Jesus’ Appearance is Changed(A)

17 Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. His appearance was changed in front of them, his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus.[a]

Then Peter told Jesus, “Lord, it’s good that we’re here! If you want, I’ll set up three shelters[b]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when a bright cloud suddenly overshadowed them.

A voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him. Keep on listening to him!”

When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

But Jesus came up to them and touched them, saying, “Get up, and stop being afraid.” When they raised their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus all by himself.

On their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Don’t tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

10 So the disciples asked him, “Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

11 He answered them, “Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, yet people[c] did not recognize him and treated him just as they pleased. In the same way, the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he had been speaking to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon(B)

14 As they approached the crowd, a man came up to Jesus,[d] knelt down in front of him, 15 and said, “Sir,[e] have mercy on my son, because he is an epileptic and suffers terribly. Often he falls into fire and often into water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”

17 Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and perverted generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!” 18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed that very hour.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

20 He told them, “Because of your lack of faith.[f] I tell all of you[g] with certainty, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.”[h]

Jesus Again Predicts His Death and Resurrection(C)

22 While they were gathering together[i] in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands. 23 They will kill him, but he will be raised on the third day.” Then they were filled with grief.

Questions about the Temple Tax

24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax[j] came up to Peter and asked, “Your teacher pays the temple tax,[k] doesn’t he?”

25 He answered, “Yes.”

When Peter[l] went home,[m] Jesus spoke to him first and asked him, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings on the earth collect tolls or tributes? From their own subjects,[n] or from foreigners?”

26 “From foreigners,” he replied.

So Jesus told him, “In that case, the subjects[o] are exempt. 27 However, so that we don’t offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, open its mouth, and you will find a coin.[p] Take it and give it to them for me and you.”

Mark 9

Then he told them, “I tell all of you[a] with certainty, some people standing here will not experience[b] death until they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.”

Jesus’ Appearance is Changed(A)

Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain to be alone with him. His appearance was changed in front of them, and his clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone[c] on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them, accompanied by Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

Then Peter told Jesus, “Rabbi,[d] it’s good that we’re here! Let’s set up three shelters[e]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Peter[f] didn’t know how to respond, because they were terrified.)

Then a cloud appeared and overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud and said,[g] “This is my Son, whom I love. Keep on listening to him!” Suddenly, as they looked around, they saw no one with them but Jesus alone.

On their way down the mountain, Jesus[h] ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves but argued about what “rising from the dead” meant. 11 So they asked him, “Don’t the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

12 He told them, “Elijah is indeed coming first and will restore all things. Why, then, is it written that the Son of Man must suffer a great deal and be treated shamefully? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, yet people[i] treated him just as they pleased, as it is written about him.”

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon(B)

14 As they approached the other[j] disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and some scribes arguing with them. 15 The whole crowd was very surprised to see Jesus[k] and ran to welcome him.

16 He asked the scribes,[l] “What are you arguing about with them?”

17 A man in the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you. He has a spirit that won’t let him talk. 18 Whenever it brings on a seizure, it throws him to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes stiff. So I asked your disciples to drive the spirit[m] out, but they didn’t have the power.”

19 Jesus[n] told them, “You unbelieving generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me!”

20 So they brought the boy[o] to him. When the spirit saw Jesus,[p] it immediately threw the boy[q] into convulsions. He fell on the ground and kept rolling around and foaming at the mouth. 21 Then Jesus[r] asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” He said, “Since he was a child. 22 The spirit[s] has often thrown him into fire and into water to destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us!”

23 Jesus told him, “‘If you are able?’ Everything is possible for the person who believes!”

24 With tears flowing,[t] the child’s father at once cried out, “I do believe! Help my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You spirit that won’t let him talk or hear—I command you to come out of him and never enter him again!” 26 The spirit[u] screamed, shook the child[v] violently, and came out. The boy was like a corpse, and many said that he was dead. 27 But Jesus took his hand and helped him up, and he stood up.

28 When Jesus[w] came home, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive the spirit[x] out?”

29 He told them, “This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting.”[y]

Jesus Again Predicts His Death and Resurrection(C)

30 Then they left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus[z] didn’t want anyone to find out about it, 31 because he was teaching his disciples, “The Son of Man will be betrayed into human hands. They will kill him, but after being dead for three days he will be raised.” 32 They didn’t understand what this statement meant, and they were afraid to ask him.

