Psalm 74-77

Yet God Is My King

A [a]Maskil of Asaph.

74 Why, O God? Have You (A)rejected us forever?
Why does Your anger (B)smoke against the (C)sheep of Your [b]pasture?
Remember Your congregation, which You have (D)purchased of old,
Which You have (E)redeemed to be the (F)tribe of Your inheritance;
And this Mount (G)Zion, where You have dwelt.
Lift up Your steps toward the (H)perpetual ruins;
The enemy (I)has damaged everything within the sanctuary.
Your adversaries have (J)roared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their (K)own signs (L)for signs.
Each seems like one who lifts up
[c]An (M)axe against the undergrowth of trees.
And now its (N)carved work altogether
They smash with hatchet and [d]hammers.
They have (O)set Your sanctuary on fire;
By bringing it to the ground, they have (P)defiled the dwelling place of Your name.
They (Q)said in their heart, “Let us [e]completely [f]subdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
We do not see our (R)signs;
There is (S)no longer any prophet,
Nor is there any among us who knows (T)how long.
10 How long, O God, will the adversary (U)reproach?
Will the enemy (V)spurn Your name forever?
11 Why (W)do You turn back Your hand, even Your right hand?
From within Your bosom, (X)destroy them!

12 Yet God is (Y)my King from of old,
Who works deeds of [g]salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 You (Z)divided the sea by Your strength;
You (AA)broke the heads of the (AB)sea monsters [h]in the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of [i](AC)Leviathan;
You gave him as food for the [j]creatures (AD)of the desert.
15 [k]You (AE)split open spring and river;
[l]You (AF)dried up ever-flowing rivers.
16 Yours is the day, Yours also is the night;
[m]You have (AG)established the [n]light and the sun.
17 [o]You have (AH)caused all the boundaries of the earth to stand firm;
[p]You have formed (AI)summer and winter.

18 Remember this, O Yahweh, that the enemy has (AJ)reproached,
And a (AK)wickedly foolish people has spurned Your name.
19 Do not deliver the soul of Your (AL)turtledove to the wild beast;
(AM)Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever.
20 Look to the (AN)covenant;
For the (AO)dark places of the land are full of the haunts of violence.
21 Let not the (AP)oppressed return dishonored;
Let the (AQ)afflicted and needy praise Your name.

22 Arise, O God, and (AR)plead Your own cause;
Remember [q]how the (AS)wicked fool reproaches You all day long.
23 Do not forget the voice of Your (AT)adversaries,
The (AU)rumbling of those who rise against You which ascends continually.

God Judges with Equity

For the choir director. [r]Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph. [s]A Song.

75 We (AV)give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks,
For Your name is (AW)near;
Men recount (AX)Your wondrous deeds.
“For I select an (AY)appointed time,
It is I who (AZ)judge with equity.
The (BA)earth and all who dwell in it [t]melt;
It is I who have firmly set its (BB)pillars. [u]Selah.
I said to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
And to the wicked, ‘(BC)Do not raise up the horn;
Do not raise up your horn on high,
(BD)Nor speak with insolent [v]pride.’”

For one’s rising up does not come from the east, nor from the west,
And not from the [w](BE)desert;
But (BF)God is the Judge;
He (BG)puts down one and raises up another.
For a (BH)cup is in the hand of Yahweh, and the wine foams;
It is (BI)full of His mixture, and He pours from this;
Surely all the wicked of the earth must drain and (BJ)drink down its dregs.

But as for me, I will (BK)declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 And all the (BL)horns of the wicked I will cut off,
But (BM)the horns of the righteous will be raised up.

God’s Name Is Great in Israel

For the choir director. With stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.

76 God is (BN)known in Judah;
His name is (BO)great in Israel.
So His [x](BP)tabernacle is in (BQ)Salem;
His (BR)dwelling place is in Zion.
There He (BS)broke the [y]flaming arrows,
The shield and the sword and the battle. [z]Selah.

You are shining,
Majestic from the mountains of prey.
The (BT)stouthearted were plundered,
[aa]They sank into sleep;
And none of the [ab]warriors could use his hands.
At Your (BU)rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both (BV)chariot rider and horse slumbered into a deep sleep.
But You, You are [ac](BW)fearsome;
And (BX)who can stand in Your presence when once [ad]You are angry?

You made Your cause to be heard from heaven;
The earth (BY)feared and was quiet
When God (BZ)arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah.
10 For the [ae](CA)wrath of man shall praise You;
With a remnant of wrath You will gird Yourself.

11 (CB)Make vows to Yahweh your God and (CC)pay them;
Let all who are around Him (CD)bring gifts to the Fearsome One.
12 He will cut off the spirit of princes;
He is [af](CE)feared by the kings of the earth.

In My Distress I Sought the Lord

For the choir director. According to [ag]Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A Psalm.

77 My voice rises to God, and I must (CF)cry aloud;
My voice rises to God, and He will hear me.
In the (CG)day of my distress I sought the Lord;
(CH)In the night my (CI)hand was stretched out [ah]without weariness;
My soul (CJ)refused to be comforted.
I remember God and I am (CK)disturbed;
I (CL)muse and (CM)my spirit faints. [ai]Selah.
You have held my eyelids open;
I am so troubled that I (CN)cannot speak.
I give thought to the (CO)days of old,
The years of long ago.
I remember my (CP)music in the night;
I (CQ)am musing with my heart,
And my spirit is searching:

Will the Lord (CR)reject evermore?
And will He (CS)not be favorable again?
Has His (CT)lovingkindness ceased forever?
Has His [aj](CU)word ended [ak]from generation to generation?
Has God (CV)forgotten to be gracious,
Or has He in anger shut up His (CW)compassion? Selah.
10 Then I said, “(CX)It is my [al]grief,
That the (CY)right hand of the Most High has changed.”

11 I shall remember the (CZ)deeds of Yah;
Surely I will (DA)remember Your wonders of old.
12 I will (DB)meditate on all Your work
And muse on Your deeds.
13 O God, Your way is (DC)holy;
(DD)What god is great like God?
14 You are the (DE)God who works wonders;
You have (DF)made known Your strength among the peoples.
15 You have by Your arm (DG)redeemed Your people,
The sons of Jacob and (DH)Joseph. Selah.

16 The (DI)waters saw You, O God;
The waters saw You, they were in anguish;
The deeps also trembled.
17 The (DJ)clouds poured out water;
The skies (DK)gave forth a sound;
Your (DL)arrows went here and there.
18 The (DM)sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The (DN)lightnings lit up the world;
The (DO)earth trembled and shook.
19 Your (DP)way was in the sea
And Your paths in the mighty waters,
But Your footprints were not known.
20 You (DQ)led Your people like a flock
By the hand of (DR)Moses and Aaron.
