Psalm 113

Psalm 113

Praise to the Merciful God

Hallelujah!
Give praise, servants of the Lord;
praise the name of the Lord.(A)
Let the name of the Lord be blessed
both now and forever.(B)
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of the Lord be praised.(C)

The Lord is exalted above all the nations,(D)
his glory above the heavens.(E)
Who is like the Lord our God—
the one enthroned on high,(F)
who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?(G)
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the trash heap(H)
in order to seat them with nobles—
with the nobles of his people.(I)
He gives the childless woman a household,
making her the joyful mother of children.(J)
Hallelujah!

Psalm 122

Psalm 122

A Prayer for Jerusalem

A song of ascents. Of David.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let’s go to the house of the Lord.”(A)
Our feet were standing
within your gates, Jerusalem(B)

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly united,(C)
where the tribes, the Lord’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.(D)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(E))
There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(F)

Pray for the well-being[a] of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure;(G)
may there be peace within your walls,
security within your fortresses.”(H)
Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “May peace be in you.”[b](I)
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will pursue your prosperity.(J)

1 Samuel 1:20-28

20 After some time,[a] Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,[b] because she said, “I requested him from the Lord.”

21 When Elkanah and all his household went up to make the annual sacrifice(A) and his vow offering to the Lord, 22 Hannah did not go and explained to her husband, “After the child is weaned, I’ll take him to appear in the Lord’s presence(B) and to stay there permanently.”(C)

23 Her husband, Elkanah, replied, “Do what you think is best,(D) and stay here until you’ve weaned him. May the Lord confirm your[c] word.”(E) So Hannah stayed there and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 When she had weaned him, she took him with her to Shiloh, as well as a three-year-old bull,[d] half a bushel[e] of flour, and a clay jar of wine.(F) Though the boy was still young,[f] she took him to the Lord’s house at Shiloh.(G) 25 Then they slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli.

26 “Please, my lord,” she said, “as surely as you live,(H) my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this boy,(I) and since the Lord gave me what I asked him for,(J) 28 I now give the boy to the Lord. For as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.”(K) Then he[g] worshiped the Lord there.[h]

Romans 8:14-21

14 For all those led by God’s Spirit(A) are God’s sons.(B) 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.(C) Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption,(D) by whom we cry out, “Abba,[a] Father!” (E) 16 The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit(F) that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs(G)—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with him(H) so that we may also be glorified with him.

From Groans to Glory

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing(I) with the glory(J) that is going to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation eagerly waits with anticipation(K) for God’s sons(L) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected(M) to futility(N)—not willingly, but because of him who subjected it(O)—in the hope 21 that the creation itself(P) will also be set free from the bondage to decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children.
