Isaiah 52:13-66:18

The Exalted Servant

13 Behold, My (A)servant will prosper,
He will be high and lifted up and [a]greatly (B)exalted.
14 Just as many were astonished at you, My people,
So His (C)appearance was marred more than any man
And His form more than the sons of men.
15 Thus He will (D)sprinkle many nations,
Kings will (E)shut their mouths on account of Him;
For (F)what had not been told them they will see,
And what they had not heard they will understand.

The Suffering Servant

53 (G)Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a (H)tender [b]shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has (I)no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should [c]be attracted to Him.
He was (J)despised and forsaken of men,
A man of [d]sorrows and (K)acquainted with [e]grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was (L)despised, and we did not (M)esteem Him.

Surely our [f]griefs He Himself (N)bore,
And our [g]sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
[h]Smitten of (O)God, and afflicted.
But He was [i]pierced through for (P)our transgressions,
He was crushed for (Q)our iniquities;
The (R)chastening for our [j]well-being fell upon Him,
And by (S)His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To [k]fall on Him.

He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not (T)open His mouth;
(U)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the [l]living
(V)For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a (W)rich man in His death,
(X)Because He had (Y)done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.

10 But the Lord was pleased
To (Z)crush Him, [m](AA)putting Him to grief;
If [n]He would render Himself as a guilt (AB)offering,
He will see (AC)His [o]offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the [p]good (AD)pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
11 As a result of the [q]anguish of His soul,
He will (AE)see [r]it and be satisfied;
By His (AF)knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will (AG)bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a (AH)portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out [s](AI)Himself to death,
And was (AJ)numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself (AK)bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.

The Fertility of Zion

54 (AL)Shout for joy, O barren one, you who have borne no child;
Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not travailed;
For the sons of the (AM)desolate one will be (AN)more numerous
Than the sons of the married woman,” says the Lord.
(AO)Enlarge the place of your tent;
[t]Stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, spare not;
Lengthen your (AP)cords
And strengthen your (AQ)pegs.
“For you will (AR)spread abroad to the right and to the left.
And your [u]descendants will (AS)possess nations
And will (AT)resettle the desolate cities.

“Fear not, for you will (AU)not be put to shame;
And do not feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced;
But you will forget the (AV)shame of your youth,
And the (AW)reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
“For your (AX)husband is your Maker,
Whose name is the Lord of hosts;
And your (AY)Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,
Who is called the (AZ)God of all the earth.
“For the Lord has called you,
Like a wife (BA)forsaken and grieved in spirit,
Even like a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,”
Says your God.
[v]For a (BB)brief moment I forsook you,
But with great compassion I will (BC)gather you.
“In an [w](BD)outburst of anger
I hid My face from you for a moment,
But with everlasting (BE)lovingkindness I will (BF)have compassion on you,”
Says the Lord your (BG)Redeemer.

“For [x]this is like the days of Noah to Me,
When I swore that the waters of Noah
Would (BH)not [y]flood the earth again;
So I have sworn that I will (BI)not be angry with you
Nor will I rebuke you.
10 “For the (BJ)mountains may be removed and the hills may shake,
But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you,
And My (BK)covenant of peace will not be shaken,”
Says (BL)the Lord who has compassion on you.

11 “O (BM)afflicted one, storm-tossed, and (BN)not comforted,
Behold, I will set your stones in antimony,
And your foundations I will (BO)lay in [z](BP)sapphires.
12 “Moreover, I will make your battlements of [aa]rubies,
And your gates of [ab]crystal,
And your entire [ac]wall of precious stones.
13 (BQ)All your sons will be [ad]taught of the Lord;
And the well-being of your sons will be (BR)great.
14 “In (BS)righteousness you will be established;
You will be far from (BT)oppression, for you will (BU)not fear;
And from (BV)terror, for it will not come near you.
15 “If anyone fiercely assails you it will not be from Me.
(BW)Whoever assails you will fall because of you.
16 “Behold, I Myself have created the smith who blows the fire of coals
And brings out a weapon for its work;
And I have created the destroyer to ruin.
17 (BX)No weapon that is formed against you will prosper;
And (BY)every tongue that [ae]accuses you in judgment you will condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their (BZ)vindication is from Me,” declares the Lord.

