Psalm 20

Deliverance in Battle

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

May the Lord answer you in a day of trouble;(A)
may the name of Jacob’s God protect you.(B)
May he send you help from the sanctuary
and sustain you from Zion.(C)
May he remember all your offerings
and accept your burnt offering.(D)Selah

May he give you what your heart desires(E)
and fulfill your whole purpose.(F)
Let us shout for joy at your victory(G)
and lift the banner in the name of our God.(H)
May the Lord fulfill all your requests.(I)

Now I know that the Lord gives victory to his anointed;(J)
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories from his right hand.(K)
Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses,
but we take pride in the name of the Lord our God.(L)
They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand firm.(M)
Lord, give victory to the king!(N)
May he[a] answer us on the day that we call.

Psalm 21

The King’s Victory

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Lord, the king finds joy in your strength.
How greatly he rejoices in your victory!(O)
You have given him his heart’s desire(P)
and have not denied the request of his lips.(Q)Selah
For you meet him with rich blessings;
you place a crown of pure gold on his head.(R)
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
length of days forever and ever.(S)
His glory is great through your victory;
you confer majesty and splendor on him.(T)
You give him blessings forever;(U)
you cheer him with joy in your presence.(V)
For the king relies on the Lord;
through the faithful love of the Most High
he is not shaken.(W)

Your hand will capture all your enemies;
your right hand will seize those who hate you.(X)
You will make them burn
like a fiery furnace when you appear;
the Lord will engulf them in his wrath,
and fire will devour them.(Y)
10 You will wipe their progeny from the earth
and their offspring from the human race.[b](Z)
11 Though they intend to harm[c] you
and devise a wicked plan, they will not prevail.(AA)
12 Instead, you will put them to flight
when you ready your bowstrings to shoot at them.(AB)

13 Be exalted, Lord, in your strength;
we will sing and praise your might.(AC)

Psalm 110

Psalm 110

The Priestly King

A psalm of David.

This is the declaration of the Lord
to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”(A)
The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion.
Rule[a] over your surrounding[b] enemies.(B)
Your people will volunteer
on your day of battle.[c](C)
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
the dew of your youth belongs to you.[d](D)
The Lord has sworn an oath and will not take it back:
“You are a priest forever
according to the pattern of Melchizedek.”(E)

The Lord is at your right hand;
he will crush kings on the day of his anger.(F)
He will judge the nations, heaping up corpses;(G)
he will crush leaders over the entire world.(H)
He will drink from the brook by the road;(I)
therefore, he will lift up his head.(J)

Psalm 116-117

Psalm 116

Thanks to God for Deliverance

I love the Lord because he has heard
my appeal for mercy.(A)
Because he has turned his ear to me,
I will call out to him as long as I live.(B)

The ropes of death were wrapped around me,
and the torments of Sheol overcame me;
I encountered trouble and sorrow.(C)
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
Lord, save me!” (D)

The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is compassionate.(E)
The Lord guards the inexperienced;
I was helpless, and he saved me.(F)
Return to your rest, my soul,
for the Lord has been good to you.(G)
For you, Lord, rescued me from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling.(H)
I will walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.(I)
10 I believed, even when I said,
“I am severely oppressed.”(J)
11 In my alarm I said,
“Everyone is a liar.”(K)

12 How can I repay the Lord
for all the good he has done for me?(L)
13 I will take the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the Lord.(M)
14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.(N)

15 The death of his faithful ones
is valuable in the Lord’s sight.(O)
16 Lord, I am indeed your servant;
I am your servant, the son of your female servant.
You have loosened my bonds.(P)

17 I will offer you a thanksgiving sacrifice
and call on the name of the Lord.(Q)
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people,(R)
19 in the courts of the Lord’s house—
within you, Jerusalem.(S)
Hallelujah!

Psalm 117

Universal Call to Praise

Praise the Lord, all nations!
Glorify him, all peoples!(T)
For his faithful love to us is great;
the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever.(U)
Hallelujah!

Deuteronomy 34

Moses’s Death

34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah,(A) which faces Jericho, and the Lord showed him all the land: Gilead as far as Dan, all of Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean[a] Sea, the Negev, and the plain in the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. The Lord then said to him, “This is the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’(B) I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.”

So Moses the servant of the Lord(C) died there in the land of Moab, according to the Lord’s word. He buried him[b] in the valley(D) in the land of Moab facing Beth-peor, and no one to this day knows where his grave is.(E) Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his eyes were not weak, and his vitality had not left him. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days.(F) Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.(G)

Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom(H) because Moses had laid his hands on him.(I) So the Israelites obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.(J) 10 No prophet has arisen again in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.(K) 11 He was unparalleled for all the signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do against the land of Egypt—to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to all his land— 12 and for all the mighty acts of power and terrifying deeds that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.(L)

Romans 10:14-21

Israel’s Rejection of the Message

14 How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him?(A) And how can they hear without a preacher?(B) 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful[a] are the feet of those who bring good news.[b](C) 16 But not all obeyed the gospel.(D) For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message?[c](E) 17 So faith comes from what is heard,(F) and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.[d](G) 18 But I ask, “Did they not hear?” Yes, they did:

Their voice has gone out to the whole earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.[e](H)

19 But I ask, “Did Israel not understand?” First, Moses said,

I will make you jealous
of those who are not a nation;(I)
I will make you angry by a nation
that lacks understanding.[f](J)

20 And Isaiah says boldly,

I was found
by those who were not looking for me;
I revealed myself
to those who were not asking for me.[g](K)

21 But to Israel he says, All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and defiant people.[h](L)

Matthew 24:32-51

The Parable of the Fig Tree

32 “Learn this lesson(A) from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, recognize[a] that he[b] is near—at the door.(B) 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place.(C) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away,(D) but my words will never pass away.(E)

No One Knows the Day or Hour

36 “Now concerning that day and hour no one knows—neither the angels of heaven nor the Son[c] —except the Father alone.(F) 37 As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38 For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark.(G) 39 They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding grain with a hand mill; one will be taken and one left.(H) 42 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day[d] your Lord is coming.(I) 43 But know this: If the homeowner had known what time[e] the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into.(J) 44 This is why you are also to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.(K)

Faithful Service to Christ

45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant,(L) whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time?(M) 46 Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing his job when he comes.(N) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49 and starts to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with drunkards,(O) 50 that servant’s master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
