Jesus Before the Sanhedrin^(A)

⁵⁷ Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled. ⁵⁸ But Peter followed Him from afar to the high priest’s courtyard and went in, and sat with the servants to see the end.

⁵⁹ The chief priests and the elders and the entire Sanhedrin searched for false witness against Jesus to put Him to death, ⁶⁰ but they found none. Yes, though many false witnesses came forward, they found none.

At last two false witnesses came forward ⁶¹ and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”

⁶² Then the high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” ⁶³ But Jesus remained silent.

The high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”

⁶⁴ Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further need do we have for witnesses? See, now you have heard His blasphemy. ⁶⁶ What do you think?”

They answered, “He is guilty unto death.”

⁶⁷ Then they spat in His face and struck Him. And others slapped Him with the palms of their hands, ⁶⁸ saying, “Prophesy to us, You Christ! Who is it that struck You?”

Peter’s Denial of Jesus^(B)

⁶⁹ Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”

⁷⁰ But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”

⁷¹ Then when he went out onto the porch, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was also with Jesus of Nazareth.”

⁷² Again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man.”

⁷³ After a while those who stood by came to Peter and said, “Surely you also are one of them, for your accent betrays you.”

⁷⁴ Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and he swore, “I do not know the Man.”

Then immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵ Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” Then he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Brought Before Pilate^(C)

27 When the morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death. ² When they had bound Him, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pontius Pilate the governor.

The Death of Judas^(D)

³ When Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, ⁴ saying, “I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood.”

They said, “What is that to us? You must see to that.”

⁵ So he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed. And he went and hanged himself.

⁶ The chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because this is the price of blood.” ⁷ So they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field to bury strangers in. ⁸ Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. ⁹ Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of that the sons of Israel set on Him, ¹⁰ and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.”^[a]

Jesus Questioned by Pilate^(E)

¹¹ Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

Jesus said to him, “You have said so.”

¹² When He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He gave no answer. ¹³ Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” ¹⁴ But He never answered him a word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Jesus Sentenced to Die^(F)

¹⁵ Now at the feast, the governor was accustomed to releasing to the people a prisoner whom they chose. ¹⁶ They had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. ¹⁷ So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” ¹⁸ For he knew that they had handed Him over out of envy.

¹⁹ When he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man, for I have suffered much today in a dream on account of Him.”

²⁰ But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and kill Jesus.

²¹ The governor answered, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?”

They said, “Barabbas.”

²² Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”

They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”

²³ The governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?”

But they cried out all the more, “Let Him be crucified!”

²⁴ When Pilate saw that he could not prevail, but rather that unrest was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous Man. See to it yourselves.”

²⁵ Then all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

²⁶ Then he released Barabbas to them. But when he had scourged Jesus, he handed Him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus^(G)

²⁷ Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole detachment of soldiers before Him. ²⁸ They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him, ²⁹ and when they wove a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a staff in His right hand. They knelt before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” ³⁰ They spit on Him, and took the staff and hit Him on the head. ³¹ After they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own garments on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

The Crucifixion^(H)

³² As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. This man they compelled to bear His cross. ³³ When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull, ³⁴ they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He tasted it, He would not drink it. ³⁵ When they crucified Him, they divided His garments by casting lots to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, “They divided My garments among themselves and for My clothing they cast lots.”^{[b] 36} And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. ³⁷ They put His accusation over His head, which read:

THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

³⁸ Then two thieves were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left. ³⁹ Those who passed by insulted Him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” ⁴¹ Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him, saying, ⁴² “He saved others. He cannot save Himself. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. ⁴³ He trusted in God. Let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him. For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” ⁴⁴ Even the thieves who were crucified with Him insulted Him in the same way.

The Death of Jesus^(I)

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. ⁴⁶ About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”^[c]

⁴⁷ Some of those who stood there heard it and said, “This Man is calling for Elijah.”

⁴⁸ Immediately one of them ran, took a sponge, filled it with wine, and put it on a stick, and gave it to Him to drink. ⁴⁹ The rest said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

⁵⁰ And Jesus, when He had cried out again with a loud voice, released His spirit.

⁵¹ At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from the top to the bottom. And the ground shook, and the rocks split apart. ⁵² The graves also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had died were raised, ⁵³ and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the Holy City and appeared to many.

⁵⁴ When the centurion and those with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they feared greatly and said, “Truly He was the Son of God!”

⁵⁵ Many women who were there watching from afar followed Jesus from Galilee, serving Him, ⁵⁶ among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

The Burial of Jesus^(J)

⁵⁷ When the evening came, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. ⁵⁸ He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. ⁵⁹ When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, ⁶⁰ and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. And he rolled a large stone to the door of the tomb and departed. ⁶¹ Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

⁶² The next day, following the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered before Pilate, ⁶³ saying, “Sir, we remember that deceiver saying while He was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ ⁶⁴ Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ The last deception will be worse than the first.”

