131 Lord, my heart is not proud;
    ·I don’t look down on others [L my eyes are not haughty/lifted up].
I don’t ·do [consider doing] great things,
    and I ·can’t do [don’t consider doing] ·miracles [wonderful acts].
But I ·am calm and quiet [L have stilled and quieted my soul]
    like a ·baby [L weaned child] with its mother,
like a ·baby [L weaned child] with its mother [C a relationship with God is like that of a mother with her weaned child resting comfortably in her arms].

People of Israel, put your hope in the Lord
now and forever.

In Praise of the Temple

132 Lord, remember David
    and all his ·suffering [afflictions].
He ·made an oath [swore] to the Lord,
    a ·promise [vow] to the Mighty God of Jacob [Gen. 49:24].
He said, “I will not ·go home to my house [L enter into the tent of my house],
    or ·lie down on my bed [L go up to the couch of my bed],
or ·close [L give sleep to] my eyes,
    or ·let myself sleep [L slumber to my pupils]
until I find a place for the Lord.
    I want to provide a home for the Mighty God of Jacob [Gen. 49:24].”

We heard about it [C the Ark] in ·Bethlehem [L Ephrathah].
    We found it in the fields of Jearim [C Kiriath Jearim; 1 Sam 6:21—7:2].
Let’s go to ·the Lord’s house [L his dwelling].
    Let’s worship at his footstool [C the Ark].
Rise, Lord, and come to your resting place;
    come with the Ark that shows your strength.
May your priests ·do what is right [L be clothed with righteousness].
    May your ·people [saints; loyal ones] sing for joy.

10 For the sake of your servant David,
    do not ·reject [L turn from the face of] your ·appointed [anointed] king.
11 The Lord ·made a promise [swore] to David,
    a sure promise that he will not take back [2 Sam. 7:12–16, 28].
He promised, “I will ·make one of your descendants
    rule as king after you [L set on your throne from the fruit of your womb; Acts 2:30].
12 If your sons ·keep [observe; guard] my ·agreement [covenant; treaty]
    and the ·rules [decrees; testimonies] that I teach them,
then their sons after them will ·rule [L sit]
    on your throne forever and ever.”

13 The Lord has chosen ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple];
    he ·wants [desires] it for his home.
14 He says, “This is my resting place forever.
    Here is where I ·want to stay [L will sit/reside because I desire it].
15 I will bless her with ·plenty [provisions];
    I will ·fill [satisfy] her poor with ·food [bread].

The Love of God’s People

133 ·It is [L How] good and pleasant
    when ·God’s people [L brothers] live together [C in unity]!
It is like ·perfumed [fine] oil on the head
    and running down his beard [Ex. 30:22–33].
It ran down Aaron’s beard
    and on to the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Mount Hermon [C in the extreme north of Israel]
    falling on the hills of ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple].
There the Lord ·gives [L commanded] his blessing
    of life forever.

Psalm 140

A Prayer for Protection

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

140 Lord, rescue me from evil people;
    protect me from ·cruel [violent] people
who ·make evil plans [L consider evil in their hearts],
    who ·always start fights [L every day stir up war; Prov. 15:18; 29:22].
They make their tongues sharp as a snake’s;
    ·their words are like snake poison [L the venom of vipers is under their lips; Rom. 3:13]. ·Selah [Interlude]

Lord, ·guard [keep] me from the ·power [L hand] of wicked people;
    protect me from ·cruel [violent] people
    who plan ·to trip me up [my downfall].
The ·proud [arrogant] hid a trap for me.
    They spread out a net [L with cords] beside the road;
they set ·traps [snares] for me. ·Selah [Interlude]

I said to the Lord, “You are my God.”
    Lord, ·listen [L give ear] to my prayer ·for help [of supplication].
Lord God, my ·mighty [strong] ·savior [victor],
    you ·protect me in [L cover my head in the day of] battle.
Lord, do not give the wicked what they ·want [desire].
    Don’t let their plans succeed,

Those around me have ·planned trouble [L uplifted heads].

10 Let burning coals ·fall [rain] on them.

12 I know the Lord will get justice for the poor
    and will defend the needy in court.

Psalm 142

A Prayer for Safety

A ·maskil [skillful psalm; meditation] of David when he was in the cave [C at Adullam (1 Sam. 22:1, 4) or En-Gedi (1 Sam. 24:1–22)]. A prayer.

142 I cry out to the Lord;
    I ·pray [cry out] to the Lord for ·mercy [grace].
I pour out my ·problems [complaint] to him;
    I tell him my ·troubles [distress].
When ·I am afraid [I am depressed; L my spirit is faint],
    you, Lord, know ·the way out [L my way].
In the path where I walk,
    ·a trap is hidden [L they have hidden a trap] for me.
Look ·around me [L at/on my right hand] and see.
    No one cares about me.
·I have no place of safety [L A place of refuge perishes from me];
    no one ·cares if I live [L seeks for my soul].

