49 Do not forget Your promise to Your servant;
    through it You have given me hope.
50 This brings me solace in the midst of my troubles:
    that Your word has revived me.
51 Those who are proud cruelly ridicule me,
    but I keep to the steady path of Your teachings.
52 I have considered Your ancient rulings, O Eternal One,
    and their memory brings me comfort.
53 Burning anger rises in me, has me in its grip
    because the unrighteous abandon Your teachings.
54 As I journey through this life,
    Your statutes are my song.
55 O Eternal One, through the night, I stop to recall Your name.
    That’s how I live according to Your teachings.
56 This has become my practice:
    to keep Your ordinances.

57 The Eternal One is mine. He’s all I need.
    I have promised to keep Your words.
58 I sought Your blessing wholeheartedly.
    Show grace to me as You promised.
59 I carefully charted out my paths
    to align my steps with Your decrees.
60 I did not procrastinate and hurried
    to follow Your commands.
61 The wicked have entangled me in their nets,
    but I have not forgotten Your teaching.
62 In the middle of the night, I wake to thank You
    because Your rulings are just and right.
63 I am a friend of anyone who fears You
    and of those who follow Your precepts.
64 The earth is filled with Your unfailing love, O Eternal One;
    teach me to observe what You require.

    because I believe Your commandments.
67 Before I had trouble, I strayed from the true path, the path of righteousness,
    but now I live according to Your word.
68 You are truly good, and Your acts are too;
    teach me what You require.
69 The proud smear me with their lies;
    I will keep Your instructions wholeheartedly.
70 Their hearts are dull and callous;
    I am delighted to study Your teaching.
71 It is a good thing that I was humbled
    because it helped me learn Your limits.
72 Your teachings are more valuable to me
    than a fortune in gold and silver.

Psalm 49

Psalm 49

For the worship leader. A song of the sons of Korah.

Some songs are described as “wisdom psalms.” Similar in theme to the short sayings of Proverbs or the reflective essays of Ecclesiastes, these songs offer practical advice to the worshiper of the one True God. In Psalm 49 we find a meditation on wealth and wisdom, but others describe daily activities (127–128; 133), encouragement when evil succeeds (37; 73), and the results of following God or wickedness (112). The purpose of these songs is to edify those who sing and those who hear, reminding them, and us, how to live life as God intends.

Listen up, everyone!
    All you who reside in this world, give an ear!
Everyone—rich and poor,
    young and old, wise and foolish, humble and mighty—
My mouth will overflow with wisdom;
    the reflections of my heart will guide you to understand the nature of life.
I will tune my ear to the words of a proverb;
    to the sounds of a harp, I will reveal my riddle.

Why should I be afraid when dark evils swirl about me,
    when I am walking among the sin of evildoers—
Those who depend on their own fortunes,
    who boast about their earthly riches?
One person can’t grant salvation to another
    or make a payment to the True God for another.
Redeeming a life is costly;
    no premium is enough, ever enough,
That one’s body might live on forever
    and never fear the grave’s decay.

10 Everyone knows that even the wisest ones die,
    perishing together with the foolish and the stupid.
For all diebeggars and kings, fools and wise men.
    Their wealth remains behind for others.
11 Although they wish to dwell in fine houses forever,
    their graves are their real resting places.
    Their homes are for all future generations,
    yet for a while they have named lands after themselves.
12 [No one, regardless of how rich or important, can live forever;
    he is][a] just like the animals that perish and decay.

13 This is the destiny of those foolish souls who have faith only in themselves;
    this will be the end of those happy to follow in their ways.

14 The fate of fools is the grave, and just like sheep,
    death will feast on them.
The righteous will rule over them at dawn,
    their bodies, their outward forms, rotting in the grave
    far away from their great mansions.
15 But God will reach into the grave and save my life from its power.
    He will fetch me and take me into His eternal house.