True Greatness(D)

33 Then they came to Capernaum. While Jesus[aa] was at home, he asked the disciples,[ab] “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept silent, because they had argued on the road with one another about who was the greatest.

35 So he sat down, called the Twelve, and told them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 Then he took a little child and had him stand among them. He took him in his arms and told them, 37 “Whoever welcomes a child like this in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”

The True Follower of Jesus(E)

38 John told Jesus,[ac] “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn’t a follower like us.”

39 But Jesus said, “Don’t stop him, because no one who works a miracle in my name can slander me soon afterwards. 40 Whoever is not against us is for us. 41 I tell all of you[ad] with certainty, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to the Messiah[ae] will never lose his reward.”

Causing Others to Sin(F)

42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 So if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better for you to enter life injured than to have two hands and go to hell,[af] to the fire that cannot be put out. 44 In that place, worms never die, and the fire is never put out.[ag]

45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.[ah] 46 In that place, worms never die, and the fire is never put out.[ai]

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It’s better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell.[aj] 48 In that place, worms never die, and the fire is never put out.

49 Because everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.[ak] 50 Salt is good. But if salt loses its taste, how can you restore its flavor? Keep on having salt among yourselves, and live in peace with one another.”

Luke 9:28-62

Jesus’ Appearance is Changed(A)

28 Now about eight days after Jesus said this,[a] he took Peter, John, and James with him and went up on a mountain to pray. 29 While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes turned dazzling white. 30 Suddenly, two men were talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah. 31 They had a glorified appearance, and were discussing Jesus’[b] departure that he would shortly bring about in Jerusalem.

32 Now Peter and the men with him had been overcome by sleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus’[c] glory and the two men standing with him. 33 Just as Moses and Elijah[d] were leaving,[e] Peter told Jesus, “Master, it’s good that we’re here! Let’s set up three shelters[f]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Peter[g] didn’t know what he was saying.) 34 But while he was saying this, a cloud appeared and surrounded them, and they became terrified as they were being overshadowed by the cloud.

35 Then a voice came out of the cloud and said, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen.[h] Keep listening to him!” 36 After the voice had spoken, Jesus was[i] alone. The disciples[j] kept silent and at that time[k] told no one about what they had seen.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon(B)

37 The next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus.[l] 38 Suddenly, a man in the crowd shouted, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he is my only living child.[m] 39 Without warning a spirit takes control of him, and he suddenly screams, goes into convulsions, and foams at the mouth. The spirit[n] mauls him and refuses to leave him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”

41 Jesus answered, “You unbelieving and perverted generation! How much longer must I be with you[o] and put up with you?[p] Bring your[q] son here!” 42 Even while the boy[r] was coming, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

Jesus Again Predicts His Death and Resurrection(C)

43 All the people continued to be amazed at the greatness of God. Indeed, everyone was astonished at all the things Jesus[s] was doing. So he told his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to these words.[t] The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.” 45 But they didn’t know what this meant. Indeed, the meaning was hidden from them so that they didn’t understand it; and they were afraid to ask him about this statement.

True Greatness(D)

46 Later, an argument started among the disciples[u] as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he told them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, because the one who is least among all of you is the one who is greatest.”

The Person who is Not against You is for You(E)

49 John said, “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn’t a follower like us.”

50 Jesus told him, “Don’t stop him! Because whoever is not against you is for you.”

A Samaritan Village Refuses to Welcome Jesus

51 When the days grew closer for Jesus[v] to be taken up to heaven,[w] he was determined to continue his journey to Jerusalem. 52 So he sent messengers on ahead of him. On their way they went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him. 53 But the people[x] would not welcome him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem. 54 When his disciples James and John observed this rejection,[y] they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?”[z] 55 But he turned and rebuked them,[aa] 56 and they all[ab] went on to another village.

The Would-be Followers of Jesus(F)

57 While they were walking along the road, a man told him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus told him,

“Foxes have holes and birds[ac] have nests,
but the Son of Man has no place to rest.”[ad]

59 He told another man, “Follow me.”

But he said, “Lord,[ae] first let me go and bury my father.”

60 But he told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. But you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

61 Still another man said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to those at home.”

62 Jesus told him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
