Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin
57 Those(A) who had arrested Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas(B) the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened. 58 Meanwhile, Peter was following Him at a distance right to the high priest’s courtyard.[a] He went in and was sitting with the temple police[b] to see the outcome.[c](C)
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death.(D) 60 But they could not find any, even though many false witnesses(E) came forward.[d] Finally, two[e] who came forward 61 stated, “This man said, ‘I can demolish God’s sanctuary(F) and rebuild it in three days.’”
62 The high priest then stood up and said to Him, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?” 63 But(G) Jesus kept silent.(H) Then the high priest said to Him, “By the living God I place You under oath:(I) tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!”(J)
64 “You have said it,”[f] Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future[g] you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(K)[h]
65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed!(L) Why do we still need witnesses? Look, now you’ve heard the blasphemy!(M) 66 What is your decision?”[i]
They answered, “He deserves death!”(N) 67 Then they spit in His face(O) and beat Him; others slapped Him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who hit You?”(P)
Peter Denies His Lord
69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.(Q) A servant approached him and she said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”
70 But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”(R)
72 And again he denied it with an oath,(S) “I don’t know the man!”
73 After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You certainly are one of them, since even your accent[j] gives you away.”
74 Then he started to curse[k] and to swear with an oath, “I do not know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed, 75 and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”(T) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Jesus Handed Over to Pilate
27 When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.(U) 2 After tying Him up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate,[l] the governor.(V)
Judas Hangs Himself
3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.(W) 4 “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.
“What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!”
5 So he threw the silver into the sanctuary(X) and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not lawful(Y) to put it into the temple treasury,[m] since it is blood money.”[n] 7 So they conferred together and bought the potter’s field with it as a burial place for foreigners. 8 Therefore that field has been called “Blood Field” to this day. 9 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
They took the 30 pieces of silver, the price of Him whose price was set by the Israelites, 10 and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.(Z)[o]
Jesus Faces the Governor
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor.(AA) “Are You the King of the Jews?” the governor asked Him.
Jesus answered, “You have said it.”[p](AB) 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He didn’t answer.(AC)
13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Don’t You hear how much they are testifying against You?” 14 But He didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.(AD)
Jesus or Barabbas
15 At the festival(AE) the governor’s custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted. 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.[q] 17 So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you—Barabbas,[r] or Jesus who is called Messiah?”(AF) 18 For he knew they had handed Him over because of envy.
19 While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of Him!”(AG)
20 The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus. 21 The governor asked them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?”
“Barabbas!” they answered.
22 Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Messiah?”
They all answered, “Crucify Him!”[s](AH)
23 Then he said, “Why? What has He done wrong?”
But they kept shouting, “Crucify Him!” all the more.(AI)
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere,[t] but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood.[u] See to it yourselves!”(AJ)
25 All the people answered, “His blood be on us(AK) and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But after having Jesus flogged,[v] he handed Him over to be crucified.(AL)
Mocked by the Military
27 Then(AM) the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into headquarters and gathered the whole company around Him.(AN) 28 They stripped Him and dressed Him in a scarlet military robe.(AO) 29 They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and placed a reed in His right hand. And they knelt down before Him and mocked Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then they spit on Him, took the reed, and kept hitting Him on the head. 31 When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.(AP)
Crucified Between Two Criminals
32 As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced this man to carry His cross.(AQ) 33 When they came to a place called Golgotha(AR) (which means Skull Place), 34 they gave Him wine[w] mixed with gall to drink. But when He tasted it, He would not drink it. 35 After crucifying Him they divided His clothes by casting lots.[x](AS) 36 Then they sat down and were guarding Him there. 37 Above His head they put up the charge against Him in writing:
THIS IS JESUS
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Then two criminals[y] were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.(AT) 39 Those who passed by were yelling insults at[z] Him, shaking their heads(AU) 40 and saying, “The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders,[aa] mocked Him and said, 42 “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel!(AW) Let Him[ab] come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He has put His trust in God; let God rescue Him now—if He wants Him![ac] For He said, ‘I am God’s Son.’” 44 In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with Him kept taunting Him.(AX)
The Death of Jesus
45 From noon until three in the afternoon[ad] darkness came over the whole land.[ae](AY) 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá[af] sabachtháni?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken[ag] Me?”(AZ)[ah]
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah!”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, and offered Him a drink.(BA) 49 But the rest said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to save Him!”
50 Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.(BB) 51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary[ai](BC) was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were also opened(BD) and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
54 When the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “This man really was God’s Son!”[aj](BE)
55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and ministered to Him were there, looking on from a distance.(BF) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BG)
The Burial of Jesus
57 When it was evening,(BH) a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple(BI) of Jesus. 58 He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Then Pilate ordered that it[ak] be released. 59 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, 60 and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.(BJ) 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.
