Romans 8-10

1 He concludeth that there is no condemnation to them, who are grafted in Christ through his Spirit, 3 howsoever they be as yet burdened with sins: 9 For they live through that Spirit, 14 Whose testimony, 15 driveth away all fear, 28 and relieveth our present miseries.

Now [a]then there is no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus, which [b]walk not after the [c]flesh, but after the Spirit.

[d]For the [e]Law of the Spirit of [f]life which is in [g]Christ Jesus, hath [h]freed me from the Law of sin and of death.

[i]For (that that was [j]impossible to the Law, inasmuch as it was weak, because of the [k]flesh) God sending his own Son, in the similitude of [l]sinful flesh, and for [m]sin, [n]condemned sin in the flesh,

That that [o]righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled [p]in us, which walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

[q]For they that are after the [r]flesh, savor the things of the flesh: but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

[s]For the wisdom of the flesh is death: but the wisdom of the Spirit is life and peace,

[t]Because the wisdom of the flesh is enmity against God: [u]for it is not subject to the Law of God, neither indeed can be.

[v]So then they that are in the flesh, cannot please God.

[w]Now ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, because the spirit of God dwelleth in you: but if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, the same is not his.

10 [x]And if Christ be in you, the [y]body is dead, because of sin: but the Spirit is life for righteousness sake.

11 [z]But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead, dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead, shall also quicken your mortal bodies, by his Spirit that [aa]dwelleth in you.

12 [ab]Therefore brethren, we are debtors not to the flesh, to live after the flesh:

13 [ac]For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye mortify the deeds of the body by the Spirit, ye shall live.

14 [ad]For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

15 [ae]For ye have not received the [af]Spirit of bondage, to [ag]fear again: but ye have received the Spirit of [ah]adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

16 The same Spirit beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

17 [ai]If we be children, we are also [aj]heirs, even the heirs of God, and heirs annexed with Christ: [ak]if so be that we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

18 [al]For I [am]count that the afflictions of this present time are not worthy of the glory, which shall be showed unto us.

19 [an]For the fervent desire of the [ao]creature waiteth when the sons of God shall be revealed,

20 Because the creature is subject to [ap]vanity, not of its [aq]own will, but by reason [ar]of him, which hath subdued it under [as]hope,

21 Because the creature also shall be delivered from the [at]bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the sons of God.

22 For we know that every creature groaneth with us also, and [au]travaileth in pain together unto this present.

23 [av]And not only the creature, but we also which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we do sigh in [aw]ourselves, waiting for the adoption, even [ax](A)the redemption of our body.

24 [ay]For we are saved by hope: but [az]hope that is seen, is not hope: for how can a man hope for that which he seeth?

25 But if we hope for that we see not, we do with patience abide for it.

26 [ba]Likewise the Spirit also [bb]helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what to pray as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh [bc]request for us with sighs, which cannot be expressed.

27 But he that searcheth the hearts, knoweth what is the [bd]meaning of the Spirit: for he maketh request for the Saints, [be]according to the will of God.

28 [bf]Also we know that [bg]all things work together for the best unto them that love God, even to them that are called of his [bh]purpose.

29 For those which he knew before, he also predestinated to be made like to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30 Moreover, whom he [bi]predestinated, them also he called, and whom he called, them also he justified, and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

31 [bj]What shall we then say to these things? If God be on our side, who can be against us?

32 Who spared not his own Son, but gave him for us all to death, how shall he not with him [bk]give us all things also?

33 [bl]Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s chosen? it is [bm]God that justifieth.

34 Who shall condemn? it is Christ which is dead: yea, or rather, which is risen again, who is also at the right hand of God, and maketh request also for us.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of [bn]Christ? shall tribulation or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, (B)For thy sake are we killed all day long: we are counted as sheep for the slaughter:

37 [bo]Nevertheless, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor Angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 He answereth an objection, that might be brought on the Jews’ behalf, 7 and telleth of two sorts of Abraham’s children,  15 and that God worketh all things in this matter according to his will, 20 even as the potter doth. 24, 30 He proveth as well the calling of the Gentiles, 31 as also the rejecting of the Jews, 25, 27 by the testimony of the Prophets.

I say [bp]the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing me witness in the holy Ghost,

That I have great heaviness, and continual sorrow in mine heart.

For I would wish myself to be [bq]separate from Christ, for my brethren that are my kinsmen according to the [br]flesh,

Which are the Israelites, to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the [bs]glory, and the (C)[bt]Covenants, and the giving of the [bu]Law, and the [bv]service of God, and the [bw]promises.

Of whom are the fathers, and of whom concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is [bx]God over all, blessed forever, Amen.

