22 Do not say,[a] “I will pay back[b] evil!”
Wait[c] for the Lord, so that he may vindicate you.[d]
23 The Lord abhors[e] differing weights,
and dishonest scales are wicked.[f]
24 The steps of a person[g] are ordained by[h] the Lord
so how can anyone[i] understand his own[j] way?
25 It is a snare[k] for a person[l] to rashly cry,[m] “Holy!”
and only afterward to consider[n] what he has vowed.[o]
26 A wise king separates out[p] the wicked;
he turns the threshing wheel over them.[q]
27 The human spirit[r] is like[s] the lamp[t] of the Lord,
searching all his innermost parts.[u]
28 Loyal love and truth[v] preserve a king,
and his throne is upheld by loyal love.[w]
29 The glory[x] of young men is their strength,
and the splendor[y] of old men is gray hair.[z]
30 Beatings and wounds cleanse away[aa] evil,
and floggings cleanse[ab] the innermost being.[ac]
21 The king’s heart[ad] is in the hand[ae] of the Lord like channels of water;[af]
he turns it wherever he wants.
All a person’s ways seem right in his own opinion,[ag]
but the Lord evaluates[ah] his thoughts.[ai]
To do righteousness and justice
is more acceptable[aj] to the Lord than sacrifice.[ak]
Haughty eyes and a proud heart—
what the wicked cultivate[al] is sin.
The plans of the diligent[am] lead[an] only to plenty,[ao]
but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.[ap]
Making a fortune[aq] by a lying tongue is like[ar] a vapor driven back and forth;[as]
they seek death.[at]
The violence[au] done by the wicked[av] will drag them away
because[aw] they have refused to do what is right.[ax]
The way of the guilty person[ay] is devious,[az]
but as for the pure,[ba] his way is upright.
It is better to live on a corner of the housetop[bb]
than to share a house[bc] with a quarrelsome wife.[bd]
10 The appetite[be] of the wicked has desired[bf] evil;
his neighbor is shown no favor[bg] in his eyes.
11 When a scorner is punished, the naive[bh] becomes wise;
when a wise person is instructed,[bi] he gains knowledge.
12 The Righteous One[bj] considers[bk] the house[bl] of the wicked;
he overthrows the wicked to their ruin.[bm]
13 The one who shuts his ears[bn] to the cry[bo] of the poor,
he too will cry out and will not be answered.[bp]
14 A gift given[bq] in secret subdues[br] anger,
and a bribe given secretly[bs] subdues[bt] strong wrath.[bu]
15 Doing[bv] justice brings[bw] joy to the righteous
and terror[bx] to those who do evil.
16 The one who wanders[by] from the way of wisdom[bz]
will end up[ca] in the company of the departed.[cb]
17 The one who loves[cc] pleasure[cd] will be[ce] a poor person;[cf]
whoever loves wine and anointing oil[cg] will not be rich.
18 The wicked become a ransom[ch] for the righteous,
and the treacherous[ci] are taken[cj] in the place of the upright.
19 It is better to live[ck] in the wilderness[cl]
than with a quarrelsome and easily provoked[cm] woman.
20 There is desirable treasure and olive oil[cn] in the dwelling of the wise,
but a foolish person[co] devours all he has.[cp]
21 The one who pursues righteousness and love[cq]
finds life, bounty,[cr] and honor.
22 A wise man went up against the city of the mighty
and brought down[cs] the stronghold in which they trust.[ct]
23 The one who guards his mouth and his tongue[cu]
keeps his life[cv] from troubles.[cw]
24 A proud[cx] and arrogant[cy] person, whose name is “Scoffer,”[cz]
acts[da] with overbearing pride.[db]
25 What the sluggard desires[dc] will kill him,[dd]
for his hands[de] have refused to work.
26 All day long he has craved greedily,[df]
but the righteous person gives and does not hold back.[dg]
27 The wicked person’s sacrifice[dh] is an abomination;
how much more[di] when he brings it with evil intent![dj]
28 A lying witness[dk] will perish,[dl]
but the one who reports accurately speaks forever.[dm]
29 A wicked person[dn] has put on a bold face,[do]
but as for the upright,[dp] he establishes[dq] his ways.
30 There is no wisdom and there is no understanding,
and there is no counsel against[dr] the Lord.[ds]
31 A horse is prepared for the day of battle,
but the victory is from the Lord.[dt]
22 A good name[du] is to be chosen[dv] rather than great wealth,
good favor[dw] more than silver or gold.
The rich and the poor are met together;[dx]
the Lord is the Creator of them both.[dy]
A shrewd person[dz] saw[ea] danger[eb] and hid[ec] himself,
but the naive passed on by and paid for it.[ed]
The reward[ee] for humility[ef] and fearing the Lord[eg]
is riches and honor and life.
Thorns and snares[eh] are in the path of the perverse,
but the one who guards himself keeps far from them.
Train[ei] a child[ej] in the way that he should go,[ek]
and when he is old he will not turn from it.[el]
The rich rule over[em] the poor,
and the borrower is servant[en] to the lender.
The one who sows[eo] iniquity will reap trouble,
and the rod of his fury[ep] will end.
A generous person[eq] will be blessed,[er]
for he has given some of his food[es] to the poor.
10 Drive out the scorner[et] and contention will leave;
strife and insults will cease.[eu]
11 The one who loves a pure heart[ev]
and whose speech is gracious[ew]—the king will be his friend.[ex]
12 The eyes of the Lord[ey] watched[ez] over a cause,[fa]
and subverted the words of the treacherous person.[fb]
13 The sluggard has said,[fc] “There is a lion[fd] outside!
I will be killed in the middle of the streets!”[fe]
14 The mouth[ff] of an adulteress is like[fg] a deep pit;[fh]
the one against whom the Lord is angry[fi] will fall into it.[fj]
15 Folly is bound up[fk] in the heart of a child,[fl]
but the rod of discipline[fm] will drive it far from him.
16 The one who oppresses the poor to increase his own gain
and the one who gives to the rich[fn]—both end up only in poverty.