The Closely Guarded Tomb
62 The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate(BK) 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive He said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BL) 64 Therefore give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples(BM) may come, steal Him, and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead.’ Then the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “You have[al] a guard of soldiers,”[am] Pilate told them. “Go and make it as secure as you know how.” 66 Then they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard.[an](BN)
Resurrection Morning
28 After the Sabbath,(BO) as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb. 2 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and approached the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it.(BP) 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his robe was as white as snow.(BQ) 4 The guards were so shaken from fear of him that they became like dead men.
5 But the angel told the women, “Don’t be afraid, because I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.(BR) 6 He is not here! For He has been resurrected, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.(BS) 7 Then go quickly and tell His disciples,(BT) ‘He has been raised from the dead. In fact, He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there.’ Listen, I have told you.”(BU)
8 So, departing quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell His disciples the news. 9 Just then[ao] Jesus met them and said, “Good morning!” They came up, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him.(BV) 10 Then Jesus told them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see Me there.”(BW)
The Soldiers Are Bribed to Lie
11 As they were on their way, some of the guards came into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 After the priests[ap] had assembled with the elders and agreed on a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money 13 and told them, “Say this, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole Him while we were sleeping.’ 14 If this reaches the governor’s ears,[aq] we will deal with[ar] him and keep you out of trouble.”(BX) 15 So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been spread among Jewish people to this day.(BY)
The Great Commission
16 The 11 disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them.(BZ) 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped,[as] but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.(CA) 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples(CB) of[at] all nations,(CC) baptizing(CD) them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,[au] I am with you always,[av] to the end of the age.”(CE)
The Messiah’s Herald
1 The beginning(CF) of the gospel(CG) of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.(CH) 2 As it is written in Isaiah(CI) the prophet:[aw](CJ)
Look, I am sending My messenger(CK) ahead of You,
who will prepare Your way.[ax]
3 A voice of one crying out in the wilderness:(CL)
Prepare the way for the Lord;(CM)
make His paths straight!(CN)[ay]
4 John came baptizing[az](CO) in the wilderness(CP) and preaching a baptism of repentance[ba](CQ) for the forgiveness(CR) of sins.(CS) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem(CT) were flocking to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan(CU) River as they confessed(CV) their sins.(CW) 6 John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts(CX) and wild honey.(CY) 7 He was preaching: “Someone more powerful(CZ) than I will come after me.(DA) I am not worthy(DB) to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals.(DC) 8 I have baptized you with[bb] water,(DD) but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”(DE)
The Baptism of Jesus
9 In(DF) those days Jesus came from Nazareth(DG) in Galilee(DH) and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 As soon as He came up out of the water, He saw the heavens(DI) being torn open and the Spirit descending to Him like a dove. 11 And a voice(DJ) came from heaven:(DK)
The Temptation of Jesus
12 Immediately(DO) the Spirit(DP) drove(DQ) Him into the wilderness.(DR) 13 He was in the wilderness 40 days, being tempted(DS) by Satan.(DT) He was with the wild animals,(DU) and the angels(DV) began to serve Him.
Ministry in Galilee
14 After(DW) John was arrested,(DX) Jesus went to Galilee,(DY) preaching(DZ) the good news[bd][be](EA) of God:[bf](EB) 15 “The time(EC) is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God(ED) has come(EE) near.(EF) Repent(EG) and believe(EH) in the good news!”
The First Disciples
16 As(EI) He was passing along by the Sea of Galilee,(EJ) He saw Simon(EK) and Andrew,(EL) Simon’s brother. They were casting a net into the sea,(EM) since they were fishermen.
17 “Follow Me,”(EN) Jesus told them, “and I will make you fish for[bg](EO) people!”(EP) 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed(EQ) Him.(ER) 19 Going on a little farther, He saw James(ES) the son of Zebedee(ET) and his brother John.(EU) They were in their boat mending their nets. 20 Immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.(EV)
Driving Out an Unclean Spirit
21 Then(EW) they went into Capernaum,(EX) and right away He entered the synagogue(EY) on the Sabbath(EZ) and began to teach.(FA) 22 They were astonished(FB) at His teaching(FC) because, unlike the scribes,(FD) He was teaching them as one having authority.
23 Just then a man with an unclean(FE) spirit(FF) was in their synagogue.(FG) He cried out,[bh] 24 “What do You have to do with us,[bi] Jesus—Nazarene?(FH) Have You come to destroy(FI) us? I know who You are—the Holy(FJ) One of God!”(FK)
25 But Jesus rebuked(FL) him and said, “Be quiet,[bj](FM) and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit convulsed him,(FN) shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.