⁶⁵ Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go your way. Make it as secure as you can.” ⁶⁶ So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and posting the guard.

The Resurrection^(K)

28 At the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

² And then there was a great earthquake. For the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat on it. ³ His countenance was like lightning, and his garments white as snow. ⁴ The soldiers shook for fear of him and became like dead men.

⁵ The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid. For I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. ⁶ He is not here. For He has risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. ⁷ Then go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead, and indeed, He is going before you to Galilee. There you will see Him. Listen, I have told you.”

⁸ So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word. ⁹ As they went to tell His disciples, suddenly Jesus met them, saying, “Greetings!” They came and took hold of His feet and worshipped Him. ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell My brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”

The Report of the Guard

¹¹ While they were going, indeed, some of the soldiers went into the city and described to the chief priests everything that had happened. ¹² When the chief priests were assembled with the elders and had taken counsel, they gave much money to the soldiers, ¹³ saying, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were sleeping.’ ¹⁴ If this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you secure.” ¹⁵ So they took the money and did as they were instructed. And this saying has been commonly reported among the Jews to this day.

The Commissioning of the Disciples^(L)

¹⁶ Then the eleven disciples went away to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. ¹⁷ When they saw Him, they worshipped Him. But some doubted. ¹⁸ Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. ¹⁹ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

The Preaching of John the Baptist^(M)

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. ² As it is written in the Prophets:

⁴ John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. ⁵ The whole region of Judea and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. ⁶ John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist. And he ate locusts and wild honey. ⁷ He preached saying, “After me is coming One mightier than I, the straps of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. ⁸ I indeed have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus^(N)

⁹ In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. ¹⁰ Coming up out of the water, He immediately saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove. ¹¹ And a voice came from heaven, saying, “You are My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus^(O)

¹² The Spirit immediately drove Him into the wilderness. ¹³ And He was there in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts. And the angels ministered to Him.

The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry^(P)

¹⁴ After John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, ¹⁵ saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the gospel.”

The Calling of the First Disciples^(Q)

¹⁶ As He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, his brother, throwing a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁷ Jesus said to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” ¹⁸ Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

¹⁹ When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee and John, his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. ²⁰ Immediately He called them. And they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed Him.

The Man With an Unclean Spirit^(R)

²¹ They went to Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. ²² They were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. ²³ In their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit. ²⁴ And he cried out, “Leave us alone! What do You have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are, the Holy One of God.”

²⁵ Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” ²⁶ When the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, it came out of him.

²⁷ They were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, “What is this? What new teaching is this? With authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” ²⁸ Immediately His fame spread everywhere throughout the region surrounding Galilee.

The Healing of Many People^(S)

²⁹ When He came out of the synagogue with James and John, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew. ³⁰ The mother of Simon’s wife lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told Him of her. ³¹ So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them.

³² In the evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were possessed with demons. ³³ The whole city was gathered at the door, ³⁴ and He healed many who were sick with various diseases and cast out many demons. And He did not let the demons speak, because they knew Him.

A Preaching Tour^(T)

³⁵ In the morning, rising up a great while before sunrise, He went out and departed to a solitary place. And there He prayed. ³⁶ Simon and those who were with Him followed Him, ³⁷ and when they found Him, they said to Him, “Everyone is searching for You.”

³⁸ He said to them, “Let us go into the nearby towns, that I may preach there also. For that is why I have come.” ³⁹ So He preached in their synagogues throughout Galilee and cast out demons.

The Cleansing of a Leper^(U)

⁴⁰ A leper came to Him, pleading with Him and kneeling before Him, saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”

⁴¹ Then Jesus, moved with compassion, extended His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I will. Be clean.” ⁴² As soon as He had spoken, the leprosy immediately departed from him, and he was cleansed.

⁴³ He sternly warned him, and sent him away at once, ⁴⁴ saying, “See that you say nothing to anyone. But go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” ⁴⁵ Instead he went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news around, so that Jesus could no more openly enter the city, but was out in remote places. And they came to Him from every quarter.

The Healing of a Paralytic^(V)

2 Again, He entered Capernaum after some days. And it was reported that He was in the house. ² Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no room to receive them, not even at the door. And He preached the word to them. ³ They came to Him bringing one sick with paralysis, who was carried by four men. ⁴ When they could not come near Him due to the crowding, they uncovered the roof where He was. When they had broken it open, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. ⁵ When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

⁶ But some of the scribes were sitting there, reasoning in their hearts, ⁷ “Why does this Man speak such blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

⁸ Immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you contemplate these things in your hearts? ⁹ Which is easier to say to the paralytic: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? ¹⁰ But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the paralytic, ¹¹ “I say to you, rise, and take up your bed, and go your way to your house.” ¹² Immediately he rose, picked up the bed, and went out in front of them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

The Calling of Levi^(W)

¹³ He went out again by the seaside, and the whole crowd came to Him, and He taught them. ¹⁴ As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s station, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” And he rose and followed Him.