The Sayings of the Wise[fo]

17 Incline your ear[fp] and listen to the words of the wise,
and apply your mind[fq] to my instruction.[fr]
18 For it is pleasing if[fs] you keep these sayings[ft] within you,
and[fu] they are ready on your lips.[fv]
19 So that[fw] your confidence may be in the Lord,
I hereby make them known[fx] to you today—even you.
20 Have I not written thirty sayings[fy] for you,
sayings[fz] of counsel and knowledge,
21 to show you true and reliable words,[ga]
so that you may give accurate answers[gb] to those who sent you?
22 Do not exploit[gc] a poor person because he is poor
and do not crush the needy in court,[gd]
23 for the Lord will plead their case[ge]
and will rob the life[gf] of those who are robbing[gg] them.
24 Do not make friends with an angry person,[gh]
and do not associate with a wrathful person,
25 lest you learn[gi] his ways
and entangle yourself in a snare.[gj]
26 Do not be one who strikes hands in pledge
or who puts up security for debts.
27 If you do not have enough to pay,
your bed[gk] will be taken[gl] right out from under you![gm]
28 Do not move an ancient boundary stone[gn]
that was put in place by your ancestors.[go]
29 You have seen[gp] a person skilled[gq] in his work—
he will take his position before kings;
he will not take his position[gr] before obscure people.[gs]
23 When you sit down to eat with a ruler,
consider carefully[gt] what[gu] is before you,
and put a knife to your throat[gv]
if you possess a large appetite.[gw]
Do not crave that ruler’s[gx] delicacies,
for[gy] that food is deceptive.[gz]
Do not wear yourself out to become rich;
be wise enough to restrain yourself.[ha]
When you gaze upon riches,[hb] they are gone,
for they surely make wings for themselves,
and fly off into the sky like an eagle![hc]
Do not eat the food of a stingy person,[hd]
do not crave his delicacies;
for he is[he] like someone who has calculated the cost[hf] in his mind.[hg]
“Eat and drink,” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you;
you will vomit up[hh] the little bit you have eaten,
and will have wasted your pleasant words.[hi]
Do not speak in the ears of a fool,[hj]
for he will despise the wisdom of your words.[hk]
10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone,
or take over[hl] the fields of the fatherless,
11 for their Protector[hm] is strong;
he will plead their case against you.[hn]
12 Apply[ho] your heart to instruction
and your ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Do not withhold discipline from a child;
even if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.
14 If you strike[hp] him with the rod,
you will deliver him[hq] from death.[hr]
15 My child,[hs] if your heart is wise,
then my heart also will be glad;
16 my soul[ht] will rejoice
when your lips speak what is right.[hu]
17 Do not let your heart envy[hv] sinners,
but rather be zealous in fearing the Lord[hw] all the time.
18 For surely there is a future,[hx]
and your hope will not be cut off.[hy]
19 Listen, my child,[hz] and be wise,
and guide your heart on the right way.
20 Do not spend time[ia] among drunkards,[ib]
among those who eat too much[ic] meat,
21 because drunkards and gluttons become impoverished,
and drowsiness[id] clothes them with rags.[ie]
22 Listen to your father who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Acquire[if] truth and do not sell it—
wisdom, and discipline, and understanding.
