Psalm 140-145

Psalm 140

Prayer for Rescue

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Rescue me, Lord, from evil men.
Keep me safe from violent men(A)
who plan evil in their hearts.
They stir up wars all day long.(B)
They make their tongues
as sharp as a snake’s bite;
viper’s venom is under their lips.(C)Selah

Protect me, Lord,
from the power of the wicked.(D)
Keep me safe from violent men
who plan to make me stumble.[a](E)
The proud hide a trap with ropes for me;
they spread a net along the path
and set snares for me.(F)Selah

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”
Listen, Lord, to my cry for help.(G)
Lord, my Lord, my strong Savior,
you shield my head on the day of battle.(H)
Lord, do not grant the desires of the wicked;
do not let them achieve their goals.
Otherwise, they will become proud.(I)Selah

When those who surround me rise up,[b]
may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them.(J)
10 Let hot coals fall on them.
Let them be thrown into the fire,
into the abyss, never again to rise.(K)
11 Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.
Let evil relentlessly[c] hunt down a violent man.(L)

12 I[d] know that the Lord upholds
the just cause of the poor,
justice for the needy.(M)
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name;
the upright will live in your presence.(N)

Psalm 141

Protection from Sin and Sinners

A psalm of David.

Lord, I call on you; hurry to help me.
Listen to my voice when I call on you.(O)
May my prayer be set before you as incense,(P)
the raising of my hands as the evening offering.(Q)

Lord, set up a guard for my mouth;
keep watch at the door of my lips.(R)
Do not let my heart turn to any evil thing
or perform wicked acts with evildoers.
Do not let me feast on their delicacies.(S)
Let the righteous one strike me—
it is an act of faithful love;
let him rebuke me—
it is oil for my head;
let me[e] not refuse it.(T)
Even now my prayer is against
the evil acts of the wicked.[f](U)
When their rulers[g] will be thrown off
the sides of a cliff,
the people[h] will listen to my words,
for they are pleasing.(V)

As when one plows and breaks up the soil,
turning up rocks,
so our[i] bones have been scattered
at the mouth of Sheol.(W)

But my eyes look to you, Lord, my Lord.
I seek refuge in you; do not let me die.[j](X)
Protect me from the trap they have set for me,
and from the snares of evildoers.(Y)
10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
while I pass by safely.(Z)

Psalm 142

A Cry of Distress

A Maskil of David. When he was in the cave.(AA) A prayer.

I cry aloud to the Lord;(AB)
I plead aloud to the Lord for mercy.(AC)
I pour out my complaint before him;
I reveal my trouble to him.(AD)
Although my spirit is weak within me,
you know my way.(AE)
Along this path I travel
they have hidden a trap for me.(AF)
Look to the right and see:[k]
no one stands up for me;
there is no refuge for me;
no one cares about me.(AG)

I cry to you, Lord;
I say, “You are my shelter,
my portion in the land of the living.”(AH)
Listen to my cry,
for I am very weak.(AI)
Rescue me from those who pursue me,
for they are too strong for me.(AJ)
Free me from prison
so that I can praise your name.
The righteous will gather around me
because you deal generously with me.(AK)

Psalm 143

A Cry for Help

A psalm of David.

Lord, hear my prayer.
In your faithfulness listen to my plea,
and in your righteousness answer me.(AL)
Do not bring your servant into judgment,(AM)
for no one alive is righteous in your sight.(AN)

For the enemy has pursued me,
crushing me to the ground,
making me live in darkness
like those long dead.(AO)
My spirit is weak within me;
my heart is overcome with dismay.(AP)

I remember the days of old;
I meditate on all you have done;
I reflect on the work of your hands.(AQ)
I spread out my hands to you;
I am like parched land before you.(AR)Selah

Answer me quickly, Lord;
my spirit fails.(AS)
Don’t hide your face from me,
or I will be like those
going down to the Pit.(AT)
Let me experience
your faithful love in the morning,
for I trust in you.(AU)
Reveal to me the way I should go
because I appeal to you.(AV)
Rescue me from my enemies, Lord;
I come to you for protection.[l](AW)
10 Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.(AX)
May your gracious Spirit
lead me on level ground.(AY)

11 For your name’s sake, Lord,
let me live.
In your righteousness deliver me from trouble,(AZ)
12 and in your faithful love destroy my enemies.
Wipe out all those who attack me,
for I am your servant.(BA)

Psalm 144

A King’s Prayer

Of David.

Blessed be the Lord, my rock(BB)
who trains my hands for battle
and my fingers for warfare.(BC)
He is my faithful love and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer.
He is my shield,(BD) and I take refuge in him;(BE)
he subdues my people[m] under me.(BF)

Lord, what is a human that you care for him,
a son of man[n] that you think of him?(BG)
A human is like a breath;
his days are like a passing shadow.(BH)

Lord, part your heavens and come down.(BI)
Touch the mountains, and they will smoke.(BJ)
Flash your lightning and scatter the foe;[o]
shoot your arrows and rout them.(BK)
Reach down[p] from on high;(BL)
rescue me from deep water, and set me free
from the grasp of foreigners(BM)
whose mouths speak lies,
whose right hands are deceptive.(BN)

God, I will sing a new song to you;
I will play on a ten-stringed harp for you(BO)
10 the one who gives victory to kings,
who frees his servant David
from the deadly sword.(BP)
11 Set me free and rescue me
from foreigners(BQ)
whose mouths speak lies,
whose right hands are deceptive.(BR)

12 Then our sons will be like plants
nurtured in their youth,
our daughters, like corner pillars
that are carved in the palace style.(BS)
13 Our storehouses will be full,
supplying all kinds of produce;(BT)
our flocks will increase by thousands
and tens of thousands in our open fields.(BU)
14 Our cattle will be well fed.[q]
There will be no breach in the walls,
no going into captivity,[r]
and no cry of lament in our public squares.(BV)
15 Happy are the people with such blessings.
Happy are the people whose God is the Lord.(BW)
