Psalm 109-134

Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

109 O (A)God of my praise,
(B)Do not be silent!
For they have opened the [a]wicked and (C)deceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken [b]against me with a (D)lying tongue.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me (E)without cause.
In return (F)for my love they act as my accusers;
But (G)I am in prayer.
Thus they have [c](H)repaid me evil for good
And (I)hatred for my love.

Appoint a wicked man over him,
And let an [d](J)accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him (K)come forth guilty,
And let his (L)prayer become sin.
Let (M)his days be few;
Let (N)another take his office.
Let his (O)children be fatherless
And his (P)wife a widow.
10 Let his (Q)children wander about and beg;
And let them (R)seek sustenance [e]far from their ruined homes.
11 Let (S)the creditor [f]seize all that he has,
And let (T)strangers plunder the product of his labor.
12 Let there be none to [g](U)extend lovingkindness to him,
Nor (V)any to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13 Let his (W)posterity be [h]cut off;
In a following generation let their (X)name be blotted out.

14 Let (Y)the iniquity of his fathers be remembered [i]before the Lord,
And do not let the sin of his mother be (Z)blotted out.
15 Let (AA)them be before the Lord continually,
That He may (AB)cut off their memory from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness,
But persecuted the (AC)afflicted and needy man,
And the (AD)despondent in heart, to (AE)put them to death.
17 He also loved cursing, so (AF)it came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18 But he (AG)clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it (AH)entered into [j]his body like water
And like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be to him as (AI)a garment with which he covers himself,
And for a belt with which he constantly (AJ)girds himself.
20 [k]Let this be the (AK)reward of my accusers from the Lord,
And of those who (AL)speak evil against my soul.

21 But You, O [l]God, the Lord, deal kindly with me (AM)for Your name’s sake;
Because (AN)Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me;
22 For (AO)I am afflicted and needy,
And [m]my heart is (AP)wounded within me.
23 I am passing (AQ)like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off (AR)like the locust.
24 My (AS)knees [n]are weak from (AT)fasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25 I also have become a (AU)reproach to them;
When they see me, they (AV)wag their head.

26 (AW)Help me, O Lord my God;
Save me according to Your lovingkindness.
27 [o]And let them (AX)know that this is Your hand;
You, Lord, have done it.
28 (AY)Let them curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they shall be ashamed,
But Your (AZ)servant shall be glad.
29 [p]Let (BA)my accusers be clothed with dishonor,
And [q]let them (BB)cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord;
And in the midst of many (BC)I will praise Him.
31 For He stands (BD)at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who (BE)judge his soul.

The Lord Gives Dominion to the King.

A Psalm of David.

110 (BF)The Lord says to my Lord:
(BG)Sit at My right hand
Until I make (BH)Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
The Lord will stretch forth Your strong (BI)scepter from Zion, saying,
(BJ)Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
Your (BK)people [r]will volunteer freely in the day of Your [s]power;
(BL)In [t]holy array, from the womb of the dawn,
[u]Your youth are to You as the (BM)dew.

(BN)The Lord has sworn and will (BO)not [v]change His mind,
“You are a (BP)priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord is (BQ)at Your right hand;
He [w]will (BR)shatter kings in the (BS)day of His wrath.
He will (BT)judge among the nations,
He [x]will fill them with (BU)corpses,
He [y]will (BV)shatter the [z]chief men over a broad country.
He will (BW)drink from the brook by the wayside;
Therefore He will (BX)lift up His head.

The Lord Praised for His Goodness.

111 [aa]Praise [ab]the Lord!
I (BY)will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the (BZ)company of the upright and in the assembly.
(CA)Great are the works of the Lord;
They are [ac](CB)studied by all who delight in them.
[ad](CC)Splendid and majestic is His work,
And (CD)His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His [ae]wonders [af]to be remembered;
The Lord is (CE)gracious and compassionate.
He has (CF)given [ag]food to those who [ah]fear Him;
He will (CG)remember His covenant forever.
He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the heritage of the nations.

The works of His hands are [ai](CH)truth and justice;
All His precepts (CI)are [aj]sure.
They are (CJ)upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in [ak](CK)truth and uprightness.
He has sent (CL)redemption to His people;
He has [al]ordained His covenant forever;
(CM)Holy and [am]awesome is His name.
10 The [an](CN)fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A (CO)good understanding have all those who [ao]do His commandments;
His (CP)praise endures forever.

Prosperity of the One Who Fears the Lord.