24 The father of a righteous person will rejoice greatly;[ig]
whoever fathers a wise child[ih] will have joy in him.
25 May your father and your mother have joy;
may she who bore you rejoice.[ii]
26 Give me your heart, my son,[ij]
and let your eyes observe my ways;
27 for a prostitute is like[ik] a deep pit;
a harlot[il] is like[im] a narrow well.[in]
28 Indeed, she lies in wait like a robber,[io]
and increases the unfaithful[ip] among men.[iq]
29 Who has woe?[ir] Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions? Who has complaints?
Who has wounds without cause? Who has dullness[is] of the eyes?
30 Those who linger over wine,
those who go looking for mixed wine.[it]
31 Do not look on the wine when it is red,
when it sparkles[iu] in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly.[iv]
32 Afterward[iw] it bites like a snake,
and stings like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange things,[ix]
and your mind will speak perverse things.
34 And you will be like one who lies down in the midst[iy] of the sea,
and like one who lies down on the top of the rigging.[iz]
35 You will say,[ja] “They have struck me, but I am not harmed!
They beat me, but I did not know it![jb]
When will I awake? I will look for another drink.”[jc]
24 Do not envy evil people,[jd]
do not desire[je] to be with them;
for their hearts contemplate violence,
and their lips speak harm.[jf]
By[jg] wisdom a house is built,[jh]
and through understanding it is established;
by knowledge its rooms are filled
with all kinds of precious and pleasing treasures.
A wise warrior[ji] is strong,[jj]
and a man of knowledge makes his strength stronger;
for with guidance you wage your war,
and with numerous advisers there is victory.[jk]
Wisdom is unattainable[jl] for a fool;
in court[jm] he does not open his mouth.[jn]
The one who plans to do evil
will be called a scheming person.[jo]
A foolish scheme[jp] is sin,
and the scorner is an abomination to people.[jq]
10 You have slacked off[jr] in the day of trouble[js]
your strength is small![jt]
11 Deliver those being taken away to death,
and hold back those slipping to the slaughter.[ju]
12 If you say, “But we did not know about this,”
won’t[jv] the one who evaluates[jw] hearts discern it?
Won’t the one who guards your life realize[jx]
and repay each person according to his deeds?[jy]
13 Eat honey,[jz] my child, for it is good,
and honey from the honeycomb is sweet to your taste.
14 Likewise, know[ka] that wisdom is sweet[kb] to your soul;
if you have found it,[kc] you have a future,[kd]
and your hope will not be cut off.
15 Do not lie in wait like the wicked[ke] against the place where the righteous live;
do not assault[kf] his home.
16 Indeed[kg] a righteous person will fall[kh] seven times, and then get up again,
but the guilty will collapse[ki] in calamity.
17 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,[kj]
and when he stumbles do not let your heart rejoice,
18 lest the Lord see it, and be displeased,[kk]
and turn his wrath away from him.[kl]
19 Do not fret because of evil people
or be envious of wicked people,
20 for the evil person has no future,[km]
and the lamp of the wicked will be extinguished.[kn]
21 Fear the Lord, my child,[ko] as well as the king,
and do not associate[kp] with rebels,[kq]
22 for suddenly their destruction will overtake them,[kr]
and who knows the ruinous judgment both the Lord and the king can bring?[ks]

