Psalm 146-147

Psalm 146[a]

Trust in God the Creator and Redeemer

Hallelujah!

Praise the Lord, my soul;
    I will praise the Lord all my life,
    sing praise to my God while I live.(A)

I

Put no trust in princes,
    in children of Adam powerless to save.(B)
    Who breathing his last, returns to the earth;
    that day all his planning comes to nothing.(C)

II

Blessed the one whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord, his God,
The maker of heaven and earth,
    the seas and all that is in them,(D)
Who keeps faith forever,
    secures justice for the oppressed,(E)
    who gives bread to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free;(F)
    the Lord gives sight to the blind.
The Lord raises up those who are bowed down;(G)
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord protects the resident alien,
    comes to the aid of the orphan and the widow,(H)
    but thwarts the way of the wicked.
10 The Lord shall reign forever,
    your God, Zion, through all generations!(I)
Hallelujah!

Psalm 147[b]

God’s Word Restores Jerusalem

Hallelujah!

I

How good to sing praise to our God;
    how pleasant to give fitting praise.(J)
The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem,
    and gathers the dispersed of Israel,(K)
Healing the brokenhearted,
    and binding up their wounds.(L)
He numbers the stars,
    and gives to all of them their names.(M)
Great is our Lord, vast in power,
    with wisdom beyond measure.(N)
The Lord gives aid to the poor,
    but casts the wicked to the ground.(O)

II

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    with the lyre make music to our God,(P)
[c]Who covers the heavens with clouds,
    provides rain for the earth,
    makes grass sprout on the mountains,(Q)
Who gives animals their food
    and young ravens what they cry for.(R)
10 [d]He takes no delight in the strength of horses,
    no pleasure in the runner’s stride.(S)
11 Rather the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    those who put their hope in his mercy.

III

12 Glorify the Lord, Jerusalem;
    Zion, offer praise to your God,
13 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates,
    blessed your children within you.(T)
14 He brings peace to your borders,
    and satisfies you with finest wheat.(U)
15 [e]He sends his command to earth;
    his word runs swiftly!(V)
16 Thus he makes the snow like wool,
    and spreads the frost like ash;(W)
17 He disperses hail like crumbs.
    Who can withstand his cold?
18 Yet when again he issues his command, it melts them;
    he raises his winds and the waters flow.
19 He proclaims his word to Jacob,
    his statutes and laws to Israel.(X)
20 He has not done this for any other nation;
    of such laws they know nothing.
Hallelujah!

Psalm 111-113

Psalm 111[a]

Praise of God for Goodness to Israel

Hallelujah!

I will praise the Lord with all my heart(A)
    in the assembled congregation of the upright.[b]
Great are the works of the Lord,
    studied by all who delight in them.
Majestic and glorious is his work,
    his righteousness endures forever.
He won renown for his wondrous deeds;
    gracious and merciful is the Lord.(B)
He gives food to those who fear him,[c]
    he remembers his covenant forever.
He showed his powerful deeds to his people,
    giving them the inheritance of the nations.
The works of his hands are true and just,
    reliable all his decrees,
Established forever and ever,
    to be observed with truth and equity.
He sent release to his people,
    decreed his covenant forever;
    holy and fearsome is his name.
10 [d]The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;(C)
    prudent are all who practice it.
    His praise endures forever.

Psalm 112[e]

The Blessings of the Just

Hallelujah!

Blessed the man who fears the Lord,
    who greatly delights in his commands.(D)
His descendants shall be mighty in the land,
    a generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches shall be in his house;
    his righteousness[f] shall endure forever.
Light shines through the darkness for the upright;(E)
    gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
It is good for the man gracious in lending,
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For he shall never be shaken;
    the righteous shall be remembered forever.(F)
He shall not fear an ill report;
    his heart is steadfast, trusting the Lord.
His heart is tranquil, without fear,
    till at last he looks down on his foes.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
    his righteousness shall endure forever;(G)
    his horn[g] shall be exalted in honor.
10 The wicked sees and is angry;
    gnashes his teeth and wastes away;
    the desire of the wicked come to nothing.

Psalm 113[h]

Praise of God’s Care for the Poor

Hallelujah!