112 [ap]Praise [aq]the Lord!
How (CQ)blessed is the man who [ar]fears the Lord,
Who greatly (CR)delights in His commandments.
His [as](CS)descendants will be mighty [at]on earth;
The generation of the (CT)upright will be blessed.
(CU)Wealth and riches are in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.
Light arises in the darkness (CV)for the upright;
He is (CW)gracious and compassionate and righteous.
It is well with the man who (CX)is gracious and lends;
He will [au]maintain his cause in judgment.
For he will (CY)never be shaken;
The (CZ)righteous will be [av]remembered forever.

He will not fear (DA)evil tidings;
His (DB)heart is steadfast, (DC)trusting in the Lord.
His (DD)heart is upheld, he (DE)will not fear,
Until he (DF)looks with satisfaction on his adversaries.
[aw]He (DG)has given freely to the poor,
His righteousness endures forever;
His (DH)horn will be exalted in honor.

10 The (DI)wicked will see it and be [ax]vexed,
He will (DJ)gnash his teeth and (DK)melt away;
The (DL)desire of the wicked will perish.

The Lord Exalts the Humble.

113 [ay]Praise [az]the Lord!
(DM)Praise, O (DN)servants of the Lord,
Praise the name of the Lord.
(DO)Blessed be the name of the Lord
From this time forth and forever.
(DP)From the rising of the sun to its setting
The (DQ)name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is (DR)high above all nations;
His (DS)glory is above the heavens.

(DT)Who is like the Lord our God,
Who (DU)is enthroned on high,
Who [ba](DV)humbles Himself to behold
The things that are in heaven and in the earth?
He (DW)raises the poor from the dust
And lifts the needy from the ash heap,
To make them (DX)sit with [bb]princes,
With the [bc]princes of His people.
He (DY)makes the barren woman abide in the house
As a joyful mother of children.
[bd]Praise [be]the Lord!

God’s Deliverance of Israel from Egypt.

114 When Israel went forth (DZ)from Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of (EA)strange language,
Judah became (EB)His sanctuary,
Israel, (EC)His dominion.

The (ED)sea looked and fled;
The (EE)Jordan turned back.
The mountains (EF)skipped like rams,
The hills, like lambs.
What (EG)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?

(EH)Tremble, O earth, before the Lord,
Before the God of Jacob,
Who (EI)turned the rock into a (EJ)pool of water,
The (EK)flint into a fountain of water.

Heathen Idols Contrasted with the Lord.

115 (EL)Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
But (EM)to Your name give glory
Because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your [bf]truth.
(EN)Why should the nations say,
(EO)Where, now, is their God?”
But our (EP)God is in the heavens;
He (EQ)does whatever He pleases.
Their (ER)idols are silver and gold,
The (ES)work of man’s hands.
They have mouths, but they (ET)cannot speak;
They have eyes, but they cannot see;
They have ears, but they cannot hear;
They have noses, but they cannot smell;
[bg]They have hands, but they cannot feel;
[bh]They have feet, but they cannot walk;
They cannot make a sound with their throat.
(EU)Those who make them [bi]will become like them,
Everyone who trusts in them.

O (EV)Israel, (EW)trust in the Lord;
He is their (EX)help and their shield.
10 O house of (EY)Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
11 You who [bj](EZ)fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
12 The Lord (FA)has been mindful of us; He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will (FB)bless those who [bk]fear the Lord,
(FC)The small together with the great.
14 May the Lord (FD)give you increase,
You and your children.
15 May you be blessed of the Lord,
(FE)Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The heavens are (FF)the heavens of the Lord,
But (FG)the earth He has given to the sons of men.
17 The (FH)dead do not praise [bl]the Lord,
Nor do any who go down into (FI)silence;
18 But as for us, we will (FJ)bless [bm]the Lord
From this time forth and forever.
[bn]Praise [bo]the Lord!

Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death.

116 (FK)I love the Lord, because He (FL)hears
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has (FM)inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live.
The (FN)cords of death encompassed me
And the [bp]terrors of [bq]Sheol [br]came upon me;
I found distress and sorrow.
Then (FO)I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I beseech You, [bs](FP)save my life!”

(FQ)Gracious is the Lord, and (FR)righteous;
Yes, our God is (FS)compassionate.
The Lord preserves (FT)the simple;
I was (FU)brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your (FV)rest, O my soul,
For the Lord has (FW)dealt bountifully with you.
For You have (FX)rescued my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
My feet from stumbling.
I shall walk before the Lord
In the [bt](FY)land of the living.
10 I (FZ)believed when I said,
“I am (GA)greatly afflicted.”
11 I (GB)said in my alarm,
(GC)All men are liars.”