The Free Offer of Mercy

55 “Ho! Every one who (CA)thirsts, come to the waters;
And you who have (CB)no [af]money come, buy and eat.
Come, buy (CC)wine and milk
(CD)Without money and without cost.
“Why do you [ag]spend money for what is (CE)not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and (CF)eat what is good,
And (CG)delight yourself in abundance.
(CH)Incline your ear and come to Me.
Listen, that [ah]you may (CI)live;
And I will make (CJ)an everlasting covenant with you,
According to the (CK)faithful mercies [ai]shown to David.
“Behold, I have made (CL)him a witness to the peoples,
A (CM)leader and commander for the peoples.
“Behold, you will call a (CN)nation you do not know,
And a nation which knows you not will (CO)run to you,
Because of the Lord your God, even the Holy One of Israel;
For He has (CP)glorified you.”

(CQ)Seek the Lord while He may be found;
(CR)Call upon Him while He is near.
(CS)Let the wicked forsake his way
And the unrighteous man his (CT)thoughts;
And let him (CU)return to the Lord,
And He will have (CV)compassion on him,
And to our God,
For He will (CW)abundantly pardon.
“For My thoughts are not (CX)your thoughts,
Nor are (CY)your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
“For (CZ)as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
10 “For as the (DA)rain and the snow come down from heaven,
And do not return there without watering the earth
And making it bear and sprout,
And furnishing (DB)seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
11 So will My (DC)word be which goes forth from My mouth;
It will (DD)not return to Me empty,
Without (DE)accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.
12 “For you will go out with (DF)joy
And be led forth with (DG)peace;
The (DH)mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you,
And all the (DI)trees of the field will clap their hands.
13 “Instead of the (DJ)thorn bush the (DK)cypress will come up,
And instead of the (DL)nettle the myrtle will come up,
And [aj]it will be a [ak](DM)memorial to the Lord,
For an everlasting (DN)sign which (DO)will not be cut off.”

Rewards for Obedience to God

56 Thus says the Lord,
(DP)Preserve justice and do righteousness,
For My (DQ)salvation is about to come
And My righteousness to be revealed.
“How (DR)blessed is the man who does this,
And the son of man who (DS)takes hold of it;
Who (DT)keeps from profaning the sabbath,
And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
Let not the (DU)foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say,
“The Lord will surely separate me from His people.”
Nor let the (DV)eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.”

For thus says the Lord,

“To the eunuchs who (DW)keep My sabbaths,
And choose what pleases Me,
And (DX)hold fast My covenant,
To them I will give in My (DY)house and within My (DZ)walls a memorial,
And a name better than that of sons and daughters;
I will give [al]them an everlasting (EA)name which (EB)will not be cut off.

“Also the (EC)foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
To minister to Him, and to love the name of the Lord,
To be His servants, every one who (ED)keeps from profaning the sabbath
And holds fast My covenant;
Even (EE)those I will bring to My (EF)holy mountain
And (EG)make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on (EH)My altar;
For (EI)My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.”
The Lord [am]God, who (EJ)gathers the dispersed of Israel, declares,
“Yet (EK)others I will gather to [an]them, to those already gathered.”

All you (EL)beasts of the field,
All you beasts in the forest,
Come to eat.
10 His (EM)watchmen are (EN)blind,
All of them know nothing.
All of them are mute dogs unable to bark,
[ao]Dreamers lying down, who love to slumber;
11 And the dogs are [ap](EO)greedy, they [aq]are not satisfied.
And they are shepherds who have (EP)no understanding;
They have all (EQ)turned to their own way,
Each one to his unjust gain, to the last one.
12 “Come,” they say, “let [ar]us get (ER)wine, and let us drink heavily of strong drink;
And (ES)tomorrow will be like today, only more so.”