16 Do not be afraid of the rich and powerful
    as their prestige and honor grow,
17 For they cannot take anything with them when they die.
    Their fame and glory will not follow them into the grave.
18 During their lives, they seek every blessing and advantage
    because others praise you when you’ve done well.
19 But they will soon join their ancestors, for all of time,
    among the tombs of the faithless—a place of no light.
20 Anyone who is rich or important without understanding
    is just like the animals that perish and decay.

Psalm 53

For the worship leader. A contemplative song[a] of David. A song for the dance.[b]

The foolish are convinced deep down that there is no God.
    Their souls are polluted, and they commit gross injustice.
    Not one of them does good.

From heaven the one True God examines the earth
    to see if any understand the big picture,
    if any seek to know the True God.

All have turned back to their wicked ways; they’ve become totally perverse.
    Not one of them does good,
    not even one.

Do the wicked relish their ignorance,
    the wicked ones who consume My people as if they were bread
    and fail to call upon the True God?

They trembled with great fear,
    though they’d never been afraid before,
Because the True God ravaged the bones of those who rose against you.
    You humiliated them because the True God spat them out.

Oh, that the liberation of Israel would come out of Zion!
    When the True God reclaims His people,
    let Jacob celebrate; let Israel rejoice.

Genesis 16:1-14

16 Despite God’s promise, years went by. Still Abram’s wife Sarai remained childless. But she did have an Egyptian servant girl whose name was Hagar. Sarai had an idea so she approached her husband.

Sarai (to Abram): You can see that the Eternal One has still not allowed me to have any children. Why don’t you sleep with my servant girl? Maybe I could use her as a surrogate and have a child through her!

Sarai’s solution to her problem is not unique. Ancient Near Eastern custom allows for these kinds of arrangements.

Abram listened to Sarai and agreed to follow her plan. After they had lived 10 years in Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took her servant girl Hagar, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife. So Abram slept with Hagar. It was not long before she conceived. But as soon as she knew she was pregnant with Abram’s child, Hagar’s attitude changed and she became haughty toward Sarai. Sarai would not tolerate her servant looking down on her, so she approached Abram again.

Sarai (to Abram): This is all your fault. I allowed my servant girl to be intimate with you, and as soon as she saw she was pregnant with your child, she started behaving arrogantly and disrespectfully toward me! I have done nothing to deserve this. Let the Eternal One judge who is in the wrong here—you or me!

Abram (to Sarai): Sarai—look, she’s still your servant girl. Do whatever you want with her. She’s under your control.

So Sarai clamped down on Hagar severely, and Hagar ran away. The Special Messenger of the Eternal One found Hagar alone by a spring of water out in the desert. It was the spring of water along the road that went to Shur.

When the Lord sends His Special Messenger, it is generally an important and sensitive mission (see, too, Exodus 3; Numbers 22; and Judges 6). This special agent bears God’s unique, covenant name and speaks with divine authority in ways other messengers do not. In fact, by what Hagar says and does next, it is clear she thinks she has encountered the Lord Himself.

Special Messenger: Hagar, Sarai’s servant girl? Where have you come from, and where are you planning to go?

Hagar: I am running away from my mistress, Sarai!

Special Messenger: Hagar, go back to your mistress, and change your attitude. Be respectful, and listen to her instructions. You’re pregnant, and you need to go home. 10 Trust me: I am going to give you many children and many descendants, so many you won’t be able to count them!

The descendants from Hagar are included in the promise given to Abram that his family will be so large that he will not be able to count them.

11     Look, you are pregnant,
        and you’re going to have a son.
    I want you to call him Ishmael
        because the Eternal One has heard your anguished cries.
12     Just to warn you, though:
    Ishmael, your son, is going to be a wild and rowdy man;
        he’ll put his fist in every face,
    And everyone will turn against him,
        and he will live at odds with all of his relatives.

13 As a result of this encounter, Hagar decided to give the Eternal One who had spoken to her a special name because He had seen her in her misery.

Hagar: I’m going to call You the God of Seeing[a] because in this place I have seen the One who watches over me.

14 Because of this, the well between Kadesh and Bered is called Beer-lahai-roi, which means, “Well of the Living One who watches over me.”