(D)[by]Notwithstanding it cannot be that the word of God should take none effect: for all they are not [bz]Israel, which are of Israel:

Neither are they all children, because they are the seed of Abraham: (E)[ca]but, In [cb]Isaac shall thy seed be called:

[cc]That is, they which are the children of the [cd]flesh, are not the children of God: but the (F)children of the [ce]promise, are counted for the seed.

[cf]For this is a word of promise, (G)In this same time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.

10 [cg]Neither he only felt this, but also (H)Rebecca, when she had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac.

11 For ere the children were born, and when they had neither done good nor evil (that the [ch]purpose of God might [ci]remain according to election, not by works, but by him that calleth.)

12 [cj]It was said unto her, (I)The Elder shall serve the younger.

13 As it is written, (J)I have loved Jacob, and have hated Esau.

14 [ck]What shall we say then? Is there [cl]unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

15 [cm]For he saith to Moses, (K)I will [cn]have mercy on him, to whom I will show mercy: and will have [co]compassion on him, on who I will have compassion.

16 [cp]So then it is not in him that [cq]willeth, nor in him that runneth, but in God that showeth mercy.

17 [cr]For the [cs]Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, (L)For this same purpose have [ct]I stirred thee up, that I might [cu]show my power in thee, and that my Name might be declared throughout all the earth.

18 [cv]Therefore he hath mercy on whom he [cw]will, and whom he will he hardeneth.

19 [cx]Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet complain? for who hath resisted his will?

20 [cy]But, O man, who art thou which pleadest against God? [cz]shall the (M)thing [da]formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

21 (N)[db]Hath not the potter power of the clay to make of the same lump one [dc]vessel to [dd]honor, and another unto [de]dishonor?

22 [df]What and if God would, to show his wrath, and to make his power known, suffer with long patience the [dg]vessels of wrath, prepared to [dh]destruction?

23 And that he might declare the [di]riches of his glory upon the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory?

24 [dj]Even us whom he hath called, not of the [dk]Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.

25 [dl]As he saith also in Hosea, (O)I will call them, My people, which were not my people: and her, Beloved, which was not beloved.

26 And it shall be in the place where it was said unto them, (P)Ye are not my people, that there they shall be called, The children of the living God.

27 [dm]Also Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, (Q)Though the number of the children of Israel were as the sand of the sea, yet shall but a remnant be saved.

28 For he will make his account, and gather it into a [dn]short sum with righteousness: for the Lord will make a short count in the earth.

29 (R)And as Isaiah said before, Except the Lord of [do]hosts had left us a [dp]seed, we had been made as Sodom, and had been like to Gomorrah.

30 [dq]What shall we say then? That the Gentiles which followed [dr]not righteousness, have attained unto righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

31 [ds]But Israel which followed the Law of righteousness, could not attain unto the Law of righteousness.

32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the [dt]works of the Law: for they have stumbled at the stumbling stone,

33 As it is written, (S)Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone, and a rock to make men fall: and everyone that believeth in him, shall not be ashamed.

10 1 He handleth the effects of election, 3 that some refuse, and some embrace. 4 Christ, who is the end of the Law. 15 He showeth that Moses foretold the calling of the Gentiles,  20 and Isaiah the hardening of the Jews.

Brethren, [du]mine hearts desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

For I bear them record that they have the zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

[dv]For they, [dw]being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and going about to [dx]establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God.

(T)[dy]For Christ is the [dz]end of the Law for righteousness unto [ea]everyone that believeth.

[eb]For Moses thus describeth the righteousness which is of the Law, (U)That the man which doeth these things, shall live thereby.

But the righteousness which is of faith, speaketh on this wise, (V)[ec]Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is to bring Christ from above.)

Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is to bring Christ again from the dead.)

[ed]But what saith it? (W)The [ee]word is near thee, even in thy mouth, and in thine heart. This is the word of faith which we preach.

[ef]For if thou shalt [eg]confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart, that [eh]God raised him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved:

10 For with the heart man [ei]believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth man confesseth to salvation.

11 [ej]For the Scripture saith, (X)Whosoever [ek]believeth in him, shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Grecian: for he that is Lord over all, is rich unto all that call on him.

13 (Y)[el]For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord, shall be saved.

14 But how shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? [em]and how shall they believe in him, of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, (Z)How beautiful are the feet of them which bring glad tidings of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16 [en]But they have not [eo]all obeyed the Gospel: for Isaiah saith, (AA)Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 [ep]Then faith is by hearing, and hearing by the [eq]word of God.

18 [er]But I demand, Have they not heard? (AB)No doubt their sound went out through all the earth, and their words into the ends of the world.

19 [es]But I demand, Did not Israel know God? First Moses saith, (AC)I will provoke you to envy by a [et]nation that is not my nation, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

20 (AD)And Isaiah is [eu]bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not, and have been made manifest to them that asked not after me.

21 And unto Israel he saith, All the day long have I stretched forth mine hand unto a disobedient, and gainsaying people.