27 Then they were all amazed,(FO) so they began to argue(FP) with one another, saying, “What is this? A new teaching(FQ) with authority He commands even the unclean(FS) spirits,(FT) and they obey Him.” 28 News about Him then spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.(FU)
Healings at Capernaum
29 As(FV) soon as they left the synagogue,(FW) they went into Simon(FX) and Andrew’s(FY) house(FZ) with James(GA) and John.(GB) 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. 31 So He went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up.(GC) The fever(GD) left her,[bl] and she began to serve(GE) them.(GF)
32 When(GG) evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all those who were sick(GH) and those who were demon-possessed.(GI) 33 The whole town was assembled at the door, 34 and He healed(GJ) many who were sick with various diseases(GK) and drove out(GL) many demons.(GM) But He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew Him.(GN)
Preaching in Galilee
35 Very(GO) early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place.(GP) And He was praying(GQ) there. 36 Simon(GR) and his companions went searching for Him. 37 They found Him and said, “Everyone’s looking for You!”
38 And He said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach(GS) there too. This is why I have come.” 39 So He went into all of Galilee,(GT) preaching in their synagogues(GU) and driving out demons.
A Man Cleansed
40 Then(GV) a man with a serious skin disease(GW) came to Him and, on his knees,[bm](GX) begged Him: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”(GY)
41 Moved with compassion,(GZ) Jesus reached out His hand and touched(HA) him. “I am willing,” He told him. “Be made clean.” 42 Immediately the disease(HB) left him, and he was healed.[bn] 43 Then He sternly warned(HC) him and sent him away(HD) at once, 44 telling him, “See that you say nothing to anyone;(HE) but go and show(HF) yourself to the priest,(HG) and offer(HH) what Moses prescribed for your cleansing,(HI) as a testimony(HJ) to them.” 45 Yet he went out and began to proclaim(HK) it widely and to spread the news,(HL) with the result that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. But He was out in deserted places, and they would come to Him from everywhere.
The Son of Man Forgives and Heals
2 When(HM) He entered Capernaum(HN) again after some days, it was reported that He was at home. 2 So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and He was speaking the message(HO) to them. 3 Then they came to Him bringing a paralytic,(HP) carried by four men. 4 Since they were not able to bring him to[bo] Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above where He was. And when they had broken through, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying.
5 Seeing their faith,(HQ) Jesus told the paralytic, “Son, your sins(HR) are forgiven.”(HS)
6 But some of the scribes(HT) were sitting there, thinking(HU) to themselves:[bp] 7 “Why does He speak like this? He’s blaspheming!(HV) Who can forgive(HW) sins(HX) but God alone?”(HY)
8 Right away(HZ) Jesus understood in His spirit(IA) that they were thinking like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?[bq] 9 Which is easier:(IB) to say to the paralytic,(IC) ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?(ID) 10 But so you may know that the Son of Man(IE) has authority(IF) on earth to forgive sins,”(IG) He told the paralytic, 11 “I tell you: get up,(IH) pick up your mat, and go home.”
12 Immediately he got up, picked up the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded(II) and gave glory(IJ) to God,(IK) saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(IL)
The Call of Matthew
13 Then(IM) Jesus went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd was coming to Him, and He taught(IN) them. 14 Then, moving on, He saw Levi(IO) the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office,(IP) and He said to him, “Follow Me!”(IQ) So he got up and followed(IR) Him.
Dining with Sinners
15 While He was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors(IS) and sinners(IT) were also guests[br](IU) with Jesus and His disciples, because there were many who were following Him. 16 When the scribes(IV) of the Pharisees[bs](IW) saw that He was eating(IX) with sinners(IY) and tax collectors,(IZ) they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat[bt] with tax collectors and sinners?”
17 When Jesus heard this, He told them, “Those who are well don’t need(JA) a doctor,(JB) but the sick(JC) do need one. I didn’t come to call the righteous,(JD) but sinners.”(JE)
A Question about Fasting
18 Now(JF) John’s(JG) disciples(JH) and the Pharisees[bu](JI) were fasting.(JJ) People came and asked Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”
19 Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests[bv] cannot fast while the groom(JK) is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast. 20 But the time[bw] will come(JL) when the groom is taken away from them,(JM) and then they will fast(JN) in that day. 21 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new patch pulls away from the old cloth,(JO) and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine(JP) into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst(JQ) the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins.[bx] But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”
Lord of the Sabbath
23 On(JR) the Sabbath He was going through the grainfields, and His disciples(JS) began to make their way picking some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees(JT) said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful(JU) on the Sabbath?”
