The Valley of Dry Bones
37 The hand of the Lord was on me,(A) and he brought me out by his Spirit(B) and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me all around them. There were a great many of them on the surface of the valley, and they were very dry. 3 Then he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I replied, “Lord God, only you know.”(C)
4 He said to me, “Prophesy concerning these bones and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5 This is what the Lord God says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will live.(D) 6 I will put tendons on you, make flesh grow on you, and cover you with skin. I will put breath in you so that you come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”(E)
7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded. While I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 As I looked, tendons appeared on them, flesh grew, and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. 9 He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath,[a] prophesy, son of man. Say to it: This is what the Lord God says: Breath, come from the four winds and breathe into these slain so that they may live!” (F) 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me; the breath entered them,(G) and they came to life and stood on their feet, a vast army.
11 Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel.(H) Look how they say, ‘Our bones are dried up,(I) and our hope has perished;(J) we are cut off.’(K) 12 Therefore, prophesy and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them,(L) my people, and lead you into the land of Israel. 13 You will know that I am the Lord, my people, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.(M) 14 I will put my Spirit in you,(N) and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I am the Lord. I have spoken, and I will do it.(O) This is the declaration of the Lord.’”
Preaching in Solomon’s Colonnade
11 While he[a] was holding on to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astonished, ran toward them in what is called Solomon’s Colonnade.(A) 12 When Peter saw this, he addressed the people: “Fellow Israelites, why are you amazed at this? Why do you stare at us, as though we had made him walk by our own power or godliness? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors,(B) has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate,(C) though he had decided to release him. 14 You denied the Holy and Righteous One(D) and asked to have a murderer released to you.(E) 15 You killed the source[b] of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.(F) 16 By faith in his name, his name has made this man strong, whom you see and know. So the faith that comes through Jesus has given him this perfect health in front of all of you.
17 “And now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your leaders also did.(G) 18 In this way God fulfilled what he had predicted through all the prophets—that his Messiah would suffer.(H) 19 Therefore repent(I) and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped out,(J) 20 that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send Jesus, who has been appointed(K) for you as the Messiah. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time of the restoration of all things, which God spoke about through his holy prophets from the beginning.(L) 22 Moses said:[c] The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to everything he tells you. 23 And everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people.[d](M)
24 “In addition, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those after him, have also foretold these days. 25 You are the sons[e] of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors, saying to Abraham, And all the families of the earth will be blessed through your offspring.[f](N) 26 God raised up his servant[g] and sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your evil ways.”(O)
12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved(A) you. 13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life(B) for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master[a](C) is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you.(D) I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask(E) the Father in my name,(F) he will give you.(G)
17 “This is what I command you: Love one another.
Persecutions Predicted
18 “If the world hates(H) you, understand that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen(I) you out of it, the world hates you. 20 Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’(J) If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word,(K) they will also keep yours. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of my name,(L) because they don’t know(M) the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin.(N) Now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates me also hates my Father.(O) 24 If I had not done the works(P) among them that no one else has done,(Q) they would not be guilty of sin.(R) Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But this happened so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled:(S) They hated me for no reason.[b](T)
The Counselor’s Ministry
26 “When the Counselor(U) comes, the one I will send to you from the Father(V) —the Spirit of truth(W) who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 You also will testify,(X) because you have been with me from the beginning.
