. A Psalm of David.
8 O Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth,
Who have [a](A)displayed Your splendor above the heavens!
2 (B)From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established [b](C)strength
Because of Your adversaries,
To make (D)the enemy and the revengeful cease.
3 When I [c](E)consider (F)Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The (G)moon and the stars, which You have [d]ordained;
4 (H)What is man that You [e]take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
5 Yet You have made him a (I)little lower than [f]God,
And (J)You crown him with (K)glory and majesty!
6 You make him to (L)rule over the works of Your hands;
You have (M)put all things under his feet,
7 All sheep and oxen,
And also the [g]beasts of the field,
8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
9 (N)O Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
A Psalm of Thanksgiving for God’s Justice.
For the choir director; on [h]Muth-labben. A Psalm of David.
9 I will give thanks to the Lord with all (O)my heart;
I will (P)tell of all Your [i]wonders.
2 I will be glad and (Q)exult in You;
I will (R)sing praise to Your name, O (S)Most High.
3 When my enemies turn back,
They stumble and (T)perish before You.
4 For You have (U)maintained [j]my just cause;
You have sat on the throne [k](V)judging righteously.
5 You have (W)rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked;
You have (X)blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 [l]The enemy has come to an end in perpetual ruins,
And You have uprooted the cities;
The very (Y)memory of them has perished.
7 But the (Z)Lord [m]abides forever;
He has established His (AA)throne for judgment,
8 And He will (AB)judge the world in righteousness;
He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.
9 [n]The Lord also will be a (AC)stronghold for the oppressed,
A stronghold in times of trouble;
10 And [o]those who (AD)know Your name will put their trust in You,
For You, O Lord, have not (AE)forsaken those who seek You.
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who (AF)dwells in Zion;
(AG)Declare among the peoples His deeds.
12 For (AH)He who [p]requires blood remembers them;
He does not forget (AI)the cry of the afflicted.
13 Be gracious to me, O Lord;
See my affliction from those (AJ)who hate me,
You who (AK)lift me up from the gates of death,
14 That I may tell of (AL)all Your praises,
That in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may (AM)rejoice in Your [q]salvation.
15 The nations have sunk down (AN)in the pit which they have made;
In the (AO)net which they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 The Lord has (AP)made Himself known;
He has (AQ)executed judgment.
In the work of his own hands the wicked is snared. [r]Higgaion [s]Selah.
17 The wicked will [t](AR)return to [u]Sheol,
Even all the nations who (AS)forget God.
18 For the (AT)needy will not always be forgotten,
Nor the (AU)hope of the afflicted perish forever.
19 (AV)Arise, O Lord, do not let man prevail;
Let the nations be (AW)judged before You.
20 Put them (AX)in fear, O Lord;
Let the nations know that they are (AY)but men. Selah.
A Prayer for the Overthrow of the Wicked.
10 Why (AZ)do You stand afar off, O Lord?
Why (BA)do You hide [v]Yourself in times of trouble?
2 In (BB)pride the wicked [w]hotly pursue the afflicted;
[x]Let them be (BC)caught in the plots which they have devised.
3 For the wicked (BD)boasts of his (BE)heart’s desire,
And [y]the greedy man curses and (BF)spurns the Lord.
4 The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, (BG)does not seek Him.
All his [z]thoughts are, “(BH)There is no God.”
5 His ways [aa](BI)prosper at all times;
Your judgments are on high, (BJ)out of his sight;
As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.
6 He says to himself, “(BK)I will not be moved;
[ab]Throughout all generations (BL)I will not be in adversity.”
7 His (BM)mouth is full of curses and deceit and (BN)oppression;
(BO)Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
8 He sits in the (BP)lurking places of the villages;
In the hiding places he (BQ)kills the innocent;
His eyes [ac]stealthily watch for the [ad](BR)unfortunate.
9 He lurks in a hiding place as (BS)a lion in his [ae]lair;
He (BT)lurks to catch (BU)the afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his (BV)net.
10 He [af]crouches, he [ag]bows down,
And the [ah]unfortunate fall [ai]by his mighty ones.
11 He (BW)says to himself, “God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it.”
12 Arise, O Lord; O God, (BX)lift up Your hand.
(BY)Do not forget the afflicted.
13 Why has the wicked (BZ)spurned God?
He has said to himself, “You will not require it.”