¹⁵ As Jesus was at supper in his house, many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples. For there were many, and they followed Him. ¹⁶ When the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”

¹⁷ When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

The Question About Fasting^(X)

¹⁸ Now the disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

¹⁹ Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. ²⁰ But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.

²¹ “No one sews a piece of new cloth on an old garment, or else the new piece that covered it tears away from the old, and the tear is made worse. ²² And no one pours new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, and the wine is spilled, and the wineskins will be marred. But new wine must be poured into new wineskins.”

The Question About the Sabbath^(Y)

²³ He went through the grain fields on the Sabbath. As they went, His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. ²⁴ The Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing on the Sabbath what is not lawful?”

²⁵ He said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he and those who were with him were in need and hungry: ²⁶ how he went into the house of God, in the days Abiathar was the high priest, and ate the ritual bread, which is lawful only for the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?”

²⁷ Then He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. ²⁸ So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

The Man With a Withered Hand^(Z)

3 Again, He entered the synagogue, and there was a man who had a withered hand. ² They watched Him to see whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. ³ He said to the man who had the withered hand, “Stand up.”

⁴ Then He said to them, “Is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath, to save life or to kill?” But they kept silent.

⁵ When He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch your hand forward.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. ⁶ Then the Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against Him, how to kill Him.

The Crowd at the Seaside

⁷ Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea. And a great crowd followed Him from Galilee and Judea ⁸ and Jerusalem, and Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan. And those from Tyre and Sidon, a great crowd, when they heard what great things He did, came to Him. ⁹ He told the disciples to have a small boat ready for Him because of the crowd, lest they should crush Him. ¹⁰ For He had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed on Him to touch Him. ¹¹ When unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him, crying out, “You are the Son of God.” ¹² But He sternly ordered them not to make Him known.

The Choosing of the Twelve Apostles^(AA)

¹³ He went up into the mountain and called to Him those whom He desired, and they came to Him. ¹⁴ He ordained twelve to be with Him, and to be sent out to preach, ¹⁵ and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: ¹⁶ Simon, whom He named Peter; ¹⁷ James, the son of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James, whom he surnamed Boanerges (meaning Sons of Thunder); ¹⁸ Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas; and James the son of Alphaeus; and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; ¹⁹ and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.

Jesus and Beelzebub^(AB)

²⁰ Then they entered a house, and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat bread. ²¹ When His family heard of it, they went out to seize Him, for they said, “He is beside Himself.”

²² And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub, and by the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.”

²³ So He called them to Him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? ²⁴ If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. ²⁵ If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. ²⁶ And if Satan rises up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. ²⁷ No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then he will plunder his house. ²⁸ Truly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they speak. ²⁹ But he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal condemnation.”

³⁰ For they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

The Mother and Brothers of Jesus^(AC)

³¹ Then His mother and His brothers came, and standing outside, they sent to Him, calling Him. ³² The crowd sat around Him and said to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are outside asking for You.”

³³ He answered, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”

³⁴ Then He looked around at those who sat around Him and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! ³⁵ For whoever does the will of God is My brother, and My sister, and My mother.”

The Parable of the Sower^(AD)

4 Again He began to teach by the seaside. A large crowd was gathered before Him, so that He entered a boat and sat in it on the sea. And the whole crowd was by the sea on the land. ² He taught them many things in parables and said to them in His teaching: ³ “Listen! And take note: A sower went out to sow. ⁴ As he sowed, some seed fell beside the path, and the birds of the air came and devoured it. ⁵ Some seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and soon it sprang up because it did not have deep soil. ⁶ But when the sun rose, it was scorched. And because it had no root, it withered away. ⁷ Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. ⁸ And other seed fell on good ground, and it yielded grain that sprang up and increased by thirty, sixty, or a hundred times as much.”

⁹ Then He said to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables^(AE)

¹⁰ When He was alone, those who were around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable. ¹¹ He said to them, “To you is given the secret of the kingdom of God, but to those who are outside, everything is said in parables, ¹² so that

The Parable of the Sower Explained^(AF)

¹³ Then He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? ¹⁴ The sower sows the word. ¹⁵ These are those beside the path, where the word is sown. But when they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word which is sown in their hearts. ¹⁶ Others, likewise, are seed sown on rocky ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness, ¹⁷ but have no root in themselves, and so endure for a time. Afterward, when affliction or persecution rises for the word’s sake, immediately they fall away. ¹⁸ And others are seed sown among thorns, the ones who hear the word. ¹⁹ But the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. ²⁰ Still others are seed sown on good ground, those who hear the word, and receive it, and bear fruit: thirty, sixty, or a hundred times as much.”

