Book of Common Prayer
Psalm 2
Coronation of the Son
1 Why(A) do the nations rage(B)
and the peoples plot in vain?(C)
2 The kings of the earth take their stand,(D)
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and his Anointed One:[a](E)
3 “Let’s tear off their chains
and throw their ropes off of us.”(F)
4 The one enthroned[b] in heaven laughs;
the Lord ridicules them.(G)
5 Then he speaks to them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath:(H)
6 “I have installed my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”(I)
7 I will declare the Lord’s decree.
He said to me, “You are my Son;[c]
today I have become your Father.(J)
8 Ask of me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance
and the ends of the earth your possession.(K)
9 You will break them with an iron scepter;
you will shatter them like pottery.”(L)
10 So now, kings, be wise;
receive instruction, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with reverential awe
and rejoice with trembling.(M)
12 Pay homage to[d] the Son or he will be angry
and you will perish in your rebellion,[e](N)
for his anger may ignite at any moment.(O)
All who take refuge in him are happy.(P)
Psalm 85
Restoration of Favor
For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.
1 Lord, you showed favor to your land;(A)
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.[a](B)
2 You forgave your people’s guilt;
you covered all their sin.(C)Selah
3 You withdrew all your fury;
you turned from your burning anger.(D)
4 Return to us, God of our salvation,
and abandon your displeasure with us.(E)
5 Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger for all generations?(F)
6 Will you not revive us again
so that your people may rejoice in you?(G)
7 Show us your faithful love, Lord,
and give us your salvation.(H)
8 I will listen to what God will say;
surely the Lord will declare peace
to his people, his faithful ones,
and not let them go back to foolish ways.(I)
9 His salvation is very near those who fear him,
so that glory may dwell in our land.(J)
10 Faithful love and truth will join together;
righteousness and peace will embrace.(K)
11 Truth will spring up from the earth,
and righteousness will look down from heaven.(L)
12 Also, the Lord will provide what is good,
and our land will yield its crops.(M)
13 Righteousness will go before him
to prepare the way for his steps.(N)
Psalm 110
The Priestly King
A psalm of David.
1 This is the declaration of the Lord
to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”(A)
2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion.
Rule[a] over your surrounding[b] enemies.(B)
3 Your people will volunteer
on your day of battle.[c](C)
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
the dew of your youth belongs to you.[d](D)
4 The Lord has sworn an oath and will not take it back:
“You are a priest forever
according to the pattern of Melchizedek.”(E)
Psalm 132
David and Zion Chosen
A song of ascents.
1 Lord, remember David
and all the hardships he endured,(A)
2 and how he swore an oath to the Lord,
making a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(B)
3 “I will not enter my house
or get into my bed,
4 I will not allow my eyes to sleep
or my eyelids to slumber(C)
5 until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”(D)
6 We heard of the ark in Ephrathah;[a](E)
we found it in the fields of Jaar.[b](F)
7 Let’s go to his dwelling place;
let’s worship at his footstool.(G)
8 Rise up, Lord, come to your resting place,
you and your powerful ark.(H)
9 May your priests be clothed with righteousness,
and may your faithful people shout for joy.(I)
10 For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.[c](J)
11 The Lord swore an oath to David,
a promise he will not abandon:
“I will set one of your offspring[d]
on your throne.(K)
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and my decrees that I will teach them,
their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”(L)
13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his home:(M)
14 “This is my resting place forever;
I will make my home here
because I have desired it.(N)
15 I will abundantly bless its food;
I will satisfy its needy with bread.(O)
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation,
and its faithful people will shout for joy.(P)
17 There I will make a horn grow for David;(Q)
I have prepared a lamp[e] for my anointed one.(R)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(S)
but the crown he wears[f] will be glorious.”(T)
The Lord’s Rule from Restored Zion
4 In the last days(A)
the mountain of the Lord’s house(B)
will be established
at the top of the mountains
and will be raised above the hills.
Peoples will stream to it,(C)
2 and many nations will come and say,(D)
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the Lord,(E)
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us about his ways(F)
so we may walk in his paths.”
For instruction will go out of Zion(G)
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
3 He will settle disputes among many peoples(H)
and provide arbitration for strong nations
that are far away.
They will beat their swords into plows
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nation will not take up the sword against nation,
and they will never again train for war.
4 But each person will sit under his grapevine(I)
and under his fig tree
with no one to frighten him.(J)
For the mouth of the Lord(K) of Armies
has spoken.
5 Though all the peoples walk
in the name of their own gods,(L)
we will walk(M) in the name of the Lord our God
forever and ever.(N)
2 Bethlehem Ephrathah,(A)
you are small among the clans of Judah;
one will come from you(B)
to be ruler over Israel for me.(C)
His origin[a] is from antiquity,(D)
from ancient times.
3 Therefore, Israel will be abandoned(E) until the time
when she who is in labor(F) has given birth;
then the rest of the ruler’s brothers(G) will return
to the people of Israel.(H)
4 He will stand and shepherd them(I)
in the strength of the Lord,
in the majestic name of the Lord his God.
They will live securely,
for then his greatness will extend
to the ends of the earth.(J)
Knowing God through Love
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God(A) and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 God’s love was revealed among us[a] in this way: God sent(B) his one and only Son(C) into the world so that we might live(D) through him. 10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us(E) and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice[b](F) for our sins. 11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another.(G) 12 No one has ever seen God.(H) If we love one another, God remains in[c] us and his love is made complete in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in him(I) and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.(J) 14 And we have seen and we testify that the Father has sent his Son(K) as the world’s Savior. 15 Whoever confesses(L) that Jesus is the Son of God—God remains in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.
God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
The One from Heaven
31 The one who comes from above(A) is above all. The one who is from the earth is earthly and speaks in earthly terms.[a] The one who comes from heaven is above all.(B) 32 He testifies(C) to what he has seen and heard, and yet no one accepts his testimony. 33 The one who has accepted his testimony has affirmed that God is true.(D) 34 For the one whom God sent speaks God’s words, since he[b] gives the Spirit(E) without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son(F) and has given all things into his hands.(G) 36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son[c] will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.(H)