14 You have seen it, for You have beheld (CA)mischief and vexation to [aj]take it into Your hand.
The [ak](CB)unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the (CC)helper of the orphan.
15 (CD)Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
[al](CE)Seek out his wickedness until You find none.
16 The Lord is (CF)King forever and ever;
(CG)Nations have perished from His land.
17 O Lord, You have heard the (CH)desire of the [am]humble;
You will (CI)strengthen their heart, (CJ)You will incline Your ear
18 To [an]vindicate the (CK)orphan and the (CL)oppressed,
So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause (CM)terror.
Folly and Wickedness of Men.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
14 The fool has (A)said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they have committed abominable [a]deeds;
There is (B)no one who does good.
2 The Lord has (C)looked down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there are any who [b](D)understand,
Who (E)seek after God.
3 They have all (F)turned aside, together they have become corrupt;
There is (G)no one who does good, not even one.
The Lord the Psalmist’s Portion in Life and Deliverer in Death.
A [a]Mikhtam of David.
16 (A)Preserve me, O God, for (B)I take refuge in You.
2 [b]I said to the Lord, “You are [c]my Lord;
I (C)have no good besides You.”
3 As for the [d](D)saints who are in the earth,
[e]They are the majestic ones (E)in whom is all my delight.
4 The [f](F)sorrows of those who have [g]bartered for another god will be multiplied;
I shall not pour out their drink offerings of (G)blood,
Nor will I (H)take their names upon my lips.
5 The Lord is the (I)portion of my inheritance and my (J)cup;
You support my (K)lot.
6 The (L)lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my heritage is (M)beautiful to me.
7 I will bless the Lord who has (N)counseled me;
Indeed, my [h](O)mind instructs me in the night.
8 (P)I have (Q)set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is (R)at my right hand, (S)I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore (T)my heart is glad and (U)my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will (V)dwell securely.
10 For You (W)will not abandon my soul to [i]Sheol;
Nor will You [j](X)allow Your [k]Holy One to [l]undergo decay.
11 You will make known to me (Y)the path of life;
In (Z)Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are (AA)pleasures forever.
The Works and the Word of God.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
19 The (A)heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their (B)expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
2 Day to (C)day pours forth speech,
And (D)night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
4 Their [a](E)line has gone out through all the earth,
And their utterances to the end of the world.
In them He has (F)placed a tent for the sun,
5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber;
It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.
6 Its (G)rising is from [b]one end of the heavens,
And its circuit to the [c]other end of them;
And there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7 (H)The law of the Lord is [d](I)perfect, (J)restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is (K)sure, making (L)wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are (M)right, (N)rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is (O)pure, (P)enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are (Q)true; they are (R)righteous altogether.
10 They are more desirable than (S)gold, yes, than much fine gold;
(T)Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them (U)Your servant is warned;
In keeping them there is great (V)reward.
12 Who can (W)discern his errors? (X)Acquit me of (Y)hidden faults.
13 Also keep back Your servant (Z)from presumptuous sins;
Let them not (AA)rule over me;
Then I will be [e](AB)blameless,
And I shall be acquitted of (AC)great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and (AD)the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, (AE)my rock and my (AF)Redeemer.
Praise for Deliverance.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
21 O Lord, in Your strength the king will (A)be glad,
And in Your [a]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
2 You have (B)given him his heart’s desire,
And You have not withheld the request of his lips. [b]Selah.
3 For You (C)meet him with the blessings of good things;
You set a (D)crown of fine gold on his head.
4 He asked life of You,
You (E)gave it to him,
(F)Length of days forever and ever.
5 His (G)glory is great through Your [c]salvation,
(H)Splendor and majesty You place upon him.
6 For You make him [d]most (I)blessed forever;
You make him joyful (J)with gladness in Your presence.
7 For the king (K)trusts in the Lord,
And through the lovingkindness of the Most High (L)he will not be shaken.
8 Your hand will (M)find out all your enemies;
Your right hand will find out those who hate you.
9 You will make them (N)as a fiery oven in the time [e]of your anger;
The Lord will (O)swallow them up in His wrath,
And (P)fire will devour them.
10 Their [f]offspring You will destroy from the earth,
And their [g](Q)descendants from among the sons of men.
11 Though they [h](R)intended evil against You
And (S)devised a plot,
They will not succeed.
12 For You will (T)make them turn their back;
You will [i]aim (U)with Your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength;
We will (V)sing and praise Your power.
