Psalm 45[a]

Song for a Royal Wedding

For the leader; according to “Lilies.” A maskil of the Korahites. A love song.

I

My heart is stirred by a noble theme,
    as I sing my ode to the king.
    My tongue is the pen of a nimble scribe.

II

You are the most handsome of men;
    fair speech has graced your lips,
    for God has blessed you forever.(A)
Gird your sword upon your hip, mighty warrior!
    In splendor and majesty ride on triumphant!(B)
In the cause of truth, meekness, and justice
    may your right hand show your wondrous deeds.
Your arrows are sharp;
    peoples will cower at your feet;
    the king’s enemies will lose heart.
Your throne, O God,[b] stands forever;(C)
    your royal scepter is a scepter for justice.
You love justice and hate wrongdoing;
    therefore God, your God, has anointed you
    with the oil of gladness above your fellow kings.
With myrrh, aloes, and cassia
    your robes are fragrant.
From ivory-paneled palaces[c]
    stringed instruments bring you joy.
10 Daughters of kings are your lovely wives;
    a princess arrayed in Ophir’s gold[d]
    comes to stand at your right hand.

III

11 Listen, my daughter, and understand;
    pay me careful heed.
Forget your people and your father’s house,[e]
12     that the king might desire your beauty.
He is your lord;
13     (D)honor him, daughter of Tyre.
Then the richest of the people
    will seek your favor with gifts.
14 All glorious is the king’s daughter as she enters,(E)
    her raiment threaded with gold;
15 In embroidered apparel she is led to the king.
    The maids of her train are presented to the king.
16 They are led in with glad and joyous acclaim;
    they enter the palace of the king.

IV

17 The throne of your fathers your sons will have;
    you shall make them princes through all the land.(F)
18 I will make your name renowned through all generations;
    thus nations shall praise you forever.(G)

Psalm 47-48

Psalm 47[a]

The Ruler of All the Nations

For the leader. A psalm of the Korahites.

I

All you peoples, clap your hands;
    shout to God with joyful cries.(A)
For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared,
    the great king over all the earth,(B)
Who made people subject to us,
    nations under our feet,(C)
[b]Who chose our heritage for us,
    the glory of Jacob, whom he loves.(D)
Selah

II

[c]God has gone up with a shout;
    the Lord, amid trumpet blasts.(E)
Sing praise to God, sing praise;
    sing praise to our king, sing praise.

III

For God is king over all the earth;(F)
    sing hymns of praise.
God rules over the nations;
    God sits upon his holy throne.
10 The princes of the peoples assemble
    with the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God,
    highly exalted.(G)

Psalm 48[d]

The Splendor of the Invincible City

A psalm of the Korahites.[e] A song.

I

Great is the Lord and highly praised
    in the city of our God:(H)
His holy mountain,
    fairest of heights,
    the joy of all the earth,(I)
    Mount Zion, the heights of Zaphon,[f](J)
    the city of the great king.

II

God is in its citadel,
    renowned as a stronghold.
See! The kings assembled,
    together they advanced.
[g]When they looked they were astounded;
    terrified, they were put to flight!(K)
Trembling seized them there,
    anguish, like a woman’s labor,(L)
As when the east wind wrecks
    the ships of Tarshish![h]

III

[i]What we had heard we have now seen
    in the city of the Lord of hosts,
In the city of our God,
    which God establishes forever.
Selah
10 We ponder, O God, your mercy
    within your temple
11 Like your name, O God,
    so is your praise to the ends of the earth.(M)
Your right hand is fully victorious.
12     Mount Zion is glad!
The daughters of Judah rejoice
    because of your judgments!(N)

IV

13 Go about Zion, walk all around it,
    note the number of its towers.
14 Consider the ramparts, examine its citadels,
    that you may tell future generations:(O)
15 That this is God,
    our God for ever and ever.[j]
    He will lead us until death.

Zechariah 2

Chapter 2

Second Vision: The Four Horns and the Four Smiths. I raised my eyes and looked and there were four horns.[a] Then I asked the angel who spoke with me, “What are those?” He answered, “Those are the horns that scattered[b] Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”(A)

Then the Lord showed me four workmen.[c] And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And the Lord said, “Those are the horns that scattered Judah, so that none could raise their heads any more;(B) and these have come to terrify them—to cut down the horns of the nations that raised their horns to scatter the land of Judah.”

Third Vision: The Man with the Measuring Cord. I raised my eyes and looked, and there was a man with a measuring cord[d] in his hand.(C) I asked, “Where are you going?” And he said, “To measure Jerusalem—to see how great its width is and how great its length.”

Then the angel who spoke with me advanced as another angel came out to meet him and he said to the latter, “Run, speak to that official:[e] Jerusalem will be unwalled, because of the abundance of people and beasts in its midst.(D) I will be an encircling wall of fire[f] for it—oracle of the Lord—and I will be the glory in its midst.”(E)

Expansion on the Themes of the First Three Visions. 10 Up! Up! Flee from the land of the north[g]—oracle of the Lord;—For like the four winds of heaven I have dispersed you—oracle of the Lord.(F) 11 Up, Zion! Escape, you who dwell in daughter Babylon! 12 For thus says the Lord of hosts after the Lord’s glory had sent me, concerning the nations that have plundered you: Whoever strikes you strikes me directly in the eye.(G) 13 Now I wave my hand over them, and they become plunder for their own servants.(H) Thus you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me. 14 Sing and rejoice, daughter Zion! Now, I am coming to dwell in your midst—oracle of the Lord. 15 Many nations will bind themselves to the Lord on that day.(I) They will be my people,[h] and I will dwell in your midst. Then you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. 16 The Lord will inherit Judah(J) as his portion of the holy land,[i] and the Lord will again choose Jerusalem. 17 Silence, all people, in the presence of the Lord, who stirs forth from his holy dwelling.(K)

Revelation 3:14-22

14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea,[a] write this:

“‘The Amen, the faithful and true witness, the source of God’s creation, says this:(A) 15 “I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot.[b] I wish you were either cold or hot. 16 [c]So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 [d](B)For you say, ‘I am rich and affluent and have no need of anything,’ and yet do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire[e] so that you may be rich, and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you may see. 19 Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.(C)

20 “‘“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.[f] 21 I will give the victor the right to sit with me on my throne, as I myself first won the victory and sit with my Father on his throne.(D)

22 “‘“Whoever has ears ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”’”

Matthew 24:32-44

32 “Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, know that he is near, at the gates. 34 Amen, I say to you, this generation[a] will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 35 (A)Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

The Unknown Day and Hour.[b] 36 (B)“But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son,[c] but the Father alone. 37 [d](C)For as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 In [those] days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. 39 They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be [also] at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 [e](D)Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. 42 [f](E)Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. 43 (F)Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. 44 So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
