Psalm 119:49-72

ז Zayin

49 Remember your word to your servant;
you have given me hope through it.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction:(A)
Your promise has given me life.
51 The arrogant constantly ridicule me,
but I do not turn away from your instruction.(B)
52 Lord, I remember your judgments from long ago
and find comfort.
53 Fury seizes me(C) because of the wicked
who reject your instruction.(D)
54 Your statutes are the theme of my song
during my earthly life.[a]
55 Lord, I remember your name(E) in the night,(F)
and I obey your instruction.
56 This is my practice:
I obey your precepts.(G)

ח Cheth

57 The Lord is my portion;[b](H)
I have promised to keep your words.
58 I have sought your favor(I) with all my heart;
be gracious to me(J) according to your promise.
59 I thought about my ways(K)
and turned my steps back to your decrees.
60 I hurried, not hesitating
to keep your commands.
61 Though the ropes of the wicked(L)
were wrapped around me,
I did not forget your instruction.(M)
62 I rise at midnight to thank you(N)
for your righteous judgments.(O)
63 I am a friend to all who fear you,(P)
to those who keep your precepts.
64 Lord, the earth is filled with your faithful love;(Q)
teach me your statutes.(R)

ט Teth

65 Lord, you have treated your servant well,
just as you promised.
66 Teach me good judgment and discernment,(S)
for I rely on your commands.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,(T)
but now I keep your word.
68 You are good,(U) and you do what is good;(V)
teach me your statutes.
69 The arrogant have smeared me with lies,(W)
but I obey your precepts with all my heart.(X)
70 Their hearts are hard and insensitive,(Y)
but I delight in your instruction.(Z)
71 It was good for me to be afflicted(AA)
so that I could learn your statutes.
72 Instruction from your lips(AB) is better for me
than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Misplaced Trust in Wealth

For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Hear this, all you peoples;
listen, all who inhabit the world,(A)
both low and high,
rich and poor together.(B)
My mouth speaks wisdom;
my heart’s meditation brings understanding.(C)
I turn my ear to a proverb;
I explain my riddle with a lyre.(D)

Why should I fear in times of trouble?
The iniquity of my foes surrounds me.(E)
They trust in their wealth
and boast of their abundant riches.(F)
Yet these cannot redeem a person[a]
or pay his ransom to God(G)
since the price of redeeming him is too costly,
one should forever stop trying[b](H)
so that he may live forever
and not see the Pit.(I)

10 For one can see that the wise die;
the foolish and stupid also pass away.(J)
Then they leave their wealth to others.(K)
11 Their graves are their permanent homes,[c]
their dwellings from generation to generation,
though they have named estates after themselves.(L)
12 But despite his assets,[d] mankind will not last;
he is like the animals that perish.(M)

13 This is the way of those who are arrogant,
and of their followers,
who approve of their words.[e](N)Selah
14 Like sheep they are headed for Sheol;
Death will shepherd them.
The upright will rule over them in the morning,(O)
and their form will waste away in Sheol,[f]
far from their lofty abode.(P)
15 But God will redeem me
from the power of Sheol,
for he will take me.(Q)Selah

16 Do not be afraid when a person gets rich,
when the wealth[g] of his house increases.(R)
17 For when he dies, he will take nothing at all;
his wealth will not follow him down.(S)
18 Though he blesses himself during his lifetime—
and you are acclaimed when you do well for yourself(T)
19 he will go to the generation of his ancestors;
they will never see the light.(U)
20 Mankind, with his assets
but without understanding,
is like the animals that perish.(V)

A Portrait of Sinners

For the choir director: on Mahalath.(A) A Maskil of David.

The fool says in his heart, “There’s no God.”
They are corrupt, and they do vile deeds.
There is no one who does good.(B)
God looks down from heaven on the human race[a]
to see if there is one who is wise,
one who seeks God.(C)
All have turned away;
all alike have become corrupt.
There is no one who does good,
not even one.(D)

Will evildoers never understand?
They consume my people as they consume bread;(E)
they do not call on God.(F)
Then they will be filled with dread—
dread like no other(G)
because God will scatter
the bones of those who besiege you.(H)
You will put them to shame,
for God has rejected them.(I)

Oh, that Israel’s deliverance would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of his people,[b]
let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.(J)

Colossians 1:24-2:7

Paul’s Ministry

24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings(A) for you, and I am completing in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for his body,(B) that is, the church. 25 I have become its servant, according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ(C) in you, the hope(D) of glory. 28 We proclaim him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 I labor for this, striving(E) with his strength that works powerfully in me.(F)

For I want you to know how greatly I am struggling(G) for you, for those in Laodicea,(H) and for all who have not seen me in person. I want their hearts to be encouraged(I) and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of complete understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery(J)—Christ.[a](K) In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom(L) and knowledge.(M)

Christ versus the Colossian Heresy

I am saying this so that no one will deceive you with arguments that sound reasonable. For I may be absent in body, but I am with you in spirit,(N) rejoicing to see how well ordered you are and the strength of your faith in Christ.

So then, just as you have received(O) Christ Jesus as Lord,(P) continue to walk in him, being rooted and built up in him(Q) and established in the faith, just as you were taught,(R) and overflowing with gratitude.

Luke 6:27-38

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(A) 29 If anyone hits you on the cheek,(B) offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don’t hold back your shirt either. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and from someone who takes your things, don’t ask for them back. 31 Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.(C) 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.(D) 33 If you do what is good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you?(E) Even sinners lend to sinners to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High.(F) For he is gracious to the ungrateful and evil. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.(G)

Do Not Judge

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(H) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(I) 38 Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over—will be poured into your lap.(J) For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”(K)
