Psalm 58-65

There Is a God Who Judges on Earth

For the choir director. [a]Al-tashheth. Of David. A [b]Mikhtam.

58 Do you indeed [c]speak righteousness, O [d]gods?
Do you (A)judge [e]with equity, O sons of men?
No, in heart you (B)work unrighteousness;
On earth you [f](C)prepare a path for the violence of your hands.
The wicked are estranged (D)from the womb;
These who speak falsehood (E)wander in error from [g]birth.
They have venom like the (F)venom of a serpent;
Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
So that it (G)does not hear the voice of [h](H)charmers,
Or a skillful caster of spells.

O God, (I)shatter their teeth in their mouth;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Yahweh.
Let them (J)flow away like water that runs off;
When he [i](K)aims his arrows, let them be as [j]headless shafts.
Let them be as a snail which [k]melts away as it goes along,
Like the (L)miscarriages of a woman which never behold the sun.
Before your (M)pots can feel the fire of thorns
He will (N)sweep them away with a whirlwind, the living and the burning alike.

10 The (O)righteous will be glad when he (P)beholds the vengeance;
He will (Q)wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 And men will say, “Surely there is a [l](R)reward for the righteous;
Surely there is a God who (S)judges [m]on earth!”

Deliver Me from My Enemies

For the choir director. [n]Al-tashheth. Of David. A [o]Mikhtam. [p]When Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to put him to death.

59 (T)Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
[q](U)Set me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.
Deliver me from (V)workers of iniquity
And save me from (W)men of bloodshed.
For behold, they (X)have lain in wait for my soul;
[r]Fierce men [s](Y)launch an attack against me,
(Z)Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Yahweh,
[t](AA)For no guilt of mine, they run and set themselves against me.
(AB)Arouse Yourself to meet me, and see!
You, (AC)O Yahweh God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Awake to [u](AD)punish all the nations;
(AE)Do not be gracious to any who are treacherous in [v]iniquity. [w]Selah.
They (AF)return at evening, they howl like a (AG)dog,
And go around the city.
Behold, they (AH)pour forth speech with their mouth;
(AI)Swords are in their lips,
For, they say, “(AJ)Who hears?”
But You, O Yahweh, (AK)laugh at them;
You (AL)mock all the nations.

Because of [x]his (AM)strength I will watch for You,
For God is my (AN)stronghold.
10 [y]My God (AO)in His lovingkindness will approach me;
God will let me (AP)look triumphantly upon [z]my foes.
11 Do not slay them, (AQ)or my people will forget;
(AR)Make them wander about by Your power, and bring them down,
O Lord, (AS)our shield.
12 [aa]On account of the (AT)sin of their mouth and the word of their lips,
Let them even be (AU)caught in their pride,
And on account of (AV)curses and [ab]lies which they utter.
13 [ac](AW)Destroy them in wrath, [ad]destroy them that they may be no more;
That men may (AX)know that God [ae]rules in Jacob
To the ends of the earth. Selah.
14 They (AY)return at evening, they howl like a dog,
And go around the city.
15 They (AZ)wander about [af]for food
And [ag]growl if they are not satisfied.

16 But as for me, I shall (BA)sing of Your strength;
And I shall (BB)joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the (BC)morning,
For You have been my (BD)stronghold
And a (BE)refuge in the day of my distress.
17 (BF)O my strength, I will sing praises to You;
For God is my (BG)stronghold, the [ah]God who shows me lovingkindness.

Through God We Shall Do Valiantly

For the choir director. According to [ai]Shushan Eduth. A [aj]Mikhtam of David. For teaching. [ak]When he struggled with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60 O God, (BH)You have rejected us. You have [al](BI)broken us;
You have been (BJ)angry; Oh, (BK)restore us.
You have made the [am](BL)land quake, You have split it open;
(BM)Heal its breaches, for it shakes.
You have (BN)caused Your people to see hardship;
You have given us [an]wine to (BO)drink that causes reeling.
You have given a (BP)banner to those who fear You,
[ao]In order to flee to it from the bow. [ap]Selah.
(BQ)That Your (BR)beloved may be rescued,
(BS)Save with Your right hand, and answer [aq]us!

God has spoken in His [ar](BT)holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out (BU)Shechem and measure out the valley of (BV)Succoth.
(BW)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(BX)Ephraim also is the [as]helmet of My head;
Judah is My [at](BY)scepter.
(BZ)Moab is My washbowl;
Over (CA)Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Make a loud shout, O (CB)Philistia, because of Me!”

Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who [au]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have You Yourself, O God, not (CC)rejected us?
And (CD)will You, O God, not go forth with our armies?
11 Oh give us help against the adversary,
For (CE)salvation [av]by man is worthless.
12 [aw]Through God we shall (CF)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (CG)tread down our adversaries.

Lead Me to the Rock

For the choir director. On a stringed instrument. Of David.

61 (CH)Hear my cry of lamentation, O God;
(CI)Give heed to my prayer.
From the (CJ)end of the earth I call to You when my heart is (CK)faint;
Lead me to (CL)the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a (CM)refuge for me,
A (CN)tower of strength before the enemy.
Let me (CO)sojourn in Your tent forever;
Let me (CP)take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. [ax]Selah.

For You, O God, have heard my (CQ)vows;
You have given me the inheritance of those who (CR)fear Your name.
You will (CS)add days to the king’s [ay]life;
His years will be from generation to generation.
He will sit enthroned (CT)before God forever;
Appoint (CU)lovingkindness and truth that they may guard him.
So I will (CV)sing praise to Your name forever,
As I (CW)pay my vows day by day.