I

Praise, you servants of the Lord,
    praise the name of the Lord.(H)
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    both now and forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting(I)
    let the name of the Lord be praised.

II

High above all nations is the Lord;
    above the heavens his glory.(J)
Who is like the Lord our God,
    enthroned on high,
    (K)looking down on heaven and earth?
He raises the needy from the dust,
    lifts the poor from the ash heap,(L)
Seats them with princes,
    the princes of the people,
Gives the childless wife a home,
    the joyful mother of children.(M)
Hallelujah!

Genesis 1:1-2:3

Preamble. The Creation of the World

Chapter 1

The Story of Creation.[a] In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth(A) [b]and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness over the abyss and a mighty wind sweeping over the waters—(B)

Then God said: Let there be light, and there was light.(C) God saw that the light was good. God then separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” Evening came, and morning followed—the first day.[c]

Then God said: Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters, to separate one body of water from the other. God made the dome,[d] and it separated the water below the dome from the water above the dome. And so it happened.(D) God called the dome “sky.” Evening came, and morning followed—the second day.

Then God said: Let the water under the sky be gathered into a single basin, so that the dry land may appear. And so it happened: the water under the sky was gathered into its basin, and the dry land appeared.(E) 10 God called the dry land “earth,” and the basin of water he called “sea.” God saw that it was good. 11 (F)Then God said: Let the earth bring forth vegetation: every kind of plant that bears seed and every kind of fruit tree on earth that bears fruit with its seed in it. And so it happened: 12 the earth brought forth vegetation: every kind of plant that bears seed and every kind of fruit tree that bears fruit with its seed in it. God saw that it was good. 13 Evening came, and morning followed—the third day.

14 Then God said: Let there be lights in the dome of the sky, to separate day from night. Let them mark the seasons, the days and the years,(G) 15 and serve as lights in the dome of the sky, to illuminate the earth. And so it happened: 16 God made the two great lights, the greater one to govern the day, and the lesser one to govern the night, and the stars.(H) 17 God set them in the dome of the sky, to illuminate the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. 19 Evening came, and morning followed—the fourth day.

20 (I)Then God said: Let the water teem with an abundance of living creatures, and on the earth let birds fly beneath the dome of the sky. 21 God created the great sea monsters and all kinds of crawling living creatures with which the water teems, and all kinds of winged birds. God saw that it was good, 22 and God blessed them, saying: Be fertile, multiply, and fill the water of the seas; and let the birds multiply on the earth.(J) 23 Evening came, and morning followed—the fifth day.

24 (K)Then God said: Let the earth bring forth every kind of living creature: tame animals, crawling things, and every kind of wild animal. And so it happened: 25 God made every kind of wild animal, every kind of tame animal, and every kind of thing that crawls on the ground. God saw that it was good. 26 (L)Then God said: Let us make[e] human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth.

27 God created mankind in his image;
    in the image of God he created them;
    male and female[f] he created them.

28 God blessed them and God said to them: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.[g] Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth.(M) 29 [h](N)God also said: See, I give you every seed-bearing plant on all the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food; 30 and to all the wild animals, all the birds of the air, and all the living creatures that crawl on the earth, I give all the green plants for food. And so it happened. 31 God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good. Evening came, and morning followed—the sixth day.(O)

Chapter 2

Thus the heavens and the earth and all their array were completed.(P) [i]On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing; he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken.(Q) God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.(R)

Ephesians 1:3-14

The Father’s Plan of Salvation. [a]Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(A) who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,[b] as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him.(B) In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will,(C) for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved.(D)

Fulfillment Through Christ. In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace(E) that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight,(F) he has made known to us the mystery[c] of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him(G) 10 as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.(H)

Inheritance Through the Spirit. 11 In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,(I) 12 so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped[d] in Christ. 13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed[e] with the promised holy Spirit,(J) 14 which is the first installment[f] of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.(K)

II. Unity of the Church in Christ

The Church as Christ’s Body.[g]

John 1:29-34

John the Baptist’s Testimony to Jesus. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God,[a] who takes away the sin of the world.(A) 30 [b]He is the one of whom I said,(B) ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ 31 I did not know him,[c] but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” 32 John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove[d] from the sky and remain upon him. 33 I did not know him,(C) but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit.’(D) 34 [e](E)Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”