12 What shall I (GD)render to the Lord
For all His (GE)benefits [bu]toward me?
13 I shall lift up the (GF)cup of salvation
And (GG)call upon the name of the Lord.
14 I shall (GH)pay my vows to the Lord,
Oh may it be (GI)in the presence of all His people.
15 (GJ)Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His godly ones.
16 O Lord, [bv]surely I am (GK)Your servant,
I am Your servant, the (GL)son of Your handmaid,
You have (GM)loosed my bonds.
17 To You I shall offer (GN)a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And (GO)call upon the name of the Lord.
18 I shall (GP)pay my vows to the Lord,
Oh may it be in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (GQ)courts of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, O (GR)Jerusalem.
[bw]Praise [bx]the Lord!

A Psalm of Praise.

117 (GS)Praise the Lord, all nations;
Laud Him, all peoples!
For His (GT)lovingkindness [by]is great toward us,
And the [bz](GU)truth of the Lord is everlasting.
[ca]Praise [cb]the Lord!

Thanksgiving for the Lord’s Saving Goodness.

118 (GV)Give thanks to the Lord, for (GW)He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Oh let (GX)Israel say,
“His lovingkindness is everlasting.”
Oh let the (GY)house of Aaron say,
“His lovingkindness is everlasting.”
Oh let those (GZ)who [cc]fear the Lord say,
“His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

From my (HA)distress I called upon [cd]the Lord;
[ce]The Lord answered me and (HB)set me in a large place.
The Lord is (HC)for me; I will (HD)not fear;
(HE)What can man do to me?
The Lord is for me (HF)among those who help me;
Therefore I will (HG)look with satisfaction on those who hate me.
It is (HH)better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in man.
It is (HI)better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in princes.

10 All nations (HJ)surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will surely (HK)cut them off.
11 They (HL)surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me;
In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
12 They surrounded me (HM)like bees;
They were extinguished as a (HN)fire of thorns;
In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
13 You (HO)pushed me violently so that I [cf]was falling,
But the Lord (HP)helped me.
14 [cg](HQ)The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become (HR)my salvation.

15 The sound of (HS)joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous;
The (HT)right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16 The (HU)right hand of the Lord is exalted;
The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
17 I (HV)will not die, but live,
And (HW)tell of the works of [ch]the Lord.
18 [ci]The Lord has (HX)disciplined me severely,
But He has (HY)not given me over to death.

19 (HZ)Open to me the gates of righteousness;
I shall enter through them, I shall give thanks to [cj]the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
The (IA)righteous will enter through it.
21 I shall give thanks to You, for You have (IB)answered me,
And You have (IC)become my salvation.

22 The (ID)stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief corner stone.
23 This is [ck]the Lord’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the Lord has made;
Let us (IE)rejoice and be glad in it.
25 O Lord, (IF)do save, we beseech You;
O Lord, we beseech You, do send (IG)prosperity!
26 (IH)Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord;
We have (II)blessed you from the house of the Lord.
27 (IJ)The Lord is God, and He has given us (IK)light;
Bind the festival sacrifice with cords [cl]to the (IL)horns of the altar.
28 (IM)You are my God, and I give thanks to You;
You are my God, (IN)I extol You.
29 (IO)Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Meditations and Prayers Relating to the Law of God.

Aleph.

119 How blessed are those whose way is [cm](IP)blameless,
Who (IQ)walk in the law of the Lord.
How blessed are those who (IR)observe His testimonies,
Who (IS)seek Him (IT)with all their heart.
They also (IU)do no unrighteousness;
They walk in His ways.
You have [cn](IV)ordained Your precepts,
[co]That we should keep them diligently.
Oh that my (IW)ways may be established
To (IX)keep Your statutes!
Then I (IY)shall not be ashamed
When I look [cp]upon all Your commandments.
I shall (IZ)give thanks to You with uprightness of heart,
When I learn Your righteous judgments.
I shall keep Your statutes;
Do not (JA)forsake me utterly!

Beth.

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By (JB)keeping it according to Your word.
10 With (JC)all my heart I have sought You;
Do not let me (JD)wander from Your commandments.
11 Your word I have (JE)treasured in my heart,
That I may not sin against You.
12 Blessed are You, O Lord;
(JF)Teach me Your statutes.
13 With my lips I have (JG)told of
All the (JH)ordinances of Your mouth.
14 I have (JI)rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,
[cq]As much as in all riches.
15 I will (JJ)meditate on Your precepts
And [cr]regard (JK)Your ways.
16 I shall [cs](JL)delight in Your statutes;
I shall (JM)not forget Your word.

Gimel.

17 (JN)Deal bountifully with Your servant,
That I may live and keep Your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
Wonderful things from Your law.
19 I am a (JO)stranger in the earth;
Do not hide Your commandments from me.
20 My soul is crushed [ct](JP)with longing
After Your ordinances at all times.
21 You (JQ)rebuke the arrogant, [cu]the (JR)cursed,
Who (JS)wander from Your commandments.
22 (JT)Take away reproach and contempt from me,
For I (JU)observe Your testimonies.
23 Even though (JV)princes sit and talk against me,
Your servant (JW)meditates on Your statutes.
24 Your testimonies also are my (JX)delight;
They are [cv]my counselors.