25 He said to them, “Have you never read what David(JV) and those who were with him did when he was in need(JW) and hungry(JX)— 26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar(JY) the high priest(JZ) and ate the sacred bread(KA)—which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests(KB)—and also gave some to his companions?” 27 Then He told them, “The Sabbath was made for[by] man and not man for[bz] the Sabbath.(KC) 28 Therefore, the Son of Man(KD) is Lord(KE) even of the Sabbath.”(KF)
The Man with the Paralyzed Hand
3 Now(KG) He entered the synagogue(KH) again, and a man was there who had a paralyzed(KI) hand. 2 In order to accuse(KJ) Him, they were watching Him closely(KK) to see whether He would heal(KL) him on the Sabbath.(KM) 3 He told the man with the paralyzed hand, “Stand before us.”[ca] 4 Then He said to them, “Is it lawful(KN) on the Sabbath to do what is good(KO) or to do what is evil,(KP) to save life(KQ) or to kill?”(KR) But they were silent.(KS) 5 After looking around at them with anger(KT) and sorrow at the hardness(KU) of their hearts, He told the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.(KV) 6 Immediately the Pharisees(KW) went out and started plotting(KX) with the Herodians(KY) against Him, how they might destroy(KZ) Him.
Ministering to the Multitude
7 Jesus(LA) departed with His disciples to the sea, and a large crowd followed from Galilee,(LB) Judea,(LC) 8 Jerusalem,(LD) Idumea, beyond the Jordan,(LE) and around Tyre(LF) and Sidon.(LG) The large crowd came to Him because they heard about everything He was doing. 9 Then He told His disciples to have a small boat(LH) ready for Him, so the crowd would not crush Him. 10 Since He had healed(LI) many, all who had diseases were pressing toward Him to touch(LJ) Him. 11 Whenever the unclean(LK) spirits(LL) saw Him, those possessed fell down(LM) before Him and cried out, “You are the Son of God!”(LN) 12 And He would strongly warn(LO) them not to make Him known.(LP)
The 12 Apostles
13 Then(LQ) He went up the mountain(LR) and summoned those He wanted, and they came to Him. 14 He also appointed 12—He also named them apostles[cb](LS)—to be with Him, to send them out to preach,(LT) 15 and to have authority to[cc] drive out demons.
16 He appointed the Twelve:[cd](LU)

He gave the name “Boanerges”

19 and Judas Iscariot,[cf](MF)
who also betrayed Him.
A House Divided
20 Then He went home, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat.[cg] 21 When His family(MG) heard this, they set out to restrain Him, because they said, “He’s out of His mind.”(MH)
22 The scribes(MI) who had come down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul(MJ) in Him!” and, “He drives out(MK) demons(ML) by the ruler(MM) of the demons!”(MN)
23 So He summoned(MO) them and spoke to them in parables:(MP) “How can Satan(MQ) drive out Satan?(MR) 24 If a kingdom(MS) is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan rebels against himself and is divided, he cannot stand but is finished![ch]
27 “On the other hand, no one can enter a strong man’s house and rob his possessions unless he first ties up(MT) the strong man. Then he will rob his house. 28 I assure you: People will be forgiven for all sins[ci] and whatever blasphemies(MU) they may blaspheme. 29 But whoever blasphemes(MV) against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness,(MW) but is guilty(MX) of an eternal sin”[cj](MY)— 30 because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”(MZ)
True Relationships
31 Then(NA) His mother(NB) and His brothers(NC) came, and standing outside, they sent word to Him and called Him. 32 A crowd was sitting around Him and told Him, “Look, Your mother, Your brothers,(ND) and Your sisters[ck] are outside asking for You.”
33 He replied to them, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who were sitting in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!(NE) 35 Whoever does the will of God(NF) is My brother and sister and mother.”
The Parable of the Sower
4 Again(NG) He began to teach(NH) by the sea, and a very large crowd gathered around Him. So He got into a boat on the sea and sat down, while the whole crowd was on the shore facing the sea. 2 He taught them many things in parables,(NI) and in His teaching(NJ) He said to them: 3 “Listen! Consider the sower who went out to sow.(NK) 4 As he sowed, this occurred: Some seed fell along the path,(NL) and the birds came and ate(NM) it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it sprang up right away,(NN) since it didn’t have deep soil. 6 When the sun came up, it was scorched, and since it didn’t have a root, it withered.(NO) 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it didn’t produce a crop. 8 Still others fell on good ground and produced a crop that increased(NP) 30, 60, and 100 times what was sown.”(NQ) 9 Then He said, “Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”(NR)
Why Jesus Used Parables
10 When He was alone with the Twelve,(NS) those who were around Him asked Him about the parables.(NT) 11 He answered them, “The secret(NU) of the kingdom of God(NV) has been given to you, but to those outside,(NW) everything comes in parables 12 so that
they may look and look,
yet not perceive;
they may listen and listen,
yet not understand;(NX)
otherwise, they might turn back—
and be forgiven.”[cl](NY)[cm]
The Parable of the Sower Explained
13 Then(NZ) He said to them: “Don’t you understand this parable?(OA) How then will you understand any of the parables? 14 The sower sows(OB) the word.(OC) 15 These[cn] are the ones along the path(OD) where the word is sown: when they hear, immediately Satan(OE) comes and takes away the word(OF) sown in them.[co] 16 And these are[cp] the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, immediately they receive it with joy.(OG) 17 But they have no root in themselves; they are short-lived. When pressure(OH) or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately stumble.(OI) 18 Others are sown among thorns; these are the ones who hear the word, 19 but the worries(OJ) of this age,(OK) the seduction[cq](OL) of wealth,(OM) and the desires(ON) for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.(OO) 20 But the ones sown on good ground are those who hear the word,(OP) welcome it, and produce a crop:(OQ) 30, 60, and 100 times what was sown.”