Evil Leaders Rebuked

57 The righteous man perishes, and no man (ET)takes it to heart;
And devout men are taken away, while no one understands.
For the righteous man is taken away from (EU)evil,
He enters into peace;
They rest in their [as]beds,
Each one who (EV)walked in his upright way.
“But come here, you sons of a (EW)sorceress,
(EX)Offspring of an adulterer and [at]a (EY)prostitute.
“Against whom do you jest?
Against whom do you open wide your mouth
And stick out your tongue?
Are you not children of (EZ)rebellion,
Offspring of deceit,
Who inflame yourselves among the [au](FA)oaks,
(FB)Under every luxuriant tree,
Who (FC)slaughter the children in the [av]ravines,
Under the clefts of the crags?
“Among the [aw](FD)smooth stones of the [ax]ravine
Is your portion, [ay]they are your lot;
Even to them you have (FE)poured out a drink offering,
You have made a grain offering.
Shall I [az](FF)relent concerning these things?
“Upon a (FG)high and lofty mountain
You have (FH)made your bed.
You also went up there to offer sacrifice.
“Behind the door and the doorpost
You have set up your sign;
Indeed, far removed from Me, you have (FI)uncovered yourself,
And have gone up and made your bed wide.
And you have made an agreement for yourself with them,
You have loved their [ba]bed,
You have looked on their [bb]manhood.
“You have journeyed to the king with oil
And increased your perfumes;
You have (FJ)sent your envoys a great distance
And made them go down to [bc]Sheol.
10 “You were tired out by the length of your road,
Yet you did not say, ‘(FK)It is hopeless.’
You found [bd]renewed strength,
Therefore you did not [be]faint.

11 “Of (FL)whom were you worried and fearful
When you lied, and did (FM)not remember Me
[bf]Nor (FN)give Me a thought?
Was I not silent even for a long time
So you do not fear Me?
12 “I will (FO)declare your righteousness and your (FP)deeds,
But they will not profit you.
13 “When you cry out, (FQ)let your collection of idols deliver you.
But the wind will carry all of them up,
And a breath will take them away.
But he who (FR)takes refuge in Me will (FS)inherit the land
And will (FT)possess My holy mountain.”

14 And it will be said,
(FU)Build up, build up, prepare the way,
Remove every obstacle out of the way of My people.”
15 For thus says the (FV)high and exalted One
Who [bg](FW)lives forever, whose name is Holy,
“I (FX)dwell on a high and holy place,
And also with the (FY)contrite and lowly of spirit
In order to (FZ)revive the spirit of the lowly
And to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 “For I will (GA)not contend forever,
(GB)Nor will I always be angry;
For the spirit would grow faint before Me,
And the (GC)breath of those whom I have made.
17 “Because of the iniquity of his (GD)unjust gain I was angry and struck him;
I hid My face and was angry,
And he went on (GE)turning away, in the way of his heart.
18 “I have seen his ways, but I will (GF)heal him;
I will (GG)lead him and (GH)restore comfort to him and to his mourners,
19 Creating the [bh](GI)praise of the lips.
(GJ)Peace, peace to him who is (GK)far and to him who is near,”
Says the Lord, “and I will heal him.”
20 But the (GL)wicked are like the tossing sea,
For it cannot be quiet,
And its waters toss up refuse and mud.
21 (GM)There is no peace,” says (GN)my God, “for the wicked.”

Observances of Fasts

58 (GO)Cry loudly, do not hold back;
Raise your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their (GP)transgression
And to the house of Jacob their sins.
“Yet they (GQ)seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways,
As a nation that has done (GR)righteousness
And (GS)has not forsaken the ordinance of their God.
They ask Me for just decisions,
They delight (GT)in the nearness of God.
‘Why have we (GU)fasted and You do not see?
Why have we humbled ourselves and You do not [bi]notice?’
Behold, on the (GV)day of your fast you find your desire,
And drive hard all your workers.
“Behold, you fast for contention and (GW)strife and to strike with a wicked fist.
You do not fast like you do today to (GX)make your voice heard on high.
“Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it for bowing [bj]one’s head like a reed
And for spreading out (GY)sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this a fast, even an (GZ)acceptable day to the Lord?
“Is this not the fast which I choose,
To (HA)loosen the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the bands of the yoke,
And to (HB)let the oppressed go free
And (HC)break every yoke?
“Is it not to (HD)divide your bread [bk]with the hungry
And (HE)bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the (HF)naked, to cover him;
And not to (HG)hide yourself from your own flesh?
“Then your (HH)light will break out like the dawn,
And your (HI)recovery will speedily spring forth;
And your (HJ)righteousness will go before you;
The glory of the (HK)Lord will be your rear guard.
“Then you will (HL)call, and the Lord will answer;
You will cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you (HM)remove the yoke from your midst,
The [bl](HN)pointing of the finger and (HO)speaking wickedness,
10 And if you [bm](HP)give yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the [bn]desire of the afflicted,
Then your (HQ)light will rise in darkness
And your gloom will become like midday.
11 “And the (HR)Lord will continually guide you,
And (HS)satisfy your [bo]desire in scorched places,
And (HT)give strength to your bones;
And you will be like a (HU)watered garden,
And like a (HV)spring of water whose waters do not [bp]fail.
12 “Those from among you will (HW)rebuild the ancient ruins;
You will (HX)raise up the age-old foundations;
And you will be called the repairer of the (HY)breach,
The restorer of the [bq]streets in which to dwell.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 “If because of the sabbath, you (HZ)turn your foot
From doing your own pleasure on My holy day,
And call the sabbath a (IA)delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable,
And honor it, desisting from your (IB)own ways,
From seeking your own pleasure
And (IC)speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take (ID)delight in the Lord,
And I will make you ride (IE)on the heights of the earth;
And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
For the (IF)mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Separation from God