Daleth.

25 My (JY)soul cleaves to the dust;
(JZ)Revive me (KA)according to Your word.
26 I have told of my ways, and You have answered me;
(KB)Teach me Your statutes.
27 Make me understand the way of Your precepts,
So I will (KC)meditate on Your wonders.
28 My (KD)soul [cw]weeps because of grief;
(KE)Strengthen me according to Your word.
29 Remove the false way from me,
And graciously grant me Your law.
30 I have chosen the faithful way;
I have [cx]placed Your ordinances before me.
31 I (KF)cling to Your testimonies;
O Lord, do not put me to shame!
32 I shall run the way of Your commandments,
For You will (KG)enlarge my heart.

He.

33 (KH)Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes,
And I shall observe it to the end.
34 (KI)Give me understanding, that I may (KJ)observe Your law
And keep it (KK)with all my heart.
35 Make me walk in the (KL)path of Your commandments,
For I (KM)delight in it.
36 (KN)Incline my heart to Your testimonies
And not to (KO)dishonest gain.
37 Turn away my (KP)eyes from looking at vanity,
And (KQ)revive me in Your ways.
38 (KR)Establish Your [cy]word to Your servant,
[cz]As that which produces reverence for You.
39 (KS)Turn away my reproach which I dread,
For Your ordinances are good.
40 Behold, I (KT)long for Your precepts;
Revive me through Your righteousness.

Vav.

41 May Your (KU)lovingkindnesses also come to me, O Lord,
Your salvation (KV)according to Your [da]word;
42 So I will have an (KW)answer for him who (KX)reproaches me,
For I trust in Your word.
43 And do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
For I [db](KY)wait for Your ordinances.
44 So I will (KZ)keep Your law continually,
Forever and ever.
45 And I will (LA)walk [dc]at liberty,
For I (LB)seek Your precepts.
46 I will also speak of Your testimonies (LC)before kings
And shall not be ashamed.
47 I shall [dd](LD)delight in Your commandments,
Which I (LE)love.
48 And I shall lift up my hands to Your commandments,
Which I (LF)love;
And I will (LG)meditate on Your statutes.

Zayin.

49 Remember the word to Your servant,
[de]In which You have made me hope.
50 This is my (LH)comfort in my affliction,
That Your word has [df]revived me.
51 The arrogant (LI)utterly deride me,
Yet I do not (LJ)turn aside from Your law.
52 I have (LK)remembered Your ordinances from [dg]of old, O Lord,
And comfort myself.
53 Burning (LL)indignation has seized me because of the wicked,
Who (LM)forsake Your law.
54 Your statutes are my songs
In the house of my (LN)pilgrimage.
55 O Lord, I (LO)remember Your name (LP)in the night,
And keep Your law.
56 This has become mine,
[dh]That I (LQ)observe Your precepts.

Heth.

57 The Lord is my (LR)portion;
I have [di]promised to (LS)keep Your words.
58 I (LT)sought Your favor (LU)with all my heart;
(LV)Be gracious to me (LW)according to Your [dj]word.
59 I (LX)considered my ways
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I hastened and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.
61 The (LY)cords of the wicked have encircled me,
But I have (LZ)not forgotten Your law.
62 At (MA)midnight I shall rise to give thanks to You
Because of Your (MB)righteous ordinances.
63 I am a (MC)companion of all those who [dk]fear You,
And of those who keep Your precepts.
64 (MD)The earth is full of Your lovingkindness, O Lord;
(ME)Teach me Your statutes.

Teth.

65 You have dealt well with Your servant,
O Lord, according to Your word.
66 Teach me good [dl](MF)discernment and knowledge,
For I believe in Your commandments.
67 (MG)Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.
68 You are (MH)good and (MI)do good;
(MJ)Teach me Your statutes.
69 The arrogant [dm]have (MK)forged a lie against me;
With all my heart I will (ML)observe Your precepts.
70 Their heart is [dn](MM)covered with fat,
But I (MN)delight in Your law.
71 It is (MO)good for me that I was afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
72 The (MP)law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Yodh.