Using Your Light
21 He(OR) also said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed?(OS) Isn’t it to be put on a lampstand?(OT) 22 For nothing is concealed except to be revealed,(OU) and nothing hidden except to come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, he should listen!”(OV) 24 Then He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. By the measure(OW) you use,[cr](OX) it will be measured and added(OY) to you. 25 For to the one who has, it will be given, and from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.”(OZ)
The Parable of the Growing Seed
26 “The kingdom of God(PA) is like this,” He said. “A man scatters seed on the ground; 27 he sleeps(PB) and rises(PC)—night(PD) and day, and the seed sprouts and grows—he doesn’t know how. 28 The soil produces a crop(PE) by itself—first the blade, then the head, and then the ripe grain(PF) on the head. 29 But as soon as the crop is ready, he sends for the sickle,(PG) because the harvest(PH) has come.”
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30 And(PI) He said: “How can we illustrate the kingdom of God,(PJ) or what parable(PK) can we use to describe it? 31 It’s like a mustard seed(PL) that, when sown in the soil, is smaller than all the seeds on the ground. 32 And when sown,(PM) it comes up and grows taller than all the vegetables,(PN) and produces large branches, so that the birds of the sky(PO) can nest in its shade.”
Using Parables
33 He would speak the word(PP) to them with many parables(PQ) like these, as they were able to understand.(PR) 34 And He did not speak to them without a parable. Privately, however, He would explain everything to His own disciples.(PS)
Wind and Wave Obey the Master
35 On(PT) that day, when evening had come, He told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” 36 So they left the crowd and took Him along since He was already in the boat. And other boats were with Him. 37 A fierce windstorm(PU) arose, and the waves(PV) were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But He was in the stern, sleeping(PW) on the cushion. So they woke Him up(PX) and said to Him, “Teacher! Don’t You care that we’re going to die?”(PY)
39 He got up, rebuked(PZ) the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence!(QA) Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 Then He said to them, “Why are you fearful?(QB) Do you still have no faith?”
41 And they were terrified(QC) and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey(QD) Him!”(QE)
Demons Driven Out by the Master
5 Then(QF) they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.[cs] 2 As soon as He got out of the boat, a man with an unclean(QG) spirit(QH) came out of the tombs(QI) and met Him. 3 He lived in the tombs.(QJ) No one was able to restrain him anymore—even with chains(QK)— 4 because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had snapped off the chains and smashed(QL) the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue(QM) him. 5 And always, night(QN) and day, he was crying out among the tombs(QO) and in the mountains(QP) and cutting himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice, “What do You have to do with me,[ct] Jesus, Son(QQ) of the Most High God?(QR) I beg[cu] You before God, don’t torment(QS) me!” 8 For He had told him, “Come out of the man, you unclean(QT) spirit!”(QU)
9 “What is your name?” He asked him.
“My name is Legion,”[cv](QV) he answered Him, “because we are many.” 10 And he kept begging Him not to send them out of the region.
11 Now a large herd of pigs(QW) was there, feeding(QX) on the hillside. 12 The demons[cw] begged Him, “Send us to the pigs, so we may enter them.” 13 And He gave them permission. Then the unclean(QY) spirits(QZ) came out and entered the pigs, and the herd of about 2,000 rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there. 14 The men who tended them[cx] ran off(RA) and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed(RB) by the legion,(RC) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind;(RD) and they were afraid.(RE) 16 The eyewitnesses described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed(RF) man and told about the pigs. 17 Then they began to beg Him to leave their region.
18 As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging Him to be with Him. 19 But He would not let him; instead, He told him, “Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord(RG) has done(RH) for you and how He has had mercy on you.” 20 So he went out and began to proclaim(RI) in the Decapolis(RJ) how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed.(RK)
A Girl Restored and a Woman Healed
21 When(RL) Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd(RM) gathered around Him while He was by the sea. 22 One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus,(RN) came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet(RO) 23 and kept begging Him, “My little daughter is at death’s door.[cy] Come and lay Your hands on(RP) her so she can get well(RQ) and live.”
24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against Him. 25 A woman suffering from bleeding(RR) for 12 years 26 had endured(RS) much under many doctors.(RT) She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 27 Having heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched(RU) His robe.(RV) 28 For she said, “If I can just touch His robes, I’ll be made well!”(RW) 29 Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was cured(RX) of her affliction.