59 Behold, (IG)the Lord’s hand is not so short
That it cannot save;
(IH)Nor is His ear so dull
That it cannot hear.
But your (II)iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His [br]face from you so that He does (IJ)not hear.
For your (IK)hands are defiled with blood
And your fingers with iniquity;
Your lips have spoken (IL)falsehood,
Your tongue mutters wickedness.
(IM)No one sues righteously and (IN)no one pleads [bs]honestly.
They (IO)trust in confusion and speak lies;
They (IP)conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity.
They hatch adders’ eggs and (IQ)weave the spider’s web;
He who eats of their eggs dies,
And from that which is crushed a snake breaks forth.
Their webs will not become clothing,
Nor will they (IR)cover themselves with their works;
Their (IS)works are works of iniquity,
And an (IT)act of violence is in their [bt]hands.
(IU)Their feet run to evil,
And they hasten to shed innocent blood;
(IV)Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity,
Devastation and destruction are in their highways.
They do not know the (IW)way of peace,
And there is (IX)no justice in their tracks;
They have made their paths crooked,
(IY)Whoever treads on [bu]them does not know peace.

A Confession of Wickedness

Therefore (IZ)justice is far from us,
And righteousness does not overtake us;
We (JA)hope for light, but behold, darkness,
For brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We (JB)grope along the wall like blind men,
We grope like those who have no eyes;
We (JC)stumble at midday as in the twilight,
Among those who are vigorous we are (JD)like dead men.
11 All of us growl like bears,
And (JE)moan sadly like doves;
We hope for (JF)justice, but there is none,
For salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our (JG)transgressions are multiplied before You,
And our (JH)sins [bv]testify against us;
For our transgressions are with us,
And [bw]we know our iniquities:
13 Transgressing and (JI)denying the Lord,
And turning away from our God,
Speaking (JJ)oppression and revolt,
Conceiving in and (JK)uttering from the heart lying words.
14 (JL)Justice is turned back,
And (JM)righteousness stands far away;
For truth has stumbled in the street,
And uprightness cannot enter.
15 Yes, truth is lacking;
And he who turns aside from evil (JN)makes himself a prey.
Now the Lord saw,
And it was [bx]displeasing in His sight (JO)that there was no justice.
16 And He saw that there was (JP)no man,
And was astonished that there was no one to intercede;
Then His (JQ)own arm brought salvation to Him,
And His righteousness upheld Him.
17 He put on (JR)righteousness like a breastplate,
And a (JS)helmet of salvation on His head;
And He put on (JT)garments of vengeance for clothing
And wrapped Himself with (JU)zeal as a mantle.
18 (JV)According to their [by]deeds, [bz]so He will repay,
Wrath to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies;
To the coastlands He will [ca]make recompense.
19 So they will fear the name of the Lord from the (JW)west
And His glory from the (JX)rising of the sun,
For He will (JY)come like a [cb]rushing stream
Which the wind of the Lord drives.
20 “A (JZ)Redeemer will come to Zion,
And to those who (KA)turn from transgression in Jacob,” declares the Lord.

21 “As for Me, this is My (KB)covenant with them,” says the Lord: “My (KC)Spirit which is upon you, and My (KD)words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your [cc]offspring, nor from the mouth of your [cd]offspring’s offspring,” says the Lord, “from now and forever.”