23 These sayings also are from the wise:

To show partiality[kt] in judgment is terrible:[ku]
24 The one who says to the guilty,[kv] “You are innocent,”[kw]
peoples will curse him, and nations will denounce[kx] him.
25 But there will be delight[ky] for those who convict[kz] the guilty,[la]
and a pleasing blessing[lb] will come on them.
26 Like a kiss on the lips[lc]
is the one who gives an honest answer.
27 Establish your work outside and get your fields ready;
afterward build[ld] your house.[le]
28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause,[lf]
and do not deceive with your words.[lg]
29 Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me;
I will pay him back[lh] according to what he has done.”[li]
30 I passed by the field of a sluggard,
by the vineyard of one who lacks sense.[lj]
31 I saw[lk] that thorns had grown up all over it,
the ground[ll] was covered with weeds,
and its stone wall was broken down.
32 Then I scrutinized[lm] it. I was putting[ln] my mind[lo] to it—
I saw;[lp] I took in a lesson:[lq]
33 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to relax,
34 and your poverty will come like a bandit,
and your need like an armed robber.”[lr]

Proverbs of Solomon Collected by Hezekiah

25 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of King Hezekiah of Judah copied:[ls]

It is the glory of God[lt] to conceal[lu] a matter,

and it is the glory of a king to search out a matter.
As the heaven is high[lv] and the earth is deep
so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.[lw]
Remove the dross from the silver,
and material[lx] for the silversmith will emerge;
remove the wicked from before the king,[ly]
and his throne[lz] will be established in righteousness.[ma]
Do not honor yourself before the king,
and do not stand in the place of great men;
for it is better for him[mb] to say to you, “Come up here,”[mc]
than to put you lower[md] before a prince,
whom your eyes have seen.[me]
Do not go out hastily to litigation,[mf]
or[mg] what will you do afterward
when your neighbor puts you to shame?
When you argue a case[mh] with your neighbor,
do not reveal the secret of another person,[mi]
10 lest the one who hears it put you to shame
and your infamy[mj] will never go away.
11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver,[mk]
so is a word skillfully spoken.[ml]
12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold,[mm]
so is a wise reprover to the ear of the one who listens.[mn]
13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest,[mo]
so is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
for he refreshes the heart[mp] of his masters.
14 Like cloudy skies and wind that produce no rain,[mq]
so is the one who boasts[mr] of a gift not given.[ms]
15 Through patience[mt] a ruler can be persuaded,[mu]
and a soft tongue[mv] can break a bone.[mw]
16 You have found[mx] honey—eat only what is sufficient for you,
lest you become stuffed with[my] it and vomit it up.[mz]
17 Don’t set foot too frequently[na] in your neighbor’s house,
lest he become weary[nb] of you and hate you.
18 Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow,[nc]
so is the one who testifies against[nd] his neighbor as a false witness.[ne]
19 Like a bad tooth or a foot out of joint,[nf]
so is confidence[ng] in an unfaithful person at the time of trouble.[nh]
20 Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day,[ni]
or like vinegar poured on soda,[nj]
so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.[nk]
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat,
and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,
22 for you will heap coals of fire on his head,[nl]
and the Lord will reward you.[nm]
23 The north wind[nn] brings forth rain,
and a gossiping tongue[no] brings forth[np] an angry look.[nq]
24 It is better to live on a corner of the housetop
than in a house in company with a quarrelsome wife.[nr]
25 Like cold water to a weary person,[ns]
so is good news from a distant land.[nt]
26 Like a muddied[nu] spring and a polluted[nv] well,
so is a righteous person who gives way[nw] before the wicked.