Lord, I cry out to you.
    I say, “You are my ·protection [refuge].
    ·You are all I want in this life [L …my portion in the land of the living].”
·Listen [Pay attention] to my cry,
    because I am ·helpless [brought very low].
·Save [Protect] me from those who are ·chasing [pursuing; persecuting] me,
    because they are too strong for me.
·Free me [L Bring me out] from my prison,
    and then I will ·praise [thank] your name.
Then ·good [righteous] people will surround me,
    because you have ·taken care of me [given me my reward].

Jeremiah 26:1-16

Jeremiah’s Lesson at the Temple

26 This message came from the Lord ·soon after Jehoiakim son of Josiah became [L at the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim] king of Judah [C ruled 605–597 bc]. This is what the Lord said: “Jeremiah, stand in the courtyard of the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. ·Give this message [L Say] to all the people of the towns of Judah who are coming to ·worship [bow down] at the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. Tell them everything I tell you to say; don’t leave out a word. Maybe they will listen and ·stop [return/repent from] their evil ways. If they will, I will ·change my mind [relent] about bringing on them the ·disaster [evil; trouble] that I am planning because of the evil they have done. Say to them: ‘This is what the Lord says: You must ·obey [listen to] me and follow my ·teachings [instructions; laws] that I gave you. You must listen to what my servants the prophets [25:4] say to you. I have sent them to you again and again, but you did not ·listen [obey]. If you don’t obey me, I will ·destroy my Temple in Jerusalem as I destroyed my Holy Tent at [L make this house like] Shiloh [7:12–14; 1 Sam. 4:1–22; Ps. 78:60–64]. When I do, ·people all over the world will curse Jerusalem [L I will make this city a curse].’”

The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord. When Jeremiah finished speaking ·everything [L all the words] the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, prophets, and all the people ·grabbed [seized] Jeremiah. They said, “You must die! ·How dare [L Why do…?] you prophesy in the name of the Lord that this ·Temple [L house] will be like the one at Shiloh [C destroyed]! ·How dare [L Why do…?] you say that this city [C Jerusalem] will become a ·desert [ruin] without anyone to live in it!” And all the people ·crowded [assembled] around Jeremiah in the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord.

10 Now when the officers of Judah heard ·about what was happening [L these things/words], they came out of the king’s ·palace [L house] and went up to the ·Temple [L house] of the Lord and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate. 11 Then the priests and prophets said to the officers and all the other people, “·Jeremiah [L This man] ·should be killed [L deserves the death sentence]. He prophesied against this city [C Jerusalem], and you heard him ·yourselves [L with your ears].”

12 Then Jeremiah spoke these words to all the officers of Judah and all the other people: “The Lord sent me to ·say [L prophesy] ·everything [L all these words] you have heard about this ·Temple [L house] and this city. 13 Now ·change [improve; mend] your ·lives and start doing good [L ways and your deeds] and ·obey [L listen to the voice of] the Lord your God. Then he will ·change his mind and not bring on you [relent of] the ·disaster [evil; trouble] he has told you about. 14 As for me, I am in your ·power [L hand]. Do to me what you think is good and right in your eyes. 15 But be sure of one thing. If you kill me, you will be ·guilty of killing an innocent person [L placing innocent blood on yourselves; Ex. 23:7; Deut. 19:10, 13]. ·You will make this city and everyone who lives in it guilty, too [L …and on this city and everyone who lives in it]! The Lord truly sent me to ·you to give you this message [L speak this word in your ears].”

16 Then the officers and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “·Jeremiah must not be killed [L This man does not deserve the death penalty]. ·What he told us comes from [L He has spoken to us in the name of] the Lord our God.”

Romans 11:1-12

God Shows Mercy to All People

11 So I ask: Did God ·throw out [cast away; reject] his people? ·No [Absolutely not; May it never be; 9:14]! I myself am an Israelite from the ·family [descendants; L seed] of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. God has not ·thrown out [cast away; rejected] his people, whom he ·chose [or knew] ·long ago [from the beginning; L beforehand]. ·Surely you know [L Do you not know…?] what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he ·prayed [appealed; complained] to God against the people of Israel. “Lord,” he said, “they have killed your prophets, and they have ·destroyed [torn/burned down] your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are ·trying to kill me, too [seeking my life; 1 Kin. 19:10, 14].” But what ·answer did God give Elijah [L was the divine response]? He said, “But I have ·left [kept for myself] seven thousand ·people [or men] in Israel who have not bowed ·down [L the knee] before Baal [1 Kin. 19:18].” It is the same now. There ·are a few people [is a remnant] that God has chosen by his grace. And if he chose them by grace, it is not ·for the things they have done [by works]. If they could be made God’s people by ·what they did [works], God’s gift of grace would ·not really [or no longer] be a gift.