A Glorified Zion

60 (KE)Arise, shine; for your (KF)light has come,
And the (KG)glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
“For behold, (KH)darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His (KI)glory will appear upon you.
(KJ)Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

(KK)Lift up your eyes round about and see;
They all gather together, they (KL)come to you.
Your sons will come from afar,
And your (KM)daughters will be [ce]carried in the arms.
“Then you will see and be (KN)radiant,
And your heart will [cf]thrill and rejoice;
Because the (KO)abundance of the sea will be turned to you,
The (KP)wealth of the nations will come to you.
“A multitude of camels will cover you,
The young camels of Midian and (KQ)Ephah;
All those from (KR)Sheba will come;
They will bring (KS)gold and frankincense,
And will (KT)bear good news of the praises of the Lord.
“All the flocks of (KU)Kedar will be gathered together to you,
The rams of Nebaioth will minister to you;
They will go up with acceptance on My (KV)altar,
And I shall [cg](KW)glorify My [ch]glorious house.
(KX)Who are these who fly like a cloud
And like the doves to their [ci]lattices?
“Surely the (KY)coastlands will wait for Me;
And the (KZ)ships of Tarshish will come first,
To (LA)bring your sons from afar,
Their silver and their gold with them,
For the name of the Lord your God,
And for the Holy One of Israel because He has [cj](LB)glorified you.

10 (LC)Foreigners will build up your walls,
And their (LD)kings will minister to you;
For in My (LE)wrath I struck you,
And in My favor I have had compassion on you.
11 “Your (LF)gates will be open continually;
They will not be closed day or night,
So that men may (LG)bring to you the wealth of the nations,
With (LH)their kings led in procession.
12 “For the (LI)nation and the kingdom which will not serve you will perish,
And the nations will be utterly ruined.
13 “The (LJ)glory of Lebanon will come to you,
The (LK)juniper, the box tree and the cypress together,
To beautify the place of My sanctuary;
And I shall make the (LL)place of My feet glorious.
14 “The (LM)sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you,
And all those who despised you will bow themselves at the soles of your feet;
And they will call you the (LN)city of the Lord,
The (LO)Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Whereas you have been (LP)forsaken and (LQ)hated
With no one passing through,
I will make you an everlasting (LR)pride,
A joy from generation to generation.
16 “You will also (LS)suck the milk of nations
And suck the breast of kings;
Then you will know that I, the Lord, am your (LT)Savior
And your (LU)Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 “Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
And instead of iron I will bring silver,
And instead of wood, bronze,
And instead of stones, iron.
And I will make peace your administrators
And righteousness your overseers.
18 (LV)Violence will not be heard again in your land,
Nor (LW)devastation or destruction within your borders;
But you will call your (LX)walls salvation, and your (LY)gates praise.
19 “No longer will you have the (LZ)sun for light by day,
Nor for brightness will the moon give you light;
But you will have the (MA)Lord for an everlasting light,
And your (MB)God for your [ck]glory.
20 “Your (MC)sun will no longer set,
Nor will your moon wane;
For you will have the Lord for an everlasting light,
And the days of your (MD)mourning will be over.
21 “Then all your (ME)people will be righteous;
They will (MF)possess the land forever,
The branch of [cl]My planting,
The (MG)work of My hands,
That I may be (MH)glorified.
22 “The (MI)smallest one will become a [cm]clan,
And the least one a mighty nation.
I, the Lord, will hasten it in its time.”

Exaltation of the Afflicted

61 The (MJ)Spirit of the Lord [cn]God is upon me,
Because the Lord has anointed me
To (MK)bring good news to the [co](ML)afflicted;
He has sent me to (MM)bind up the brokenhearted,
To (MN)proclaim liberty to captives
And [cp]freedom to prisoners;
To (MO)proclaim the favorable year of the Lord
And the (MP)day of vengeance of our God;
To (MQ)comfort all who mourn,
To (MR)grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The (MS)oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
So they will be called [cq](MT)oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

Then they will (MU)rebuild the ancient ruins,
They will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
(MV)Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And [cr]foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
But you will be called the (MW)priests of the Lord;
You will be spoken of as (MX)ministers of our God.
You will eat the (MY)wealth of nations,
And in their [cs]riches you will boast.
Instead of your (MZ)shame you will have a (NA)double portion,
And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land,
(NB)Everlasting joy will be theirs.
For I, the Lord, (NC)love justice,
I hate robbery [ct]in the burnt offering;
And I will faithfully give them their recompense
And make an (ND)everlasting covenant with them.
Then their offspring will be known among the nations,
And their descendants in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them will recognize them
Because they are the (NE)offspring whom the Lord has blessed.

10 I will (NF)rejoice greatly in the Lord,
My soul will exult in (NG)my God;
For He has (NH)clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
And (NI)as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the (NJ)earth brings forth its sprouts,
And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up,
So the Lord [cu]God will (NK)cause (NL)righteousness and praise
To spring up before all the nations.