73 (MQ)Your hands made me and [do]fashioned me;
(MR)Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.
74 May those who [dp]fear You (MS)see me and be glad,
Because I [dq](MT)wait for Your word.
75 I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are (MU)righteous,
And that (MV)in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
76 O may Your lovingkindness [dr]comfort me,
According to Your [ds]word to Your servant.
77 May (MW)Your compassion come to me that I may live,
For Your law is my (MX)delight.
78 May (MY)the arrogant be ashamed, for they subvert me (MZ)with a lie;
But I shall (NA)meditate on Your precepts.
79 May those who [dt]fear You turn to me,
Even those who know Your testimonies.
80 May my heart be [du](NB)blameless in Your statutes,
So that I will not (NC)be ashamed.

Kaph.

81 My (ND)soul languishes for Your salvation;
I [dv](NE)wait for Your word.
82 My (NF)eyes fail with longing for Your [dw]word,
[dx]While I say, “When will You comfort me?”
83 Though I have (NG)become like a wineskin in the smoke,
I do (NH)not forget Your statutes.
84 How many are the (NI)days of Your servant?
When will You (NJ)execute judgment on those who persecute me?
85 The arrogant have (NK)dug pits for me,
Men who are not [dy]in accord with Your law.
86 All Your commandments are (NL)faithful;
They have (NM)persecuted me with a lie; (NN)help me!
87 They almost destroyed me [dz]on earth,
But as for me, I (NO)did not forsake Your precepts.
88 Revive me according to Your lovingkindness,
So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.

Lamedh.

89 (NP)Forever, O Lord,
Your word [ea]is settled in heaven.
90 Your (NQ)faithfulness continues [eb]throughout all generations;
You (NR)established the earth, and it (NS)stands.
91 They stand this day according to Your (NT)ordinances,
For (NU)all things are Your servants.
92 If Your law had not been my (NV)delight,
Then I would have perished (NW)in my affliction.
93 I will (NX)never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have [ec](NY)revived me.
94 I am Yours, (NZ)save me;
For I have (OA)sought Your precepts.
95 The wicked (OB)wait for me to destroy me;
I shall diligently consider Your testimonies.
96 I have seen [ed]a limit to all perfection;
Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

Mem.

97 O how I (OC)love Your law!
It is my (OD)meditation all the day.
98 Your (OE)commandments make me wiser than my enemies,
For they are ever [ee]mine.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
For Your testimonies are my (OF)meditation.
100 I understand (OG)more than the aged,
Because I have (OH)observed Your precepts.
101 I have (OI)restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not (OJ)turned aside from Your ordinances,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How (OK)sweet are Your [ef]words to my [eg]taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 From Your precepts I (OL)get understanding;
Therefore I (OM)hate every false way.

Nun.

105 Your word is a (ON)lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
106 I have (OO)sworn and I will confirm it,
That I will keep Your righteous ordinances.
107 I am exceedingly (OP)afflicted;
[eh](OQ)Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.
108 O accept the (OR)freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord,
And (OS)teach me Your ordinances.
109 My [ei](OT)life is continually [ej]in my hand,
Yet I do not (OU)forget Your law.
110 The wicked have (OV)laid a snare for me,
Yet I have not (OW)gone astray from Your precepts.
111 I have (OX)inherited Your testimonies forever,
For they are the (OY)joy of my heart.
112 I have (OZ)inclined my heart to perform Your statutes
Forever, even (PA)to the end.

Samekh.

113 I hate those who are (PB)double-minded,
But I love Your (PC)law.
114 You are my (PD)hiding place and my (PE)shield;
I [ek](PF)wait for Your word.
115 (PG)Depart from me, evildoers,
That I may (PH)observe the commandments of my God.
116 (PI)Sustain me according to Your [el]word, that I may live;
And (PJ)do not let me be [em]ashamed of my hope.
117 Uphold me that I may be (PK)safe,
That I may (PL)have regard for Your statutes continually.
118 You have [en]rejected all those (PM)who wander from Your statutes,
For their deceitfulness is [eo]useless.
119 You have [ep]removed all the wicked of the earth like (PN)dross;
Therefore I (PO)love Your testimonies.
120 My flesh [eq](PP)trembles for fear of You,
And I am (PQ)afraid of Your judgments.

Ayin.

121 I have (PR)done justice and righteousness;
Do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Be (PS)surety for Your servant for good;
Do not let the arrogant (PT)oppress me.
123 My (PU)eyes fail with longing for Your salvation
And for Your righteous [er]word.
124 Deal with Your servant (PV)according to Your lovingkindness
And (PW)teach me Your statutes.
125 (PX)I am Your servant; (PY)give me understanding,
That I may know Your testimonies.
126 It is time for the Lord to (PZ)act,
For they have broken Your law.
127 Therefore I (QA)love Your commandments
Above gold, yes, above fine gold.
128 Therefore I esteem right all Your (QB)precepts concerning everything,
I (QC)hate every false way.

Pe.

