John 15:18 - Acts 6:7

The World’s Hatred

18 (A)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (B)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (C)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (D)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (E)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (F)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (G)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (H)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (I)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (J)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (K)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (L)‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 (M)“But when the [a]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (N)He will testify of Me. 27 And (O)you also will bear witness, because (P)you have been with Me from the beginning.

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (Q)should not be made to stumble. (R)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (S)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And (T)these things they will do [b]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when [c]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I (U)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (V)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (W)if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has (X)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (Y)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (Z)of righteousness, (AA)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (AB)of judgment, because (AC)the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, (AD)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (AE)the Spirit of truth, has come, (AF)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (AG)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (AH)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [d]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (AI)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (AJ)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [e]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (AK)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (AL)joy. 21 (AM)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (AN)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (AO)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (AP)that your joy may be (AQ)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (AR)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (AS)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (AT)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (AU)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (AV)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (AW)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (AX)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (AY)each to his [f]own, and will leave Me alone. And (AZ)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (BA)in Me you may have peace. (BB)In the world you [g]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (BC)I have overcome the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (BD)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, (BE)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [h]should give eternal life to as many (BF)as You have given Him. And (BG)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (BH)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (BI)whom You have sent. (BJ)I have glorified You on the earth. (BK)I have finished the work (BL)which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together [i]with Yourself, with the glory (BM)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

(BN)“I have [j]manifested Your name to the men (BO)whom You have given Me out of the world. (BP)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words (BQ)which You have given Me; and they have received them, (BR)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that (BS)You sent Me.

“I pray for them. (BT)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and (BU)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 (BV)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, (BW)keep[k] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one (BX)as We are. 12 While I was with them [l]in the world, (BY)I kept them in [m]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and (BZ)none of them is [n]lost (CA)except the son of [o]perdition, (CB)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; (CC)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, (CD)just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but (CE)that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (CF)Sanctify[p] them by Your truth. (CG)Your word is truth. 18 (CH)As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And (CI)for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who [q]will believe in Me through their word; 21 (CJ)that they all may be one, as (CK)You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the (CL)glory which You gave Me I have given them, (CM)that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; (CN)that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

24 (CO)“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; (CP)for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father! (CQ)The world has not known You, but (CR)I have known You; and (CS)these have known that You sent Me. 26 (CT)And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love (CU)with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(CV)

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (CW)He went out with His disciples over (CX)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (CY)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. (CZ)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, (DA)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

They answered Him, (DB)“Jesus [r]of Nazareth.”

Jesus said to them, “I am He. And Judas, who (DC)betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground.

Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (DD)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 (DE)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (DF)the cup which My Father has given Me?”

Before the High Priest

12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (DG)they led Him away to (DH)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (DI)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (DJ)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [s]expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus(DK)

15 (DL)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (DM)another[t] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (DN)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”

He said, “I am (DO)not.”

18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

Jesus Questioned by the High Priest

19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, (DP)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (DQ)in synagogues and (DR)in the temple, where [u]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (DS)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (DT)struck[v] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

24 (DU)Then Annas sent Him bound to (DV)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Twice More

25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (DW)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (DX)immediately a rooster crowed.

In Pilate’s Court(DY)

28 (DZ)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (EA)But they themselves did not go into the [w]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (EB)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”

30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [x]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”

Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (EC)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (ED)signifying by what death He would die.

33 (EE)Then Pilate entered the [y]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”

35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”

36 (EF)Jesus answered, (EG)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”

Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (EH)that I should bear (EI)witness to the truth. Everyone who (EJ)is of the truth (EK)hears My voice.”

38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (EL)“I find no fault in Him at all.

Taking the Place of Barabbas(EM)

39 (EN)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 (EO)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (EP)Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(EQ)

19 So then (ER)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. [z]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (ES)struck Him with their hands.

Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (ET)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”

Pilate’s Decision

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”

(EU)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!

Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

The Jews answered him, (EV)“We have a law, and according to [aa]our law He ought to die, because (EW)He made Himself the Son of God.”

Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (EX)But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [ab]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”

11 Jesus answered, (EY)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (EZ)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (FA)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

13 (FB)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (FC)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, (FD)“We have no king but Caesar!”

16 (FE)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [ac]and led Him away.

The King on a Cross(FF)

17 (FG)And He, bearing His cross, (FH)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (FI)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (FJ)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (FK)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(FL)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (FM)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (FN)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (FO)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (FP)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (FQ)to his own home.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [ad]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (FR)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (FS)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (FT)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 (FU)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (FV)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (FW)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (FX)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (FY)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (FZ)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (GA)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (GB)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(GC)

38 (GD)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (GE)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (GF)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (GG)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (GH)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (GI)there they laid Jesus, (GJ)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb(GK)

20 Now the (GL)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the (GM)stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the (GN)other disciple, (GO)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

(GP)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (GQ)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and (GR)the [ae]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the (GS)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not [af]know the (GT)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 (GU)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 (GV)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (GW)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, (GX)“Mary!”