27 It is not good[nx] to eat too much honey,
nor is it honorable for people to seek their own glory.[ny]
28 Like a city that is broken down and without a wall,
so is a person who cannot control his temper.[nz]
26 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest,
so honor[oa] is not fitting for a fool.[ob]
Like a fluttering bird or like a flying swallow,
so a curse without cause[oc] does not come to rest.[od]
A whip for the horse and a bridle for the donkey,
and a rod for the backs of fools![oe]
Do not answer a fool according to his folly,[of]
lest you yourself also be like him.[og]
Answer a fool according to his folly,[oh]
lest he be wise in his own opinion.[oi]
Like cutting off the feet or drinking violence,[oj]
so is sending[ok] a message by the hand of a fool.[ol]
Like[om] legs dangle uselessly[on] from the lame,
so[oo] a proverb[op] dangles[oq] in the mouth of fools.
Like tying a stone in a sling,[or]
so is giving honor to a fool.
Like[os] a thorn[ot] has gone up into the hand of a drunkard,
so[ou] a proverb has gone up[ov] into the mouth of a fool.[ow]
10 Like[ox] an archer who wounds at random,[oy]
so[oz] is the one who hires[pa] a fool or hires any passerby.
11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit,[pb]
so a fool repeats his folly.[pc]
12 You have seen[pd] a man wise in his own opinion[pe]
there is more hope for a fool[pf] than for him.
13 The sluggard[pg] has said,[ph] “There is a lion in the road!
A lion in the streets!”[pi]
14 Like[pj] a door that turns on its hinges,[pk]
so[pl] a sluggard turns[pm] on his bed.
15 The sluggard has plunged[pn] his hand in the dish;
he is too lazy[po] to bring it back to his mouth.[pp]
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own opinion[pq]
than seven people who respond with good sense.[pr]
17 Like[ps] one who grabs a wild dog by the ears,[pt]
so is the person passing by who becomes furious[pu] over a quarrel not his own.
18 Like a madman[pv] who shoots
firebrands and deadly arrows,[pw]
19 so is a person[px] who has deceived his neighbor,
and said, “Was I not only joking?”[py]
20 Where there is no wood, a fire goes out,
and where there is no gossip,[pz] contention ceases.[qa]
21 Like charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire,
so is a contentious person[qb] to kindle strife.[qc]
22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
and they have gone down into a person’s innermost being.[qd]
23 Like a coating of glaze[qe] over earthenware
are fervent[qf] lips with an evil heart.[qg]
24 The one who hates others disguises[qh] it with his lips,
but he stores up[qi] deceit within him.[qj]
25 When[qk] he speaks graciously,[ql] do not believe him,[qm]
for there are seven[qn] abominations[qo] within him.
26 Though his[qp] hatred may be concealed[qq] by deceit,
his evil will be uncovered[qr] in the assembly.
27 The one who digs a pit[qs] will fall into it;
the one who rolls a stone—it will come back on him.
28 A lying tongue[qt] hates those crushed by it,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.[qu]
27 Do not boast[qv] about tomorrow;[qw]
for you do not know[qx] what a day may bring forth.
Let another[qy] praise you, and not your own mouth;[qz]
someone else,[ra] and not your own lips.
A stone is heavy and sand is weighty,
but vexation[rb] by a fool is more burdensome[rc] than the two of them.
Wrath is cruel and anger is overwhelming,[rd]
but who can stand before jealousy?[re]
Better is open[rf] rebuke
than hidden[rg] love.
Faithful[rh] are the wounds of a friend,
but the kisses[ri] of an enemy are excessive.[rj]
The one whose appetite[rk] is satisfied loathes honey,
but to the hungry mouth[rl] every bitter thing is sweet.
Like a bird that wanders[rm] from its nest,
so is a person who wanders from his home.[rn]
Ointment and incense make the heart rejoice,[ro]
likewise the sweetness of one’s friend from sincere counsel.[rp]
10 Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend,
and do not enter your brother’s house in the day of your disaster;
a neighbor nearby is better than a brother far away.[rq]