129 Your testimonies are (QD)wonderful;
Therefore my soul (QE)observes them.
130 The (QF)unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives (QG)understanding to the simple.
131 I (QH)opened my mouth wide and (QI)panted,
For I (QJ)longed for Your commandments.
132 (QK)Turn to me and be gracious to me,
After Your manner [es]with those who love Your name.
133 Establish my (QL)footsteps in Your [et]word,
And do not let any iniquity (QM)have dominion over me.
134 (QN)Redeem me from the oppression of man,
That I may keep Your precepts.
135 (QO)Make Your face shine upon Your servant,
And (QP)teach me Your statutes.
136 My eyes [eu]shed (QQ)streams of water,
Because they (QR)do not keep Your law.

Tsadhe.

137 (QS)Righteous are You, O Lord,
And upright are Your judgments.
138 You have commanded Your testimonies in (QT)righteousness
And exceeding (QU)faithfulness.
139 My (QV)zeal has [ev]consumed me,
Because my adversaries have forgotten Your words.
140 Your [ew](QW)word is very [ex]pure,
Therefore Your servant (QX)loves it.
141 I am small and (QY)despised,
Yet I do not (QZ)forget Your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And (RA)Your law is truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have [ey]come upon me,
Yet Your commandments are my (RB)delight.
144 Your (RC)testimonies are righteous forever;
(RD)Give me understanding that I may live.

Qoph.

145 I cried (RE)with all my heart; answer me, O Lord!
I will (RF)observe Your statutes.
146 I cried to You; (RG)save me
And I shall keep Your testimonies.
147 I [ez](RH)rise before dawn and cry for help;
I [fa]wait for Your words.
148 My eyes anticipate the (RI)night watches,
That I may (RJ)meditate on Your [fb]word.
149 Hear my voice (RK)according to Your lovingkindness;
(RL)Revive me, O Lord, according to Your ordinances.
150 Those who follow after wickedness draw near;
They are far from Your law.
151 You are (RM)near, O Lord,
And all Your commandments are (RN)truth.
152 Of old I have (RO)known from Your testimonies
That You have founded them (RP)forever.

Resh.

153 (RQ)Look upon my (RR)affliction and rescue me,
For I do not (RS)forget Your law.
154 (RT)Plead my cause and (RU)redeem me;
Revive me according to Your [fc]word.
155 Salvation is (RV)far from the wicked,
For they (RW)do not seek Your statutes.
156 [fd](RX)Great are Your mercies, O Lord;
Revive me according to Your ordinances.
157 Many are my (RY)persecutors and my adversaries,
Yet I do not (RZ)turn aside from Your testimonies.
158 I behold the (SA)treacherous and (SB)loathe them,
Because they do not keep Your [fe]word.
159 Consider how I (SC)love Your precepts;
(SD)Revive me, O Lord, according to Your lovingkindness.
160 The (SE)sum of Your word is (SF)truth,
And every one of Your righteous ordinances (SG)is everlasting.

Shin.

161 (SH)Princes persecute me without cause,
But my heart (SI)stands in awe of Your words.
162 I (SJ)rejoice at Your [ff]word,
As one who (SK)finds great spoil.
163 I (SL)hate and despise falsehood,
But I (SM)love Your law.
164 Seven times a day I praise You,
Because of Your (SN)righteous ordinances.
165 Those who love Your law have (SO)great peace,
And [fg](SP)nothing causes them to stumble.
166 I (SQ)hope for Your salvation, O Lord,
And do Your commandments.
167 My (SR)soul keeps Your testimonies,
And I (SS)love them exceedingly.
168 I (ST)keep Your precepts and Your testimonies,
For all my (SU)ways are before You.

Tav.

169 Let my (SV)cry [fh]come before You, O Lord;
(SW)Give me understanding (SX)according to Your word.
170 Let my (SY)supplication come before You;
(SZ)Deliver me according to Your [fi]word.
171 Let my (TA)lips utter praise,
For You (TB)teach me Your statutes.
172 Let my (TC)tongue sing of Your [fj]word,
For all Your (TD)commandments are righteousness.
173 Let Your (TE)hand be [fk]ready to help me,
For I have (TF)chosen Your precepts.
174 I (TG)long for Your salvation, O Lord,
And Your law is my (TH)delight.
175 Let my (TI)soul live that it may praise You,
And let Your ordinances help me.
176 I have (TJ)gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Your servant,
For I do (TK)not forget Your commandments.

Prayer for Deliverance from the Treacherous.

A Song of [fl]Ascents.

120 (TL)In my trouble I cried to the Lord,
And He answered me.
Deliver my soul, O Lord, from (TM)lying lips,
From a (TN)deceitful tongue.
What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you,
You (TO)deceitful tongue?
(TP)Sharp arrows of the warrior,
With the burning (TQ)coals of the broom tree.