30 At once Jesus realized in Himself that power(RY) had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd(RZ) and said, “Who touched My robes?”(SA)
31 His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing against You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
32 So He was looking around to see who had done this. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling, fell down(SB) before Him, and told Him the whole truth.(SC) 34 “Daughter,” He said to her, “your faith(SD) has made you well.[cz](SE) Go in peace and be free[da](SF) from your affliction.”(SG)
35 While He was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher(SH) anymore?”
36 But when Jesus overheard what was said, He told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid.(SI) Only believe.” 37 He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter,(SJ) James,(SK) and John,(SL) James’s brother. 38 They came to the leader’s house, and He saw a commotion—people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping?(SM) The child(SN) is not dead but asleep.”(SO)
40 They started laughing at Him, but He put them all outside. He took the child’s father,(SP) mother, and those who were with Him, and entered the place where the child was. 41 Then He took the child(SQ) by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!”[db] (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”(SR)). 42 Immediately the girl got up(SS) and began to walk.(ST) (She was 12 years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.(SU) 43 Then He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this(SV) and said that she should be given something to eat.
Rejection at Nazareth
6 He(SW) went away from there and came to His hometown,(SX) and His disciples(SY) followed Him. 2 When the Sabbath(SZ) came, He began to teach(TA) in the synagogue,(TB) and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom(TC) given to Him, and how are these miracles(TD) performed by His hands? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter,(TE) the son of Mary,(TF) and the brother of James,(TG) Joses, Judas,(TH) and Simon? And aren’t His sisters here with us?” So they were offended(TI) by Him.
4 Then Jesus said to them, “A prophet(TJ) is not without honor(TK) except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.” 5 So He was not able to do any miracles[dc](TL) there, except that He laid His hands on(TM) a few sick(TN) people and healed(TO) them. 6 And He was amazed(TP) at their unbelief.(TQ)
Commissioning the Twelve
Now He was going around the villages in a circuit, teaching.(TR) 7 He(TS) summoned(TT) the Twelve(TU) and began to send(TV) them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean(TW) spirits.(TX) 8 He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a walking stick: no bread, no traveling bag,(TY) no money in their belts. 9 They were to wear sandals, but not put on an extra shirt.(TZ) 10 Then He said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place. 11 If any place does not welcome(UA) you and people refuse to listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet(UB) as a testimony(UC) against them.”[dd]
12 So they went out and preached(UD) that people should repent.(UE) 13 And they were driving out many demons,(UF) anointing(UG) many sick(UH) people with olive oil,(UI) and healing them.(UJ)
John the Baptist Beheaded
14 King(UK) Herod(UL) heard of this, because Jesus’ name(UM) had become well known. Some[de] said, “John the Baptist(UN) has been raised from the dead,(UO) and that’s why supernatural powers(UP) are at work(UQ) in him.” 15 But others said, “He’s Elijah.”(UR) Still others said, “He’s a prophet[df]—like one of the prophets.”(US)
16 When Herod(UT) heard of it, he said, “John,(UU) the one I beheaded, has been raised!”(UV) 17 For(UW) Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain(UX) him in prison on account of Herodias,(UY) his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.(UZ) 18 John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful(VA) for you to have your brother’s wife!”(VB) 19 So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill(VC) him. But she could not, 20 because Herod was in awe(VD) of[dg] John and was protecting him, knowing he was a righteous(VE) and holy(VF) man. When Herod heard him he would be very disturbed,[dh](VG) yet would hear him gladly.(VH)
21 Now an opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet(VI) for his nobles,(VJ) military commanders,(VK) and the leading men of Galilee.(VL) 22 When Herodias’s own daughter[di] came in and danced,(VM) she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 So he swore(VN) oaths(VO) to her: “Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(VP)
24 Then she went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?”
“John the Baptist’s(VQ) head!” she said.
25 Immediately she hurried to the king and said, “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s(VR) head on a platter(VS)—right now!”
26 Though the king was deeply distressed,(VT) because of his oaths(VU) and the guests[dj] he did not want to refuse(VV) her. 27 The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John’s head. So he went and beheaded him in prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples[dk](VW) heard about it, they came and removed his corpse and placed it in a tomb.(VX)
Feeding 5,000
30 The(VY) apostles(VZ) gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. 32 So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place, 33 but many saw them leaving and recognized them. People ran there by land from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.[dl] 34 So as He stepped ashore, He saw a huge crowd and had compassion(WA) on them, because they were like sheep(WB) without a shepherd. Then He began to teach them many things.
35 When it was already late, His disciples(WC) approached Him and said, “This place is a wilderness,(WD) and it is already late! 36 Send them away, so they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages to buy themselves something to eat.”
37 “You give them something to eat,” He responded.
They said to Him, “Should we go and buy 200 denarii(WE) worth of bread and give them something to eat?”