11 Be wise, my son,[rr] and make my heart glad,
so that I may answer[rs] anyone who taunts me.[rt]
12 A shrewd person saw[ru] danger—he hid himself;
the naive[rv] passed right on by[rw]—they had to pay[rx] for it.
13 Take a man’s[ry] garment when he has given security for a stranger,
and hold him in pledge on behalf of a stranger.[rz]
14 If someone blesses[sa] his neighbor with a loud voice early in the morning,[sb]
it will be counted as a curse to him.[sc]
15 A continual dripping on a rainy day—
a contentious wife[sd] makes herself like that.[se]
16 Whoever contains her has contained[sf] the wind[sg]
or can grasp[sh] oil with his right hand.[si]
17 As[sj] iron sharpens[sk] iron,
so a person[sl] sharpens his friend.[sm]
18 The one who tends a fig tree[sn] will eat its fruit,[so]
and whoever takes care of[sp] his master will be honored.
19 As in water the face is reflected as a face,[sq]
so a person’s heart[sr] reflects the person.
20 As[ss] Death and Destruction are never satisfied,[st]
so the eyes of a person[su] are never satisfied.[sv]
21 As the crucible is for silver and the furnace is for gold,[sw]
so a person[sx] must put[sy] his praise[sz] to the test.
22 If you should pound[ta] the fool in the mortar
among the grain[tb] with the pestle,
his foolishness would not depart from him.[tc]
23 Pay careful attention to[td] the condition of your flocks,[te]
set your mind[tf] on your herds,
24 for riches do not last[tg] forever,
nor does a crown last[th] from generation to generation.
25 When the hay is removed and new grass appears,
and the grass from the hills is gathered in,
26 the lambs will be for your clothing,
and the goats will be for the price of a field.[ti]
27 And there will be enough goat’s milk for your food,[tj]
for the food of your household,
and for the sustenance[tk] of your servant girls.
28 The wicked person fled,[tl] though no one was pursuing,[tm]
but the righteous person can be as confident[tn] as a lion.
When a country is rebellious[to] it has many princes,[tp]
but by someone who is discerning and knowledgeable[tq] order is maintained.[tr]
A poor person[ts] who oppresses the weak
is like[tt] a driving rain without food.[tu]
Those who forsake the law[tv] praise the wicked,[tw]
but those who keep the law contend[tx] with them.
Evil people[ty] do not understand justice,[tz]
but those who seek the Lord[ua] understand it all.
A poor person[ub] who walks in his integrity is better
than one who is perverse in his ways[uc] even though[ud] he is rich.[ue]
The one who keeps the law[uf] is a discerning child,[ug]
but a companion of gluttons brings shame to[uh] his parents.[ui]
The one who increases his wealth by increasing interest[uj]
gathers it for someone who is gracious[uk] to the needy.
The one who turns away his ear[ul] from hearing the law,
even his prayer[um] is an abomination.[un]
10 The one who leads the upright astray in an evil way
will himself fall into his own pit,[uo]
but the blameless will inherit what is good.[up]
11 A rich person[uq] is wise in his own opinion,[ur]
but a discerning poor person can evaluate him properly.[us]
12 When the righteous rejoice,[ut] great is the glory,[uu]
but when the wicked rise to power, people are sought out.[uv]
13 The one who covers[uw] his transgressions will not prosper,[ux]
but whoever confesses them and forsakes them will find mercy.[uy]
14 Blessed is the one who is always cautious,[uz]
but whoever hardens his heart[va] will fall into evil.
15 Like[vb] a roaring lion or a roving bear,[vc]
so is a wicked ruler over a poor people.[vd]
16 The prince who is a great oppressor lacks wisdom,[ve]
but the one who hates[vf] unjust gain will prolong his days.
17 The one who is tormented[vg] by the murder[vh] of another will flee to the pit;[vi]
let no one support him.
18 The one who walks blamelessly will be delivered,[vj]
but whoever is perverse in his ways will fall[vk] at once.[vl]
19 The one who works his land will be satisfied with food,[vm]
but whoever chases daydreams[vn] will have his fill[vo] of poverty.
20 A faithful person[vp] will have an abundance of blessings,