Woe is me, for I sojourn in (TR)Meshech,
For I dwell among the (TS)tents of (TT)Kedar!
Too long has my soul had its dwelling
With those who (TU)hate peace.
I (TV)am for peace, but when I speak,
They are (TW)for war.

The Lord the Keeper of Israel.

A Song of Ascents.

121 I will (TX)lift up my eyes to (TY)the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
My (TZ)help comes from the Lord,
Who (UA)made heaven and earth.
He will not (UB)allow your foot to slip;
He who (UC)keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your (UD)keeper;
The Lord is your (UE)shade on your right hand.
The (UF)sun will not smite you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will [fm](UG)protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The Lord will [fn](UH)guard your going out and your coming in
(UI)From this time forth and forever.

Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

122 I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us (UJ)go to the house of the Lord.”
Our feet are standing
Within your (UK)gates, O Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, that is (UL)built
As a city that is (UM)compact together;
To which the tribes (UN)go up, even the tribes of [fo]the Lord
[fp]An ordinance for Israel—
To give thanks to the name of the Lord.
For there (UO)thrones were set for judgment,
The thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the (UP)peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who (UQ)love you.
“May peace be within your (UR)walls,
And prosperity within your (US)palaces.”
For the sake of my (UT)brothers and my friends,
I will now say, “(UU)May peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will (UV)seek your good.

Prayer for the Lord’s Help.

A Song of Ascents.

123 To You I (UW)lift up my eyes,
O You who (UX)are enthroned in the heavens!
Behold, as the eyes of (UY)servants look to the hand of their master,
As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So our (UZ)eyes look to the Lord our God,
Until He is gracious to us.

(VA)Be gracious to us, O Lord, be gracious to us,
For we are greatly filled (VB)with contempt.
Our soul is greatly filled
With the (VC)scoffing of (VD)those who are at ease,
And with the (VE)contempt of the proud.

Praise for Rescue from Enemies.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

124 (VF)Had it not been the Lord who was on our side,”
(VG)Let Israel now say,
“Had it not been the Lord who was on our side
When men rose up against us,
Then they would have (VH)swallowed us alive,
When their (VI)anger was kindled against us;
Then the (VJ)waters would have engulfed us,
The stream would have [fq]swept over our soul;
Then the (VK)raging waters would have [fr]swept over our soul.”

Blessed be the Lord,
Who has not given us [fs]to be (VL)torn by their teeth.
Our soul has (VM)escaped (VN)as a bird out of the (VO)snare of the trapper;
The snare is broken and we have escaped.
Our (VP)help is in the name of the Lord,
Who (VQ)made heaven and earth.

The Lord Surrounds His People.

A Song of Ascents.

125 Those who trust in the Lord
Are as Mount Zion, which (VR)cannot be moved but (VS)abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So (VT)the Lord surrounds His people
(VU)From this time forth and forever.
For the (VV)scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the [ft]land of the righteous,
So that the righteous (VW)will not put forth their hands to do wrong.

(VX)Do good, O Lord, to those who are good
And to those who are (VY)upright in their hearts.
But as for those who (VZ)turn aside to their (WA)crooked ways,
The Lord will lead them away with the (WB)doers of iniquity.
(WC)Peace be upon Israel.

Thanksgiving for Return from Captivity.

A Song of Ascents.

126 When the Lord (WD)brought back [fu]the captive ones of Zion,
We were (WE)like those who dream.
Then our (WF)mouth was filled with laughter
And our (WG)tongue with joyful shouting;
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has (WH)done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
We are (WI)glad.

Restore our captivity, O Lord,
As the [fv](WJ)streams in the [fw]South.
Those who sow in (WK)tears shall reap with (WL)joyful shouting.
He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

Prosperity Comes from the Lord.

A Song of Ascents, of Solomon.

127 Unless the Lord (WM)builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord (WN)guards the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To [fx]retire late,
To (WO)eat the bread of [fy]painful labors;
For He gives to His (WP)beloved (WQ)even in his sleep.

Behold, (WR)children are a [fz]gift of the Lord,
The (WS)fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a (WT)warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
How (WU)blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
(WV)They will not be ashamed
When they (WW)speak with their enemies (WX)in the gate.

Blessedness of the Fear of the Lord.

A Song of Ascents.

128 (WY)How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
Who (WZ)walks in His ways.
When you shall (XA)eat of the [ga](XB)fruit of your hands,
You will be happy and (XC)it will be well with you.
Your wife shall be like a (XD)fruitful vine
[gb]Within your house,
Your children like (XE)olive plants
Around your table.
Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed
Who fears the Lord.

