Chapter 4

God’s Free Children in Christ.[a] I mean that as long as the heir is not of age,[b] he is no different from a slave, although he is the owner of everything, but he is under the supervision of guardians and administrators until the date set by his father. (A)In the same way we also, when we were not of age, were enslaved to the elemental powers of the world.[c] But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,(B) to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption.(C) As proof that you are children,[d] God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”(D) So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.(E)

Do Not Throw This Freedom Away.[e] (F)At a time when you did not know God, you became slaves to things that by nature are not gods;[f] but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and destitute elemental powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?(G) 10 You are observing days,(H) months, seasons, and years.[g] 11 I am afraid on your account that perhaps I have labored for you in vain.[h]

Appeal to Former Loyalty.[i] 12 I implore you, brothers, be as I am, because I have also become as you are.[j] You did me no wrong;(I) 13 you know that it was because of a physical illness[k] that I originally preached the gospel to you, 14 and you did not show disdain or contempt because of the trial caused you by my physical condition, but rather you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 Where now is that blessedness of yours?[l] Indeed, I can testify to you that, if it had been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. 16 So now have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They show interest in you, but not in a good way; they want to isolate you,[m] so that you may show interest in them.(J) 18 Now it is good to be shown interest for good reason at all times, and not only when I am with you. 19 My children, for whom I am again in labor until Christ be formed in you!(K) 20 I would like to be with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed because of you.

An Allegory on Christian Freedom.[n] 21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the freeborn woman.(L) 23 The son of the slave woman was born naturally, the son of the freeborn through a promise.(M) 24 Now this is an allegory. These women represent two covenants. One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar.(N) 25 Hagar represents Sinai,[o] a mountain in Arabia; it corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery along with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother.(O) 27 For it is written:

“Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children;(P)
    break forth and shout, you who were not in labor;
for more numerous are the children of the deserted one
than of her who has a husband.”[p]

28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of the promise.(Q) 29 But just as then the child of the flesh persecuted the child of the spirit, it is the same now. 30 But what does the scripture say?

“Drive out the slave woman and her son!
For the son of the slave woman shall not share the inheritance with the son”(R)

of the freeborn. 31 Therefore, brothers, we are children not of the slave woman but of the freeborn woman.(S)

V. Exhortation to Christian Living

Chapter 5

The Importance of Faith.[q] For freedom[r] Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.(T)

It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you.(U) Once again I declare to every man who has himself circumcised(V) that he is bound to observe the entire law.[s] You are separated from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. (W)For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness. (X)For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.[t]

Be Not Misled.[u] You were running well;[v] who hindered you from following [the] truth? (Y)That enticement does not come from the one who called you.[w] A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough.(Z) 10 I am confident of you in the Lord that you will not take a different view, and that the one who is troubling you will bear the condemnation, whoever he may be.(AA) 11 As for me, brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision,[x] why am I still being persecuted? In that case, the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished.(AB) 12 Would that those who are upsetting you might also castrate themselves![y]

Freedom for Service.[z] 13 For you were called for freedom, brothers.(AC) But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve[aa] one another through love. 14 For the whole law(AD) is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”[ab] 15 But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.

16 (AE)I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.[ac] 17 For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.(AF) 18 But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.(AG) 19 [ad]Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness,(AH) 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions,(AI) 21 occasions of envy,[ae] drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,(AJ) 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.(AK) 24 Now those who belong to Christ [Jesus] have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.(AL) 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.(AM) 26 Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.(AN)

Chapter 6

Life in the Community of Christ.[af] Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted.(AO) Bear one another’s burdens,(AP) and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.[ag] (AQ)For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself. [ah]Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else; for each will bear his own load.(AR)

(AS)One who is being instructed in the word should share all good things with his instructor.[ai] Make no mistake: God is not mocked, for a person will reap only what he sows, because the one who sows for his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit.(AT) Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up.(AU) 10 So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all,(AV) but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.[aj]

VI. Conclusion

Final Appeal.[ak] 11 See with what large letters[al] I am writing to you in my own hand!(AW) 12 [am]It is those who want to make a good appearance in the flesh who are trying to compel you to have yourselves circumcised, only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.(AX) 13 Not even those having themselves circumcised[an] observe the law themselves; they only want you to be circumcised so that they may boast of your flesh. 14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which[ao] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.(AY) 15 For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision,(AZ) but only a new creation.[ap] 16 Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule[aq] and to the Israel of God.(BA)

17 From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus[ar] on my body.(BB)

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.(BC)