for a person will transgress over the smallest piece of bread.[vt]
22 The stingy person[vu] hastens after riches
and does not know that poverty will overtake him.[vv]
23 The one who reproves[vw] another[vx] will in the end[vy] find more favor
than the one who flatters[vz] with the tongue.
24 The one who robs[wa] his father and mother and says, “There is no transgression,”
is a companion[wb] to the one[wc] who destroys.
25 The greedy person[wd] stirs up dissension,[we]
but the one who trusts[wf] in the Lord will prosper.[wg]
26 The one who trusts in his own heart[wh] is a fool,
but the one who walks in wisdom[wi] will escape.[wj]
27 The one who gives to the poor will not lack,[wk]
but whoever shuts his eyes to them[wl] will receive[wm] many curses.[wn]
28 When the wicked gain control,[wo] people[wp] hide themselves,[wq]
but when they perish,[wr] the righteous increase.
29 The one who stiffens his neck[ws] after numerous rebukes[wt]

When the righteous become numerous,[ww] the people rejoice;
when the wicked rule, the people groan.[wx]

Surely[aae] I am more brutish[aaf] than any other human being,[aag]
and I do not have human understanding;[aah]
I have not learned wisdom,

Who has ascended into heaven, and then descended?[aal]
Who has gathered up the winds in his fists?[aam]

Do not add to his words,

Remove falsehood and lies[aay] far from me;
do not give me poverty or riches,

lest I become satisfied and act deceptively[abb]
and say, “Who is the Lord?”
Or lest I become poor and steal
and demean[abc] the name of my God.
10 Do not slander[abd] a servant to his master,
lest he curse you, and you are found guilty.[abe]

and do not bless their mothers.[abg]
12 There is a generation who are pure in their own opinion
and yet are not washed[abh] from their filthiness.[abi]
13 There is a generation whose eyes are so lofty,[abj]

and whose molars[abn] are like knives
to devour[abo] the poor from the earth

31 The words of King Lemuel,[adg] an oracle[adh] that his mother taught him:

O[adi] my son, O son of my womb,
O son[adj] of my vows,
do not give your strength[adk] to women,

It is not for kings,[adn] O Lemuel,
it is not for kings to drink wine,[ado]
or for rulers to crave strong drink,[adp]
lest they drink and forget what is decreed,

Futility Illustrated from Nature

What benefit[ahm] do people[ahn] get from all the effort
which[aho] they expend[ahp] on earth?[ahq]
A generation comes[ahr] and a generation goes,[ahs]
but the earth remains[aht] the same[ahu] through the ages.[ahv]
The sun rises[ahw] and the sun sets;[ahx]
it hurries away[ahy] to a place from which it rises[ahz] again.[aia]
The wind goes to the south and circles around to the north;
round and round[aib] the wind goes and on its rounds it returns.[aic]
All the streams flow[aid] into the sea, but the sea is not full,
and to the place where the streams flow, there they will flow again.[aie]
All this[aif] monotony[aig] is tiresome; no one can bear[aih] to describe it.[aii]
The eye is never satisfied with seeing, nor is the ear ever content[aij] with hearing.

Futility of Secular Accomplishment

12 I, the Teacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 I decided[aiv] to carefully[aiw] and thoroughly examine[aix]
all that has been accomplished on earth.[aiy]
I concluded:[aiz] God has given people[aja] a burdensome task[ajb]
that keeps them[ajc] occupied.[ajd]
14 I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man[aje] on earth,[ajf]
and I concluded: Everything[ajg] he has accomplished[ajh] is futile[aji]—like chasing the wind![ajj]
15 What is bent[ajk] cannot be straightened,[ajl]
and what is missing[ajm] cannot be supplied.[ajn]

Futility of Secular Wisdom

16 I thought to myself,[ajo]
“I have become much wiser[ajp] than any of my predecessors who ruled[ajq] over Jerusalem;
I[ajr] have acquired much wisdom and knowledge.”[ajs]
17 So I decided[ajt] to discern the benefit of[aju] wisdom and knowledge over[ajv] foolish behavior and ideas;[ajw]
however, I concluded[ajx] that even[ajy] this endeavor[ajz] is like[aka] trying to chase the wind.[akb]
18 For with great wisdom comes[akc] great frustration;
whoever increases his[akd] knowledge merely[ake] increases his[akf] heartache.

Futility of Self-Indulgent Pleasure

I thought to myself,[akg]

“Come now,[akh] I will try[aki] self-indulgent pleasure[akj] to see[akk] if it is worthwhile.”[akl]
But I found[akm] that it also is futile.[akn]
I said of partying,[ako] “It is folly,”
and of self-indulgent pleasure,[akp] “It accomplishes nothing!”[akq]
I thought deeply[akr] about the effects of[aks] indulging[akt] myself[aku] with wine
(all the while[akv] my mind was guiding me[akw] with wisdom)[akx]
and the effects of[aky] behaving foolishly,[akz]
so that[ala] I might discover what is profitable[alb]
for people[alc] to do on earth[ald] during the few days[ale] of their lives.