38 And He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look.”
When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”
39 Then He instructed them to have all the people sit down[dm] in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in ranks of hundreds and fifties. 41 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves. He kept giving them to His disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 Everyone ate and was filled.(WF) 43 Then they picked up 12 baskets full of pieces of bread and fish. 44 Now those who ate the loaves were 5,000 men.
Walking on the Water
45 Immediately(WG) He made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, to Bethsaida,(WH) while He dismissed the crowd. 46 After He said good-bye to them, He went away to the mountain(WI) to pray.(WJ) 47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. 48 He saw them being battered(WK) as they rowed,[dn] because the wind was against them. Around three in the morning[do] He came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them. 49 When they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost(WL) and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were terrified.(WM) Immediately He spoke with them and said, “Have courage!(WN) It is I.(WO) Don’t be afraid.”(WP) 51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,[dp] 52 because they had not understood about the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.(WQ)
Miraculous Healings
53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret(WR) and beached the boat. 54 As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized Him. 55 They hurried throughout that vicinity and began to carry the sick(WS) on mats to wherever they heard He was. 56 Wherever He would go, into villages, towns, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him that they might touch just the tassel(WT) of His robe.(WU) And everyone who touched it was made well.
The Traditions of the Elders
7 The(WV) Pharisees(WW) and some of the scribes(WX) who had come from Jerusalem(WY) gathered around Him. 2 They observed that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unclean(WZ)—that is, unwashed—hands. 3 (For the Pharisees, in fact all the Jews, will not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, keeping the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace,(XA) they do not eat unless they have washed.(XB) And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, jugs, copper utensils, and dining couches.[dq](XC)) 5 Then the Pharisees(XD) and the scribes(XE) asked Him, “Why don’t Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders,(XF) instead of eating bread with ritually unclean[dr] hands?”
6 He answered them, “Isaiah(XG) prophesied(XH) correctly about you hypocrites,(XI) as it is written:(XJ)
These people honor(XK) Me with their lips,
but their heart is far from Me.
7 They worship Me in vain,
teaching(XL) as doctrines(XM) the commands(XN) of men.(XO)[ds]
8 Disregarding the command of God, you keep the tradition of men.”[dt] 9 He also said to them, “You completely invalidate God’s command in order to maintain[du] your tradition! 10 For Moses(XP) said:
Honor your father and your mother;(XQ)[dv] and
Whoever speaks evil of father or mother
must be put to death.(XR)[dw]
11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit(XS) you might have received from me is Corban’” (that is, a gift(XT) committed to the temple), 12 “you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13 You revoke God’s word(XU) by your tradition that you have handed(XV) down. And you do many other similar things.” 14 Summoning(XW) the crowd again, He told them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:(XX) 15 Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him. [16 If anyone has ears to hear, he should listen!]”[dx]
17 When He went into the house away from the crowd, the disciples asked Him about the parable. 18 And He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realize that nothing going into a man from the outside can defile him? 19 For it doesn’t go into his heart but into the stomach(XY) and is eliminated.”[dy] (As a result, He made all foods clean.[dz](XZ)) 20 Then He said, “What comes out of a person—that defiles him. 21 For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities,(YA) thefts, murders,(YB) 22 adulteries,(YC) greed,(YD) evil actions, deceit,(YE) promiscuity,(YF) stinginess,[ea] blasphemy,(YG) pride,(YH) and foolishness.(YI) 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a person.”
A Gentile Mother’s Faith
24 He got up and departed from(YJ) there to the region of Tyre(YK) and Sidon.[eb](YL) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but He could not escape notice. 25 Instead, immediately after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit(YM) came and fell at His feet.(YN) 26 Now the woman was Greek,(YO) a Syrophoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to drive the demon(YP) out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, “Allow the children to be satisfied first, because it isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”(YQ)
28 But she replied to Him, “Lord,(YR) even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
29 Then He told her, “Because of this reply, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.
Jesus Does Everything Well
31 Again, leaving the region of Tyre,(YS) He went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,(YT) through[ec] the region of the Decapolis.(YU) 32 They brought to Him a deaf(YV) man who also had a speech difficulty,(YW) and begged Jesus to lay His hand on(YX) him. 33 So He took him away from the crowd privately. After putting His fingers in the man’s ears and spitting,(YY) He touched his tongue. 34 Then, looking up to heaven,(YZ) He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!”[ed] (that is, “Be opened!”). 35 Immediately his ears were opened,(ZA) his speech difficulty was removed,[ee] and he began to speak clearly.(ZB) 36 Then He ordered them to tell no one,(ZC) but the more He would order them, the more they would proclaim(ZD) it.
37 They were extremely astonished and said, “He has done everything well!(ZE) He even makes deaf(ZF) people hear, and people unable to speak,(ZG) talk!”