Zion’s Glory and New Name

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet,
Until her (NM)righteousness goes forth like brightness,
And her (NN)salvation like a torch that is burning.
The (NO)nations will see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory;
And you will be called by a new (NP)name
Which the mouth of the Lord will designate.
You will also be a (NQ)crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
And a royal [cv]diadem in the hand of your God.
It will no longer be said to you, “[cw](NR)Forsaken,”
Nor to your land will it any longer be said, “[cx]Desolate”;
But you will be called, “[cy]My delight is in her,”
And your land, “[cz](NS)Married”;
For the (NT)Lord delights in you,
And to Him your land will be married.
For as a young man marries a virgin,
So your sons will marry you;
And as the [da]bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
So your (NU)God will rejoice over you.

On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed (NV)watchmen;
All day and all night they will never keep silent.
You who (NW)remind the Lord, take no rest for yourselves;
And (NX)give Him no rest until He establishes
And makes (NY)Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
(NZ)The Lord has sworn by His right hand and by His strong arm,
“I will (OA)never again give your grain as food for your enemies;
Nor will [db]foreigners drink your new wine for which you have labored.”
But those who (OB)garner it will eat it and praise the Lord;
And those who gather it will drink it in the courts of My sanctuary.

10 Go through, (OC)go through the gates,
Clear the way [dc]for the people;
(OD)Build up, build up the (OE)highway,
Remove the stones, lift up a (OF)standard over the peoples.
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the (OG)end of the earth,
(OH)Say to the daughter of Zion, “Lo, your (OI)salvation comes;
(OJ)Behold His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.”
12 And they will call them, “(OK)The holy people,
The (OL)redeemed of the Lord”;
And you will be called, “Sought out, a city (OM)not forsaken.”

God’s Vengeance on the Nations

63 Who is this who comes from (ON)Edom,
With (OO)garments of [dd]glowing colors from (OP)Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His apparel,
[de]Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I who speak in righteousness, (OQ)mighty to save.”
Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like the one who (OR)treads in the wine press?
(OS)I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no man with Me.
I also (OT)trod them in My anger
And (OU)trampled them in My wrath;
And (OV)their [df]lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I [dg]stained all My raiment.
“For the (OW)day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
“I looked, and there was (OX)no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My (OY)own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.
“I (OZ)trod down the peoples in My anger
And made them (PA)drunk in My wrath,
And I [dh]poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

God’s Ancient Mercies Recalled

I shall make mention of the (PB)lovingkindnesses of the Lord, the praises of the Lord,
According to all that the Lord has granted us,
And the great (PC)goodness toward the house of Israel,
Which He has granted them according to His (PD)compassion
And according to the abundance of His lovingkindnesses.
For He said, “Surely, they are (PE)My people,
Sons who will not deal falsely.”
So He became their (PF)Savior.
In all their affliction [di](PG)He was afflicted,
And the (PH)angel of His presence saved them;
In His (PI)love and in His mercy He (PJ)redeemed them,
And He (PK)lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they (PL)rebelled
And grieved His (PM)Holy Spirit;
Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy,
He fought against them.
11 Then (PN)His people remembered the days of old, of Moses.
Where is (PO)He who brought them up out of the sea with the [dj]shepherds of His flock?
Where is He who (PP)put His Holy Spirit in the midst of [dk]them,
12 Who caused His (PQ)glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,
Who (PR)divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name,
13 Who led them through the depths?
Like the horse in the wilderness, they did not (PS)stumble;
14 As the cattle which go down into the valley,
The Spirit of the (PT)Lord gave [dl]them rest.
So You (PU)led Your people,
To make for Yourself a glorious name.

“You Are Our Father”

15 (PV)Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious (PW)habitation;
Where are Your (PX)zeal and Your mighty deeds?
The (PY)stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me.
16 For You are our (PZ)Father, though (QA)Abraham does not know us
And Israel does not recognize us.
You, O Lord, are our Father,
Our (QB)Redeemer from of old is Your name.
17 Why, O Lord, do You (QC)cause us to stray from Your ways
And (QD)harden our heart from fearing You?
(QE)Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage.
18 Your holy people possessed Your sanctuary for a little while,
Our adversaries have (QF)trodden it down.
19 We have become like those over whom You have never ruled,
Like those who were not called by Your name.