She turned and said to [ag]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet (GY)ascended to My Father; but go to (GZ)My brethren and say to them, (HA)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to (HB)My God and your God.’ ”

18 (HC)Mary Magdalene came and told the [ah]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

The Apostles Commissioned(HD)

19 (HE)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [ai]assembled, for (HF)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, (HG)“Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He (HH)showed them His hands and His side. (HI)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! (HJ)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (HK)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Seeing and Believing

24 Now Thomas, (HL)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (HM)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (HN)unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, [aj]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (HO)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

That You May Believe

30 And (HP)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (HQ)but these are written that (HR)you may believe that Jesus (HS)is the Christ, the Son of God, (HT)and that believing you may have life in His name.

Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (HU)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, (HV)Thomas called the Twin, (HW)Nathanael of (HX)Cana in Galilee, (HY)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [ak]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (HZ)did not know that it was Jesus. Then (IA)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

And He said to them, (IB)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore (IC)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (ID)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now (IE)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [al]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [am]love You.”

He said to him, (IF)“Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [an]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [ao]love You.”

(IG)He said to him, “Tend My (IH)sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [ap]Jonah, do you [aq]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, (II)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (IJ)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (IK)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (IL)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (IM)whom Jesus loved following, (IN)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [ar]will that he remain (IO)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (IP)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 (IQ)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (IR)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Prologue

The former account I made, O (IS)Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, (IT)until the day in which [as]He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit (IU)had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, (IV)to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many [at]infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit Promised

(IW)And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have (IX)heard from Me; (IY)for John truly baptized with water, (IZ)but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, (JA)“It is not for you to (JB)know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. (JC)But you shall receive power (JD)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and (JE)you shall be [au]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and (JF)Samaria, and to the (JG)end of the earth.”

Jesus Ascends to Heaven(JH)

(JI)Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, (JJ)He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them (JK)in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, (JL)will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room Prayer Meeting

12 (JM)Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up (JN)into the upper room where they were staying: (JO)Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and (JP)Simon the Zealot; and (JQ)Judas the son of James. 14 (JR)These all continued with one [av]accord in prayer [aw]and supplication, with (JS)the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with (JT)His brothers.

Matthias Chosen(JU)

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the [ax]disciples (altogether the number (JV)of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, (JW)which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (JX)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for (JY)he was numbered with us and obtained a part in (JZ)this ministry.”

18 (KA)(Now this man purchased a field with (KB)the [ay]wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his [az]entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:

(KC)‘Let his dwelling place be [ba]desolate,
And let no one live in it’;

and,

(KD)‘Let another take his [bb]office.’

21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when (KE)He was taken up from us, one of these must (KF)become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

23 And they proposed two: Joseph called (KG)Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, (KH)who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 (KI)to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (KJ)the Day of Pentecost had fully come, (KK)they were all [bc]with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and (KL)it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them [bd]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And (KM)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began (KN)to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Crowd’s Response

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, (KO)devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the (KP)multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak (KQ)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own [be]language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and (KR)Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and [bf]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

Peter’s Sermon(KS)

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, (KT)since it is only [bg]the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 ‘And(KU) it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
(KV)That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and (KW)your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
(KX)And they shall prophesy.
19 (KY)I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 (KZ)The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
21 And it shall come to pass
That (LA)whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you (LB)by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— 23 Him, (LC)being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, (LD)you [bh]have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 (LE)whom God raised up, having [bi]loosed the [bj]pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him:

(LF)‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see (LG)corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’

29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you (LH)of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, (LI)and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [bk]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, (LJ)that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 (LK)This Jesus God has raised up, (LL)of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore (LM)being exalted [bl]to (LN)the right hand of God, and (LO)having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He (LP)poured out this which you now see and hear.

34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:

(LQ)‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

37 Now when they heard this, (LR)they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

38 Then Peter said to them, (LS)“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [bm]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and (LT)to your children, and (LU)to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

A Vital Church Grows

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [bn]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [bo]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 (LV)And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [bp]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and (LW)many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and (LX)had all things in common, 45 and [bq]sold their possessions and goods, and (LY)divided[br] them among all, as anyone had need.

46 (LZ)So continuing daily with one accord (MA)in the temple, and (MB)breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And (MC)the Lord added [bs]to the church daily those who were being saved.