A Light Under a Basket^(AG)

²¹ He said to them, “Is a candle brought to be put under a basket or under a bed and not to be set on a candlestick? ²² For there is nothing hidden except to be revealed; neither is anything kept secret except to be proclaimed. ²³ If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

²¹ When Jesus had crossed again by boat to the other side, many people gathered to Him. And He was beside the sea. ²² One of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus, saw Jesus and came and fell at His feet ²³ and earnestly asked Him, “My little daughter is lying at the point of death. I ask You, come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed. And she will live.” ²⁴ So Jesus went with him.

³⁰ At once, Jesus knew within Himself that power had gone out of Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?”

³¹ His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing against You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”

³² And He looked around to see her who had done it. ³³ But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the entire truth. ³⁴ He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

³⁵ While He was still speaking, some came from the house of the synagogue ruler and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”

³⁶ As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid, only believe.”

³⁷ He let no one follow Him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. ³⁸ He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw the tumult, and those who wept and wailed loudly. ³⁹ When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this uproar and weep? The girl is not dead, but sleeping.” ⁴⁰ They laughed at Him in ridicule.

But when He had put them all out, He took the father and the mother of the girl and those who were with Him and entered where the girl was lying. ⁴¹ He took the girl by the hand and said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” ⁴² Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were greatly astonished. ⁴³ He strictly ordered them to let no one know of it and directed them to give her something to eat.

¹⁷ Herod had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her. ¹⁸ For John said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ¹⁹ So Herodias had a grudge against him and would have killed him, but she could not, ²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, but heard him gladly.

²¹ But a convenient day came when Herod on his birthday prepared a ceremonial dinner for his lords and commanding officers and leading men of Galilee. ²² When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you desire, and I will give it to you.” ²³ And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?”

She said, “The head of John the Baptist.”

²⁵ She came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter at once.”

²⁶ The king was extremely sorrowful. Yet for the sake of his oath and those who sat with him, he would not reject her. ²⁷ So the king immediately sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. He went and beheaded him in the prison, ²⁸ and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother. ²⁹ When his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

⁵ So the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”

⁶ He answered, “Well has Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written:

⁸ For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”

⁹ And He said to them, “You full well reject the commandment of God so that you may keep your own tradition. ¹⁰ For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’^[j] and, ‘Whoever curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’^{[k] 11} But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “It is Corban,” that is to say, “What you would have profited from me is a gift to God,” he shall be free.’ ¹² Then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, ¹³ making the word of God of no effect through your tradition, which you have delivered. And you do many similar things.”

¹⁴ When He had called all the people to Him, He said, “Listen to Me, every one of you, and understand: ¹⁵ There is nothing from outside a man that by entering him can defile him. But the things which come out of the man are what defile him. ¹⁶ If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

¹⁷ When He had left the people and entered the house, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable. ¹⁸ He said to them, “Are you so without understanding also? Do you not know that anything from the outside that enters a man cannot defile him, ¹⁹ because it does not enter his heart, but into his stomach, and goes out into the sewer, thus purifying all foods?”

²⁹ Then He said to her, “For this answer, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter.”

The Deaf and Mute Man Healed

³¹ Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decapolis. ³² They brought to Him one who was deaf and had difficulty speaking. And they pleaded with Him to put His hand on him.

³³ He took him aside from the crowd, and put His fingers into his ears, and spat and touched his tongue. ³⁴ Looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” ³⁵ Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosened, and he spoke correctly.

³⁶ He ordered them to tell no one. But the more He ordered them, the more they greatly proclaimed it. ³⁷ They were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

The Feeding of the Four Thousand^(AU)

²² He came to Bethsaida. And they brought a blind man to Him and entreated Him to touch him. ²³ He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. When He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?”

²⁴ He looked up and said, “I see men as trees, walking.”

²⁵ Then again He put His hands on his eyes and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. ²⁶ He sent him home away to his house, saying, “Neither go into the town, nor tell it to anyone in the town.”

9 And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.”

The Transfiguration^(AZ)

² After six days Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain, alone by themselves. And He was transfigured before them. ³ His garments became shiny, extremely white as snow, such as no launderer on earth could whiten them. ⁴ And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses. And they were talking with Jesus.

⁵ Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three sanctuaries: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” ⁶ For he did not know what to say, because they were very afraid.

⁷ Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him.”

⁸ Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus only.

⁹ As they came down the mountain, He warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. ¹⁰ They kept that statement to themselves, questioning each other what the rising from the dead meant.

¹¹ And they asked Him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must first come?”

¹² He answered, “Elijah indeed comes first to restore all things. Yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? ¹³ But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they have done to him whatever they wished, as it is written of him.”