God Is a Refuge for Us

For the choir director. According to [az]Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

62 (CX)Surely my soul waits in silence for God;
From Him (CY)is my salvation.
Surely He is my (CZ)rock and my salvation,
My (DA)stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.

How long will you assail a man,
That you may murder him, all of you,
Like a (DB)leaning wall, like a fence thrust down?
Surely they have counseled to thrust him down from his high position;
They (DC)find pleasure in falsehood;
They (DD)bless with [ba]their mouth,
But inwardly they curse. [bb]Selah.

Surely (DE)wait in silence for God, O my soul,
For my hope is from Him.
Surely He is (DF)my rock and my salvation,
My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
On God my (DG)salvation and my glory rest;
The rock of my strength, my (DH)refuge is in God.
(DI)Trust in Him at all times, O people;
(DJ)Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah.

Surely [bc]men of (DK)low degree are merely (DL)vanity and [bd]men of rank are a (DM)lie;
In the (DN)balances they go up;
They are together lighter than a breath of vanity.
10 (DO)Do not trust in oppression
And do not put vain hope in (DP)robbery;
If riches increase, (DQ)do not set your heart upon them.

11 [be]Once God has (DR)spoken;
[bf]Twice I have heard this:
That (DS)strength belongs to God;
12 And that (DT)to You, O Lord, belongs lovingkindness,
For You (DU)repay a man according to his work.

My Soul Thirsts for You

A Psalm of David. [bg]When he was in the wilderness of Judah.

63 O God, (DV)You are my God; I shall seek You [bh]earnestly;
My soul (DW)thirsts for You, my flesh [bi]yearns for You,
In a (DX)dry and weary land without water.
Thus I have (DY)beheld You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your (DZ)lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips will laud You.
Thus I will bless You (EA)as long as I live;
I will (EB)lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul is (EC)satisfied as with fatness and richness,
And my mouth offers (ED)praises with lips of joyful songs.

When I remember You (EE)on my bed,
I meditate on You in the (EF)night watches,
For (EG)You have been my help,
And in the (EH)shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
My soul (EI)clings [bj]to You;
Your (EJ)right hand upholds me.

But those who (EK)seek my [bk]life to destroy it,
Will go into the [bl](EL)depths of the earth.
10 [bm]They will be (EM)delivered over to the power of the sword;
They will be a (EN)portion for foxes.
11 But the (EO)king will be glad in God;
Everyone who (EP)swears by Him will boast,
For the (EQ)mouths of those who speak lies will be closed.

The Righteous Will Be Glad in Yahweh

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

64 Hear my voice, O God, in (ER)my [bn]complaint;
(ES)Guard my life from dread of the enemy.
Hide me from the (ET)secret counsel of evildoers,
From the tumult of the (EU)workers of iniquity,
Who (EV)have sharpened their tongue like a sword.
They (EW)aimed bitter speech as their arrow,
To (EX)shoot [bo]from places of hiding at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him, and (EY)do not fear.
They [bp]hold fast to themselves an evil purpose;
They [bq]talk of (EZ)laying snares secretly;
They say, “(FA)Who can see them?”
They searched out unrighteousness, saying,
“We have completed a diligent search”;
For the [br](FB)inward thought of a man and his heart are [bs]deep.

But (FC)God [bt]will shoot them with an arrow;
Suddenly they will be wounded.
So [bu]they will (FD)cause their own tongue (FE)to turn against them;
All who see them will (FF)shake their head.
Then all men [bv]will (FG)fear,
And they [bw]will (FH)declare the work of God,
And [bx]will consider [by]what He has done.
10 The righteous man will be (FI)glad in Yahweh and will (FJ)take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will boast.

Blessed Is the One Whom You Choose

For the choir director. A Psalm of David. A Song.

65 To You, there will be silence and praise in Zion, O God,
And to You the (FK)vow will be paid.
O You who hear prayer,
To You (FL)all flesh comes.
(FM)Words of iniquity prevail against me;
As for our transgressions, You (FN)atone for them.
How (FO)blessed is the one whom You (FP)choose and bring near to You
That he would dwell in Your courts.
We will be (FQ)satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.

By [bz](FR)fearsome deeds You answer us in righteousness, O (FS)God of our salvation,
You who are the trust of all the (FT)ends of the earth and of the farthest [ca](FU)sea;
Who (FV)establishes the mountains by His strength,
Being (FW)girded with might;
Who (FX)stills the rumbling of the seas,
The rumbling of their waves,
And the (FY)tumult of the peoples.
They who inhabit the (FZ)ends of the earth are in fear on account of Your signs;
You make [cb]the dawn and the sunset shout for joy.

You visit the earth and (GA)cause it to overflow;
You greatly (GB)enrich it;
The [cc](GC)stream of God is full of water;
You establish their (GD)grain, for thus You establish [cd]the earth.
10 You water its furrows abundantly,
You smooth its ridges,
You soften it (GE)with showers,
You bless its growth.
11 You crown the year [ce]with Your (GF)goodness,
And Your [cf]paths (GG)drip with richness.
12 (GH)The pastures of the wilderness drip,
And the (GI)hills gird themselves with rejoicing.
13 The meadows are (GJ)clothed with flocks
And the valleys are (GK)covered with grain;
They (GL)make a loud shout, indeed, they sing.