Futility of Materialism

I increased my possessions:[alf]
I built houses for myself;[alg]
I planted vineyards for myself.
I designed[alh] royal gardens[ali] and parks[alj] for myself,
and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.
I constructed pools of water for myself,
to irrigate my grove[alk] of flourishing trees.
I purchased male and female slaves,
and I owned slaves who were born in my house;[all]
I also possessed more livestock—both herds and flocks—
than any of my predecessors in Jerusalem.
I also amassed silver and gold for myself,
as well as valuable treasures[alm] taken from kingdoms and provinces.[aln]
I acquired male singers and female singers for myself,
and what gives a man sensual delight[alo]—a harem of beautiful concubines.[alp]
So[alq] I was far wealthier[alr] than all my predecessors in Jerusalem,
yet I maintained my objectivity.[als]
10 I did not restrain myself from getting whatever I wanted;[alt]
I did not deny myself anything that would bring me pleasure.[alu]
So all my accomplishments gave me joy;[alv]
this was my reward for all my effort.[alw]
11 Yet when I reflected on everything I had accomplished[alx]
and on all the effort that I had expended to accomplish it,[aly]
I concluded:[alz] “All these[ama] achievements and possessions[amb] are ultimately[amc] profitless[amd]
like chasing the wind!
There is nothing gained[ame] from them[amf] on earth.”[amg]

Wisdom is Better than Folly

12 Next, I decided to consider[amh] wisdom, as well as foolish behavior and ideas.[ami]
For what more can the king’s successor do than what the king[amj] has already done?
13 I realized that wisdom is preferable to folly,[amk]
just as light is preferable to darkness:
14 The wise man can see where he is going,[aml] but the fool walks in darkness.
Yet I also realized that the same fate[amm] happens to them both.[amn]
15 So I thought to myself, “The fate of the fool will happen even to me![amo]
Then what did I gain by becoming so excessively[amp] wise?”[amq]
So I lamented to myself,[amr]
“The benefits of wisdom[ams] are ultimately[amt] meaningless!”
16 For the wise man, like[amu] the fool, will not be remembered for very long,[amv]
because[amw] in the days to come, both will already have been forgotten.[amx]
Alas,[amy] the wise man dies—just like[amz] the fool!
17 So I loathed[ana] life[anb] because what
happens[anc] on earth[and] seems awful to me;
for all the benefits of wisdom[ane] are futile—like chasing the wind.

Futility of Being a Workaholic

18 So I loathed all the fruit of[anf] my effort,[ang]
for which I worked so hard[anh] on earth,[ani]
because[anj] I must leave it[ank] behind[anl] in the hands of my successor.[anm]
19 Who knows if he will be a wise man or a fool?
Yet[ann] he will be master over all the fruit of[ano] my labor[anp]
for which I worked so wisely[anq] on earth.[anr]
This also is futile!
20 So I began to despair[ans] about all the fruit of[ant] my labor[anu]
for which I worked so hard[anv] on earth.[anw]
21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge, and skill;
however, he must hand over[anx] the fruit of his labor[any] as an inheritance[anz]
to someone else who did not work for it.
This also is futile, and an awful injustice![aoa]

Painful Days and Restless Nights

22 What does a man acquire from all his labor
and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth?[aob]
23 For all day long[aoc] his work produces pain and frustration,[aod]
and even at night his mind cannot relax.[aoe]
This also is futile!

Enjoy Work and its Benefits

24 There is nothing better for[aof] people[aog] than[aoh] to eat and drink,
and to find enjoyment[aoi] in their[aoj] work.
I also perceived that this ability to find enjoyment[aok] comes from God.[aol]
25 For no one[aom] can eat and drink[aon]
or experience joy[aoo] apart from him.[aop]
26 For to the one who pleases him,[aoq] God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy,
but to the sinner, he gives the task of amassing[aor] wealth[aos]
only to give[aot] it[aou] to the one who pleases God.
This[aov] task of the wicked[aow] is futile—like chasing the wind!