Feeding 4,000
8 In(ZH) those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He summoned(ZI) the disciples(ZJ) and said to them, 2 “I have compassion(ZK) on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry,[ef] they will collapse on the way,(ZL) and some of them have come a long distance.”
4 His disciples answered Him, “Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to fill(ZM) these people?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” He asked them.
“Seven,” they said. 6 Then He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke(ZN) the loaves, and kept on giving them to His disciples to set before the people. So they served the loaves to the crowd. 7 They also had a few small fish, and when He had blessed them, He said these were to be served as well. 8 They ate and were filled. Then they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces. 9 About 4,000 men were there. He dismissed them 10 and immediately got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.[eg]
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
11 The(ZO) Pharisees(ZP) came out and began to argue with Him, demanding of Him a sign(ZQ) from heaven(ZR) to test(ZS) Him. 12 But sighing deeply in His spirit,(ZT) He said, “Why does this generation(ZU) demand a sign? I assure you:(ZV) No sign will be given to this generation!” 13 Then He left them, got on board the boat again, and went to the other side.
14 They had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 Then(ZW) He commanded them: “Watch out! Beware of the yeast(ZX) of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”(ZY)
16 They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread. 17 Aware of this, He said to them, “Why are you discussing that you do not have any bread? Don’t you understand or comprehend? Is your heart hardened?(ZZ) 18 Do you have eyes, and not see, and do you have ears, and not hear?(AAA)[eh] And do you not remember?(AAB) 19 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?”
“Twelve,” they told Him.
20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?”
“Seven,” they said.
21 And He said to them, “Don’t you understand yet?”(AAC)
Healing a Blind Man
22 Then they came to Bethsaida.(AAD) They brought a blind(AAE) man to Him and begged Him to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting(AAF) on his eyes and laying His hands on(AAG) him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?”
24 He looked up and said, “I see people—they look to me like trees walking.”(AAH)
25 Again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and he saw distinctly. He was cured and could see everything clearly. 26 Then He sent(AAI) him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”[ei](AAJ)
Peter’s Confession of the Messiah
27 Jesus(AAK) went out with His disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”
28 They answered Him, “John the Baptist;(AAL) others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets.”(AAM)
29 “But you,” He asked them again, “who do you say that I am?”
Peter(AAN) answered Him, “You are the Messiah!”(AAO)
30 And He strictly warned(AAP) them to tell no one about Him.
His Death and Resurrection Predicted
31 Then(AAQ) He began to teach them that the Son of Man(AAR) must suffer many things and be rejected(AAS) by the elders,(AAT) the chief priests, and the scribes,(AAU) be killed, and rise(AAV) after three days.(AAW) 32 He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
33 But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan,(AAX) because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns,[ej] but man’s!”
Take Up Your Cross
34 Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself,(AAY) take up his cross,(AAZ) and follow Me.(ABA) 35 For whoever wants to save(ABB) his life will lose it,(ABC) but whoever loses(ABD) his life(ABE) because of Me(ABF) and the gospel(ABG) will save it.(ABH) 36 For what does it benefit(ABI) a man to gain(ABJ) the whole world(ABK) yet lose(ABL) his life?(ABM) 37 What can a man give in exchange for his life?(ABN) 38 For whoever is ashamed(ABO) of Me and of My words(ABP) in this adulterous and sinful(ABQ) generation,(ABR) the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory(ABS) of His Father(ABT) with the holy(ABU) angels.”(ABV)
9 Then He said to them, “I assure you:(ABW) There are some standing here who will not taste death(ABX) until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”(ABY)
The Transfiguration
2 After(ABZ) six days(ACA) Jesus took Peter, James, and John(ACB) and led them up on a high mountain(ACC) by themselves to be alone. He was transformed[ek](ACD) in front of them, 3 and His clothes(ACE) became dazzling—extremely white(ACF) as no launderer on earth could whiten(ACG) them. 4 Elijah(ACH) appeared to them with Moses,(ACI) and they were talking with Jesus.
5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(ACJ) it’s good(ACK) for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles:(ACL) one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— 6 because he did not know what he should say,(ACM) since they were terrified.(ACN)
7 A cloud(ACO) appeared, overshadowing(ACP) them, and a voice(ACQ) came from the cloud:(ACR)
8 Then suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone.
9 As(ACV) they were coming down from the mountain,(ACW) He ordered them to tell no one what they had seen(ACX) until the Son of Man(ACY) had risen(ACZ) from the dead.(ADA) 10 They kept this word(ADB) to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.
11 Then they began to question Him, “Why do the scribes(ADC) say that Elijah must come first?”(ADD)
12 “Elijah does come first and restores(ADE) everything,”(ADF) He replied. “How then is it written(ADG) about the Son of Man that He must suffer(ADH) many things and be treated with contempt?(ADI) 13 But I tell you that Elijah really has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written(ADJ) about him.”