A Lame Man Healed

Now Peter and John went up together (MD)to the temple at the hour of prayer, (ME)the ninth hour. And (MF)a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, (MG)to [bt]ask alms from those who entered the temple; who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: (MH)In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. So he, (MI)leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God. (MJ)And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 10 Then they knew that it was he who (MK)sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Preaching in Solomon’s Portico

11 Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch (ML)which is called Solomon’s, greatly amazed. 12 So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 (MM)The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, (MN)glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you (MO)delivered up and (MP)denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go. 14 But you denied (MQ)the Holy One (MR)and the Just, and (MS)asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 and killed the [bu]Prince of life, (MT)whom God raised from the dead, (MU)of which we are witnesses. 16 (MV)And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

17 “Yet now, brethren, I know that (MW)you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But (MX)those things which God foretold (MY)by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 (MZ)Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that He may send [bv]Jesus Christ, who was [bw]preached to you before, 21 (NA)whom heaven must receive until the times of (NB)restoration of all things, (NC)which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since [bx]the world began. 22 For Moses truly said to the fathers, (ND)‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you. 23 And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 Yes, and (NE)all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also [by]foretold these days. 25 (NF)You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, (NG)‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 26 To you (NH)first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, (NI)in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”

Peter and John Arrested

Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the (NJ)Sadducees came upon them, being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.

Addressing the Sanhedrin

And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, as well as (NK)Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, (NL)“By what power or by what name have you done this?”

(NM)Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, (NN)that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, (NO)whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. 11 This is the (NP)‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ 12 (NQ)Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The Name of Jesus Forbidden

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, (NR)and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed (NS)standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16 saying, (NT)“What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a [bz]notable miracle has been done through them is (NU)evident[ca] to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”

18 (NV)So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, (NW)“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. 20 (NX)For we cannot but speak the things which (NY)we have seen and heard.” 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, (NZ)because of the people, since they all (OA)glorified God for (OB)what had been done. 22 For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.

Prayer for Boldness(OC)

23 And being let go, (OD)they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, (OE)You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who [cb]by the mouth of Your servant David have said:

(OF)‘Why did the nations rage,
And the people plot vain things?
26 The kings of the earth took their stand,
And the rulers were gathered together
Against the Lord and against His Christ.’

27 “For (OG)truly against (OH)Your holy Servant Jesus, (OI)whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 (OJ)to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants (OK)that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, (OL)and that signs and wonders may be done (OM)through the name of (ON)Your holy Servant Jesus.”

31 And when they had prayed, (OO)the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, (OP)and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Sharing in All Things

32 Now the multitude of those who believed (OQ)were of one heart and one soul; (OR)neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. 33 And with (OS)great power the apostles gave (OT)witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And (OU)great grace was upon them all. 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; (OV)for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 (OW)and laid them at the apostles’ feet; (OX)and they distributed to each as anyone had need.

36 And [cc]Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of [cd]Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, 37 (OY)having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Lying to the Holy Spirit

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. (OZ)But Peter said, “Ananias, why has (PA)Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

Then Ananias, hearing these words, (PB)fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. And the young men arose and (PC)wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”

She said, “Yes, for so much.”

Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together (PD)to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 (PE)Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. 11 (PF)So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

Continuing Power in the Church

12 And (PG)through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. (PH)And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. 13 Yet (PI)none of the rest dared join them, (PJ)but the people esteemed them highly. 14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, (PK)that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing (PL)sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

Imprisoned Apostles Freed

17 (PM)Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with [ce]indignation, 18 (PN)and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. 19 But at night (PO)an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people (PP)all the words of this life.”

21 And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. (PQ)But the high priest and those with him came and called the [cf]council together, with all the [cg]elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

Apostles on Trial Again

22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing [ch]outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” 24 Now when [ci]the high priest, (PR)the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. 25 So one came and told them, [cj]saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”

26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, (PS)for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28 saying, (PT)“Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, (PU)and intend to bring this Man’s (PV)blood on us!”

29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: (PW)“We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 (PX)The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by (PY)hanging on a tree. 31 (PZ)Him God has exalted to His right hand to be (QA)Prince and (QB)Savior, (QC)to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And (QD)we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit (QE)whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

Gamaliel’s Advice

33 When they heard this, they were (QF)furious[ck] and plotted to kill them. 34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named (QG)Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them: “Men of Israel, [cl]take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. 36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, [cm]joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. 38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; 39 (QH)but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found (QI)to fight against God.”

40 And they agreed with him, and when they had (QJ)called for the apostles (QK)and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, (QL)rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for [cn]His name. 42 And daily (QM)in the temple, and in every house, (QN)they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Seven Chosen to Serve

Now in those days, (QO)when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the (QP)Hellenists,[co] because their widows were neglected (QQ)in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, (QR)“It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, (QS)seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this (QT)business; but we (QU)will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, (QV)a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and (QW)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and (QX)Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, whom they set before the apostles; and (QY)when they had prayed, (QZ)they laid hands on them.

Then (RA)the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many (RB)of the priests were obedient to the faith.