Prayer for Mercy and Help

64 [dm]Oh, that You would rend the heavens and (QG)come down,
That the mountains might (QH)quake at Your presence—
[dn]As fire kindles the brushwood, as fire causes water to boil—
To make Your name known to Your adversaries,
That the (QI)nations may tremble at Your presence!
When You did (QJ)awesome things which we did not expect,
You came down, the mountains quaked at Your presence.
For from days of old (QK)they have not heard or perceived by ear,
Nor has the eye seen a God besides You,
Who acts in behalf of the one who (QL)waits for Him.
You (QM)meet him who rejoices in (QN)doing righteousness,
Who (QO)remembers You in Your ways.
Behold, (QP)You were angry, for we sinned,
We continued in them a long time;
And shall we be saved?
For all of us have become like one who is (QQ)unclean,
And all our (QR)righteous deeds are like a filthy garment;
And all of us (QS)wither like a leaf,
And our (QT)iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
There is (QU)no one who calls on Your name,
Who arouses himself to take hold of You;
For You have (QV)hidden Your face from us
And have [do]delivered us into the power of our iniquities.

But now, O Lord, (QW)You are our Father,
We are the (QX)clay, and You our potter;
And all of us are the (QY)work of Your hand.
Do not be (QZ)angry beyond measure, O Lord,
(RA)Nor remember iniquity forever;
Behold, look now, all of us are (RB)Your people.
10 Your (RC)holy cities have become a (RD)wilderness,
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and beautiful (RE)house,
Where our fathers praised You,
Has been burned by fire;
And (RF)all our precious things have become a ruin.
12 Will You (RG)restrain Yourself at these things, O Lord?
Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?

A Rebellious People

65 “I permitted Myself to be sought by (RH)those who did not ask for Me;
I permitted Myself to be found by those who did not seek Me.
I said, ‘Here am I, here am I,’
To a nation which (RI)did not call on My name.
(RJ)I have spread out My hands all day long to a (RK)rebellious people,
Who walk in the way which is not good, [dp]following their own (RL)thoughts,
A people who continually (RM)provoke Me to My face,
Offering sacrifices in (RN)gardens and (RO)burning incense on bricks;
Who sit among graves and spend the night in secret places;
Who (RP)eat swine’s flesh,
And the broth of unclean meat is in their pots.
“Who say, ‘(RQ)Keep to yourself, do not come near me,
For I am holier than you!’
These are smoke in My [dq]nostrils,
A fire that burns all the day.
“Behold, it is written before Me,
I will (RR)not keep silent, but (RS)I will repay;
I will even repay into their bosom,
Both [dr]their own (RT)iniquities and the iniquities of their fathers together,” says the Lord.
“Because they have (RU)burned incense on the mountains
And (RV)scorned Me on the hills,
Therefore I will (RW)measure their former work into their bosom.”

Thus says the Lord,

“As the new wine is found in the cluster,
And one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for there is [ds]benefit in it,’
So I will act on behalf of My servants
In order (RX)not to destroy [dt]all of them.
“I will bring forth (RY)offspring from Jacob,
And an (RZ)heir of My mountains from Judah;
Even (SA)My chosen ones shall inherit it,
And (SB)My servants will dwell there.
10 (SC)Sharon will be a pasture land for flocks,
And the (SD)valley of Achor a resting place for herds,
For My people who (SE)seek Me.
11 “But you who (SF)forsake the Lord,
Who forget My (SG)holy mountain,
Who set a table for [du]Fortune,
And who fill cups with mixed wine for [dv]Destiny,
12 I will destine you for the (SH)sword,
And all of you will bow down to the (SI)slaughter.
Because I called, but you (SJ)did not answer;
I spoke, but you did not hear.
And you did evil in My sight
And chose that in which I did not delight.”

13 Therefore, thus says the Lord [dw]God,

“Behold, My servants will (SK)eat, but you will be (SL)hungry.
Behold, My servants will (SM)drink, but you will be (SN)thirsty.
Behold, My servants will (SO)rejoice, but you will be (SP)put to shame.
14 “Behold, My servants will (SQ)shout joyfully with a glad heart,
But you will (SR)cry out with a [dx]heavy heart,
And you will wail with a broken spirit.
15 “You will leave your name for a (SS)curse to My chosen ones,
And the Lord [dy]God will slay you.
But [dz]My servants will be called by (ST)another name.
16 “Because he who [ea]is blessed in the earth
Will [eb]be blessed by the (SU)God of truth;
And he who swears in the earth
Will (SV)swear by the God of truth;
Because the former troubles are forgotten,
And because they are hidden from My sight!