(XF)The Lord bless you (XG)from Zion,
And may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
Indeed, may you see your (XH)children’s children.
(XI)Peace be upon Israel!

Prayer for the Overthrow of Zion’s Enemies.

A Song of Ascents.

129 [gc]Many times they have [gd](XJ)persecuted me from my (XK)youth up,”
(XL)Let Israel now say,
[ge]Many times they have [gf]persecuted me from my youth up;
Yet they have (XM)not prevailed against me.
“The plowers plowed upon my back;
They lengthened their furrows.”
The Lord (XN)is righteous;
He has cut in two the (XO)cords of the wicked.

May all who (XP)hate Zion
Be (XQ)put to shame and turned backward;
Let them be like (XR)grass upon the housetops,
Which withers before it [gg]grows up;
With which the reaper does not fill his [gh]hand,
Or the binder of sheaves his (XS)bosom;
Nor do those who pass by say,
“The (XT)blessing of the Lord be upon you;
We bless you in the name of the Lord.”

Hope in the Lord’s Forgiving Love.

A Song of Ascents.

130 Out of the (XU)depths I have cried to You, O Lord.
Lord, (XV)hear my voice!
Let (XW)Your ears be attentive
To the (XX)voice of my supplications.
If You, [gi]Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could (XY)stand?
But there is (XZ)forgiveness with You,
That You may be (YA)feared.

I wait for the Lord, my (YB)soul does wait,
And [gj](YC)in His word do I hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
More than the watchmen (YD)for the morning;
Indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, (YE)hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is (YF)lovingkindness,
And with Him is (YG)abundant redemption.
And He will (YH)redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Childlike Trust in the Lord.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

131 O Lord, my heart is not (YI)proud, nor my eyes [gk](YJ)haughty;
Nor do I [gl]involve myself in (YK)great matters,
Or in things (YL)too [gm]difficult for me.
Surely I have (YM)composed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned (YN)child rests [gn]against his mother,
My soul is like a weaned child [go]within me.
O Israel, (YO)hope in the Lord
(YP)From this time forth and forever.

Prayer for the Lord’s Blessing upon the Sanctuary.

A Song of Ascents.

132 Remember, O Lord, on David’s behalf,
All (YQ)his affliction;
How he swore to the Lord
And vowed to (YR)the Mighty One of Jacob,
“Surely I will not [gp]enter (YS)my house,
Nor [gq]lie on my bed;
I will not (YT)give sleep to my eyes
Or slumber to my eyelids,
Until I find a (YU)place for the Lord,
[gr]A dwelling place for (YV)the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard of it in (YW)Ephrathah,
We found it in the (YX)field of [gs]Jaar.
Let us go into His [gt](YY)dwelling place;
Let us (YZ)worship at His (ZA)footstool.
(ZB)Arise, O Lord, to Your (ZC)resting place,
You and the ark of Your (ZD)strength.
Let Your priests be (ZE)clothed with righteousness,
And let Your (ZF)godly ones sing for joy.

10 For the sake of David Your servant,
Do not turn away the face of Your (ZG)anointed.
11 The Lord has (ZH)sworn to David
A truth from which He will not turn back:
(ZI)Of the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne.
12 “If your sons will keep My covenant
And My testimony which I will teach them,
Their sons also shall (ZJ)sit upon your throne forever.”

13 For the Lord has (ZK)chosen Zion;
He has (ZL)desired it for His habitation.
14 “This is My (ZM)resting place forever;
Here I will (ZN)dwell, for I have desired it.
15 “I will abundantly (ZO)bless her provision;
I will (ZP)satisfy her needy with bread.
16 “Her (ZQ)priests also I will clothe with salvation,
And her (ZR)godly ones will sing aloud for joy.
17 “There I will cause the (ZS)horn of David to spring forth;
I have prepared a (ZT)lamp for Mine anointed.
18 “His enemies I will (ZU)clothe with shame,
But upon himself his (ZV)crown shall shine.”

The Excellency of Brotherly Unity.

A Song of Ascents, of David.

133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For (ZW)brothers to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious (ZX)oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron’s beard,
Coming down upon the (ZY)edge of his robes.
It is like the (ZZ)dew of (AAA)Hermon
Coming down upon the (AAB)mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord (AAC)commanded the blessing—(AAD)life forever.

Greetings of Night Watchers.

A Song of Ascents.

134 Behold, (AAE)bless the Lord, all (AAF)servants of the Lord,
Who [gu](AAG)serve (AAH)by night in the house of the Lord!
(AAI)Lift up your hands to the (AAJ)sanctuary
And bless the Lord.
May the Lord (AAK)bless you from Zion,
He who (AAL)made heaven and earth.