Hebrews 9:15-28

15 This is why Jesus is the mediator of the new covenant: through His death, He delivered us from the sins that we had built up under the first covenant, and His death has made it possible for all who are called to receive God’s promised inheritance. 16 For whenever there is a testament—a will—the death of the one who made it must be confirmed 17 because a will takes effect only at the death of its maker; it has no validity as long as the maker is still alive. 18 Even the first testamentthe first covenant—required blood to be put into action. 19 When Moses had given all the laws of God to the people, he took the blood of calves and of goats, water, hyssop, and scarlet wool; and he sprinkled the scroll and all the people, 20 telling them, “This is the blood of the covenant that God has commanded for us.”[a] 21 In the same way, he also sprinkled blood upon the sanctuary and upon the vessels used in worship. 22 Under the law, it’s almost the case that everything is purified in connection with blood; without the shedding of blood, sin cannot be forgiven.

In chapter 9 we are reminded that what is most real, what is most true, is the unseen reality. The writer tells us that the temple in Jerusalem, the holiest place on earth, was merely a copy or shadow of another place, the heavenly temple. Whatever took place in this shadowy temple could not change the realities of alienation from God, sin, and death.

Every year on the Day of Atonement, the high priest would don his priestly garb and enter the most holy place in the temple. His task was profound, his duty dangerous: he must appear before God carrying the sins of his people. All the sins of Israel were concentrated in him as he carried the blood of the sacrifice into the divine presence. But there was another day, a Day of Atonement unlike any other, when Jesus concentrated in Himself the sins of the world, hanging on a cross not far from the temple’s holiest chamber. Indeed, for a time, He became sin (2 Corinthians 5:21). But unlike the high priest, the crucified and risen Jesus entered the true temple of heaven and was ushered into the divine presence. At that moment, everything changed.

23 Since what was given in the old covenant was the earthly sketch of the heavenly reality, this was sufficient to cleanse the earthly sanctuary; but in heaven, a more perfect sacrifice was needed. 24 The Anointed One did not enter into handcrafted sacred spaces—imperfect copies of heavenly originals—but into heaven itself, where He stands in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 There He does not offer Himself over and over as a sacrifice (as the high priest on earth does when he enters the most holy place each year with blood other than his own) 26 because that would require His repeated suffering since the beginning of the world. No, He has appeared once now, at the end of the age, to put away sin forever by offering Himself as a sacrifice.

27 Just as mortals are appointed to die once and then to experience a judgment, 28 so the Anointed One, our Liberating King, was offered once in death to bear the sins of many and will appear a second time, not to deal again with sin, but to rescue those who eagerly await His return.

John 5:19-29

Jesus: 19 The truth is that the Son does nothing on His own; all these actions are led by the Father. The Son watches the Father closely and then mimics the work of the Father. 20 The Father loves the Son, so He does not hide His actions. Instead, He shows Him everything, and the things not yet revealed by the Father will dumbfound you. 21 The Father can give life to those who are dead; in the same way, the Son can give the gift of life to those He chooses.

22 The Father does not exert His power to judge anyone. Instead, He has given the authority as Judge to the Son. 23 So all of creation will honor and worship the Son as they do the Father. If you do not honor the Son, then you dishonor the Father who sent Him.

24 I tell you the truth: eternal life belongs to those who hear My voice and believe in the One who sent Me. These people have no reason to fear judgment because they have already left death and entered life.

25 I tell you the truth: a new day is imminent—in fact, it has arrived—when the voice of the Son of God will penetrate death’s domain, and everyone who hears will live. 26-27 You see, the Father radiates with life; and He also animates the Son of God with the same life-giving beauty and power to exercise judgment over all of creation. Indeed, the Son of God is also the Son of Man. 28 If this sounds amazing to you, what is even more amazing is that when the time comes, those buried long ago will hear His voice through all the rocks, sod, and soil 29 and step out of decay into resurrection. When this hour arrives, those who did good will be resurrected to life, and those who did evil will be resurrected to judgment.