New Heavens and a New Earth

17 “For behold, I create (SW)new heavens and a new earth;
And the (SX)former things will not be remembered or come to [ec]mind.
18 “But be (SY)glad and rejoice forever in what I create;
For behold, I create Jerusalem for rejoicing
And her people for gladness.
19 “I will also (SZ)rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in My people;
And there will no longer be heard in her
The voice of (TA)weeping and the sound of crying.
20 “No longer will there be [ed]in it an infant who lives but a few days,
Or an old man who does (TB)not [ee]live out his days;
For the youth will die at the age of one hundred
And the [ef](TC)one who does not reach the age of one hundred
Will be thought accursed.
21 “They will (TD)build houses and inhabit them;
They will also (TE)plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 “They will not build and (TF)another inhabit,
They will not plant and another eat;
For (TG)as the [eg]lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people,
And My chosen ones will (TH)wear out the work of their hands.
23 “They will (TI)not labor in vain,
Or bear children for calamity;
For they are the [eh](TJ)offspring of those blessed by the Lord,
And their descendants with them.

24 It will also come to pass that before they call, I will (TK)answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear. 25 The (TL)wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the (TM)lion will eat straw like the ox; and (TN)dust will be the serpent’s food. They will (TO)do no evil or harm in all My (TP)holy mountain,” says the Lord.

Heaven Is God’s Throne

66 Thus says the Lord,

(TQ)Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.
Where then is a (TR)house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that [ei]I may rest?
“For (TS)My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and (TT)contrite of spirit, and who (TU)trembles at My word.

Hypocrisy Rebuked

But he who kills an ox is like one who slays a man;
He who sacrifices a lamb is like the one who breaks a dog’s neck;
He who offers a grain offering is like one who offers (TV)swine’s blood;
He who [ej](TW)burns incense is like the one who blesses an idol.
As they have chosen their (TX)own ways,
And their soul delights in their (TY)abominations,
So I will (TZ)choose their [ek]punishments
And will (UA)bring on them what they dread.
Because I called, but (UB)no one answered;
I spoke, but they did not listen.
And they did (UC)evil in My sight
And chose that in which I did not delight.”
Hear the word of the Lord, you who (UD)tremble at His word:
“Your brothers who (UE)hate you, who (UF)exclude you for My name’s sake,
Have said, ‘Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy.’
But (UG)they will be put to shame.
“A voice of uproar from the city, a voice from the temple,
The voice of the Lord who is (UH)rendering recompense to His enemies.

“Before she travailed, (UI)she brought forth;
Before her pain came, (UJ)she gave birth to a boy.
(UK)Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things?
Can a land be [el]born in one day?
Can a nation be brought forth all at once?
As soon as Zion travailed, she also brought forth her sons.
“Shall I bring to the point of birth and (UL)not give delivery?” says the Lord.
“Or shall I who gives delivery shut the womb?” says your God.

Joy in Jerusalem’s Future

10 “Be (UM)joyful with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who (UN)love her;
Be exceedingly (UO)glad with her, all you who mourn over her,
11 That you may nurse and (UP)be satisfied with her comforting breasts,
That you may suck and be delighted with her (UQ)bountiful bosom.”
12 For thus says the Lord, “Behold, I extend (UR)peace to her like a river,
And the (US)glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
And you will [em]be nursed, you will be (UT)carried on the [en]hip and fondled on the knees.
13 “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will (UU)comfort you;
And you will be comforted in Jerusalem.”
14 Then you will (UV)see this, and your (UW)heart will be glad,
And your (UX)bones will flourish like the new grass;
And the (UY)hand of the Lord will be made known to His servants,
But He will be (UZ)indignant toward His enemies.
15 For behold, the Lord will come in (VA)fire
And His (VB)chariots like the whirlwind,
To render His anger with fury,
And His rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For the Lord will execute judgment by (VC)fire
And by His (VD)sword on all flesh,
And those slain by the Lord will be many.
17 “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go to the (VE)gardens,
[eo]Following one in the center,
Who eat (VF)swine’s flesh, detestable things and mice,
Will (VG)come to an end altogether,” declares the Lord.

18 “For I [ep]know their works and their (VH)thoughts; [eq]the time is coming to (VI)gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and see My glory.