·So this is what has happened [What follows from this? L What then?]: ·The people of Israel [L Israel] did not ·succeed in [attain; obtain; find] what they were ·striving [looking; seeking] for, but the ·ones God chose [elect] did ·succeed [attain/obtain/find it]. The ·others [rest] were ·made stubborn and refused to listen to God [L hardened]. As it is written in the Scriptures:

“God gave the people a ·dull mind [L spirit of stupor/insensitivity] so they could not understand [Is. 29:10].”
“He ·closed their eyes so they [or gave them eyes that] could not see
    and ·their ears so they [or gave them ears that] could not hear.
This continues until today [Deut. 29:4].”

And David says:

“Let their ·own feasts [L table] ·trap them and cause their ruin [L become a snare and a trap],
    becoming a ·stumbling block [pitfall] and ·paying them back [their retribution].
10 Let their eyes be ·closed [L darkened] so they cannot see
    and their backs be ·forever [or continually] ·weak from troubles [L bent over; Ps. 69:22–23].”

11 So I ask: When ·the Jews [L they] fell, did ·that fall destroy them [or they fall beyond recovery]? ·No [Absolutely not; May it never be; 11:1]! But their ·failure [transgression; violation] brought salvation to the Gentiles, in order to make ·the Jews [L them] jealous. 12 [L But if…] Their ·failure [transgression/violation] brought ·rich blessings [L riches] for the world, and their ·loss [defeat; failure] brought ·rich blessings [L riches] for the Gentiles. ·So surely the world will receive much richer blessings [L How much more…!] ·when enough Jews become the kind of people God wants [or when the appointed number of Jews is saved; or when the nation as a whole is restored; L at their fullness].

John 10:19-42

19 Again ·the leaders did not agree with each other [L there was a division among the Jews] because of these words of Jesus. 20 Many of them said, “·A demon has come into him and made him crazy [L He has a demon and is crazy]. Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “A man who is ·crazy with a demon [L demon-possessed] does not say things like this. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Jesus Is Rejected

22 The time came for the ·Feast of Dedication [C also called Hanukkah or the Feast of Lights, recalling the rededication of the Temple in 164 bc] at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the Temple in Solomon’s ·Porch [Portico; Colonnade; C on the eastern side of the Temple area; at a later time Christians gathered there to worship; Acts 3:11; 5:12]. 24 ·Some people [The Jewish leaders; L The Jews] gathered around him and said, “How long will you ·make us wonder [keep us in suspense] about you? If you are the ·Christ [Messiah], tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you already, but you did not believe. The ·miracles [L works] I do in my Father’s name ·show who I am [testify/bear witness about me]. 26 But you don’t believe, because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never ·die [perish], and no one can ·steal [snatch] them out of my hand. 29 My Father gave my sheep to me. He is greater than all, and no person can ·steal [snatch] my sheep out of my Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.”

31 Again some of the ·people [Jewish leaders; L Jews] picked up stones to ·kill [L stone] Jesus. 32 But he ·said to [answered] them, “I have ·done [L shown you] many good works from the Father. Which of these good works are you ·killing [L stoning] me for?”

33 ·They [The Jewish leaders; L The Jews] answered him, “We are not ·killing [L stoning] you because of any good work you did, but ·because you speak against God [L for blasphemy]. You are only a human, but you ·say you are the same as God [claim to be God; L make yourself God]!”

34 Jesus answered them, “·It is written [L Is it not written…?] in your law that God said, ‘I said, you are gods’ [Ps. 82:6; C the “gods” here may be Israel’s judges, or the Israelites generally, or angelic powers]. 35 This Scripture called those people gods who received God’s ·message [word], and Scripture ·is always true [L cannot be broken/annulled/set aside]. 36 So why do you say that I ·speak against God [L blaspheme] because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? [C Jesus is not denying he is God, but is making a lesser-to-greater argument; if Scripture calls lesser beings “gods,” why should they object that he—the One God sent—calls himself the Son of God?] I am the one ·God [L the Father] ·chose [consecrated; set apart] and sent into the world. 37 If I don’t do ·what my Father does [L the works of my Father], then don’t believe me. 38 But if I do ·what my Father does [the works of my Father; L them], even though you don’t believe in me, believe ·what I do [L the works]. Then you will ·know [recognize; learn] and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”

39 [L So] They tried to ·take [seize; arrest] Jesus again [see 7:30], but he escaped from ·them [L their hands].

40 Then he went back across the Jordan River to the place where John had ·first [or earlier] baptized. Jesus stayed there, 41 and many people came to him and said, “John never did a ·miracle [L sign], but everything John said about this man is true.” 42 And in that place many believed in Jesus.
