Psalm 40-45

40 I waited patiently for the LORD, and He inclined to me and heard my cry.

Also, He brought me out of the horrible pit—out of the miry clay—and set my feet upon the rock and ordered my goings.

And He has put in my mouth a new song of praise to our God. Many shall see it and fear and shall trust in the LORD.

Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust and does not regard the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

You have made many, O LORD my God, Your wonderful works; so that no one can count to You, in order, Your thoughts toward us. I would declare and speak of them, but they are more than I am able to express.

Sacrifice and offering You did not desire (my ears You have prepared). Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.

Then I said, “Lo, I come. In the roll of the Book it is written of me.

“I desired to do Your good will, O my God. Indeed, Your Law is within my heart.”

I have declared righteousness in the great congregation. Lo, I will not refrain my lips. O LORD, You know.

10 I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart. I have declared Your truth and Your salvation. I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great Congregation.

11 Do not withdraw Your tender mercy from me, O LORD. Let Your mercy and Your truth always preserve me.

12 For innumerable troubles have surrounded me. My sins have taken such hold upon me that I am not able to look up. They are more in number than the hairs of my head. Therefore, my heart has failed me.

13 Let it please You, O LORD, to deliver me. Hurry, O LORD, to help me.

14 Let those who seek my soul to destroy it be confounded and put to shame together. Let those who desire my hurt be driven backward and put to rebuke.

15 Let those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!” be destroyed as a reward for their shame,

16 Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You, and let those who love Your salvation, say always, “The LORD be praised!”

17 Though I be poor and needy, the LORD thinks on me. You are my Helper and my Deliverer. My God, do not delay. To him who excels: A Psalm of David.

41 Blessed is he who judges wisely of the poor. The LORD shall deliver him in the time of trouble.

The LORD will keep him and preserve him alive. He shall be blessed upon the Earth; and You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.

The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of sorrow. You have turned all his bed in his sickness.

I said, “LORD have mercy upon me. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”

My enemies speak evil of me, saying, “When shall he die, and his name perish?”

And if he come to see me, he speaks lies; his heart heaps iniquity within him. When he comes forth, he tells it.

All those who hate me whisper together against me. They imagine my hurt against me, saying,

“A mischief lies upon him,” and, “He who lies shall rise no more.”

Indeed, my familiar friend whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted up the heel against me.

10 Therefore, O LORD, have mercy upon me and raise me up. So shall I reward them.

11 By this I know that You favor me: because my enemy does not triumph against me.

12 And as for me, You uphold me in my integrity, and set me before Your face forever.

13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, world without end! So be it. Even so be it! To him who excels: A Psalm to give instruction, committed to the sons of Korah.

42 As the deer brays for the rivers of water, so panted my soul after You, O God.

My soul thirsts for God, even for the living God. When shall I come and appear before the presence of God?

My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me daily, “Where is your God?”

When I remembered these things, I poured out my very heart; because I had gone with the multitude and led them into the House of God with the voice of singing and praise, as a multitude that keeps a feast.

Why are you cast down, my soul, and unquiet within me? Wait on God; for I will still give Him thanks for the help of His presence.

My God, my soul is cast down within me because I remembered You from the land of Jordan, and Hermon, and from the Mount Mizar.

One deep calls another deep by the noise of Your waterspouts. All Your waves and Your floods have gone over me.

The LORD will grant His lovingkindness in the day; and in the night shall I sing of Him a prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God, my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning when the enemy oppresses?”

10 As a sword shattering my bones, my enemies reproach me, saying daily to me, “Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Wait on God. For I will yet give thanks to Him, to the Face of my Deliverer and my God.

43 Judge me, O God, and defend my cause against the unmerciful people. Deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.

For You are the God of my strength. Why have You put me away? Why do I go so mourning when the enemy oppressed me?

Send Your light and Your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your Holy Mountain, and to Your Tabernacles.

Then I will go to the altar of God, even to the God of my joy and gladness. And upon the harp will I give thanks to You, O God, my God.

Why are You cast down, my soul? And why are You disquieted within me? Wait on God; for I will still give Him thanks, my present help and my God. To him who excels: A Psalm to give instruction, committed to the sons of Korah.

44 We have heard with our ears, O God. Our fathers have told us the works that You have done in their days, in the old time.

You have driven out the heathen with Your hand and planted them. You have destroyed the people and caused them to go.

For they did not inherit the land by their own sword (nor did their own arm save them) but by Your right hand, and Your arm, and the light of Your countenance; because You favored them.

You are my King, O God! Send help to Jacob!

Through You we have thrust back our adversaries. By Your Name we have trodden down those who rose up against us.

For I do not trust in my bow; nor can my sword save me.

But You have saved us from our adversaries and have put those who hate us to confusion.

We will praise God continually and will confess Your Name forever. Selah.

But now, You are far off and put us to confusion, and do not go forth with our armies.

10 You make us turn back from the adversary, and those who hate us get plunder for themselves.

11 You give us as sheep to be eaten and scatter us among the nations.

12 You sell Your people without gain, and do not increase their price.

13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a jest and laughing stock to those who surround us.

14 You make us a proverb among the nations, and a nodding of the head among the people.

15 My confusion is daily before me and the shame of my face has covered me,

16 because of the voice of the slanderer and rebuker, because of the enemy and avenger.

17 All this has come upon us. Still, we do not forget You. Nor do we deal falsely concerning Your Covenant.

18 Our heart is not turned back, nor have our steps gone out of Your paths;

19 even though You have struck us down into the place of dragons and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the Name of our God, and held up our hands to a strange god,

21 shall not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

22 Surely, for Your sake we are killed continually and are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Up! Why do You sleep, O LORD? Awake! Be not far off forever.

24 Why do you hide Your face and forget our misery and our affliction?

25 For our soul is beaten down to the dust. Our belly clings to the ground.

26 Rise up for our succor; and redeem us for Your mercy’s sake. To him who excels on Shoshannim: a song of love to give instruction, committed to the sons of Korah.

45 My heart stirs with good words. I will speak of my works concerning the King. My tongue is as the pen of a swift writer.

You are more beautiful than the children of men. Grace is poured in Your lips because God has blessed You forever.

Gird Your sword upon Your Thigh, O Most Mighty, Your worship and Your Glory!

And prosper with Your Glory! Ride upon the Word of Truth and of humility and of righteousness. So, Your right Hand shall teach You terrible things.

Your arrows are sharp to pierce the heart of the king’s enemies. The people shall fall under You.

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of Your Kingdom is a scepter of righteousness.

You love righteousness and hate wickedness, because God, even Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows.

All Your garments smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia, of the ivory palaces where they have made You glad.

King’s daughters were among Your honorable women. Upon Your right hand stood the queen in a vesture of gold of Ophir.

10 Hear, O daughter, and consider and incline your ear. Also, forget your own people and your father’s house.

11 So shall the King have pleasure in your beauty; for He is your LORD. And reverence Him.

12 And the daughter of Tyre, with the rich of the people, shall do homage before your face with presents.

13 The King’s daughter is all glorious within. Her clothing is of embroidered gold.

14 She shall be brought to the King in clothing of needlework. The virgins who follow after her (her companions) shall be brought to You.

15 With joy and gladness they shall be brought and shall enter into the King’s palace.

16 Your children shall be in place of your fathers. You shall make them princes through all the Earth.

17 I will make Your Name remembered through all generations. Therefore, the people shall give thanks to You. World without end. To him who excels upon Alamoth: a song committed to the sons of Korah.
